First responders help direct traffic after an two-car accident on U.S. 84 Monday afternoon.

Wreck delays highway traffic on 84

Published Tuesday, May 20, 2008

VIDALIA — A two-vehicle accident on U.S. 84 left a vehicle overturned, delayed traffic and resulted in minor injuries Monday afternoon.

The accident, which occurred at 1:34 p.m., involved a black 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old from Vidalia and the silver 2003 GMC Envoy driven by Tammy Lynn Denny, 36, of Jonesville, Louisiana State Police Troop “E” Public Information Officer Scott Moreau said.

Four people received minor injuries, Concordia Fire District No. 2 officials said. Several small children were removed from the scene, but did not appear seriously harmed.

Witnesses on the scene said Denny made a defensive move to avoid a black pickup truck that had pulled too far out of the median and into the roadway.

Witness John Cox, of Vidalia, was waiting in line at Concordia Metal when the wreck occurred.

“The truck was sticking out in the highway just a little bit, and she (the driver of the SUV) tried to dodge him,” Cox said. “She knicked the front bumper just a little, and that sent her curving across the highway. That was what made her lose control and turn over.”

State police reports did not note if the juvenile was cited, and Denny was not cited or arrested, Moreau said.

the state troopers need to do something about all of those scrap iron trailers parked on the side of hwy 84 trying to get into concordia metals.this lady was lucky..but the next person might not be.

Okay, I am so glad this one has no fatalities. At what age or time after the driver's exam is taken, are teens allowed or newly liscensed drivers allowed to be in the car alone, without another experienced liscense driver? This kid's truck was hanging out in the median, impeding oncoming traffic. Accidents can happen to anyone, I was just curious with summer coming up and the kids getting out of school.

Maybe the sheriff dept. need to beef up traffic patrol for the entire summer. Also, city law enforcement need to stop giving a slap on the wrist to your friends and their kids and enforce the law equally.

Maybe Ferriday P.D. had something right after-all,hmmmmm

shedevil what are they suppose to do about people going to sell scrap iron? It is not illegal they are parking where they have room. They do have patrol there alot of the times...People are hitting on hard times now they doing what they can to make a dollar. So they can buy gas and a few groceries.....

When any part of a vehicle is sticking into the roadway, they are not parked properly, but I understand that they were in the median. There also, they should be fully in their lane.

How many of the haulers have the right to sell what they are bringing to the scrap yard? How many went onto private property and took the stuff without permission. One of my neighbors recently had his box blade for his tractor taken. We do not know if someone stole it to use it or to sell for scrap. Doing what you can to make a dollar does not justify stealing.

This could've happened anywhere. Yesterday when I was headed from Ferriday to Natchez there was a woman in the road too far and I too had to do the same thing as this lady. Luckily for me I moved to the other lane and no one was coming. This lady was trying to turn around and it was not even a turn lane, the turn lane was on the other side of the highway. This happens all the time. Don't blame Concordia Metals or the people selling their scrap iron.

Oh and I heard the other day that the prices for tin is going WAY up too and that getting a tin roof put on your house will be OUTRAGEOUSLY priced!

People need to learn how to drive or else stay home.
My son had a wreck in the same spot a while back
because some moronic woman decided to leave the
back end of her truck in the road and he could not avoid hitting it.It's peole like that and the people drinking and acting like fools on the bridge that make it unsafe for my children to be on the highway. It just makes me so angry to hear things like that.Get a clue people learn to drive or stay off the roads.

Just because it happens all the time, doesn't mean it should. This is wrong and I personally can't stand people who have these huge vehicles, but can't drive them. He was an inexperienced driver and probably was not even aware he was hanging out of the "median." That lady who you refer to should have been ticketed if caught, for one, for making an illegal turn. Experienced, alert drivers such as yourself, have to compensate for the others. I am afraid that had another car been coming in the other lane, you would too would have had no other choice but to either brake hard or swerve hard enough to avoid her, and wind up in an accident yourself.

frogprincenessntz you ae right if it is stolen but you know there is a chance there is some honest people over there selling stuff.. Ever think of that??? Not everyone is a thief....The man who WITNESSED the wreck was waiting to get into the can man or whatever it is called....

That's right firered.....

The law doesn't require anyone to be in the vehicle with you once you have gotten your drivers lic....

Exactly... It drives me insane when people can't drive...

Has anyone that has driven on Hwy. 84 ever notice how many idiots drive in the left lane with no intention of trying to pass a vehicle or turn? Left lanes are not supposed to be driven in unless you are a faster moving vehicle or unless you are turning! But do most people drive like that?....nooooo! That causes more wrecks on that highway than you can imagine.

Has anyone heard anything about the boy hurt in wreck on back road in Vidalia? His name is Dillon Sontoya. I heard he's in Jackson, but no update lately. Paper doesn't say anything about it. Just Wondering. Thanks!

well that is not the way the wreck happened. I know this because i was in the accident. We were driving on the four lane headed to natchez, the boy was shooting out across our two lanes when we went into the left lane to try to keep from hitting him, he continues to keep on going. He hit my door which i was on the rear passenger side. ( I did not know where he hit us until the state trooper told me he hit my door. That explains why i could not get it to even crack open so that the responders could get in to us.) That caused us to go into a spin into the oncoming four lane, which only thanks to God there was no one coming at that time that hit us. As we spun into the median we rolled over on the side, and slid cross ways back into our four lane. So the rumor mill can stop. This is straight from the horses mouth. That is why the guy got a ticket for failure to yield, but that is beside the point right now. The point is God had has hands on us, that we were not hurt any worse than we are.

la9967, I sincerely wasn't referring to you in my statement above, I was merely pointing out the fact that so many folks on that highway (or any other in La. and Ms. as far as thats concerned)DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE or traffic regulations. In Florida, one best not be driving in the left lane unless turning or passing. Hwy. 84 is a haven for bad drivers (such as the one you encountered).
