Charges dropped against man arrested for stealing vehicle

Published Thursday, May 8, 2008

NATCHEZ — The charges for a man who was arrested Sunday morning for possession of a stolen vehicle have been dropped.

Timothy Woods, 22, 144 O’Brien St., was pulled over after driving the wrong way on a one-way road and after his information was checked by police, the car was identified as being stolen from Garland, Texas.

Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said the Garland Police Department had enough information to realize Woods did not steal the vehicle.

Woods was previously being held for the Texas agency.

“They would not extradite him,” Mullins said.

With this evidence, the charges have been dropped against Woods.

So this means you can drive a stolen car as long as you aren't the one who stole it? Wow. I'm gonna save money on my next vehicle. Anyone know any good car thieves?

WOW. It's all I can say.

He may have bought it from whoever stole it not knowing it was stolen....It could happen....

Fire39212, I thought about that as well, but isn't that being in possession of stolen property, I didn't know ignorance of that, was justified. Teach me, I am learning something here, or does a person have to KNOWINGLY buy something stolen, only to be held culpable?

this is plausible, at best. Did he not get a title when he bought it? Was he waiting for the title to come in? What is his story? But, I bet they can follow the trail all the way back to the thief, IF THEY WANT TO!! But it is just a car, no big deal in this country anymore...it means nothing, nothing at all....

It only took 5 years to follow the trail back to the cemetary across the river to get a headstone back to the right grave.

What about the driving violation??????

Posted by redusmfan (anonymous) on May 8, 2008 at 11:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I hope he has to pay the ticket for driving the wrong way down a one way street....It is the least the police can do ...lol....

My aunts van got stolen out of her yard in Jackson. You may have seen her on TV. She is disabled and the report was filed and JPD were "looking" for it. Well, 2 months later, the JPD called her and told her if she did not get her "abondoned" vehicle out of the impound yard, they were going to ticket her for it. When her son, my cousin, went to look at the van, it had debit card receipts in it from the guy that had been driving it. And the police told her, " It Is Just A Car'" It is not important anymore...larceny and grand theft auto mean nothing......

This country is headed to hell in a handbasket...And nobody cares and the band plays on......just like Nero fiddling, our judicial system is walking around with blinders on....saying things are ok...

Seems like the Chief of the Garland, Texas Police Department needs to update his Department's Policy and Procedure's!

years ago, while in Memphis, my Surburban was stolen from a lighted parking lot with a "security" guard. The police found it the next day and took my 16 yr old son to get it. He had only had his license 2 weeks! I was at St. Judes Childrens Hospital with my sick child and he was at the hotel. The car was in a very bad neighborhood, had everything taken out that they could take out, and yet the police just told my son to drive it back to the hotel and file on the insurance! He didn't even know his way out of the area to get back to the hotel so he had to look at a map. I knew nothing about them finding it until I got back to the hotel later that day. So I guess to them, it was only a car and he was a driver so he could deal with it. Thank God I have a very level headed son!

Freedom 42, i understand how you feel. I had tools stolen from a jobsite last year. the JPD told my brother and I to just file on our insurance and forget about it. They never came back to get serial numbers or anything else. We never got our tools back. I have replaced all of mine now, but it still makes me sick.

Police officers, If you are reading this, please understand that every crime is a big deal or we would not have them on the books. Do not try to be flippant when you deal with victims because it will come back to haunt you. You may be the victim next time and then you will understand how it feels to have your security laughed at.

They wouldn't drop charges if its really stolen. Come on make some sense.

Wonder if anyone offered to pay Timothy for his lost time and incarceration?

All you folks whining about how nobody cares about a car any more and not one of you even considered that a man was detained without good reason. Oh, it was soneone else's mistake....

So along with redusmfan let me say that police officers should be answerable when they do the equivalent of kidnapping someone and keep them locked up on bad charges.
