Obama, McCain win Mississippi
Published Wednesday, March 12, 2008
JACKSON (AP) — Barack Obama coasted to victory in Mississippi’s Democratic primary Tuesday, latest in a string of racially polarized presidential contests across the Deep South and a final tune-up before next month’s high-stakes race with Hillary Rodham Clinton in Pennsylvania.
Obama was winning roughly 90 percent of the black vote but only about one-quarter of the white vote, extending a pattern that carried him to victory in earlier primaries in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana.
His triumph seemed unlikely to shorten a Democratic marathon expected to last at least six more weeks — and possibly far longer — while Republicans and their nominee-in-waiting, Sen. John McCain, turn their attention to the fall campaign.
‘‘Now we look forward to campaigning in Pennsylvania and around the country,’’ Maggie Williams, Clinton’s campaign manager, said in a written statement that congratulated Obama on his victory.
‘‘I’m confident that once we get a nominee, the party is going to be unified,’’ Obama said as he collected his victory.
But in a race growing more contentious, he took a swipe at the way his rival’s campaign has conducted itself.
‘‘We’ve been very measured in terms of how we talk about Senator Clinton,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve been careful to say that I think Senator Clinton is a capable person and that should she win the nomination, obviously, I would support her. I’m not sure we’ve been getting that same approach from the Clinton campaign,’’ he said on CNN.
Returns from 80 percent of Mississippi’s precincts showed Obama gaining 59 percent, to 39 percent for Clinton.
Obama picked up at least 17 of Mississippi’s 33 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, with five more to be awarded. He hoped for a win sizable enough to erase most if not all of Clinton’s 11-delegate gain from last week, when she won three primaries.
The Illinois senator had 1,596 delegates to 1,484 for Clinton. It takes 2,025 to win the nomination.
Neither of the two rivals appears able to win enough delegates through primaries and caucuses to prevail in their historic race for the nomination, a development that has elevated the importance of nearly 800 elected officials and party leaders who will attend next summer’s national convention as unelected superdelegates.
Obama leads Clinton among pledged delegates, 1,385-1,237 in The Associated Press count, while the former first lady has an advantage among superdelegates, 247-211.
There was little suspense about the Mississippi outcome, and both Clinton and Obama spent part of their day campaigning in Pennsylvania, which has 158 delegates at stake in a primary on April 22.
The volatile issue of race has been a constant presence in the historic Democratic campaign, and it resurfaced during the day in the form of comments by Geraldine Ferraro, the 1984 Democratic vice presidential candidate and a Clinton supporter.
‘‘If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept,’’ she said in an interview with the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif., that was published last Friday.
Clinton expressed disagreement with Ferraro’s comments, and said, ‘‘It’s regrettable that any of our supporters — on both sides, because we both have this experience — say things that kind of veer off into the personal.’’
Obama called Ferraro’s remarks ‘‘patently absurd.’’
Blacks, who have supported Obama in overwhelming numbers in earlier primaries, accounted for roughly half the ballots cast in Mississippi, according to interviews with voters leaving polling places.
About one in six Democratic primary voters were independents, and Clinton and Obama split their support. Another 10 percent of voters were Republican, and they preferred Clinton by a margin of 3-1.
Six in 10 Obama supporters said he should pick the former first lady as his vice presidential running mate if he wins the presidential nomination. A smaller share of Clinton’s voters, four in 10, said she should place him on the ticket.
The Republican primary provided even less suspense than the Democratic contest. McCain had already amassed enough delegates to win his party’s nomination and was in New York, attending an evening fundraiser that was expected to raise $1 million.
Adding to the uncertainty in the lengthening race between Obama and Clinton, Democrats from Florida and Michigan are pressing for their delegations to be seated at the summer convention.
Both states were stripped of their delegates by the Democratic National Committee after they held early primaries in defiance of party rules. Efforts are under way to find a compromise that would satisfy party leaders in both states as well as the candidates, although Obama and his top strategist were cool during the day to proposals for primaries-by-mail. ‘‘I think there are some concerns in terms of making sure that whatever we do is fair and votes are properly counted and the logistics make sense,’’ Obama told CNN.
Obama has defeated Clinton in primaries in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana, other states where blacks cast a large share of the ballots.
Exit polls showed blacks accounted for a majority of the ballots in all but Louisiana, where they represented a plurality. Obama’s share of the black vote in those states ranged from 78 percent in South Carolina to 88 percent in Georgia, while Clinton won the white vote with ease.
After losing 12 straight primaries and caucuses, Clinton rebounded smartly last week with primary victories in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island. Obama won the Vermont primary, led in the Texas caucuses, and suffered a loss of only 11 delegates.
But the damage was deeper than mere numbers — costing him a chance to rally uncommitted party leaders to his side, and depriving him of an opportunity to drive the former first lady from the race.
Reinvigorated, Clinton immediately began talking about the possibility of having Obama as her running mate.
Obama ridiculed the idea, saying, ‘‘I don’t know how somebody who is in second place is offering the vice presidency to the person who is first place.’’
Other than Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota have primaries remaining.

This is indeed a big change for Mississippi.

I want to ask any of you Democrats on this forum a question. It looks like 90% of blacks voted for Obama. 75% of whites voted for Clinton. Do you believe there is a polarization of race over this nomination, and if so, do you think this, along with Florida/Michigan and superdelegates, could cause a fracture that will lead to the DNC in Denver this summer?
PS I will probably pose this question on other articles tommorrow in case you see it again. I'm just real interested in this whole political process.

Where have you been? There has been a polarization for 300 years...this is nothing new.

What a surprise!

40% of blacks and 25% of whites even admitted openly in exit polls that race played a factor in their decision. Add in the ones who said "no" to that question who really did consider race when voting for Obama or Clinton and it proves that this state is still divided among color: even in the Democrat party which is suppose to be more "modern-day" when it comes to such issues.

For those who voted for Obama ... The man has NOTHING except the ability to give a good speech. And the speeches have no substance. His foreign policy ideas are horrific. His "progressive" ideas about domestic policy are nothing but socialism. (and don't forget, socialism is the shadow of communism) What is it about this man that you like? Is it his race? If you vote for someone only because of race doesn't that make you a racist? Is it because he is not Hillary? There is very little difference between them on policy. Is it simply because he is "new and different"? That is not much reason to vote for someone for the most powerful position in the country. So please, tell me what is so wonderful about him.

My reason isn't race, but a lot of stuff that is coming out about Obama and his past that scares me. People are so wrapped up in change, they aren't really finding out who he is and what he really is for. This is for President of the United States and I think it has turned into a popularity race.
Posted by emp (anonymous) on March 11, 2008 at 10:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Swapmeet, I believe you are right that race was the major factor in the Democrat primary. I think gender had some part in it also.

I'm not just try to conjecture a reason emp. The exit polls showed this to be the cold, hard facts. I just wanted to know if anyone thinks this could do some serious damage to the DNC because of such polarization.
Posted by emp (anonymous) on March 11, 2008 at 11:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't think it will do any long term damage. After the primary most democrats will rally behind the winner. But there are some older democrats that may obstain from voting because they won't vote for a black man. I don't think anyone will leave the party because of it though.

What I can't figure out is why people are going on about Obama's skin color when in fact, they should be asking why is a muslim running for president? Why are we even considering a muslim for president?
Didn't September 11th 2001, teach us anything? The very religion that declared war on us, is now the same religion practiced by Obama.
I won't vote for a muslim, this is America, not Saudi Arabia.I'm insulted that so many American's make uninformed decisions based on a good speech.
If we vote for Obama,"incidentally sounds a lot like Osama" we will make the same mistake as we did with Bush, and his father.
Besides, how can we vote for a man who makes a mockery of the bible? How? If we vote for Obama, we seal our fate as a country.
Again, I will not vote for a muslim because our country was not founded by muslims but by God fearing Christians.

Why is the "race issue" on the table now? It has never been on the table for over 225 years.
If all Americans can give their lives on the battlefield...then all Americans can serve in any lessor capacity...especially that of President.
American blood...that is all required to serve this great country.
Any man foolish enough to cast his vote for or against a candidate based on that candidate's color is not worthy to be called an American.
I hope those who have suffered personal losses in American conflicts will overlook and forgive the silliness of our well-meaning fellow citizens that do not understand the concept of being American!!!

Emp... I think it has always been about race. If it wasn't about race why haven't a black man been elected for president? It's 2008 and this is the first black man who might actually win. Everysince I was little I have heard people say "The United States is a white man's world". What do you think about that? I'm not racist and I don't have anything aganist any race. But it is time for a change. Not saying that I'm voting for Obama. What about Clinton? It's racism both ways. You have a BLACK man and a white WOMAN. People do not want African American or women as president.
Squeetlebomb... "People are so wrapped up in change..."
Change is good but it has to be the right time. I guess people are tired of the old ways... war, unemployment, gas prices, etc. I believe its time for a change. You have innocent people fighting in a war and so many has died. For what? Their family receives money for their deaths. To me, you can't determine how much someone life is worth. These days money goes fast. Once the money has been spent then what? Umemployment rate is high. There are no GOOD jobs in Natchez. And yes I have a job and I like it but what about those who can't find a job? Everyone wants to complain about food stamps and welfare. I guess people say they have to make it some kind of way.
I don't know what the outcome of this election will be, but I pray who ever it will be is fair and will lead this country into something that will benefit ALL.

No matter who we elect, curtains will not open from the heavens, champagne will not rain down upon us and there will be no instant gratification.
There are no leaders that we will elect that can actually make a difference. Our government is no longer for the people, by the people.
Big business runs America, and as long as big business runs the world, the working class will never get ahead.
With whomever is elected,it makes no difference because the outcome will be the same. Our country will continue to decline and the working class will continue to stay behind, while the rich continue to be rich.
I think its time for revolution. The sheep truly need to be lead, for they are lost.

Who are we to say who can and can not do what they want with their body? It is their body is it not?
How would any of us feel if we were told what we could, and could not do with our body?We would be outraged. Why? Because it is our body, and we are in control of it. Noone else is, and we are not children.Noone has the right to tell us how to live our lives, and certainly, noone should have the right to mandate whether or not we can abort a fetus.
There are just some things in life that the government should not have any control over. The government can't even make decisions for itself without internal conflict, so who are they to tell us how to live our life?

Spin it, spin it . . . spin it!!!!! When Blacks vote for Obama, it is called "divided on race". However, when Blacks overwhelming supported Bill Clinton, it was called "support among Black voters".
These racial distractions are getting tiresome. Voters of ALL races are voting for Obama because they believe that he is the best candidate. Personally, I think that it's a real slap in the face to his overwhelming white supporters in Wyoming, North Dakota, Utah, Alaska, Nebraska, Maine, Vermont and Iowa to imply that he is where he is because of the Black voters. I am a proud supporter of Senator Obama because I feel he is the best candidate on the ticket.
I think these labels are divisive and not indicative of what is truly driving the momentum behind his campaign. Yes, I'm very aware of the fact that the deep South still lives and there are those who would vote for the town drunk before they would cast a vote that would put a Black man in the White House. Thank God, Obama captures a sizeable number of intelligent, upwardly mobile voters who outnumber the narrow-minded few.
His presidency would be great for America -- maybe we can heal some of these racial divides with him at the helm. Heck, I can't think of a more qualified person who would be more qualified to do it being that he is bi-racial. He does not tout his Blackness nor his Whiteness. Nor does he inject race in his messages. I think he would be a positive force for change in America and the world.

I am not a diehard Democrat or Republican so I usually vote for the person that I think will do the best job for our country. This is the way I see it:
I can not vote for someone that is Muslim and has openly admitted that he will refuse to be sworn in on the Bible. I don’t care what color his skin is, this would be detrimental to the United States to have him as president.
As for a woman, I am not against a woman president, but I feel that Hillary is not the woman for us. I just can’t see Bill laying up in the White House again eating Cheetos and reading books to small children. We don’t need the Clintons running this country again. Remember the last time and the mess it was.
So in saying this, I can only see that we have one other choice. I am not saying this is the right choice, but given what we have to choose from, McCain seems to be the only logical choice. This is just my opinion.

Silver tongue devil, wolf in sheep's clothing, remember these old adages. I could go all day with them, but would you pay any attention without getting bored and roll your eyes around and yawn, as Clinton does when she has to sit in audience of Bush's speeches. These old adages describes Obama to a T. Have you not read all the prophecies of how your destroyer will come to you. A man who will be very well dressed, good looking, and will woo you with words of deceit, who will make you believe without a doubt that he is your friend and bring you untold wealth and prosperity just for the asking. This deciever will make you believe he is your saviour, and you will never see his forked tongue or pitch fork until it is too late. Remember this: God will hold you accountable if you elect this type of person to office. Then again the prophecies say those that do not want to hear will not abide by the warning. People when are you going to wake up?

Obama is not Muslim and he did swear in on the bible. The Minnesota Rep or Senator was the one who swore in on the Quran.
When you vote make sure it is educated and informed...sadly many vote ignorantly and it counts just as much as those who are informed.

obama is the best candidate, but compared to what. hillary? mccain? not much to compare to.
as far as the deep south, MS is still mostly white. obama won the state. expain how that is possible in a racist community you so often say we live in.
I'm one of the few here that is tired of everything being race related. You keep pointing out obama is black. Is he not half white?
I'm still wondering how he has gotten this far though. The man does not have much of a track record. I feel this way about all the candidants. just not much to chose from this year.

((destiny)) you are describing BUSH to the "t"!!!! Every word you stated above has proven to be a true testament of his presidency. Bin Laden's statement that America would be destroyed from within was a bold statement quote directed at the Bush administration.
Wake up people and get real -- enough with the antics!!! You can't brainwash everybody all the time with this rhetoric. But, as Americans, you are free to try. Heck, I guess if you say it enough times, you will convince yourselves that it's true! Good luck!!!

Thick1982, voting for Clinton is only racism if you vote for her only because she is white. The reason a black man has never been elected president is quite possibly because a credible black candidate has never run before. I have no problem with a black man being president but I don’t think we should elect someone based only on race.
You say you want change…. Change from what? The lowest unemployment in the last 30 years? The safety of the American people? Fighting the war overseas instead of here?
JohnQ….. who is it that provides jobs? That would be big business. Rich people invest in businesses that give jobs to everyone else. Duh! Now for abortion. Abortion doesn’t make a person “not pregnant”. It makes the person the parent of a dead baby. The democrat party wants to tell us what kind of light bulbs we have to use but they don’t mind if you kill a baby. Think about it.
Ijohnson … Obama does mention race and so do many of his supporters. And have you read his website? I have. Here is just a small part: “It is an exciting time for African Americans, who will play a pivotal role in this election.” “There is no better advocate for African Americans than Barack Obama. Barack knows your story, because it is his story.” He doesn’t mention race? You should get to know your candidate!
Incognito… you are right that many rumors are going around the internet. When Obama was sworn into the Senate, he did so on a Bible. That is a fact. Anyone that wants the truth can find it. He was raised as a Muslim but has been a professed Christian for many years. You are also right that McCain is unstable. We don’t have a good candidate in either party but at least McCain is right on foreign policy.
We ran out of good candidates when Romney dropped out.

One problem I have with Obama is his childhood. It seems ever serial killer, child molestor etc, have their background to blame for their behaivor. Obama's Mother was a white atheist, his Dad & Step Dad both black Muslins. He was moved from state to state, went by the name Barry as a child & the confusion goes on and on. In other words he had a very complicated life. I'm sure with an atheist Mom he wasn't raised in a religious home knowing about God.
Destiny, I think there is alot in what you say. None of us know who the Anti-Christ will be, but he fits the description. Of couse read up on Prince Charles & some people think he is the Anti-Christ. So as for who the Anti-Christ we don't know.
The black people are going to be in for the surprise of their lives when he does not stand up to all these promises he has made them. We all learn by our mistakes but voting for Obabma will be the worse mistake you ever make.
We are lucky enough to live in a country that has freedom of who we vote for, but we should do research on who we vote for. Obama may claim to be a Christian, but with his upbringing it makes one wonder what he really believes in.

Just for the record Representative Keith Ellison is the Minnesota Congressman who just happens to be Muslim. He took his oath of office like every other Congressperson, without any type of religious book. In the staged photo op that was taken after the actual ceremony, Representative Ellison used a copy of the Qur'an that was originally owned by...Thomas Jefferson and is now housed in the Library of Congress. Obama is not Muslim and never has been. His father was raised as a Muslim, but later became an atheist. His mother was not religious and his step father was a non-practicing Muslim. If we are to base our perceptions of the canidates on who and what their parents were, than the entire notion of a fair electoral process, not to mention the idea that the US is a open and welcoming society, is a farce. Also, John Q the US was not founded by "God Fearing Christians." Jefferson was an atheist. Many historians argue that Washington was a deist.
As a side note- I have read the online edition of the Democrat for years. As someone who was born and raised in Natchez, I have been looking forward to the day that I could move back with my family. My wife and I are working professionals and several jobs in our fields have opened in the area over the past year or so. But one of the biggest reasons we have not applied for those positions are the comments in this section. The comments are so overwhelmingly negative and many of them are quite ignorant of well established facts. If any thing goes wrong in the city, it has to be the fault of the Historical Society or the inferior education that the bulk of the county's children are receiving at the NASD. Take a chance and actually try to make your community better.

Why are people assuming that other folks have not researched the person they choose to vote for??? I, for one, have researched ALL the candidates and I have come to the conclusion that Obama is the best candidate for me and America at this time. If I'm making a mistake, then, so be it. I'll just get in line with all the Bush supporters to claim my fame to shame!
As for all his promises to the Black people, please enlighten me because I wasn't aware that he had made any promises specifically directed toward Blacks.
In regards to his upbringing, if I recall correctly, his step-father was not Black. He was raised by his grandparents in a Christian home, in his formative years, and he had a pretty normal life basking in the sun in Hawaii.
Anyway, Christianity or one's religion shouldn't be at the forefront of every argument involving Senator Obama. I am more concerned about having a "hot head" McCain in office. He doesn't have the composure or soundness of mind to be a President. How could we sleep at night knowing he may answer the call on the red phone at 3:00am in the morning? If he ever gets that call, Lord help us!!! With his temper, we will be vaporized in an instance.
Hhhmmmmm . . . . Now, that's something to REALLY consider and give some thought to, don't you think!?!?!!?!? A vote for McCain will be a vote for disaster. (I wonder if they have collected all the little plants up yet and neatly packed them away for future replenishment of the planet?)

I know if my parents had filled me full of ideas about God or the lack of God as an adult I would have believed it or at least questioned it. You can not say what your parents taught you did not influence your life.
The way the world is I do beleive alot of people are God Fearing & have a good right to be.
This is not about race, it's about what is right for our country & Obama is not right. He makes promises that can not be kept & under his smooth talk he knows he can't keep them. He is leading the sheep to the wolves.

Well who knows if Obama is the best candidate? It won't take much character or skill to leave Bush in the dust of history. Of course a lot of good ol boys will all-of-a-sudden complain about Obama's lack of something but didn't notice the same thing about Bush.
McCain is Bush Lite, took Bushes political lies about him having a black love child in the 2000 election then supported Bush in the same election. He has no new ideas on anything, more of the same if we elect him. It might be ironic justice when he has to eat his no tax words and pay for George Bush's red ink spending.
The only thing worse than talking bad about those bad spending Democrats is to do the talk then outspend them. Everyone who is NOT complaining about the entire Republican Party has the same character defect on this one.
Hillary is finished, likely.
I say if you want something new you will get something like Obama. The politicians that have lied to you all use the same lies and most of us gobble them up year after year and make fun of the same old traits.
Do something different this time. If America could survive Bush and the corrupt congress of the same party we can survive Obama.

I'm against abortion. But you have to look at things from every angle… Times are hard and people cannot afford to have a child or another one. People are already saying there are too many on welfare. More of the younger people are having children and they can barely raise themselves. Contraception should be introduced to students in high school. Like John Q say, “Who are we to say who can and can not do what they want with their body?” In that case a lot of people are wrong because they have piercing and tattoos and we can’t stop them from doing that. Leviticus 19:28 states "You shall not make ANY CUTTINGS IN YOUR FLESH… nor TATTOO ANY MARKS on you… Therefore no one has the right to tell anyone what they shall do because 9 TIMES OF 10 you aren’t doing right yourself.

"If America could survive Bush and the corrupt congress of the same party we can survive Obama." Well, Bush had to go in there and take care of what Clinton didn't take care of! With the exception of the women in the White House! I think Clinton covered them! And also, I'm tired of just surviving in this country! It's time for me as in truly hard working americans to get ahead! It's time for the poor to get rich and the rich to get poor! Lets see how it is when the tables have turned!

Sparky, what do you mean "tired of surviving in this country"? We are the richest country in the world. Every American has the chance to have anything they desire. You should go and visit a poor country such as Honduras and see how people there live.
That's what is wrong with many people here in this country. They take EVERYTHING for granted while gripping and complaining at the same time. Whoever is chosen for president, at least we all as Americans are lucky enough to live here and have running water, a roof over our heads, electricity, automobiles, protection, and most importantly FREEDOM TO CHOOSE ANYTHING WE DESIRE.
So what if taxes increase? Maybe we should look around and see who is sucking our tax dollars! It is the lazy people of this country that is leading it into recession, NOT the president.

it's no surprise to me that Obama took MS- this was the primaries vote
People with sense tried to split the Democrat vote by voting Hillary, and ALL the blacks voted Obama
The Republican Primary was moot- McCain has the nomination and Thad C will remain in office
Now all we have to do is delight over the Democrats being split and watch them fight and be divided.

To those of you who have posted comments about looking at a candidates record before voting, this among other things, is what I learned while researching Senator Obama. Since the list is rather long, I will list them in segments. The 1st is on Crime.
Senator Obama is a strong proponent of tougher measures to fight crime and provide more resources to local law enforcement officers. He is particularly concerned about the growing problem of methamphetamine, which is ravaging many communities in Illinois.
Fighting the Spread of Methamphetamines
Senator Obama cosponsored the Combat Meth Act, which provides more money for fighting methamphetamine (meth), tightens controls on the sale of meth ingredients, and provides assistance to the children of meth abusers. The legislation would limit access to cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, the primary ingredient used to make methamphetamine. This bill passed the Senate and became law in the 109th Congress.
Senator Obama has supported greater funding to fight meth through the use of Byrne Justice Assistance Grants. The Byrne Grant program provides important funding to many local Illinois law enforcement groups. For example, the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group (SIEG), a meth taskforce that polices 31 Illinois counties, pays for 5 of its 12 agents through Byrne grants. During Senate consideration of the Department of Justice funding bill, Senator Obama cosponsored an amendment to raise Byrne funding to $900 million in 2006; the amendment passed the Senate.
Support for Local Law Enforcement
Senator Obama has been a strong supporter of efforts to increase funding and support for local law enforcement. He supported the reauthorization of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program in the 109th Congress and supports efforts to increase COPS funding. The COPS program provides local law enforcement funding for: (1) hiring and training law enforcement officers; (2) procuring equipment and support systems (3) paying officers to perform intelligence, anti-terror, or homeland security duties; and (4) developing new technologies, including inter-operable communications, and forensic technology. Since 1994, the COPS program has funded more than 5,800 additional police officers and sheriffs deputies in Illinois and over $45 million in crime fighting technology assistance.

2nd Part on Crime
Sex Offenders
Senator Obama cosponsored Dru's Law which creates a nationwide sex offender database and requires greater monitoring of sex offenders upon their release from prison. The bill passed the Senate in July of 2005. This legislation was incorporated into a larger bill, the Adam Walsh Child Protection Act, which Senator Obama supported and which has been signed into law.
He also cosponsored the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. This bill increases the penalties for sex crimes against children under the age of 12 and creates a national Internet site known as the National Sex Offender Public Registry. The bill would also provide grants to local law enforcement to assist in preventing and investigating sex crimes against minors.
Senator Obama is a cosponsor of the KIDS Act, which requires convicted sex offenders to provide their Internet identifiers, such as e-mail addresses and instant message addresses, for inclusion into the national sex offender registry.
Violence Against Women Act
Senator Obama cosponsored the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act which passed the Senate on October 4, 2005 and was subsequently signed into law. The Act provides important funding and assistance to help communities, non-profit organizations, and law enforcement combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The Act establishes a sexual assault services program and provides grants for education programs to prevent domestic violence and encourage reporting of abuses.
Security for Federal Judges
After the horrific murder of an Illinois federal judge's mother and husband, Senator Obama and Senator Durbin worked together to beef up security at our federal courthouses. The Illinois senators secured $12 million to improve security for federal judges. Senator Obama also joined Senator Durbin in requesting a Government Accountability Office investigation into additional steps that can be taken to protect judges.

Lay it on Natchezbum
you're telling em like it is
but one thing though - with the fed reserve dropping interest rates to historial lows, an ARM right now is cool, your adjustable rate has plummeted the last six months, I'm very satisfied that mine will lock in around 5% - thank you fed reserve and Concordia Bank
OPEC can kiss my youknowwhat - you are so right they are gouging the world. Thanks largely to Hugo Chavez' influence, but he'll be gone soon. I hear there is activity on his border that will bring him great frustration in regards to the "rebels" he is supporting that are attacking Columbia to attempt to stir up war. I hear there are U. S. operatives there killing these Venezuelan troublemakers(Columbian rebels that are trying to overthrow the Columbian gov't) in large numbers.
I think that is one thing we should all consider about Obama
That boy has no foreign affairs experience and his utopian idealism will be shattered when he realizes what is going on around the world. I guess he thinks most of us are so foolish to think that we should just make friends with all the socialists and communists and islamic fanatic terrorists in the world and they will l be so pacified by Obama's friendship that all hostilities will cease. Give me a break, Obama hasn't said a word about how he will deal with our enemies, other than withdraw troops immediately, which will certainly plummet the world into war and chaos. Then we won't have any choice but to fight, at least then it will be obvious from the mass mayhem within our borders what must be done. It's likely that folks in small towns will suffer the least. People - get your survival gear ready- generators, ammo, weapons, stock up canned goods and bottled water , etc because war could come to our streets if we don't keep up the attack outside our borders. You liberals that don't have guns or a garden will be at risk the most as you will not have any adequate self-defense and will go hungry.

what about the dirt on Obama with his billionaire muslim friend (ouchy - I know that is not spelled right, but that is the pronunciation) that bought him the big Georgia style mansion in Chicago, and the real estate felon - Rezko- that he is tied to . Obama even admits it was a boneheaded mistake to get involved with him. Turns out this guy is his neighbor in Chicago.
I can't wait till Hillary gets fired up and starts getting nasty. I'm sure she is working hard to dig up ALL the dirt on Obama. You know Illinois politics are worse than Louisiana - WAY CORRUPT!!

I was looking at Obama's record of accomplishments made since he had been in office, it appears that his concern is for all Americans. My comment was not meant as an argument, but rather an opinion on MY research. I didn't look up the dirt on either candidate, because the Bible says all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating that wrong is right. As for Rezko, I don't agree with the label of guilt by association because we can all be deceived.

Those are the kind of changes people silently are looking for. I don't mean to sterotype all white males but many white males in leadership position have fallen to these behaviors. I think it's time to give somebody else a chance to clean up this mess. I'm are tired of being the laughing stock of the wold with the hipocrisy..Do as I say and not as I do. for crying out loud..
Obama is NOT a muslim. Period.
Even if he were, I could care less. I'm just as worried about christian zealots as I am muslim ones, and I don't see a lot of sensible christians taking out the clinic bombing nutcases that would fall into the "lunatic fringe" section of their religion.
Maybe you staunch Republican conservatives have forgotten about this, what with Bush finishing every sentence with "God bless" or some-such to keep people nice and complacent and get their support no matter what he does.. BUT, the point is that RELIGION AND STATE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SEPARATE. End of story. Sure, Christian interests have been thrown a few cookies to keep some people happy the last eight years, but guess what?? It's NOT supposed to work like that.
Not too long back, a radio host out of New Jersey pulled a prank by claiming that the government was suggesting the idea that all muslim citizens be required to show identification of their religious status. People called in suggesting things as far as tattooing muslim symbols onto people and making them wear patches on their clothes to identify themselves. After about four hours of these calls and taking suggestions and comments, the radio host announced that it was a hoax and that he was disgusted by the reactions of the people calling in.
Why? Because these were the first steps taken by Hitler when he began his persecution of jews.
Worse still, I think a lot of people on this board would do the same thing if it were up to them. We got into as much trouble with Bush as we did because he played on fear, ignorance, and more fear. Now we're desperately in debt, our dollar is worthless, and we have a lot of young enlisted people DEAD... for.. what?
Look around you... the economy is toast, lots of people are out of work, lots of people are sick and can't get any help, gas is getting more expensive every day. You really want MORE years of republican leadership?

Free contraception (condoms and pills) are given out at the Health Center, paid for with out tax money. These kids can get all the info and help they want to keep from having babies - and I wish they would use it.

With all the talk about our great country, I thought I would add food for thought from an email I recently received:
1. If you woke up in good health this morning, you have more luck than one million people, who won’t live through the week.
2. If you have never experienced the horror of war, the solitude of prison, the pain of torture, were not close to death from starvation, then you are better off than 500 million people.
3. If you can go to your place of worship without fear that someone will assault or kill you, then you are luckier than 3 billion (that’s right) people.
4. If you have a full fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are wealthier than 75% of the world’s population.
5. If you currently have money in the bank, in your wallet and a few coins in your purse, you are very fortunate because most do not.
6. If your parents are still alive and still married you are a rare individual.
7. If you can read this post you are extremely lucky that you are not among the 2 billion people in this world that can’t read.
This is a great country that we live in and we have plenty to be thankful for. No matter who our next President is, I feel fortunate that I was born the this great country and not somewhere else.

Freedom- since you mention sex ed and all
have you heard the latest on STD's across the country on average:
50% of black girls have one
20% of white girls have one
there is a new STD organism - mycoplasma genitalia that can pass right through a condom
the organism is so small it goes right through the pores of latex condoms
not that it bothers me(I'm married and faithful) but not many people know about the
rapid spread of mycoplasma diseases that are becoming epidemics - there are a range of symptoms such as arthritis and other joint, connective tissue ailments- I don't know all the details as this information is just getting out. There aren't many doctors that even know about it, but it's beginning to appear in newspapers - google it up and spread the alarm.

Since I work for a living I have been away from the computer most of the day. But I would like to respond to some of the Bush bashing that has been going on. I voted for Bush over McCain in the primary eight years ago. I voted for Bush twice since then. Do I agree with all he does? Of course not! If I agreed with anyone completely I would be a useless, mindnumb robot (no offense to liberals). I agree with Bush about 75% of the time. In my opinion he has made mistakes just like every other president in history. But here's the thing... In 2000, the race was between George W. Bush and Al Gore. AL GORE!!! It was an obvious choice for me. Al Gore is an idiot and a lier. Anyone who looks at the global warming hoax can see that. In 2004, the race was between George W. Bush and John Kerry. John Kerry, people! At least Kerry was more intelligent than Gore, but it was still an easy choice. But back to Bush's record...
History will show that George W. Bush has stood by his principals (right or wrong) on the issues no matter what the polls show. He prays for leadership from God every day just as many of our forefathers did.
I'm sure some of you want to know what I don't like about bush. If you don't want to know, tough. I'm telling you anyway. He spends money like a drunk democrat. The tax cuts were great. And tax cuts always bring higher government revenue. Its a proven fact. But Bush acts like as long as he has checks, he's not out of money. There are some other problems I have with him but this is the biggest. But I still agree with him 75% of the time. The only president in my lifetime who had a higher rating for me was Ronald Reagan. I long for the days of the Gipper!

It's so obvious why Mississippi is on the bottom..........I attended Senator Obama's rally...There was a diverse crowd of individuals seeking to meet a STRONG, INTELLECTUAL, AND INTELLIGENT MAN WITH A VISION OF CHANGE FROM THE POOR THOUGHTS OF IGNORANCE... This statement is quoted from a Baptist Minister who spoke at the rally...Rev. Lowery..."America we are living in a time where the Brown are still around..the Black won't sit back, the Red will be led, the Yellow with stay mellow, and the white will be alright."..........too bad he didn't know we still have some changing of ourselves here in the Crooked Mississippi..........It's so sad that we have to live by the color of our skin not by the knowledge in our minds.....One important fact that I know Sen. Obama can change for me would be Education....The day that we (teachers) don't have to teach to the test but teach our future children the skills and courses that will allow them to prosperous thinkers and educated workers...Not test takers.....And Obama is a Christian...get the facts right....www.barakaobama.com...

Silver tongue devil, wolf in sheep's clothing, remember these old adages. (Destiny, You must be talking about Songbird McCain). I could go all day with them, but would you pay any attention without getting bored and roll your eyes around and yawn, as Clinton does when she has to sit in audience of Bush's speeches. (That's because Hillary knew he was telling lies).
These old adages describes Obama to a T. Have you not read all the prophecies of how your destroyer will come to you. (sounds more like George Bush). A man who will be very well dressed, good looking, and will woo you with words of deceit, who will make you believe without a doubt that he is your friend and bring you untold wealth and prosperity just for the asking. (I wouldn't go so far as to describe Obama as good looking; however, he does dress well...and I know that he is not a muslim, because a muslim wouldn't allow his wife to show that much skin).
This deciever will make you believe he is your saviour, and you will never see his forked tongue or pitch fork until it is too late. Remember this: God will hold you accountable if you elect this type of person to office (sounds like republican fear/terror words). Then again the prophecies say those that do not want to hear will not abide by the warning (more republican terror). People when are you going to wake up? (hmmm huh, McCain has many believing he was a real P.o.W. and not given any preferential treatment, at Hanoi Hilton, for being the son of an admiral, and singing like a canary for favors) (he has some veterans believing he will make things better for veterans, while those who sat in the camp with him know what happened) (How he's treated Vietnam veterans and mothers of POWs who only wanted to go and find MIA/POWs is the real and true McCain).

Plans are being made for the installation of an information storage bank on the moon, experts said at a science meeting Strasbourg, France.
The so-called "Doomsday ark" would provide the tools for the reconstruction of the human race in case civilization is ever destroyed, The Sunday London Times reported.
The ark's basic version, which would be buried close to the moon's surface, would include hard discs containing DNA information and instructions for growing crops and metal making, the report said.
The underground vault reportedly would transmit data to strongly guarded receivers on Earth.
"Eventually, it will be necessary to have a kind of Noah's ark there, a diversity of species from the biosphere," scientist Bernard Foing said.

Peace007, thank you for the post on the number of votes missed by each candidate. This is just an assumption, but they were probably campaigning, it appears that most votes were missed recently. All of this is interesting to me though because I love to read and research issues. Again thanks.

emp thanks for bringing that up. I wanted to but I have been called racist too many times on here and got so tired of it I promised not to mention the race word in what some consider a negative context. However I will say I can see what destiny is saying, but how peace 007 thinks it fits Bush is unreal. Peace needs to go back to her romance novels.

What really gets me is the way some of you are so willing to hang Bill Clinton for having a sexual relationship with another woman other than his spouse, but yet, you seem to be blind to anything sexual done by a republican such as Bush or McCain. Both McCain and Bush are guilty of adultery and you have no problem with that...you are most forgiving. This is just one example of do as I say but not as I do republican family values. Not only are you willing to hang Bill for his mistake, you would also hang Hillary, while you praise McCain's current spouse who committed adultery with him while he was married to his ex-wife.
You get offended by any remark made about Bush or McCain, but you have no problem making snide remarks about Bill Clinton and Hillary.

I don't believe I ever brought up the adultry issue on anyone. Having been a victim of adultry, I DO NOT condon it in anyone - but I also DO NOT base my vote or judgement on a candidates personal life. If I did that, who would it leave me to vote for? I base my choice on who I honestly believe would best serve our country - what they do in their private lives is none of my business, unless it interfers with the running of the United States.
Personally I prefer Sci-Fi, mystery, and non-fiction. Right now I am caught between C.S. Lewis's "The Great Divorce", about heaven and hell; and Christopher Paolini's "Eldest" which is the sequel to "Eragon". Good reading.

krjjsu, some people just continue to bury their heads in the sand don't they - you included. Obama is NOT a Christian. Look at what he really is - and you will see the devil.

naturegirl, if you look in the mirror long enough, you will also see the devil...give it a try...then, rebuke yourself in Jesus name...get thee behind me Satan. After you do that think about this...why did God make Moses hand turn white as a sign to the Hebrew people that he was to be their deliverer? It is my guess that Moses wasn't exactly white, nor were the Hebrew people, or his hand turning white wouldn't have been too significant. Why did God turn Miriam white, as a curse on her, for becoming jealous and talking against Moses to Aaron? Miriam must not have been exactly white either. Why did the black tribes in Africa think that a white albino baby born into a family was a curse on the tribe? They were just ignorant about melanin, or in the case of the albino...lack of.
