Obama makes history

Published Wednesday, November 5, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama was elected the nation’s first black president Tuesday night in a historic triumph that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.

The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his victory by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Iowa.

A huge crowd in Grant Park in Chicago erupted in jubilation at the news of Obama’s victory. Some wept.

McCain called his former rival to concede defeat — and the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House. ‘‘The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly,’’ McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona.

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, will take their oaths of office as president and vice president on Jan. 20, 2009.

As the 44th president, Obama will move into the Oval Office as leader of a country that is almost certainly in recession, and fighting two long wars, one in Iraq, the other in Afghanistan.

The popular vote was close, but not the count in the Electoral College, where it mattered most.

There, Obama’s audacious decision to contest McCain in states that hadn’t gone Democratic in years paid rich dividends.

Obama has said his first order of presidential business will be to tackle the economy. He has also pledged to withdraw most U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months.

Fellow Democrats rode his coattails to larger majorities in both houses of Congress. They defeated incumbent Republicans and won open seats by turn.

The 47-year-old Illinois senator was little known just four years ago. A widely praised speech at the Democratic National Convention, delivered when he was merely a candidate for the Senate, changed that.

Overnight he became a sought-after surrogate campaigner, and he had scarcely settled into his Senate seat when he began preparing for his run for the White House.

A survey of voters leaving polling places on Tuesday showed the economy was by far the top Election Day issue. Six in 10 voters said so, and none of the other top issues — energy, Iraq, terrorism and health care — was picked by more than one in 10.

‘‘May God bless whoever wins tonight,’’ President Bush told dinner guests at the White House, where his tenure runs out on Jan. 20.

The Democratic leaders of Congress celebrated in Washington.

‘‘It is not a mandate for a party or ideology but a mandate for change,’’ said Senate Majority leader Harry reid of Nevada.

Said Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, ‘‘Tonight the American people have called for a new direction. They have called for change in America.’’

WE WON!!!!!!!! YES, WE DID!!!!!!!

The American people have spoken and voted in, to the highest office, the better man -- BARACK OBAMA! We knew we would prevail -- it was a long, hard fight. Now, we need to throw ALL our support behind him and his administration to help them dig us out of the mess we're in. The road ahead will be long and hard, too. But, we can bring about the change our country needs . . . YES, WE CAN!!!!!!

This victory is for all the people who lost their lives on the Pettis Bridge and who shed blood, sweat and tears all over America to get the right to vote. This victory was for you.

This victory was for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who had a dream that had been deferred far too long. We've finally reached the mountain top. Even though he did not get there with us, I feel he was looking down, proudly, at all the different faces supporting and cheering for Barack Obama. We got here on Dr. King's shoulders and those of many other Blacks, Whites and Jews who put their lives on the line fighting for equality and the right to show that we are just like YOU, the ruling class. WHAT A JOURNEY.

BARACK OBAMA . . . President for and of ALL the people!!!!!

I don't think Martin Luther King would be too happy about a black man backed by Wall St. and the defense establishment being elected president. That is not what King's message was about. King wanted equal opportunity, not equal lack of opportunity.

So let me understand what's being said about Obama, I mean President Obama;

He's a Muslim.

He's a socialist.

He's the antichrist.

He's a supporter of terrorism.

And NOW on the very night that Obama is elected as the next President, EnKiKur has discovered that President Obama in into genocide like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Edi Amin and Milosovitch. DAMN!!! Be sure to pass this information on to Fox News and watch them run with it will ya'. Maybe you can get him impeached for crimes against humanity.

Go PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!

((EnkiKur)) I know McCain was your man. However, it's over . . . he did not win. Barack Obama is President-elect of the United States of America and will be sworn into the highest office of the land on January 20, 2009. Please direct your energy, research and intelligence in a more positive way -- look for some good, for a change.

Don't look at it as a defeat but an opportunity to create a better America. As Americans, we need to show the world that we are united. He will reach across the Party line to Republicans to get our country back on track. Let's reach over, in small-town America, and do the same.

In the next couple of days, Obama will begin to transition. Let's wait and see who he names. He will be facing a tremendous challenge but together we will bring about positive change. YES, WE WILL!!!! Get on board.

Sure he is Punisher. He is an abortion rights advocate, which has been promoted by Family Planning, which used to be the Eugenics Records Office. Family Planning was started by Margaret Sanger, who also started something called The Negro Project to carry out family planning in the black population. She was aided by W. E. B. Dubois, a man Obama claims is one of his greatest inspirations.

"The minister's work is also important and he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members"- Margaret Sanger

Of black churches, Dubois said in relation to the work of the Negro Project " “intelligent propaganda of any sort, and the American Birth Control League and other agencies ought to get their speakers before church congregations and their arguments in the Negro newspapers", Dubois also held the “mass of ignorant Negroes” who bred “carelessly and disastrously so that the increase among [them] ... is from that part of the population least intelligent and fit, and least able to rear their children properly.”

So there, Punisher, learn a little about your history and the truth behind the black Marxist intelligentsia and their black opponents back in the twenties and thirties of the last century.

McCain was not my man, and I will not ever join an America united to promote Marxist ideology for the masses under the rule of an aristocratic elite. You may wish to live without understanding the forces around you, and to lead your brethren in continued servitude to a system designed to take their labor and dignity, and you may be fooled by a black man making that Marxist appeal, but I will not.

No ones going to take your guns from you snake! I have guns too! How can this be done? A clandestine operation to raid the homes of legal gun owners to start nationwide at the same time? Not enough cops on the local, state, and federal level. The military is in Iraq and Afghanistan. Taking guns away from legalized citizens would cause a civil war in this country, everyone knows that.

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 2:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Not bs Punisher, simple history. I don't expect you to believe me, a white man, but how about some black people who've read history? Here: http://www.blackgenocide.org/negro.html

And as far as Obama being a socialist, he is. He suckled at the breast of a Marxist, who was herself the daughter of Marxists. That makes him third generation. You, like most Americans, don't understand Marxism very well, or you would hear it in his speeches.

Since I see you are fairly intelligent, I would like to make you aware of a www.blackcommentator.com This is one of the premier sites for intelligent black people on the web. And, you can also read this http://www.blackcommentator.com/129/129_... which is an article which explains why the opening premise in this article that racial barriers in American are as old as America itself is a fraudulent claim, in the words of intelligent black men. The author of the Article is Jonathon Scott, a black professor in the New York University system who is a Marxist (if you don't believe me, email him, he is very nice and will explain to you what a Marxist is).

Marxists aren't all bad, they are just mostly naive. Sooner or later the Democratic Party is going to have to come out of the closet on this socialism issue.

The truth is Punisher, blacks can't declare a victory of parity until there is a black owned central bank of issue making loans to some large government. It will be a long time until that happens because that is where the real power lies, and so far that power has been closely held in the hands of an Anglo-Jewish alliance that has a vise grip on the money supply of the world. Until there is black ownership of a central bank blacks are still in the anterooms to power.

"I don't expect you to believe me, a white man."

Just setting the record straight.

Ok i gotta do this. Obama is 50/50 white and black. Since there is more whites than blacks in this country if we start calling him white will that no longer make him black since majority rules? Thus he would no longer be the first black president right? j/k folks laugh at this dont get mad.

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 3:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, thank you for that. Because there is more here than meets the eye and clear vision is needed for discerning what that thing is.

You really should read Scott's article. It is just as he explains in there through references to the work of Dubois and Theodore Allen: the struggle of the American working class has only been disguised as a race struggle, it is really a class struggle. (That's Marxist talk, but I agree. I would take a different approach to solving the problems Marxists want to solve, but see the same problems).

"So what is America's real “Peculiar Institution”? For James, in conformity with U.S. historiography and “white” common sense, it’s racial slavery: chattel slavery imposed exclusively on African Americans. Yet what’s so peculiar about capitalists in pursuit of present profit? Under this logic, sweatshop labor is peculiar too, as is making workers pay for their own raises. Moreover, was it also “peculiar” that the English imposed slavery on the Catholic Irish in Ireland?

Rather, isn’t the peculiarity of U.S. history and society that the masses of European American bond-laborers were not kept in a condition of lifetime bond-servitude? Why not? Why would a capitalist let a worker up from a condition of servitude if it didn’t serve his particular class interest to do so? What was this particular class interest all about?

In James’s version of American slavery, these illuminating questions never arise because, for him and PBS, racial slavery and white racism are part of nature – a sorrowful destiny that cannot be changed. For if it wasn’t for specific class reasons that the slave-owning tobacco planters let poor European Americans out of slavery – i.e. to divide and demoralize a rebellious multi-ethnic working class by producing from within it an oppressing social control group, the “white race” – then it must be that they did it because they “naturally” hated blacks and “naturally” liked whites. The rest is history, because there’s no other conclusion to draw."- Jonathan Scott, 'Eradicating Bacon's Rebellion From Popular Memory'

Posted by EnKiKur (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 4:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

A different black perspective on an Obama presidency:

"If the masses of people in this nation knew or had known the pertinent facts pertaining to the war mongering “we can fight the war better,” pro-apartheid Zionist, corporate Wall Street-backed, slippery tongued Barack Obama, it is doubtful they would have been so thoroughly bamboozled and hoodwinked to their own detriment and that of the world. Wall Street and the corporate media, however, have, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, engaged in a relentless, ruthless, and absolutely unprecedented campaign of corporate branding and marketing on behalf of Barack Obama, with the peoples of the United States as their targets.

....Those so-called leftist and progressives who were and are collaborators with U.S. Empire will, for a time, try to pretend that their support of Barack Obama was not a sell out, and that they simply need more time to persuade the U.S. Empire’s colored corporate emperor to do the right thing. Meanwhile, Black, Brown, Red, Yellow, and White peoples will be enduring an unprecedented rate of economic and social suffering. The anger of the people will ultimately peak and explode, as a result of having bought into false hope and raised expectations. This is precisely why the U.S. corporate government has already made military contingency plans to contain and massively quash dissention within the United States."- Larry Pinkney, Black Panther Party, former Minister of Interior of the Republic of New Africa: http://www.blackcommentator.com/297/297_...

The shame of this is that while it is nice to think the country has progressed to the point that a black man can become president, indicating some improvement in affairs since the division arising from Bacon's Rebellion, it is undeniable that this black man is a media and corporate creation chosen to carry on "more of the same" as Pinkney posits in the title of his article above. My fear is that disillusionment over what is to come will set the country back decades in terms of race relations when it becomes apparent what Obama's real allegiance is to. Biden, Powell, and Albright have already warned those of us who could hear it that this will be an unpopular presidency, the only question is how unpopular it will be.

Obama won, AMERICA LOST!!!!!!

Posted by ozzette (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 6:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I am not happy that he won, I personally don't like that his campaign has used race. Everywhere, it's his race that is mentioned first. Who cares if he is black? Did anyone care that McCain was white? If McCain had won, would the ND headline read this morning "The nation's 44th WHITE President"?

Nope.

It's a fact proven last night, thousands of people voted for Obama, strictly for his race. The media has accomplished what it set out to do. There were 12 Presidential candidates in all, but the one only ones you ever heard about were McCain and Obama.

Well, the race is over, he has won. So, it's time for everyone to pull together and hope that the next 4 years are good ones. Maybe he'll do a good job, I don't know. But either way, I'm glad it's over, because frankly I'm sick of hearing about his heritage. Who knows...maybe next election the ND headline will read "The Nations first woman President." OH OH OH! Or maybe " The Nation's first Latino President"...

No? How about "The Nation's first gay President."

Now that would be historical.

Or was hysterical? Either way the man won because he is black, not because he is qualified. Now lets just hope he gets spectacular on the job training. :)

With this turnout, its a major victory for democracy, the most American of values. America is whatever the voters decide they want it to be, don't listen to people who drag you back to narrow definitions of the past.

Believe what you want to believe, the people have spoken, and we have our multiracial President.

Welcome to the 21st century. Now, there is a lot of work to do and problems to be solved.

Congratulations America and President Obama!!!

It is a sad day in America. Obama won becaue of the color of his skin. And people who say he didn't are deluded. When he receives over 90+% of the Black vote, there is only ONE conclusion. He received those votes because to the color of his skin.

Before people start yelling...I would have been equally disappointed if McCain had garned 90+% of the white vote.

Glad to see that racism is still alive in the country.

This should have been about the issues...not race.

I'm just speechless. I didn't sleep well thinking how the majority of voters have been deceived. I will say I was impressed with McCain's bittersweet message to America after the election. He asked us to support Obama, our new president. I'll respect his title but have trouble respecting a man who's affiliates are questionable. The icing will melt off the cake when his true intentions are made known. Of course he'll do it over time, probably so the average Joe can't tell the difference until it's too late.

I still love my America yet have doubts about its democratic longevity.

Yes, Obama is a GREAT choice for this country. As mentioned in the last debate...

"How will you deal with energy independence?"
Obama: "I'll deal with it, I will THINK about how to use energy and EXPLORE how to get more energy."

"What will you do to reform social security?"
Obama: "I don't know that we will have time to get to that with everything else that is happening."

"How will you deal with Russia?"
Obama: "For the most part, I agree with Senator McCain."

"What will you do about the government in Iraq?"
Obama: "I will talk with the government in Iraq."

So, with all of that said, no we did NOT pick the President with the experience to run this country. How dare Senator McCain mention things so far out of our memory such as Teddy Roosevelt, Tip O'Neill, and Ronald Reagan.

Good thing we voted him in as the first African American President because that will be ALL he is remembered for!!!

Why do we always make things about race? Why can't all of you who voted for Barack Obama have done some actual listening in the debates or research on your candidate? He is NOT the most qualified for the job. The ONLY reason he is President-elect is because ya'll wanted to make a "statement".

Redusmfan, I thought you were a prejudiced, racist bigot. Now I KNOW you are one. Truth of the matter is, white folks eat chitlins, watermelon and fried chicken so stop being so sore. We told you McCain was not going to win this one. His party rejected him when he tried his run against G "Dub." Honey, get a life, McCain lost and there are several reasons why, not just one and George Bush casting his vote for him, surely didn't help an already sunken ship.

Thumbs up to SNL for exposing Sarah Palin and actually revealing how UNFIT of a VP she would be. Tina Fey is a true talent who did a lot to expose the air headedness of Palin and all the while Palin, too dense to realize this, thought they were laughing with her not at her.

Regardless on who the President of the United States is on this morning, God IS still in control. It will behoove us all as Americans to get on board and make this country better! Make this country compete fiercely again in the world's eye. Keep this country safe so that our children and grandchildren can carry on.

My kids are in good schools. My country made me proud the last 4 years, even when we had small problems at home.

So, I do not feel like you do . I was happy with status quo. But I will survive the next 4 years, regardless of the person in the white house.

My problem with this election is not that Obama is 50% white and 50% black. My problem is that he has a problem putting his hand over his heart for the NATIONAL ANTHEM, he was going to church with a minister who was preaching hatred until it was found out and then he stopped going. This tells me there is a fundamental problem with his morals and that is not who i want to support, i don't care what color he is. My other problem is that all these black people who never vote all of a sudden they are all getting out to vote. Not because he might be the best candidate but because he is BLACK. Where have they been all these other years when election time came around. I saw people at my polling place that looked like they had been dragged in by the cat, the way they were dressed and acting.

I didn't vote race at all. I voted principals. Like I said earlier I am ashamed of America. We were a country founded on freedon of religion. But as it turns out the race issue is still being played. You are beating a dead horse.

With this man being raised muslin I would be very careful of what beliefs he brings to the hill, if any.

I bet I couldn't find anyone to give my citizenship to at this time.

fire 39212------Read your statement!! Will personally refer it on to the FBI-Secret Service. No need to thank me, happy to do it. Hope they enjoy it too!!!! Since there was not enough Blacks, Asians, Jewish, Hispanic, Indian and "other" votes alone to elect him by the margain he received, one is left to beleive even the FOX news media that stated "the HIGHER educated whites and younger college age whites" voted in masses for him. While you're waiting for a contact from, or the realization that the above listed "boys" will develop an "interest" in your statement, take time to read Judges ch. 5 or Romans ch. 8, 28-39. GOD BLESS!!!!

African americans should NEVER be allowed to pull the race card again on equality and not have the same opportunities as a white man/woman with a black man as president!

Well, I DO work, that's for sure and stop lying. You're not kidding around. Those mean things you said were heart felt from you my friend with a sting of nastiness and you WEREN'T kidding around. Why "kid" around making statements like "chitlins?" Last I checked hun, blacks certainly weren't the only ones who eat them.

Why don't you try going to work instead of leaving ignorant comments on this site. GOBama won, get over it and get over yourself. Step up and help make this country great again. I teach and yes, I do preach as well, so how about that!

Let me tell you what I did for "humor." I turned on the TV and for the FIRST time since this election, I watched FOXNEWS and boy, it was a site to see the pitiful faces there. Now that was comedy!

As a matter of fact, I have had members of my family who have fought for America's freedom in EVERY war except this last one. I have had family that gave their lives for this country. And I hate to see people just give it away.

If it walks like muslim and talks like muslim then you can pretty much bet it's a muslim. It doesn't matter what kind of packaging it comes in.

I never said I hated America. I said I was ashamed. I at least have flags in my yard and my kids sing patriotic songs all the time. I bet obamas kids don't even know the words since he doesn't see fit to be able to say them himself. How embarrasing.

Did any of you people watch the coverage last night? The Obama crowds in California, Chicago, Times Square, etc. were filled with people of ALL races, ALL ages...he won both the electoral vote AND the popular vote. He took states in the east and the west...he had huge support across America. Our foreign allies supported him...but yet, some Natchezians think they know more than the thousands of people who voted for him. I guess you guys have some kind of inside track on his relegious beliefs, etc. Get over it or move to Canada...oh never mind, you wouldn't be happy there either..they have universal health care. He is the president..and watching a black woman and white woman walk hand in hand to join their husbands on that stage was the greatest moment I have ever observed in politics. For those of you who cannot "stomach" the idea that a black man is president...well, get ready- by 2050 we white people will be a MINORITY. This country is changing (for the better, I might add), and if you can't accept that.....move.

LOL!!! Yes We Can turned to Yes We Did!!! Alright!

To the non-believers, know this....it was the vast majority of the white vote that put Obama in office. Like I said yesterday in a comment, ride around in neighborhoods and see if ANY campaign sign was in yards for the party of choice. Where you saw none.....that was an OBAMA vote! Neighbors fearing what each other would think, and peeking around in the voting booth so no one would know how you voted. What is killing white America is that Blacks were brought to this country, enslaved and ridiculed. Then you made a mockery of Blacks over the years. You told Blacks what they needed to do to succeed, and here you have a dignified Black man who has done just that. The new Commder in Chief, the NEW President of the United States. He is educated, he speaks well, he is ESQUIRE, and has the all American Family.....what is happening is that America or maybe just Natchez, is upset that he has accomplished successfully what you never thought would happen for a Black MAN! He is the NEW American DREAM! Anything you REALLY want to do can be accomplished by ANYONE! This man has a calling on his life to lead the masses.....all he did was answer.

It is 2008 and Obama will be our new president...Give the man a chance!! I don't think anything can be as bad as the last term!!! We need to come together as one..not just african americans or white..we are 1 country!! I am reading these comments and some of you are judging Obama before he can get his foot in the door. African Americans have stood back and watched other presidents do their job...now it is time to give someone else a chance!

I don't think change is always a bad thing! Let's look to the future not the past....It is a new day!!!! Obama received all kinds of votes..not just african americans but all races!!

Nowhere, but in the south do you find all this hate. I'm beginning to wonder is it hate or fear, does it frighten you so much that we can be more than you expect us to be? Does is bother you that we can be doctors, lawyers, and now even president? It's okay for us to have money as long as we're entertainers. It's alright if we are rappers, singers, football players, basketball players, or baseball players, because none of those people have to be educated. OOOOHHHH, but when we start achieving things even beyond your wildest dreams, you hate us. You believe the only thing Obama should be able to do in the white house is wash the windows and buff the floors and his wife has no place there except for housekeeping or in the kitchen. It has nothing to do with his religion, his background or what he believes in, it is his COLOR. Get over it, we're never going back to slavery, no matter how much you would like us to. And the stereotypes, LMAO, I work for everything I have and I'm not going to sit around and wait for a handout from Obama, McCain, or anyone else. The south is so far behind times that some of you would rather DIE than consider us equal.

I for one am actually surprised. I knew that Obama was going to win, but not like this.

Honestly, I don't know why everyone is worried, because I am not. If McCain would have won, then I still wouldn't be worried. I have a GOD on my side who has been taking care of me for years and will be taking care of me for years and presidents to come. Why are you Christians worried? Do you have faith in God? What's the real reason you are disappointed? Come on we are all strangers to each other anyway. I am actually surprised by the comments from some of you on here. I actually thought that you were not prejudice and racist, but now I see differently. I will be fine. I have someone who takes care of me.

Good Day and GOD BLESS all of you!

To all of those Obama supporters who have been blinded by his lies and deciet, you'll be regreting your decision in the coming years, small business will crumble due to high taxes meaning unemployment will go up, more low lifes on welfare, like most already in this area who sit thier butt at home, watch tv, make babies, and wait on goverment handouts, which comes out of the hardworking peoples paychecks. I was going to open my own business but now i would struggle worse than before to start off. And inheritance tax will be so bad that if my family business would be handed down i would be in debt after taxes. Muslim terrorists have wanted to come up with a plan for many many years to corrupt the US, now they have achieved that with Obama.....Say whatever you want to this, but you'll just be showing your ignorance cause you actually believed all the B.S. that came out of his mouth. He promised change, but didnt say it would be good or bad.....

I am not worried becaus he is black, I am worried because Obama has not morals and Christ Jesus is NOT Lord in his life. If he were, he would NOT be planning to overturn the partial birth abortion ban or support gay marriage. Obama won't stand up for ANYTHING God has commanded so I am supposed to believe he is a Christian? I think not.

Posted by kmbjd40 (anonymous) on November 5, 2008 at 8:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The rhetoric is done, now the reality begins. Congratulations to Obama. He ran a fine campaign and should be commended for that. No matter who you supported in this election, all of us should recognize that it's an historic moment. We've come a little closer to making the race issue a non-issue.

Republicans and conservatives shouldn't despair. This was a year when it would have been nearly impossible for any Republican to win or any Democrat to lose. And despite our loss last night, there were some bright spots: No fillibuster proof majority in the Senate, fewer seats lost in the house than predicted, gay marriage looks like it's going down in California and was banned in Florida. The exit polls all showed that the American people are still more closely aligned with Republicans on all the major issues. And keep in mind, Obama only won by 4 percentage points more than either Kerry or Gore got, and only 3% more than Clinton got in '96. Plus, only about 30% of voters said they are excited about an Obama presidency.

So now we Republicans and conservatives have to pick ourselves up and get ready for the 2010 mid-terms. With conditions what they are it should be a much more favorable environment for us.

I did not vote for him and it had NOTHING to do with the color of his skin - it has to do with his "spread the wealth" agenda, his record of voting/not voting in the senate, his record of being the most liberal senator, his stand on abortion, trying to deny his past associations, and I could go on but I hope you get my point and let's all hope he is a different present that his record in the senate - YOU CAN'T VOTE "PRESENT" AS THE PRESIDENT.

No one will agree with everything any leader promotes and if you do then you are unable to think for yourself. I am a Christian but I have respect for all religions. All Christians do not follow all the same rules but they all believe in Jesus. I feel that no matter what our religion we are all trying to get to the same place. Obama talks the talk so give the man a chance to walk the walk. And remember to try to encourage you children to support our president because the words heard from their mouths have surely come from yours first. I want to personally thank all of you McCain supporters for the congratulations on the democratic victory and thank you for your pledges of support.

I was a hard-won victory and will go down in history.

Just as John F. Kennedy in Kennedy/Johnson changed America profoundly for the better, Obama stands poised -- if he only achieves one or two of his stated goals -- to have a similar impact on history.

The people that stood against Kennedy, and their counterparts who will try to stand against Obama must occasionally be forced to do what is right in matters where they have no courage or vision to change.

God Bless America (please) and GO OBAMA -- do yourself proud.

People from Adams Co. stop bickering! The outcome of this election will have little impact on your lives. I promise there will always be a majority of poor people with a few who prosper, black and white. There will always be right wing conspiracy nuts living on the out skirts of our little society to cry havoc. Our citizens will always have the guns they feel necessary to kill. And yes Jesus Christ will always play a big roll in the way people love, hate, vote and live. Trust me we are the last on the list of concerns for either candidates because of our lasting reputation to change...ANYTHING

((momof1)) fall down on your knees and thank God that Obama was elected for President yesterday. Had Bush been re-elected . . . (Ooops, I'm sorry) if McSame had been elected, you could kiss your job "goodbye" . . . no paycheck would be coming in because your job would be sent overseas. If McSame/McCain had been elected, you would have found yourself in the unemployment and welfare lines . . . believe that! So be extremely grateful today. Yes, you do have a lot to be grateful for, whether you care to admit it or not . . . you know!

However, all is well, now!!! HOPE is alive and where there's hope, there are possibilities.

((aak1972)), does Mexico have universal healthcare? If you have school-age children, will Mexico offer them a free education? As I have suggested before, I think a move to Mexico would be an ideal solution for all the Obama-haters. Maybe your well has run dry in the United States. Mexico may have tastier water for you to drink but I would suggest you take a little Pepto-Bismol or Kaeopectate [sic] with you!

Good riddance!!!!!

When was the last time such a spiritual thing happened to black people -- poor people, and minorities of every stripe? This effect is not the end-all of an Obama presidency, but a predictable side-effect -- this spiritual surge. It is amazing how many people who claim spiritual superiority cannot see the goodness of this -- because their idea of God and goodness is just not very spiritual.

If you cannot feel the injection of pride, or accomplishment, of empowerment in the otherwise historically disenfranchised then perhaps it should be a religious matter for you -- and you should ask your minister if it is reasonable to be so unfeeling.

This gives black folks a nudge they deserve. It contributes to their vision of having a future. It does this in good ways that do not really cost the rest of us anything except the yoke of sameness that the Republicans have offered us for too long as the ONLY option.

Besides this, we now have a president who at least acts like the people matter, who is intelligent, who is articulate, and who the WHOLE WORLD is cheering on.

Of course, a lot of people do not consider empowerment to be a spiritual matter like liberals do.

This "change" that you all talk about is not going to benefit EVERYONE!!! We are looking at a big change to come but not a change for good. He can't sit and TALK through the mess in Iraq and Iran. At some point, he is going to have to take action and think for himself. Now that we don't have a choice I hope he does what he is supposed to, although I'm not sure what that is because he hasn't answered a question in a year on the campaign. Anyway, we could go on and on about how he is not qualified to be our President, but I think I would rather start hiding my money.

Natchezlady...beautifully stated! It is apparent that regardless of what has happened here will never be embraced by those who are narrowed-minded and for many bigots in their own right. You have people on here talking about they are now going to start going to church because of the outcome of this election. Speaking as a devout Christian, you really should have been doing that anyway, maybe your outlook on life would be a lot better. Reading God's Word and really understanding what has been written would probably change your skewed ideology about the world.

I am empathetic that a lot of you think that the last 8 years of Bush was what this country needed, when nothing has happened other than the fact that he has led us skipping along, into a recession, while he and Laura will go back to their ranch in Crawford, kicking back, while they watch someone else attempt to clean up the mess he made. It will definitely not be an overnight change, but I believe that as AMERICANS, it is imperative that all of us come to terms with reality and again stop pointing fingers, spreading hatred, because it causes your children to hate and to be racists, simply because someone else doesn't believe in what you/they believe in or that a particular race or social class is inferior to their own. It doesn't make that person wrong, it makes them different. That is what's supposed to be wonderful about this country. We have our choice to live our lives the way we choose, as well as choose what are beliefs are. We need to do what we can in our communities to get the USA back on the right track. Take the blinders off people. Barack Obama was not elected by only one race of people, but by the AMERICAN PEOPLE!

Yea there will be no change!! I am willing to bet just b/c Obamo is president blacks poor people or minorities of every stripe will not do anything different they are doing now. The dream of now getting something from the government is just that a dream.

Why is it that because he won he wasn't judged by his color but his character, but if people like me didn't vote for him we are racist? That doesn't make sense. If it isn't about his color, then why is this such an accomplishment with his being the first African American President? It's sad we don't judge credentials rather than color. Very very sad. That is why all of the "racists" are worried about the future.

Watching the election returns was very EMPOWERING for me . . . very spiritual and uplifting!!

I have renewed faith in America now. I'm so proud to be an American. So proud of all the people who stood side-by-side to cheer on our next President.

I was so impressed by all the colors of the rainbow (the face of change) in the sea of "red, white and blue" who voted for and supported Barack Obama.

So let's not pretend that this election is uniquely about race, just because it has a racial balancing effect.

""Hope. HaHa. I just HOPE we all survive under a baby killing,"
Against abortion? Awesome! Then don't do it.

"terrorist loving"
Chain emails and out-of-context Youtube videos aren't a good source for information.

"liberal"
Good.

"that has no back bone"
Coming out of nowhere, challenging senior senators, and defeating the CLINTONS requires no backbone, not at all.

"But maybe if I quit my job and go on Welfare your new president will take care of me too."
Because taxes only go towards those that exploit the welfare system.

Hell I am proud to be an American too!!! We have the right to voice our beleifs and opinions and if they offend someone so what! I have the right to dislike all politicians and a government that has become way too large and overpowering. I dont dislike Obama b/c he his half black. The man cant help who is parents and grandparents slept with. I dislike any politician who wants to enlarge government. His plan makes no mathematical sense. Unless ofcourse we dont repay any of our debt.

WOW...i didn't know Michelle Obam was on this blog.

You should ALWAYS be proud of your country.

Lots of people have died so that you could show your pride and your freedom.

Yeahhuhhuh...that is understandable, but the fact remains that people that voted for him are mad at McCain voters because we are "racists". Why are we racist just because we don't agree with Obama's issues? His ideals are extreme left and he can't reach over party lines....he has already shown that. So, what makes you think he can better this country? Also, his qualifications don't exactly fall in line, even with his Vice President.

The Republicans CANNOT always slur their opponents and win every time.

A black (or half-black) man CAN win if he works and is smart enough to be a good politcian.

Democrats CAN win against Republicans when Republicans become corrupt.

The people CAN vote out of something other than FEAR.

Voting CAN work.

The ignorant, hateful, fearful masses MUST change their thinking if they want to come along with the rest of us.

America IS what it claims to be, or at least it COULD be.

NOBODY should ever say you should always be proud of your country -- no country should be excused for doing wrong -- and only an insecure country would demand it be able to do anything and still be praised.

Once again...he is smart and can speak well, but he is NOT as qualified as others for the job. Voting works as long as the electoral college is in a candidate's favor. If the electoral colleges were a little more even, this race would have been MUCH tighter than it turned out. There are many things wrong with this country, and they are not all Republican's fault. I identify with many beliefs of the Democrats, just not of Barack Obama's. Remember please that Congress is Democratic Majority and they make many decisions regarding our country, so to put the blame on the GOP is ludicrous. You should always be proud of your country, the best country in the world because no matter what has happened, we will always bounce back regardless of our government. The people are too strong not to fight back with a vengeance. But, once again my point....he is under qualified for the job of Commander-in-Chief.

((obamayamama)), please add this statistic to your fact-book: 100% of African Americans have voted for all the previous presidents (all of them were White)!!!!!! Does that fact spell R-A-C-I-S-M????
