UPDATE: Alcohol involved in accident

Published Sunday, May 18, 2008

VIDALIA — Vidalia Police are sure alcohol was a factor in the early Sunday morning car accident on the Mississippi River bridge.

Captain Arthur Lewis said one person has been arrested for DWI and more charges are pending.

The accident killed one and sent several others to the hospital.

Police are not releasing names of those involved because all family members have not been notified.

Lewis said the accident involved at least four cars and an unknown number of people. Passengers in the vehicles who apparently fled the scene at the time of the accident have trickled into the Vidalia Police Department all day long, Lewis said.

The accident is under investigation and Lewis said more information would be available Monday morning.

Most involved were Concordia Parish residents, he said.

Cedric A. Hunter, 24, of Natchez was charged with DWI, first offense.

WAIT!!!! ND crime reports say this Cedrick A Hunter was released on $696.00 bond. Well was he or wasn't he???? Did they go back and pick him up after he posted bond???? Is he in jail now or out????

Posted by jfinley (Julie Finley) on May 18, 2008 at 9:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You are right. We've changed the story, thanks for pointing this out.

Hunter is listed with no bond at VPD currently. The CPSO is reporting differently. Inmates are often transferred from VPD to CPSO where a bond can be set.

Thanks

Multiple people fleeing the scene? That's always a bad sign.

Posted by lilredhead (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 9:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ProNatchez you are right! That means that witnesses are out there and may not be talking. I can't imagine why thy would flee the scene if they were not involved in creating the accident. They must have some reason to run though. Makes you wonder what in the world it could have been. Maybe they can redeem themselves by coming forward to be helpful in the investigation.

If Cedrick was arrested & released on Saturday and the accident happened on Sunday morning. Whats going on?? Was he drunk when he was released and caused this accident? Was that not the Saturday arrest report?

Posted by lilredhead (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 9:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

bayougranny---- It was on the Sunday report. I had to read it twice myself especially when I read in the earlier release of this story (before it was corrected, Thanks Julie!) that said he had been released on bond.

Sorry, I went back to look it said Sunday arrest report. My error.

Why didnt the democrat rush and put this victim's name in the paper like they did the child who died on the 4 wheeler?

Posted by froggie (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 10:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Obviously the family of the 4 wheeler crash victim allowed them to do so. They must not have had the official permission to release this victim's name. Unfortunately, there are people who complain that names aren't released fast enough and those who complain when they do release the name and details. There's no way everyone will be satisfied. We should all give the Democrat a break and understand that they will release facts when they recieve and confirm them.

My problem is that Cedric's police report of DWI (which I'm assuming is stemming from this accident) was reported in Sunday's paper, BUT there was no mention of this horrific accident until this afternoon. What a shame!

I knew Terrance well...I teach at HHS and was very fond and proud of him. A very good kid and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My prayers go out to his family and everyone else who is suffering during this terrible tragedy.

ok this was from the other update.........Terrance Johnson aged 19 was killed along with 2 others that were with him. They were all where under the age of 20, the 3 killed were all from Ferriday. She also said some guys in another vehicle were going down the wrong side of the bride and that's what caused the wreck. Now
Cedric A. Hunter, 24, of Natchez was charged with DWI, first offense. What about vehicle homicide and where are all these witness coming from? Were they hurt in the wreck also? And what about the part where they said the driver of the car got away?? This really needs to be a WHOLE NEW STORY FROM THE START.....

I wish we could learn to concentrate on perfecting ourselves instead of wasting a lot of energy telling others how to perfect themselves. It just won't work, <<<notknown>>>. Try telling someone how to be perfect so YOUR world spins better!

CEDRIC SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN DRIVING AT ALL. EVERY AUTOMOBILE HIS PARENTS HAVE HE'S WRECKED THEM ALL. I'VE TOLD
HIS MOM SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT HIS DRIVING.SHE'S ALWAYS LAUGHED IT OFF.

Gossip is spreading so fast & everyone is telling something different. The only thing we know for certain is there was one killed. I'm not putting too much into anyones story until all the reports are released.

Actually Cedric didn't cause the accident. Two white boys were racing on the bridge so intoxication didn't have nothing to do with it.Yau'll people need to stop tryna knock people cuz he was actually trying to help somebody.Yau'll need to get a life and comment on your own self and life.

Posted by doubled (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 11:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

white or black isn't impotant!!! he shouldn't been drinking and driving!!!!!!!

Posted by oldschool (anonymous) on May 18, 2008 at 11:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My question is from the last comment.....Two white boys racing and driving the wrong way on the bridge? Or going towards Natchez? Did one of them Drive a white Ford Mustang? just asking I was told by somebody that a White ford mustang was going the wrong way on the the other bridge about 3:30am? Don't know if that was related or not? or how reliable that comment was. I just hate it had to come to this.

I am glad I am moving into my apartment here in Hattiesburg tomorrow, but afraid because my mom still lives in that area.

I know accidents happen everywhere, but I will NEVER raise my child in a town like Natchez, where drinking is encouraged as the ONLY funthing there is to do (despite all of the things different places plan); and where kids do stupid crap like this just to get their jollies off.

It is scary and I'd suggest anyone with young, still pliable children, or those who are thinking about having children, MOVE AWAY and do not raise your kids there.....

Posted by srob (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 12:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)

yeah, toosweet, that seems a bit farfetched....if i am wrong, then the truth will come out, but i seriously doubt that is what happened...

Posted by toosweet (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 12:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What seems to has happened is that the person that caused the accident, who was driving a gray mustang, was traveling on the wrong bridge because he was trying to escape someone who was driving a red mustang that was chasing and shooting at him. Once the gray mustang crashed into the passengers he fled the scene and the driver of the red mustang turned around in Vidalia and sped back across the bridge to Natchez.

Posted by srob (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 12:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

first off, i took photos of the vehicles as i was crossing to Natchez across the old bridge, and the damage that was done to those vehicles, it seems very unlikely that the grey mustang would have been able to drive away from this

Posted by srob (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 12:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)

plus an "informant" in the form of a police officer was heard saying that the kids were playing chicken. a very reliable source, might i add.

Posted by toosweet (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 12:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Trust me srob this is real close to the truth. I got this from a witness that definitely passed these two mustangs right before the crash. They were going to Natchez and passed these two mustangs and they heard the crash and turned around when they got back on the Natchez bound bridge to see what had happened the Red Mustang sped back by them doing about 80.

The point is it is just very sad no matter what happened or who done it, people are dead and others are injured and well all i got to say is it is very sad even when you don't know them your heart just goes out for them and their loved ones. God bless all involved

The driver of the gray mustang was nowhere to be found at that time. The police kept asking "where is the driver of the gray mustang"

This is to srob. I live in the Lafayette, La. area. We have had several major accidents in the last few years with as many as four people killed by a drunk driver. Street racing is suspected in the wreck that the four perished. And there are plenty of things in this area for kids to do. So, lack of anything to do is not a major cause of drinking and driving drunk. It doesn't make any difference where you move, this is a problem that you will have to face. As to the solution, stiffer penalties for driving drunk, better law enforcement to stop people from driving drunk, people being responsible for their own actions.... in other words taking it upon themselves not to drive drunk are just a few examples of ways to curb this problem. Parents need to set better examples for their children. If their kids see the parents drinking and driving, it is likely the kids will do the same. I am not saying this is true in all cases, just that it will be most likely. It is very sad that this had to happen and my prayers are with the families involved.

toosweet that just what my friend said her and her friends was headed towards the red mustang and she was able to get over but it wasnt wreck. What I cant figure how he got back across threw those other wreck cars. The vpd shouldnt have a hard time finding out who was driving the gray car if its registered i would lock up any one at that address owner or whoever someone would talk then. Those poor kids was just beginning ther lives. Everyone whose out at dawn doesnt have to be up to no good. Some people know how to to have a good time without causing trouble. It could have happen to someone heading to work. I hope the polices hurry and do something cause a lesson need to be taught to these drunk drivers. This is horrible.

Posted by froggie (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 10:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Realtalk, I hadn't though about that. How did he drive through those wrecked cars? That's odd. If he did drive back through them and kept going - that is really bad. It's bad enough that he may have caused the wreck and not known it because it happened behind him, but if he turned around and drove right through it, I feel for him. I say "him", but it may have been a female - I don't know. Either way, I hope they are caught. I'm still curious how many people were involved in this thing.

It is a sad thing that someone has died, even worse when they are young. Children do some stupid things, we all have and most survive.
What should be done is that parents take on more of he responsibility when their children do stupid things. Don't wait until they kill someone. The main thing some parents do is try to hide the fact that the child has done some wrong thing.
It probably would make a big difference if the parents were held accountable for their underage childrens actions.

I know all of the boys that were in this incident. I love them all especially Terrence "Stunt Dog" Johnson. He was a very sweet young man that will do anything for anybody. He loved music becuase me & a couple of other people have recorded together. He was very talented & I loved him more than a friend or brother. He was my round & now he gone. Well he always said he wish he could see his mother again & now I hope they're together living eternal life together as they were once before.

Love you always Nuke!!!!!

Froggie, when the driver of the red mustang turned around he only passed the first accident, which he indirectly caused, that killed those boys, the other accidents hadn't happened yet. Another thing, the first accident was wasn't blocking traffic. When others came speeding across the bridge to Natchez they were just going to fast to stop and caused a chain reaction with other cars. Everyone was rear ending each other.

first off, i use to be a youngster that dranked and would drive many miles back to natchez but i always tell people that God was looking out for me.i finally grew up about 14yrs ago after an accident almost took my life.no,i wasn't drunk but speed and a damp road played a big part.my accident was nearly a head on collision and i almost didnt get to see my baby girl.all my homeboys thought i was drunk and i thank God that i wasnt because if i was i may have been locked up in the louisiana state pen.we are losing our kids to senseless violence and alcohol.we need help so that we can help our kids.

Posted by danativeson (anonymous) on May 19, 2008 at 10:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

we need a solution to this problem so we want lose anymore of our kids to this senseless thing called having F U N.summer isnt even here and we have already lost 3young men in accidents.the first on a 4 wheeler and now these 2 in an alcohol related accident.PARENTS-alcohol,cars,clubs,latenights and speed they just dont mix.we need STRICK REGULATIONS to be enforced on clubs, drinking and driving and late nights.or i am afraid that we may lose plenty more this summer.we need to take our kids back from the streets, the clubs, the alcohol etc...PARENTS-ITS TIME WE TAKE A STAND FOR WHAT IS RIGHT AND FIGHT FOR OUR CHILDRENS LIFE.STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING.LETS DO IT AS ONE COMMUNITY AND MOST OF ALL WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE.

I'm very sorry to read about this bad wreck. It's so sad really for all the families. To my knowledge, I didn't know anyone involved, but sometimes, I just wonder if people aren't being weeded out; like it says in the bible, two will be taken and one left...something like that.

But, you really can't blame the way grown kids behave on their parents. I've known kids whose parents were very strict, weren't divorced, and some of them had dads who were preachers, or law enforcement officers, and their mothers were teachers or lawyers, but when those kids got away from the house, they went wild. They knew that their dads would beat their rear-ends if they ever got caught, but that made the things that they were doing even more exciting to them. Some of those kids eventually straightened out and became teachers, preachers, or law enforcement officers. It's hard to tell how a child is gonna turn out.

And underage drinking, driving, and racing has been going on in the Natchez, Vidalia, and Ferriday area at least since I was a youngun. I think it would be safe to say that it started way before my first memory. I can't recall anyone ever going the wrong way on the bridge, but that doesn't mean it hasn't ever happened before.

I always say a prayer for my family members, out at night, or away from home, and place each of them in God's hands and ask him to surround them with his holy angels to protect them and guide them safely home.

Why does Butch Brown not know what the MDOT workers were doing on the bridge?

Why does the Natchez Democrat devote two paragraphs to Butch Brown saying he doesn't know why they were there.

How hard would it be for Brown to find out why they were there and then the Democrat could have reported information instead of "we don't know."

Anyway, an all round horrible, sad tragedy.

If the red car had crashed & wasn't blocking traffic. Why didn't they stop to offer help. That alone is leaving the scene of an accident. If this is true they were too afraid to stop, because they knew they were involved.
When everything is completely released we will see what really happened & I'm sure we'll all be in for some surprises.
That is is the actual facts are ever released.

um guys, this isn't CSI. it doesn't take less than a week to solve a crime/incident like on TV. This could take months, even years, considering there are likely people coming forward who werent even there, trying to "help" or telling stories they've heard, or just making up stuff to be in the limelight. you have to realize that this is going to take longer, and even then, we may NEVER know what happened. just because there is an investigation doesn't mean it will ever be solved. there will be many theories, but no one knows what happened except those involved, and the key bits of info may have only been held by those who have passed because of this. don't be so impatient, and give the cops the time they need to solve a case. would you prefer they jump to conclusions and blame the wrong people? i wouldn't! these things take time, people, and they are not required to tell ANYONE ANYTHING until they feel like it. we are lucky we have been told all that we have.

you seem to know so much why didn't the red car stop when he indirectly caused it? You and several other people are getting in so deep & your stories are beginning to not match up. If the red car had stopped he may have been able to help the dying victims but no he runs like a coward then causes another accident. I hope whoever this person in the red Mustang is has nightmares the rest of his life.
The motto is Drivers don't let friends drive drunk, but in this case it seems everyone was drunk.
Everyone involved are loosers.
