Bass goes from flipping hamburgers to flipping houses

Published Monday, March 3, 2008

NATCHEZ — From studs to stunning, local real estate agent and home renovator Guy Bass has been renovating homes in Natchez for decades.

“It’s satisfying work,” he said.

Standing in front of one of his newest projects in Linden Place, Bass picked yellow paint from his fingers as he took a break from painting.

And painting, Bass said is his least favorite part of house flipping.

Guy Bass paints the window trim of a house on Linden Place in Natchez. Bass has been renovating houses in Natchez for decades.

Guy Bass paints the window trim of a house on Linden Place in Natchez. Bass has been renovating houses in Natchez for decades.

“This is about 30 gallons of painting by hand,” he said looking over the exterior of a bright yellow house.

Bass said older homes, like most found in Natchez, were built very close together and that makes spray-gun painting almost impossible.

Bass said the slightest breeze will coat nearby homes and even cars with a mist of paint.

But painting aside Bass said he truly enjoys his work.

With the exception of air conditioning, plumbing and electrical work Bass said he and his business partner do all their own renovation work.

“It’s a lot of hard work but it pays off,” he said. “When you can look back at a finished product it’s very rewarding.”

Bass’ most recent project, a small home built in the 1950s, is almost ready to hit the market.

But the house was almost completely ruined when a large tree fell on top of it.

Bass acquired the house after the original owner removed the tree and re-roofed the house.

“Each project has its own challenges,” he said.

However Bass has overcome the challenges brought on by his latest project.

Looking at the house it’s impossible to tell that it once supported a tree.

But in Bass’ line of work challenges are par for the course.

Bass said since most of the houses he has worked on are old they all have quirks.

“Nothing’s ever square or ever level,” he said.

But in Bass’ years he has learned to overcome the challenges that 100 years of settling can bring.

Bass said he flipped his first house on North Pearl Street when he was still in his early 20s.

He bought the property for less than $9,000.

After years of working in the restaurant business and flipping houses part-time Bass said he decided to flip fulltime about a year and a half ago.

But in all those years Bass has worked in countless homes in Natchez.

And in that time Bass has unknowingly formed a legacy of sorts simply by the sheer number of houses he has worked on.

“I want to quality work,” he said. “It’s what I can do to help save Natchez.”

Here is a man that started off flipping burgers and made something out of his spare time. If the black communtiy wants someone to look up to in Natchez, here he is. It is not Shaquille, Air McNair, or any other sports hero. Try the local guy that did not let his lack of silver spoon in his mouth hold him down.

Here is your real hero. Try to be more like him, and not the latest gangsta rapper that will be shot to death before he is 30 years old...

Go Guy !

While others sit around and criticize you actually DO something to
improve our area.

Keep up the good work !

redusmfan, since Guy is a white man I seriously doubt the black community will look up to him. He is a very talented man, I have seen his work and wish he would "flip" my house!

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Guy has a way of turning crap into chic. I've seen what he's done over the years and I have always been impressed!

Freedom,
it is not the color of his skin. He started out just as porr as the black kids yall seem to be crying about on here.

Quit judging by the color of his skin and look at where he came from. If they can't see past the color of his skin, the shame on them That is what mlk was all about. Why does his skin color have to be the only factor that blacks want to vote for or look up to.

WAKE UP NATCHEZ!!!!!!!!!

He's a nice, hard working "guy" and he's found a way to make some money in Natchez, which isn't easy to do.

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hmmmm!! ((redusmfan)) I applaud anyone in Natchez who is actively doing something (other than offering lip service) to improve Natchez. Guy Bass should be inspiration for us all -- not just the Black community. The Black community has some Guy Basses", too. However, they haven't made the Natchez Democrat.

It is a shame, though, that some people only see things in BLACK and WHITE; always judging people based on their color and not the content of their character; always playing the race card. Really shameful.

Race always factors into ((freedom42's)) comments. So, ((redusmfan)) is race what prompted your initial comment???

Posted by notabigot (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

redusmfan, Guy did not start out poor. He grew up in the same neighborhood I did, and, while it was not Beau Pre, it was nice. The burger flipping refers to Guy and Davids very successful restaurant ventures, such as Pearl Street Pasta. Guy is very good at everything he does, and a very nice person to boot. I do not understand how on earth this turned into a racial thing.

Way to go Guy!!! You have gone from making some of the best cuisine I have ever put in my mouth to flipping houses. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Maybe we will see you on HGTV's program "flip that house"

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 10:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

hey red, I am not judging by the color of his skin. YOU were the one who brought color into it, I just stated - OH NEVER MIND, now that johnson is into it she will definately turn anything I say racist when she is the biggest one on here. And if you read my past posts you would know I do NOT cry about the "poor blacks". WHY does anything written in the Democrat turn into a race issue?

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 10:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

freedom, it does seem that way, doesn't it. Everything has to be turned into a race issue. There are a few who scan people's words, just hunting like wildfire to catch someone alluding to race. Or they create it themselves. We are all human beings with feelings and as long as we get jumped on for expressing them, there will always be a "but you REALLY meant..." line of rhetoric we have to deal with. I love people so much and it really hurts when I see this happen.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 11:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

thanks kpage. I think I know who you are talking about. And I get so tired of it. I too love all people, but hate the stupidity thas some show when they could be much better people and really be an asset for Natchez.

I see a repetitive pattern here

families that care should realize they can take control and save their children

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 11:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, I hate the stupidity that some people show when they post comments like this:

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 8:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)

"redusmfan, since Guy is a white man I seriously doubt the black community will look up to him...."

NOW THAT'S A STUPID COMMENT! And, you have the audacity to further state:

" . . . WHY does anything written in the Democrat turn into a race issue?"

DUH?!?!?!? . . . because YOU make it one!!!

Talk about throwing a rock and hiding your hand!!

As for probably making an inference to me based on ((kpage's)) comment, well, both of you know I couldn't care less what you think about me. Your comments, past and present, have painted a very clear picture of who you are and what you think. When you imply otherwise, you're only fooling yourselves -- ((redusmfan) and others have pointed the obvious out, too. Let's get real!!!!

Posted by naturegirl (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 12:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have just recently started reading here but I had to go look at this ijohnsons and freedom42s posts. WOW. ijohnson you seem to be a real nut case. I can't see where freedom42 has made any bad remarks about you but for some reason you are really down on them. I think you ijohnson are the one who wants to turn everything into a racist statement. You are one wacked out person, have you ever thought about seeing a doctor and getting some drugs to help you feel less paranoid?

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 12:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

*LOL ((naturegirl)) . . . ooooohhhhh . . . what an assessment!! Can I attribute your assessment to reading ALL my posts or YOUR inability to see past color, too! Or, should I attribute it to the fact that you're probably ((kpage's)) alter-ego! ((kpage)) seems to be obsessed with my state of mind. However, being that she is the "psych" student who has failed at life, based on her own admissions, I wouldn't be surprised. Ha!! However, it's real easy to call people names and make false assumptions when you're hiding behind this computer screen and a ficticious name! But you call me paranoid . . . what a joke!!!

Posted by naturegirl (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 12:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have no idea who kpage is or freedom42 or even you for that matter. And no I didn't read all your posts, why should I. You are undoubtabley a crazy person. There is no effort on your part to even try to understand where anyone else is coming from, that to me marks someone on the verge of unreality. Remember I just got here and first impressions are important. Yours was not too good.

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 1:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, ((naturegirl)) play dumb. You claim that you JUST GOT HERE but you're real quick to attack me. Just check the comments and you will find that I didn't introduce race into these comments. Now, my dear, that SPEAKS VOLUMES about you and your agenda!

Posted by ijohnson (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 1:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Lastly, ((naturegirl)) you stated above:

"There is no effort on your part to even try to understand where anyone else is coming from, that to me marks someone on the verge of unreality."

Well, in my FIRST comment I stated:

". . . So, ((redusmfan)) is race what prompted your initial comment???"

Any sane, rational person, without an agenda, would see that question as an attempt to see where someone else is coming from in their statement without making an assumption. I think YOU need to get a grip on reality. You are VERY delusional.

Posted by peaceout (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 2:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

i wish that the Democrat would worry more about the racist posts here instead of someone making a comment about who someone lives with when it's open knowledge anyway. do you think that they are ashamed of it? i knew that my comment would be taken down with lightning speed, yet the racist garbage just stays forever with nobody removing it. something is just not right here. let's see how long it takes for this to come down.

Posted by notabigot (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 2:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think I can explain that, peaceout. The number of hits this website gets everyday is the number The Democrat uses to sell their advertising, which is the way a newspaper makes money. If you look back through this website, everytime race is made an issue, the comments are many. It increases their circulation numbers. In short, we are being exploited.

i know about the hits and all, but who would want this kind of thing in their newspaper? i'd ban these ppl in a New York second from ever having a chance to get through to this site to post ever again. then maybe the decent ppl with brains, who would like to post but don't, would'nt mind voicing their valid opinions.

Posted by notabigot (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 2:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I completely agree, peaceout. What bothers me the most about it is that anytime someone googles Natchez they are going to find this site. Not very encouraging to anyone thinking of opening a business here or relocating here.

Democrat: PLEASE remove the comment sections on this website. Nothing good can come out of this. This story is a great example of how the comments ruin a non contraversial story. These comments do nothing but hurt people. Most of what is said here is rumor or speculation or uninformed opinion. Nothing good can come out of this except for your traffic count and your profit at the cost of this community. Cease these comment sections.

I'll admit I am almost speechless. This article is on a good person, trying to do good for Natchez, and it gets turned into a podium for johnson. She blasts everybody who doesn't agree with her, and don't think any of you are safe. As soon as you venture a statement she takes as wrong in her eyes - you'll get it from her. She can turn on a dime and spew venom quicker than a rattlesnake. My first reaction was to just delete myself from posting - I guess you can do that - but that would be a win for her. NO WAY. This is a free forum, but I PROMISE never to mention race or color in any way again. Let's see how long she can last.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 3:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Which man are you guys talking about Shaq or Guy?
I agree that both of them are great human beings, one is just a lot wealther and taller!

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 3:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'll get on that wagon with you, freedom42. Who gives a donkey's ear what color any of us are on this forum? I realize there are some issues that are sensitive in that way, but maybe we can use this medium to understand better where people are coming from rather than stomping a foot into it and maliciously causing harm. ijohnson isn't the only one, and some days even I may be overly passionate (for lack of a better word) about an issue.

Thanks for pointing out my "failure in life", ijohnson. It takes failure to appreciate success, just as it takes people hating to show me what real love is. For that, I thank you.

kpage, you are only a failure if you think you are. I myself am a winner - not a whinner as our "friend" is. Life is full of hard knocks, and nobody knows how hard anybody else has been knocked down or how hard they have tried to get back up. What we should do, is encourage each other in life, and get on with it. Not look to the past continually and whine about what has happened to us.

I am with you on that freedom42.

Posted by kpage (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 3:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey nature and freedom...we just might could get a good thing started here. All because Guy Bass hammered a few nails in some planks! If we are "attacked" by one of the Angry Few, just try to find the best thing in the situation or consider the source. If they can't make me smile, I'll be damned if they make me angry!

Posted by naturegirl (anonymous) on March 3, 2008 at 3:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This has been quite an introduction. Is there anyone else I need to watch out for?

Dear Editor,
I appreciate free speech, that is why I read the comments and sometimes make some. I have but one request, please do more editing.

nature, it changes sometimes. I think it depends on what side of the bed some people get up on in the morning! Generally, I do smile at "the angry few" - I really like that!
I think I better turn the puter off with the storm we are having. My friend with a weather radio just called that alerts are going out. Take care everyone.

I only have one question; Is this really the democrat, or have we all stepped into the twilight zone?

Posted by bangga (anonymous) on March 13, 2008 at 5:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why is everyone talking about race? This has nothing to do with race. Anyone can learn how to fix and flip houses, whether you are black, white, or any other color. It's not hard. Just learn how to do it, and then, do it. If this article shows anything it is that you don't need any special skills or talent, just dedication and persistence.

Peace007 said, "Is this really the democrat, or have we all stepped into the twilight zone?"

Race tends to do that; sends people off the topic and over the edge. But fixing houses has nothing to do with race. Nothing. It's an opportunity that is open to "anyone". There's lot's of free information about it. Just type "flipping houses" into Google and you'll overwhelmed with how-to informtion. There are tons of ebooks about it, people are even promoting them with video ads. Take a look at this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujhsky0UQ...

For anyone who genuinely wants to get ahead there's really no excuse. Especially now with the internet, all the information is out there. Bringing race up in an article like this is just a cover for people too lazy to do anything to improve their lives. When you get into real estate you discover there are just as many people fixing houses who are black as any other ethnic origin. None of this is about race, it's about who you are as a person.
