Team needs extra innings to win
Published Tuesday, June 24, 2008
BROOKHAVEN — The Natchez Coach-Pitch All-Stars had to go to extra innings to get their first win in the sub-district tournament as they defeated the Wesson All-Stars 14-12 in eight innings Monday afternoon.
“It was a very exciting game,” Natchez coach Josh Hargon said.
“We played really good defense, but we didn’t hit the ball well. We ran the bases okay. Both of them (hitting and base-running) were average.”
Which was a surprise considering that the team’s strengths are hitting and base-running while the defense has been starting to improve.
Natchez had a three-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and Wesson was down to its final out.
Yet somehow Wesson managed to tie the score at 12-12 and send the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Natchez scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead.
Wesson, however, was not able to do in the bottom of the eighth what it had done two innings earlier.
“The game could have been over in the sixth inning, but (Wesson) didn’t give up,” Hargon said. “Neither team wanted to lose this game.”
Natchez will take on Copiah in a winner’s bracket game today at 8 p.m.
Monday, Copiah rallied from a 10-0 deficit in the fourth inning to defeat Franklin County 13-11.
Also Monday, the Lincoln County Americans defeated the Lincoln County Nationals 16-3.

The coaches are great to work with the kids, but All Stars is not for Coach Pitch 8 year olds. I did not see anyone having fun, and that is what the program is for. The children were not All Stars, well ....maybe there was 1 or 2. Let the kids be kids. There is too much pressure to win.
