Results certified: Middleton wins
Published Friday, May 9, 2008
NATCHEZ — It’s official — Jake Middleton has been elected as the Democratic candidate in the mayoral race.
After a full day of paper ballot counting at the Adams County Courthouse Wednesday and a speedy verification process Thursday morning, Middleton received 51.88 percent of the vote to incumbent Mayor Phillip West’s 47.95 percent.
Middleton received 2,719 votes compared to West’s 2,513.
Middleton will now face Independent Chick Graning in the June 3 general election.
Now that paper ballot counting and its verification is complete, absentee voting has begun for the May 20 run-off.
The only run-off is in Ward 5, between Mark Fortenbery, who received 404 votes, and Frances Thompson Bailey, who received 331 votes.
That gave Fortenbery 48.91 percent of the vote, while Bailey received 40.07 percent of the vote.
Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will face Republican Charles Zucarro in the general election.

I wonder what Mayor West will do with his remaining time in office. Does he have time to do anything for the city? Or does an out-going Mayor just start packing at this point?
When does the new mayor actually take office?

It should be interesting to see his attitude during this time as well. Will he be a sore loser or "buckit" up and be cooperative.

Oh I'm sure there is a building or two he can find bulldoze.

mayor west needs to start his transition period today, and the people he brought with him need to look for other jobs hopefully in another state

As I opened my window blinds to allow the Florida sun to permeate the room, I noticed in my neighbor’s yard something so familiar. Nestled between two palm trees was a Magnolia tree. I realized this morning that I hadn’t seen a Magnolia tree in so long. Instantly a feeling of nostalgia took over. I suddenly missed the comfort of home. I needed a quick fix so I logged onto my computer and pulled up the Natchez Democrat.
I must admit that I am somewhat disappointed . As I read the comments posted, it saddens me to see that the there is so much attention focused on race issues. While race is and probably always will be an issue on some level, it should not be the basis of most conversation. Regardless of Mayor West’s race, he has proven to be an effective leader throughout his political career. I have discovered in my adult life that judgemental people have a tendency to judge others based on their actions while only judging themselves by their intentions. If someone’s behavior does not reflect a choice or decision we would have made, we judge it as wrong. We must be careful in how we discuss others.

oh give me a break. Natchez is far better off without Phillip West. He's a jerk. Race doesn't have anythign to do with it.

"natchezsouthside" is soooooo right! and where are these 200 businesses anyway? there's prob not enough vacant commercial buildings, even in Natchez, to house 200 new businesses. he's full of it!
