Partnership for pantry deserves praise

Published Thursday, July 10, 2008

With a little bit of help and some amazing friends, the Natchez Food Pantry has new life.

Weeks after facing its demise when the United Way of the Miss-Lou announced it was no longer able to keep the facility’s doors open, two key community leaders have stepped up and offered to help.

First, Catholic Charities raised its hand and is working to take over the ownership and day-to-day operations of the county’s food bank for needy residents.

All that remains before Catholic Charities becomes official is the signature of the bishop.

But what remained was the need for some initial operating funds.

No fear.

In steps the good-hearted folks at the Isle of Capri Casino in Natchez who have donated $10,000 to the food bank.

Their gracious gift is magnified in our minds by the fact that this comes on the heels of a pretty rough financial period for the Isle. Their financial statement was soaked with the effects of the casino’s forced closure in May when the rising Mississippi River reached near-record levels.

While the flood washed away expected profits, the generosity of the staff remained.

Through both Catholic Charities and the Isle of Capri, some 900 families serviced by the food bank will continue to enjoy much-needed nourishment until they can provide for themselves, if they’re capable.

Thanks to Catholic Charities and to the Isle for continuing to look out for the community, especially those less fortunate.

This is some wonderful news for the people that are on fixed incomes. With the rising prices of gas, electricity and groceries this program is very much needed in this area. Thank-you both Catholic Charities and Isle of Capri for opening your hearts and souls to help the people in need.

one is in charge of eternal souls going to heaven, while the other helps to lead souls to hell.....Kinda like jesus and satan trying to work together to feed the masses.

Yea, thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies......
