Don’t vote for me; just give me the cash

Published Sunday, June 8, 2008

That’s it. I’m officially throwing my hat in the 2012 political ring.

It’s me and you, Jake Middleton, (assuming you opt to run again in four years).

Sure, I know, it’s a conflict of interest, having me run for mayor while leading the newspaper, too. It’s OK; we’ll work out the details of how to avoid conflicts later.

Before you ask, I have not suddenly felt a higher calling to move into public service.

Nor have I lost my mind and decided to jump into politics with eyes eventually on the White House, though some of the presidential perks are obviously more appealing than those of the mayor’s office.

I have no burning desire to provide vision to the city or work hard to bring jobs here. That sounds too much like work to me.

My sole motivation for running is simple: Cash.

After thumbing through the most recent campaign finance reports from the city races that ended last week, I starting thinking about running. But on Saturday when I read that candidates could keep unused campaign contributions, I became convinced there’s money to be made just by running.

And the longer you run, as Hillary and Obama have shown, the more buzz you can generate. And buzz equals cash.

Since I’ve officially declared, I’m just waiting for the donations to start rolling into the bank.

My plan is simple.

I’ll tell you whatever you want to hear so long as you contribute to the Committee to Elect Kevin Cooper for Natchez Mayor, 2012.

Are you a fan of annexation? Fantastic. So am I. We must annex or the city will continue to dwindle.

Oh, you think annexing county residents is bad? Me too. Who on earth would think of such a thing? Yes, cash is fine.

What Natchez needs most is a recreation complex, something state-of-the-art that will bring in economic development as we host tournaments. Yes, two “Os” in “Cooper.”

I agree with you. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with our recreation facilities. If those ballparks were good enough for us, then they’re good enough for today’s children. Yes, my Web site allows credit card payments 24-7.

I figure if I start now, campaigning and pushing for funds, my “war chest” will be amazingly full by the time Middleton even starts thinking about his re-election in 2012.

One thing I should note. And I’ll tell you this if you can keep a secret: I have no intention of actually being elected.

I’m just in this for the dough.

A few weeks before the first primary my plan is simple: Bow out gracefully and explain to my throngs of suckers, I mean, supporters that I’ve simply had a change of heart.

It’ll be a well-orchestrated endeavor. Tears (of joy) will flow as I tell the check writers that it’s been a long, hard-fought battle, but it’s time to give up.

Suddenly, I’ll invite Mayor Middleton onto the stage, and firmly grasp his hand in an exaggerated shake. Then, as the cameras click, I’ll pull him into a hug and break down as I throw my support to him.

I can’t win, have no desire to do so, but having some extra cash would be great.

Besides, the campaign slogan “Kevin ’12” doesn’t have nearly the ring that “Jake ’08” had. But that doesn’t mean the cash register can’t ring a bit in the meantime.

This has got to be one of the best you have come up with yet Kevin. I laughed all the way through it.

Hmmm I wonder how many more names will be on the ballot now?

Kevin...great article...now give me the credit for the idea...look at the first online comment under your headline "No rules for left over campaign money"...how are we gonna divy up this public largesse...LOL.

In all fairness, it should be pointed out that Chick has already announced his overage will go to charity...what about the other guys?...I'm pretty sure that Jake will stow his away for another run in four years, but what about Philip and the others?

Thanks for the smiles your article brought to me, Kevin. I sure needed to have my mood upped. And yes, I wonder what West and the others will do with their 'left-over' campaign contributions? Sure would be thoughtful for them to contribute their remaining balance to go towards the building fund for the future Humane Society shelter.

If you keep reporting on the waste ,nonethical behavior, and keep a light on our elected officials, I will donate to you. No need to run for office. I like when the Democrat shines a light. It makes the roaches and rats run for the cracks, just like in real life.

Great artical Kevin.....Surely made me laugh....

I also wonder where the left over money will go.......Chick says he will donate his to charity wonder why anonymous though......Bucket he will keep his no doubt at all...hitormiss what is bucket going to do with his money?

Haha! Your artical made my day. If you actually did run, you would have my vote. Just for your sheer honesty! At least we know what we're getting into with you, eh? ;) Oh and, share some of those perks!

Sam-You know those DemocRATS. They are going to spend the "extra" money.

Posted by chick26gt (anonymous) on June 8, 2008 at 12:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

FYI, folks,
I have been giving anonymously for years to many charities, both national and local. To whom I choose to give is known only to me, my CPA, and my God. I prefer it that way because I am personally uncomfortable "tooting my own horn" announcing to whom I give and when. That's just me. You are free to second guess all you want---have at it if it gives you a kick.
Also, Kevin would do well to publish reports on how our tax dollars are spent, rather than focusing on donations to campaigns of candidates because people believed in their person and what that person stood for. A closer examination of "who gave what to whom, and for what reasons" might be in order.
Additionally, what follows the election may be much more interesting than what was "promised" during the process (and add to that , what DOES NOT occur after the new folks take office--a sip of water perhaps?). Keep your eyes open Natchez, and you too Kevin.

Posted by justmeinchez (anonymous) on June 8, 2008 at 1:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Kevin, be sure you get a Natchez address, as many of our mayors who live outside the city limits have had to do.

Living in Jackson and on the lake does not a Natchezian make. I imagine Jake will be spending his time in Jackson with his pediatrician doctor wife or at his house on the lake in Louisiana.
Full time mayor he will be unable to be, unless he is not a full time husband and/or business owner.
Didn't he crawfish on his promise to give free water on Rosco's radio show less than 12 hours after the election results were in? All at once, the board of aldermen would make that decision.
In other words, he flat lied in his campaign material. Kevin, you are so right...Jake promised anything to get elected and look who he is indebted to by his report.
Not a lot of Natchez expenditures---mainly Jackson and surrounding area. His main donations are from Jackson, New Orleans (hotel and convention center) and condo on the bluff ( Worley, again Louisiana) Will be interesting to see if and how you follow-up since you and the Democrat endorsed him.

If you read the pages inside the paper about campaign contributions, you may notice as I did that most of Chicks donations came from individuals, Jakes came from businesses. Wonder why?

I don't tend to make comments much on this b/c quite frankly I laugh at the folks that do. I am wondering when all of you sour grapes are gonna get over the fact that Jake is our mayor. He was BY FAR the best person for the job and you would have to be a FOOL to think otherwise. If you all would worry as much about yourselves as you do everyone else, this world would be a much better place. And Chick, everyones eyes are open.... how about you open yours to the results of last weeks election and LET IT GO!

Grumble, grumble. If people aren't complaining about the celebrities then we will be complaining about the complainers.

What I wonder if people are so consistently against bigger government and higher taxes then why do so many of the folks that say that choose careers in government?

Kevin, I am surprised that Julie is allowing you to violate Demcrat policy by announcing your candidacy before you have actually qualified. Guess that new job bought her sllence on this one, huh?

But I'm not complaining. I want to be your running mate. I'll handle the reigns of power and you can just print my news releases and we will split the left over campaign cash. I'm going to put mine in Rentech, wait till it gets below a dime again and take a short position on it. You can do what you want with yours.

I think we can do a great job of running the twin cities. Any paradoxes in our campaign, at least my part of it, will be real and not apparent. We should run a long campaign as you suggest and let people know from the start that political favors will be awarded in direct proportion to campaign donations.

It was touch and go OldGrandDad. It's nice to have your support in my recovery period. The endorphins are flowing again and I feel so good I decided not to write that fiery piece about Dr. Morris and his creation of fodder for the global workforce, which in local terms means educating prisoners, prison guards, servants for the tourism industry, and field hands for the antebellum home landscapes. He is a real modern day William Johnson.

Hey, I'm still for singing chain-gangs working around town. There HAS to be an entertainment element in order to hold the interest of modern society. Simple history will not do. Field hands at work??? Ok, but lets send them to singing classes with the chain-gang guys. To be succesful, we don't want real history; we want the stuff the old movies were made of.

A belle on a bridge small and wooden;
Demure, petite, fingertips to cheek
Her pose reflected in the still pond beneath.
Bridal white against crimson blush of cheeks
Furrowed brow set against the coming duties
To be suffered 'twixt dusk and dawn.
Would she love him for it, or hate him,
Her beau lately so dear and so well approved?

Heart lightens, worries of the morrow flee afar-
From the fields and kitchens come the sounds
Of happy servants singing Negro spirituals:
Cadence marked by hoein', choppin', pickin',
Cookin, cleanin'.
Those happy singers lift voices in soft swell-
:Go down Moses, way down in Egypt Land!
Tell old Pharoah, let my People Go!"

Her dainty eye tears as she turns on silk slippers
To face the old Auntie she just hours ago so petulantly
Stomped her foot at.
Tomorrow she'd be a woman, insolent child no more.

"What you cryin' bout now missy? Today aint perfect enough yet?", Auntie scolds her.

EnKiKur, you can be our tourism scriptwriter. Throw in a Mandingo element and we'll have 'em flocking to town. Let's not forget to dress the home receivers in outrageously low-cut dresses (like North and the South). They'll come a runnin'.

Yes, but I want to run the whole show OldGrandDad. I want to get some Mexicans and some Chinese in to do the Pageant and the Maypole and all. I think I can cut costs and show how Natchez is embracing the global paradigm at the same time. Why should our chldren sweat in those costumes when there are so many who would welcome a chance to do it for less?

I want a contract with the Peking Opera, and I want to send the whole ensemble touring during the off season in Natchez to raise additional revenue for the town.

If Kevin and I get elected, there are going to be some big changes around here. I might even outsource voting to India since it is all done electronically now anyway. Heck, hope and change, that's what Kevin and I represent.

Be sure to donate lots, and encourage your friends too as well.

Posted by OldGrandDad (anonymous) on June 9, 2008 at 9:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

EnKiKur, are you propsing a binary-mayorship? Does that mean I have to donate double? And will you accept euros, pounds and dirhams?

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on June 9, 2008 at 9:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We would prefer euros and specie OldGrandDad, we don't like discounted paper much.

I am proposing Kevin be the propaganda arm of the new mayoral regime and I will be the frontman.

One thing I want to do right away is tax all money, in whatever form of cash, electronic entry, or negotiable paper leaving the city limits of Natchez. I'm thinking something along the lines of 40 percent, which is what the Vietnamese Government was charging on imports of the same during the eighties. 40 percent sounds fair to me.

Yes, Sam, I'm afraid so. Under the new regime, which has never been tried before, those privileged like you with much more than others have will be expected to provide a greater share of what is needed for the common good. From he who has more, more is expected.

You can fault your parents for being attentive in your upbringing and industrious in their approach to life if you fear the new tax system. Or you can forego your greedy ways and come to work in one of our new public service positions and we will take care of you. Truthfully, the new regime takes a dim view of those middle of the roaders like you who are neither very wealthy or impoverished and we intend to take steps to re-educate you so you join one of the more mainstream groups of impoverished or wealthy.

Kevin; Why are you all of a sudden focusing on left-over campain contributions? This has been happening since the beginning of time! Why wasn't anything said about it after the last race, or the one before it, etc., etc.? Are you merely trying to sling a bit of mud?

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on June 10, 2008 at 8:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I am rewriting some of the Republican noneya. When I get my thoughts right it will open back up again. We are also waiting on the HNF to turn loose of the funds to remodel the old Wagner Store out at Church Hill, that is our publishing house and the roof is falling in. It doesn't hurt the quality of our news, but it puts a damper on our drinking parties when it rains.

OldGrandDad, about that Mandingo element. You might be shocked to hear that I actually saw an insidiously inflammatory short novel about the inner workings of the blue haired elite that contained many such elements. The piece was so shocking I vigorously opposed distribution of the diatribe by the unnamed author and so far have been able to prevail on what remains of his sensitivity.

It was full of things like black Electra 225's breaking traffic laws, secret coven meetings in old plantation homes with gluttonous servings of biscuits and gravy, and things that cannot be mentioned in a family newspaper like the Democrat. I hope you join me in condemning the author of this heretical attack on established order.

Posted by OldGrandDad (anonymous) on June 10, 2008 at 8:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

EnKiKur, I'll help you condemn since its a novel. If he compiles simple historical fact I'll be all for it. Reading historical "dirt" is great fun.

The roof's falling in on the old store??? I guess I haven't been out there in a long time. Are there fresh road signs for me to shoot?

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on June 10, 2008 at 9:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yes, the roof is falling in and the Historic Natchez Foundation has 160,000 dollars, half in donation and half in grants from what I understand, that they are holding onto and won't spend. There is a time limit on the grant money so they need to get busy and spend the money.

As a member of the board of aldermen of ChurchHIll, I have to ask you to please not shoot the signs. The Jefferson County Gully Authority has some equipment parked down in some of the gullies and it is all insured, so feel free to practice your marksmanship on it. Watch for ricochets.

Speaking of campaign donations...wasn't it announced that Obama still has about $42 million in campaign donations to play with just prior to Hillary announcing the suspension of her campaign...which is now in debt? Well, it seems that the day that she announced that, Obama's campaign was a few hours later out in telephonic force. I splained to them how the republicans had broken my bank account and that I'd have to wait til the democrats had replentished it again before I'd be coming thru for em.

Shoot, he has $42 million and I'm in debt...I should have asked him to help a gurl out.

Or, perhaps, I too could run...lol.

most politicians lie about the statements and show they have no money left over charles woods showed he was the only one that gave himself money . now thats stupid if no one gives you any money to run , how do yu expect to get elected. you have to have people that want you to get in a election and they give you money to help. if you have to fund a election yourself, you are gona loose. you have to have the publics support to win and if you are lucky to have anything left, you use it for the next election some national or state politicians leave with millions (look at the past governors and the attorney general in mississippi)

Brothers of The Revolution Remembered
In the hearts of too young Soldiers
Do I live,
I am
Chasity;

Welcome Brothers of the Revolution
Dying on the Field.
Justice sends me here, and her sister Liberty;
There is a Reward for Brav’ry
And Thee might have it here;
Thee might have thy Fill
Of
~ me~
Chasity.

In the Church Upon the Hill
Do I live,
I am
Eternity;

Welcome Brothers of the Revolution
Dead Upon the Field.
Of Sweet Chasity
Thee hast had thy Fill.

Justice sends Me here, and her Sister Liberty,
There is a Reward for Brav’ry
And Thee might have it here;
Thee might have thy Fill
Of
~me~
Eternity.

In the Gracious Heart of God
Do I live,
I am
Mercy;

Welcome Brothers of the Revolution
Now dust within the field,
Of Sweet Chasity Thee hast had Thy fill.

With Sweet Eternity
All Thee are lying still;

Justice sends me here, and my sister Liberty;
There is a reward for brav’ry
And Thee might have it here,
Thee might lie at last
With
~me~
Sweet Mercy

The Republican is named after the town Peace. That is why the reference to the church on the hill.

ChurchHill occupies such a place of significance in the world it needs its own newspaper. Global events often hinge on what transpires not only in ChurchHIll but the immediate surrounding area. When God said "Let there be land" Jefferson County appeared first and all the rest of the land spread out from there.

Jefferson County is one of the great bastions of freedom in this country. The people there love the land because they still know they are land that walks; the land lives in and speaks through them.

Why the Republican when I have the Democrat? It is a simple matter of balance. The Republican has a different political philosophy than the Democrat. The Democrat allows a little more free speech though- Charlie Evans is the owner and publisher of the Republican and his editorial policy is pretty strict. That's why there was no comment section on the Republican. It's not that he wants to restrict free speech, he just prefers to give more time to that speech that freely expresses his point of view.

And just where is this Church Hill that you're speaking of EnkiKur? I must have blinked and missed that Utopia somewhere along the way. I'm jkng. Actually, I have a couple of good friends out that way. Well, I guess that's Church Hill. Church Hill is the town with the church on the hill with steps, right, that you get to by way of the Trace? I always admired that church from the road. I actually wanted to get married there, once. I've been out there a few times. Do you really live out there? Yall have internet out there or do you have to come into town to get online? What about cable, do you have cable internet out in Church Hill? But, you know what...I didn't notice any stores out there. Where do yall buy groceries? I noticed that there is an ad in the democrat offering 89 acres in Jefferson County, do you know anything about that land? It's a wonder that the owner would let that go, if all Jeffersonians think the same as you...lol.

What Church Hill needs is it's own post office. I see no reason why yall couldn't have your own newspaper. That's a great idea.

I'll have to google Charlie Evans and see what I can find on him.

Yes, that is the right ChurchHill Peace. And there is a store, it doesn't sell anything anymore but the post office is inside along with the Republican publishing offices and also our town hall.

Yes, I live there. My spiritual home is actually a few miles down the road, Mayor Clem Ike's place, which now is the home of the January Hermitage of the Sisters of Cannsonsburg Presbyterians for Progress, a group of Presbyterian nuns. They are setting up an ethanol refinery at the Hermitage as part of a local Economic Development Program. They intend to market their ethanol through independent distributors- just go out there with a one, five, or ten gallon jug and you can go into business with them as a distribution partner.

I don't know anything about that land that is for sale, though I expect it will go for a premium price being in Jefferson County.

We don't have cable, we use satellite and wireless and find that works just fine and in case of terrorist attack we can't be cut off like when those terrorists pulled the telephone cable out of the river down there at Natchez.

We grow most of what we eat, but for those extras there is always plenty of good food available at Guedon's butterbean farm; he operates the largest butterbean and pea shelling operation in the US right up here in Jefferson County. We affectionately refer to his operation as the Butterbean Cartel.

Jefferson County is a wonderful place. Out anti-economic development program has worked to our benefit and saved us a lot of problems with people squabbling over this and that. We have a zero crime rate though a while back there was a case of suspected attempted trespass down on White Road that led to the unfortunate accidental shooting of a cow when Mayor Ike discharged his .44 to scare off what he thought were trespassers blocking his cattle gap. A forensics team from out of Jackson found an empty whisky bottle and a discarded pair of women's underwear and classified the incident as unknown and probably not attempted trespass after all.

OldGrandDad, I am highly offended that you call my residence into question! I believe under the Equal Opportunity Act I cannot be discriminated against based on my place of origin.

I can see this is going to be a long and dirty campaign. Already I am compared Butch Brown! What next? Will my basic humanity be held up as somehow inadequate, as you hold up and wave the mere choice of where I claim homestead exemption?

It is a sad, sad day in American when a man cannot run based on merit and dreams for hope and change, but must be held to antiquated and highly biased standards of location!

EnK...Uh, your humanity is in question isn't it?...LOL. Sure would like to get hold of a jug or two of the Sisters' ethanol...might clean out my "carburetors".
