Judge orders Zach Scruggs to prison Aug. 15

Published Friday, July 4, 2008

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A judge has ordered Zach Scruggs, the son of lawyer Richard "Dickie" Scruggs, to report to federal prison on Aug. 15 to serve a two-year sentence.

The younger Scruggs had hoped that U.S. District Judge Neal Biggers Jr. would delay his reporting date so he could be home for the birth of he and his wife's third child.

On Thursday, Biggers ordered Zach Scruggs to report on Aug. 15.

Zach Scruggs, who was sentenced Wednesday, pleaded guilty to failing to report a crime. Dickie Scruggs and law partner Sidney Backstrom pleaded guilty to attempting to bribe a state judge involving a lawsuit over attorneys fees.

Dickie Scruggs was sentenced last week to five years in prison. Backstrom was sentenced to 28 months.
