Remember veterans every day

Published Monday, May 26, 2008

As we return to our normal routines of work and play this week after what for many was a three-day weekend, let’s pause for a minute to remember the purpose of Monday’s holiday.

Memorial Day is a day America sets aside to honor the memory of those who have died in our nation’s service.

And from downtown streets to the simple, proud markers at the Natchez National Cemetery, the Miss-Lou had its colors out in honor of the special day.

The Natchez area is filled with a rich history of residents who have served in America’s great military conflicts.

In fact, the Natchez City Cemetery is the final resting place of veterans from every major war American has seen in its history.

And on Memorial Day we honor their memory.

But the indebtedness we owe to those who have served to preserve and protect our freedom cannot be repaid in a single day.

We should remember their sacrifice — and the sacrifices of those who loved them, too — each and every day.

The men and women in uniform who have given the ultimate sacrifice truly represent the spirit of freedom, bravery and independence that makes our country so great.

I sure do honor our servicemen/women every day of my life! This wasn't an option in our household..it was a commandment.
