Franklin County adds two assistant coaches to staff
Published Friday, July 11, 2008
MEADVILLE - Franklin County head football coach Trent Hammond has added two new assistants to his staff, former North Pike head coach Adam Barron and former McComb assistant and Franklin County coaching legend Michael Goff.
The two new hires complete a newly remodeled Franklin High coaching staff, that includes assistants Tony Gibbs, Brent Calcote, and Rickey O’Quinn Jr. The Bulldogs went 12-3 last year, reaching the 3A State Finals, a year after winning the 3A championship in 2006. Hammond, replaced former Franklin County coach Grady McCluskey, who left for an assistant coaching job in Columbus in January.
“I’m real excited about working with my new staff,” said Hammond, who conducted Spring Drills in April and May with the Bulldogs. “With coaches Goff and Barron you get two highly respected coaches with a lot of experience, that also are former head coaches. It blends well with our staff.”
Barron served as head coach at North Pike for seven season, from 2000-2006. He will oversee the defense at Franklin County with help from Goff and Gibbs.
“I’m glad to be here,” said Barron. “We’ve got a real good staff here, and I’ve known Trent for a while. Plus I’ve always wanted to coach with Goff.”
Goff, who served as head coach of the Bulldogs for 24 seasons (1977-2001), comes back to Franklin High after serving the last two seasons as an assistant on the McComb High football staff.
“I’m tickled to death to be coming home,” said Goff. “I’m looking forward to working with everyone on our great staff and with the players to. We’ve got a hard working group of kids here, something Franklin County always prides in having.”
The new staff is already hard at work in preperation for the new season. The Bulldogs kick off the 2008 season Aug, 29 against Hazlehurst in Louie Mullins Memorial Stadium.

They should have gotten Purvis and Daves back. Both are coaching geniuses.

Coach Goff is a good christian man and a coaching legend, but I still think Coach Gibbs should be over the defense. Goff should have stayed in retirement. I played under Coach Goff and he has served well. Some things in FC have changed but there is one thing that hasn't changed---that is the good ole buddy system!

FT could you explain what you mean by the "good ole buddy system?"

This has the makings of a great football staff. FC has really stepped up - NO GOOD OLE BOY SYSTEM- just hiring good people.

This is the making of a DISASTER! I thought Mike Goff died! Well, his brain was dead when he coached us.
Look, certainly there are favors going on at Franklin. And, for those who pretend to not know what is happening, you've been on the receiving end of those kind of favors.
Johnny Monroe, Mike Goff, go away! Your era has long passed. For you, it's time for rocking chairs and pepsodent. These kids need people who are looking out for their best interest, not grandpas trying to relive the good 'ol days.
Franklin County has bred the one person who has not only changed the football program, but has uplifted that county to National status. Kids are coming out of the program that Tony Gibbs has implimented and are on their way to the next level...prepared.
I've been in SE Asia and have held conversations with people who have heard or read about Franklin County and a few of their players. I've been in Canada and have talked with people from Pensylvania who knew of DJ Shaw and the Tillman kids.
This isn't about you old farts--give Tony the position that he is molded for. Tony is not an outsider, he was born and raised in Bude. Many of the kids who play on his team walk past his house daily.
Give Tony Gibbs the Head Coach job! In fact, Franklin County should name one day out of the year "Tony Gibbs Day", because of the significant contributions he has made to that entire community.
Franklin needs to send the oldtimers to rest homes, send the outsiders packing and realize they have all the winning ingredients right there at home!
Take them back to State, Tony!
