Two Ferriday cops plead not guilty to charges

Published Thursday, May 1, 2008

VIDALIA — Two of the individuals indicted after a grand jury investigation into the Ferriday Police Department appeared in court Wednesday.

Ferriday police officer John Hawkins and former officer Juanita January both pleaded “not guilty” to the charges a Concordia Parish grand jury brought against them.

Hawkins is charged with false imprisonment, malfeasance in office and simple battery. He is currently free on a $15,500 bond.

January, who no longer resides in Concordia Parish, is charged with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile for alleged sexual contact with a minor younger than the age of 17 during 2006 and 2007.

January was released on a $20,000 bond after she was booked at the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office March 19.

Both Hawkins and January are represented by the public defender’s office, Hawkins by attorney Andy Magoun and January by public defender director Derrick Carson.

The indictments were handed down in March after an investigation by the grand jury that lasted from October 2007 to February 2008.

A trial of motions, a legal step preceding trial, was set for the defendants for July 25.

Ferriday Officer Rickey Hollins and former officer Willie B. Robinson were arraigned on charges connected to the investigation last week, and both pleaded “not guilty.”

Hollins was arraigned on charges of false imprisonment, simple battery and aggravated assault, and Robinson is charged with malfeasance in office and false imprisonment.

A civilian, Arthur Johnson, was also arraigned and pleaded “not guilty” to charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in connection with the investigation last week.

Former Ferriday Police Chief Robert “Rock” Davis is charged with malfeasance in office and false imprisonment and has not yet appeared in court.

That John Hawkins is real peace of work. I was in visiting from Georgia. I own land in Ferriday and was there for the Holidays and he pulled me over in that speed trap in Ferriday. I was doing 60 mph in 55mph but he said it changed from 45mph. I was miles away from the 45mhp and he came chasing me down the highway and wrote me ticket. That when I started bypassing Ferriday. I had best friend of mine come from Alexandria to Atlanta to visit me and he pulled him over @ the red light by sonic and said he ran the red light. All they wanted is the money.....
I hope the new mayor can make something happen there.
Its been a ghost town all of my life. My father was born in clayton and grew up as child in Ferriday.

Dear gwhiii, glad to hear from you about that incident, I thought it was just me. I was driving to Tensas on a saturday afternoon passing by Wal-Mart building & Ferriday Market travaling 45mph. Once you pass Dollar General next door, the speed sign changes to 55mph, 10-20 feet later the speed sign changes to 65mph. I got a ticket because the officer said I excellorated to 55mph right before I reached the 55mph sign. And that I could not do 55mph a feet before the sign although I was headed out of town on a four-lane highway in the country. Court is at 6pm on Tuesdays. I worked in Alexandria @ 5:30pm so I paid the $100

Its going to be hard to find a jury who hasn't had a ticket by one of these officers.
