Ferriday man in hospital after Sunday altercation

Published Tuesday, May 6, 2008

FERRIDAY — A Ferriday man is in the hospital after the man he wouldn’t let walk away from a fight grew tired of fighting.

Kerry Brooks, 31, 163 Abraham Lane, was arrested on a bench warrant Sunday on charges of seat belt violation, aggravated assault, second-degree battery, criminal damage to property and cruelty to a juvenile.

But after he was booked he wasn’t taken to jail — he was taken to a hospital.

Brooks allegedly got into an altercation with another man on Alabama Avenue, but when he confronted the other man with a box cutter the other man tried to walk away, Ferriday Police Chief Richard Madison said.

As the other subject was walking away, Brooks allegedly followed him to the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Alabama Avenue, picked up a metal object off the ground and broke the back window out of the other subject’s car, Madison said.

When Brooks did that, it scattered broken glass over children sitting in the back seat of the car, reportedly causing some minor injuries, Madison said.

At that time, Brooks allegedly tried to continue the altercation by getting in the other subject’s car, Madison said.

“In the process of trying to defend himself, the other subject used a force he perceived to be adequate to cause the subject to not continue to attack him,” Madison said.

Brooks was taken to Riverland Medical Center, from which he was transferred to Natchez Regional Medical Center and then transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.

Brooks is currently in stable condition, Madison said.

The other individual was not charged with anything because he was defending himself, Madison said.

No bond has been set for Brooks’ charges at this time.

I am glad the other subject used NECESSARY FORCE to end the situation. I hope they keep this fool in the hospital and then the jail for a long time. I hope his ignorance is not contagious......

Well he wanted a fight and look where it got him. Serves him right.

I noticed the victim used a force he felt necessary to make Brooks leave him alone. Haaaaa! It ain't mentioning WHAT force he used, but it was enough to get him transported to Shreveport! That's a hoot! Those poor kids in the car! I hope they are alright after going through this crap. They probably had nightmares. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

I wish I knew the victim's name. I'd send him a sincere "Thank You" for his smart move in protecting those babies.

Couldn't old Brooks get an attemped carjacking charge for this?

Just because you walk away from a fight doesn't make you less of a man as Mr. Brookes found out.Kudos to the other gentleman for doing just enough to defend his family and to the Ferriday P.D. for not arresting him.

I am truly amazed and appalled how people are so quick to pass judgement on an individual based on what is obviously a one-sided story. As a former Ferriday native, it saddens me that the state of the town's police force, as well as the quality of the town have gone to the dumps. All the comments I've read have all referenced the children that were in the vehicle, but no one is interested in knowing what happened to provoke the fight, nor why the "victim" placed these children in harm's way or what were, if any, the witness accounts of this matter.

It is always important to stick to the facts, "phatdiva 76". Nothing in this article referenced the subject being a "woman beater". It is apparent that your opinion is greatly clouded by hearsay or other outside influences.

As far as Mr. Brooks getting his "issue" as stated, violence of any kind does not beget violence. I understand that one must defend themselves when necessary, but for the "Chief of Police" to not look at the matter from every angle is not only a disgrace to the families affected, but also to effective and proper law enforcement as a whole.

"Kmonii05" FYI I was there on the scene and I know bought parties. He beat his wife until she left him and top of all that Mr. Brooks has a temper out of this world. Matter of fact he was trying to cut his new girlfriend and someone called her brother to the rescue. Now "Kmonii05" I knew what happened beforehand. That's why I stated what I stated. Mind ya business and don't worry about what I type.
Facts is what it is, Boo!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting comment, "phatdiva76". Like you, I am entitled to my opinion. Unless you were the person that was assaulted by Mr. Brooks, the matter is STILL none of YOUR business. The newspaper is not a median in which an individual is tried and convicted. That is done so by a jury of their "peers". The article is an account as told by the police department of what happened on THAT night and nothing before that. If you choose to comment...Comment on what is being reported and not on what you "claim" to know about what happened in the past.

Let's get one thing clear, I am really not concerned about what you type...Again, it is only one person's OPINION, which at this time is a moot point. I am merely commenting on all the comments that were made and how people in "general" are quick to judge one another. But one thing is crystal clear. You are truly the epitome of what Ferriday has become today. Furthermore, "Phatdiva76" you should be careful as to comment on legal issues and personal character of people that you can not prove beyond a reasonable doubt, as that might involve you in a future slander/liable lawsuit. Just looking out for you "Boo".
