Take time to explore local treasures
Published Tuesday, May 13, 2008
We’ve often said the Natchez area is an undiscovered jewel. We can’t help it; we’re just in love with the place. It’s home.
From the historic sites and scenic views of the majestic Mississippi River to the awe-inspiring natural resources and even more amazing people who call this place home, our area is truly special.
That’s why visitors from around the globe come here to visit. They come to see the antebellum houses and Natchez Under-the-Hill, to see the historic churches and the downtown shops.
These visitors are most evident during the annual spring and fall pilgrimages. But those visitors are here all the time.
That’s why this week’s events to promote National Tourism Week are so important. The aim of the local weeklong event, “Discovering Natchez Treasures,” is to educate locals on all that our area has to offer visitors.
Events vary each day this week, but all are free and open to the public. For more information and a schedule of the events, head down to the Natchez Visitor Reception Center at Canal Street and John R. Junkin Drive.
You might learn something new about your community and in doing so you’ll become a more informed ambassador for our city the next time a visitor stops and asks you a question or seeks directions to some landmark.
Natchez’s treasures are all around us and this week we expect a few more will be unveiled to the treasure hunters who seek them out.

ND, you need to send a reporter along on all the trips to report what they saw and did. Many of our citizens, for one reason or another, are unable to do the trips, but would love to hear about them.

Apparently people could not spare the time ---- why do the downtown businesses make the effort to work with the CVB if they can't be bothered to come to the businesses they ask to participate. They tell us to do this and provide food and refreshments and give us "passport stamps" yet no one comes.
I will see if things change in the last couple of hours!

37 downtown businesses bought food and refreshments for this -
total number of people who visited for this event - 0.
Of course the paper gave no details of the events or times.

Today was an event downtown, businesses bought food and refreshments and no one came? Is that for real?
I wish I'd known, I could have taken the family out for dinner. Shucks, when's the next event with food and refreshment?

natchez1, I was told that today's "event" was a total flop and no one showed up. Very sad. Its a shame the business owners were asked to put up money (refreshments) for a bunch of no-shows. Maybe we will find out who was responsible.

OldGrandDad,
The blame goes to the Chamber of Commerce and the CVB.
I have been unimpressed with the new head of the chamber.
Carrie did her part, but everyone else dropped the ball!
Today was a total waste of my time and money.

hidden jewels in Natchez are you serious!! lol i mean thats why a lot of folks moving and have moved away from natchez never to return because instead of trying to keep it valued citizens and planning for the future natchez continues to be historic.. no CAREERS just low paying jobs. natchez is just a retirement community nothing more nothing less...

i am sorry i couldn't attend any of the events but some of us in town do have to work. as far as exploring the jewels of the area, my wife and i get out every weekend that we can to explore the area. one unfortunate aspect though is on sundays hardly anything is open downtown. we do repeat business to the businesses open downtown when we can. natchez does have a lot of potential and it does have a lot to offer but so many of the locals are so down on it instead of trying to fix it.

rebel4ever, you are correct.
I often wonder about all these people who complain about Natchez and somehow blame our tourism industry and our historic status for the fact that they or their children or their friends have "low paying" or "no" jobs.
Most Natchezians I know who support preservation of historic Natchez also have careers, own businesses and create jobs for others. They also make sacrifices so that their children can get the best education available.
I wonder if those who complain so loudly have considered becoming entrepreneurs themselves? Bearing a little of risk themselves? Opening a business? Hiring others? Etc.
Instead, they just complain and bad mouth those who do and wait for someone to come along and offer them a better job -- something with more pay, little risk and low performance requirements.
