Jake Middleton takes his oath of office as the new Natchez mayor with his wife Mitzi Ferguson Tuesday afternoon.
Middleton, aldermen begin new term
Published Wednesday, July 2, 2008
NATCHEZ — On Tuesday morning Natchez’s newest leadership team was sworn in and made ready for duty.
Addressing his constituents for the fist time as mayor Jake Middleton spoke of a bright future for Natchez.
“We’re going to move this city forward,” he said.
Middleton said he and the board have committed themselves to working together for the betterment of Natchez.
“We are going to make sure that projects get completed,” he said of ongoing work in the city and plans on the horizon.
And the work Middleton spoke about goes beyond what the aldermen will do as an independent body.
Middleton said he has already spoken to President of the Adams County Board of Supervisors Henry Watts about ways to consolidate city and county services.
Middleton said he and Watts have already discussed ideas on consolidation of law enforcement and recreation.
Aside from ventures with the county Middleton expressed an extremely positive outlook on the city’s future.
“We’re going to do our best to make sure Natchez prospers,” he said.
And former mayor Phillip West said the new board is in a unique position to help the city.
Of the board’s three newest members, Dan Dillard Tony Fields and Mark Fortenberry, none have any previous political experience.
West said the city’s newest leaders essentially have no bad habits to bring into office.
“They should be able to do good things,” he said.
Fields agreed with West.
“I don’t have any baggage to bring,” he said. “We’re coming in here fresh and we want to do what’s best for the city.”
The first meeting of the new Natchez Board of Aldermen will be July 8.

Lets all move forward together for a better community. I feel the community has done a very good job in selecting the right ones for the job.

A new day is coming, or has arrived in Natchez. Lets take a look and see the sun rise, and watch new beginnings. The best to the new administration.

I'd like to see Natchez get back to basics. Get back to the great city she once was. Good luck Jake and alderman. I'm behind you 100%.

Did I mention I love politicians. I hope Jake and Henry can work to bring the separatist governments together. I'm paying about all the taxes I can afford since I stay in the city limits.
I once knew a lot of people in state government and was planning to run for state senator since my buddy Jay Disharoon was in the senate. My father explained that he
@%$*^@ about %@$#%@@ me if I did and he would %$@&$%@ beat my @$$ to where I would never &$%@#%$ sit down again.
He didn't love politicians like I do.

I am looking forward to Natchez moving in a positive direction! It's been a long time coming.
Hope this administration doesn't get caught up in the "big green-eyed machine" like so many others have. A public servant is just that... a public servant. It is not suppose to be an opportunity to fill your own pockets. We are way too easy on our leaders when we let them get away with stealing our money, or using their offices to gain personally.
For example, taking home city or county cars? Please!! This town isn't so big that public servants can't drive in their own autos up to their office building and pick up their work auto -- IF a call comes in over the weekend, or at night! Allowing them to take work vehicles home is just an additional expense for which the taxpayers of Adams County and Natchez foot the bill.
Hope the new administration looks at all of the similar waste and tightens the purse strings, redirects these expenses to needed areas, like the streets!

It is a very easy process to combine the NPD and the ACSO, of course it would have to be processed after the the combination of the Governments 0f Adams County and the City of Natchez!
