Racial barrier crumbled Tuesday night

Published Thursday, November 6, 2008

Guess what? The sun rose Wednesday morning just like always. The birds chirped and the grass grew.

That reality may have shocked some voters whose candidates didn’t win Tuesday, on the culminating day of an amazingly long and sometimes bitter campaign to select our nation’s leader.

But now everyone — from both sides of the election — needs to take a deep breath and let the campaign wounds heal. The race is over and the best man won. And, the best man made history, too.

On Tuesday night, the nation’s largest remaining color barrier was smashed to bits as Americans chose their first black president.

Ultimately, history will judge Barack Obama on his performance, not his skin color.

But Obama’s election is an important milestone. Seeing the “first” in anything is great and worth celebrating. But won’t it be nice when our nation sees our citizens not by what separates us and makes us different, but by the things we share.

That dream may take years, but eventually it will happen.

America has always been a melting pot of cultures and we should embrace our differences, not use them to divide us further.

As Obama said in his gracious, conciliatory acceptance speech on Wednesday night: “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”

Well said, Mr. President (elect).

Just a poor boy with a dream, a lunch box, five major networks, and two billion dollars. Yes, anyone can do it.

Well, now the government can do away completely all set-aside programs for minorites because the barrier for all offices and businesses have been totally torn down. This truly is a great and wonderful day.

I look forward to bidding on a level playing field with everybody in business from now on. Thanks Barac

I believe the racial 'barriers' will, ultimately, be set back. No political cartoons or satire will be allowed (racist bigotry, you know), free speech will be greatly curttailed, and anything he does will (or, will not) be based on the color of his skin in addition to the content of his character. And, he IS a character. It is a sad day for America, not because a half-white man was elected Prez, but because this particular half-white man was elected by millions of Kool-Aid drinkers. I, for one, will take care of me and my household without NObama or his ilk.

as usual, Mississippi is two steps behind everybody else...the hatred and anomosity posted on these blogs is truly astounding. Makes one think that the KKK is alive and well in our quaint little river town. Obama won nationally..states on both coasts and in the north. The only place he didn't win was the south...big surprise!! So do people in our community know something 62 million Americans don't know about him. Of course not! The rest of the country simply did not fall for all the negative propaganda that the McCain camp spewed...muslim? PULEEEEEEZE! Give me a break!

I think that all these racial slurs shows how immature people are in society...Instead of giving the newly elected President a chance, you are judging him by his color and not the fact that he is a highly intelligent individual, that is well spoken, he loves his family and yes he has money, oh that's right, this America, only rich white people can do that...Have we forgotten that this economy is in the shape it's in because of Bush and greedy investors on wall street but we want to blame Barak, grow up people, this is 2008!!! So what if he is half white, I am sure some of you have some black folk in your family too...but don't tell nobody you might not want no one to know that, after all we do live down south...

The south has been known for being "bible thumpers" from waaaay back. Heck, we're situated right in the Bible Belt. Maybe Southerners know more about prophecy then the majority of Americans. The Bible did say that many are called but few chosen.

Don't use the bible to justify racism, the God I serve sees no color, I am glad that he chose Barak Obama at this appointed time to serve this country for all people....

there is a big difference between being a christian and being someone who thinks they are. Many "bible-thumpers" are the ones who are the most bigotted in this community. They ARE NOT christians.....attending church does not make you a christian...LIVING the bible does.

So you're saying he's the anti christ? Why because he is black, maybe God gave us another chance by not letting McCain be the president cause he's the anti christ...Whose to say... Just let the man be the president...

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 9:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

No mjg2000 I am saying he could be. If all the hype on the republican side about him being a muslim turns out to be true then I would say its a stong possibility. You cant get much more anti-christian than the muslim faith. If you are at all a christian you know someone will be the anti-chist. The Bible says the anti-christ will say peace peace when there is no peace. He will fool many with his great speech. Read your Bible and you will find many similarities in what the Bible says the anti-christ will be and what Obama is. And do not insult my intelligence by assuming I made that statement b/c he is black. If that is your only arguement against my blogs please do not waste my time.

Posted by MJG2000 (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

My argument is that you're saying he could be the antichrist alot more has to happen before the antichrist comes, either way it goes the antichrist is coming all the christians have to do is be prepared...To judge this man and call him that i think is very presumptous...and he is not a muslim...

Tell me this, what more has to happen? And I agree i am being presumptous but I do have my concerns.

I am not going into detail with all that but aleast we agree to disagree...I think we all want what's best for this country...He's in office now, so now we have to respect the authority that has been placed before us...We all have to seek our own soul salvation...with that being said, I am going to live my life the way I need to and obey what the bible says, and i am going to love my neighbor, this is not my battle to fight it's the Lord's..

Barak:
Meaning Lightning.
Biblical context The Biblical baby name Barak is Hebrew in origin and it's meaning is lightning or flashing sword.
Barak is pronounced baw-rawk'.
Barak was the son of Abinoam. Under the guidance of the prophetess Deborah, Barak made war against Jabin, the king of Hazor and delivered Israel from his tyranny.
Judges 4:6,16; Judges 5; Hebrews 11:32

kpage...62 MILLION people voted for him....so you're saying you know more than all of them? 62 MILLION people believe that even though he lacks experience, he is the right person to lead this country at this time. As for "experience", McCain had it but never did anything to benefit all Americans during all his years in congress. Sometimes the worst thing you can have is experience...it means you have a record of just how apathetic you have been.

John:
Meaning God is Gracious
Biblical context - John was an apostle of Jesus and chosen to lead the disciples after the crucifiction.

Many people are named John, many are named Barak in eastern lands. The name symbolizes NOTHING.
It would be like saying everyone named David is a king, everyone named Jesus (Spanish language ) is the christ.

It's about the stupidest statement I have ever seen anyone on here make.

Why would the anti-christ have to be a muslim? Muslims also believe in Jesus and they have a book dedicated to Mary in the Quran. The anti-christ would have to be jewish or atheist is my belief, and more than likely the non believer. I really don't believe anyone who truly believes in God could do these things unless they have purposely been misguided.

One might ask, where is the Christian love? It certainly seems to have been misplaced. Have we become misguided to the point that we can't even say we are sorry about misguided missiles and war?

Instead of being worried with WHO the anti-Christ is or will be, you all need to be concerned about your many Anti-Christ SPIRITS. Yep, that's right! Many of you, from your postings have anti-Christ spirits and I bet you are in church every Sunday. You racially bash folk and try to cloak it in "conservatism" when truth be told, you are FAR from being conservative. You're hateful and resentful. That's what you are. Calling it like it is. A spade a spade.

IF Racial barriers are to truly be torn down, people must respect the past of others, respect others regardless of the skin color and I believe this must be done individually, not collectively. The individual must search himself. A lot of us won't do this because we are fully aware of our anti-Christ spirits. The Christ I know loved one and all. There are many passages in the Bible where the Pharisees talked against Jesus because of the people he would keep in his company. They weren't all people of one race. They weren't all Jews, they weren't all wealthy. No, they weren't.

Actually Teach if you study your Bible you will find that when Jesus was born he was to be the saviour of the Jews and the Jews only.

That is NOT what my post stated. Of course Jesus is King of the Jews. My post stated Jesus was often ridiculed by so called religious folk of His day. That's what my post is stating. He did NOT only associate himself with Jews creating the example to us all and leaving us without any excuses. He loved all people, he just didn't like their sin.

Read.

Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way , the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

BARACK OBAMA IS BI-RACIAL!!!!!!!!! So maybe yall need to find another reason to say why he got chosen to be president... He got just as many white votes as he did blacks.... Give the man a break....

Forget that he's half-white/half-black. Look at his CHARACTER. He is an evil man, surrounded by evil people. There have been many inspirational speakers along the way - Lenin, Mussolini, Hitler - who lulled the masses into a false sense of security, promising them anything the people wanted to hear, then turning on them like a ravishing wolf. He will attempt to undo all that has been accomplished in this country. But, there is alive and well a conservative underground who will not let him lead this country into oblivion. I can't wait to hear all the racial accusations...racist, bigot, etc. I say, "And, your point is...?" Thank God I live in Texas - we are still a republic, and can declare ourselves free and independent. The South had the right idea in 1861. Seems the President of the Northern states at that time was also preaching 'peace and harmony', then put the land into war that cost over 620,000 young men and boys, not counting over 50,000 civilians, black and white. History does repeat itself.

Are you serious reb1843? Texas is still a republic and can leave the union? I just love this blog, you can learn so much on it!

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 5:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Please give FACTS to support your comment that "he is an evil man." Also in doing so, please explain how Bush is not evil? I guess the masses were lulled the last 8 years when Bush kept getting voted in. Also, please explain WHY not only did the Dems take the Presidency back, but what happened in the House and the Senate?

No one has to call you a racist or a bigot because you already KNOW you are one. Lets see, what was this country like in 1861? In order to confirm you are a racist and a bigot, one must examine the atmosphere of that time and that you clearly align your thoughts and beliefs with the South at that time. Well one, the institution of slavery was on the chopping block and several states left the Southern union and joined the Northern union as a bid to call slavery what it was, an EVIL institution.

IMO, this country would have never gone to war had the South conceded and agreed that slavery was evil and needed to end, but someone had to pick the cotton, clean the homes, shine the shoes, unwillingly of course, and we knew who wasn't. Of the DICTATORS above that you mentioned, your comments here and beliefs more closely align with theirs, more so than Obama's ever could. Hitler especially believed in the massacre and subservience of a group of people, just like some Southerners did in 1861!

I didn't bring race into this, but since you did by making reference to 1861, I had to counter your foolishness before someone else read this and mistakingly took it to heart.

Ok, so back to the point. Racial barriers have been destroyed, so can we do away with racial set-aside programs in business and government NOW???????

Can we puit everybody in the same playing field and start choosing people based on qualification instead of skin tone, and lets start with the NEXT Superintendent of Education in Natchez and the next head of Alcorn JSU or MVSU.....

How about that teach 4 piece...what do you have to say about those ideas????????

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 6:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Redusmfan, not regarding this post you last posted but according to MANY of your posts, you will need to look into yourself and remove the racial barrier that only you can.

As for the playing field, no cigars yet! The nation has yet to manifest true racial reconciliation but I do believe we are on our way and this is a great start. I truly believe in people being chosen based upon their qualifications, but we can't TRUST that everyone will do this, now can we? That's why breaking down racial barriers are per person and actions do speak louder than words. I'm afraid if the playing field were really level Red, I don't think the picture would look like you think it would.

Let's also start this for MSU, Ole Miss, USM, Delta State, etc. I rarely agree with you, but on this one, I am partial towards it.

Lets tear down the barriers and go for it. I can see that if it were done immediately, you would be the one in fear of losing a position or 2, not me. ..

No doubt about it at all....

lol...

Lets start by taking "your race" off every application in this country, whether it is a loan application or school application. Lets take it off every government application, whether it is for employment or farm loans....lets do it tomorrow and see what the country looks like in 2 years...I believe that YOU would be seriously surprised....not me....

I would love to wake up in the morning and find that all of the political remarks in these blogs would be about what red stated..."start choosing people based on qualification instead of skin tone". It needs to start out at a local level in every aspect of our lives. Agree to disagree but speak factually, speak with passion for the right of the one and only race...the human race.

Posted by Teach4Peace (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 7:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have what I have and have had off my OWN merit, hard work, education and experience. I owe it all to God, no man. I don't FEAR losing ANY position. Perhaps you should run that by some of your unqualified colleagues who are in positions you very well know they don't qualify for. I have steadily held any position I wanted and when something better came along, I exercised my right to go for the best and got it.

Red, I have to yet agree with removing race from job applications especially. What does it matter my race and sex, you should be interested in IF I can do the job or not. Also, I even had someone ask if I had children. What does that matter? You DO KNOW that is also used to discriminate against blacks as well.

Posted by 2008 (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 8:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It would appear that in due time the postings will and seemingly are turning from joy and anger to positive and united. With each passing day away from the election people will start to come together for the betterment of all, it is happening across the nation. The South is such a small part of the country that at some point those that are stuck on color will be left behind. Since we our all of the same race then the differential is in the qualifications, whether it is for a home loan, student loan, a job whatever. By providing the best education our country can provide to our children will also be providing the best qualifications for their future. Since qualifications have no color, all would have the opportunity to excel.

"Racial barrier crumbled Tuesday night". The editors of the Democrat should have picked a better title for this article. Everyone knows that no barrier crumbled. If anything it is worse. This town is basically a good town with a few good people, both white and black. But, at the same time I must say, I have lived in several areas of Mississippi and travelled all over this country but I have never in my life experienced a more racist town than Natchez. The racism comes mainly from black people. I know there are racists of all colors but when you stand in line at a store and a black clerk waits on the black customer behind you first that is a little tip off. There have been many instances of this and it only makes one wonder why should I try to get along when the "other race" doesn't. I finally gave up and try to treat the few blacks I know that aren't that way with respect and the other racist blacks can get what they give.

I am glad to see all the millenialist, dittoheads, waiting for rapture and antichrist folks are now on the fringe. For a while during the Bush years I thought they might take over this free nation. They are always hoping and trying to fulfil their own prophecies for the last 2000 years everything new and big, good and bad, in society is hailed as the coming of the Antichrist.

I voted for Obama because I am a proud liberal, just like many hardworking educated whites did. I didn t vote for him because of his race, but I will congratulate him for being the first of his race in this exalted office.

The reason Obama got elected is because this country has shifted to be more Liberal. While Mccain was perhaps more qualified, he and Palin weren't Liberal enough and thus they were behind the times. This Liberal shift has been mostly a reaction to President Bush and Cheney. So President- elect Obama is the ANTIBUSH!!!

So, all this anger is stupid. Saying that he won because he is BLACK is stupid. You would think that by now we are over this racial madness. One writer wrote earlier, what is done is done. He is the President so get over it. If you don't like it there are so many other countries you can move to. I pray for all of you that have this hatred in your hearts. Barak can do no worst than Bush has done for the past 8 years or what his father did before him or what Reagan done before that. Teach4Peace,
Without giving you another history lesson "101", the South did NOT secede because of slavery, no matter how much you wish to flatter yourself and others who believe that ilk. The South was INVADED by a foreign country. Lincoln did not invade the South to flee slaves. He invaded the South to protect his punitive tariff, the lifeblood of Yankee economy. Wars are not fought over lofty, sentimental ideals like 'slavery' - they are fought over M-O-N-E-Y. What part of any of this do you not understand? The colonies could secede from England, but the South not allowed to secede from the North? Hello?!
Blacks who like living here in America should thank God for being descendants of slaves. Without that, they would not even exist - at any time or any place. I'm sure that concept escapes your logic, as well. Do the math.

You should be ashamed of yourself for making such a statement: "Blacks who like living here in America should thank God for being descendants of slaves."
I had to leave Natchez and see things from a different point of view. I didn't realize how bad it was until I saw how people treated each other in diffent areas of the country and the world. It truly saddens me to know that there are people who still have such hatred in their hearts, so much that they even deceive themselves.
Barack Obama is no anti-christ nor is he evil. This man has commited himself to a position to better our country for all of us and is being ridiculed by the same people who he will do it for. That just goes to show how much some of you have to learn. It isn't about race, even though thats always how it will be argued in the end. I would hope you all will atleast give this man the opportunity to show what he is capable of before you belittle him.
Natchez along with a good portion of the south just cant seem to let go, its like the palestinians and isrealites. They have been fighting for so long that eventually you'll forget why you were even fighting, just continuing this life cycle of hatred because thats all you know.

Reb1843, I see you have missed the mark as you always do and you misconstrued my post. I NEVER said the South conceded in my post. I said "SHOULD (IF) THE SOUTH CONCEDED." I don't need a history lesson from you.

As far as your comment about blacks needing to be happy that slavery brought them here, you are one of the posters with the very ANTI-CHRIST spirit I was speaking of. Only a person with such a spirit could make such a vile statement. Check yourself.

Barak did not win because he was black. There aren't enough black people in the United States to have gotten him elected alone. Many, Many, Many WHITE people voted for him also. They have all made changes that affected the United States in a bad way. Remember Black people could not get Barak in alone White people, Hispanic people and other races helped him get there

Look here fine southern gentry,
We in the Great Industrialized North have some tips and some Listerine for sale.
1) Develop is not spelled with an "e"
2) Blogs are not the same as postings; short cotton is not the same as long.
3) The Great Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, did fight to free the slaves and to ensure economic viability of the nation. With slavery there could be no free labor that we Northerners so benefit from.

Now good people of the Gnat-chavez, we do have some wonderful mouth wash for sale. Possibly it will allow for the taste of defeat to be washed out of your proper christian mouths.

Dear North...as my mother would often remind me, "Son, you can tell a lot about a Yankee; you just can't tell 'em very much!" She must have had you and your ilk in mind. Aberham Linkum destroyed the Constitution. He destroyed our republican form of government. He did NOT invade the South to free the slaves. He DID invade the South to protect his tariffs, the South of which contributed over 3/4 to the national government, yet saw little in return. No wonder the South seceded. And, they did not secede to protect slavery. The Constitution already made that provision, as well as the fugitive slave law. The South, once it seceded, no longer had the protection of the US Constitution. They had far more important issues to leave the union than some specious pretense of freeing black folks.

Reb1843,

If any one of us is one of those 'sheeple' I would say more you than I. I can see based off of some of the statements you've made you were brought up to believe the good ole boy mentality is the right and only way to think. I'm sorry I have to be the one to break it to you, but there is a lot more to life than that. Apparently you have not ventured out much to see that things have changed from how the old south used to be. Times have changed, discrimination is far less prominent in other parts of the country. In fact I would go as far as saying almost non-existent in most. But leave it up to a stiff hearted Natchezian to show the world that some of those people are alive and well. And yes in fact the secession was to protect slavery seeing that it was the manner in which their crops and produce were sewn and harvested. The use of slaves is how the south was able to produce so much and retain the profit by not having to pay anyone for the labor. You should really use some common sense when you make statements like that.

Chat,
First, you just rattle on without stating any facts, just 'feel-good' sentiments.
Contrary to what you and zillions of others have been led to believe (thanks to the abyssmal public education system now prevalent for the last 40 years), a slaveowner "paid" for his labor a heck of a lot more than the current day 'welfare.' He/she was responsible for the labor from cradle to grave - food, housing, clothing, medical, etc. And, if a slave committed a crime, the owner was responsible for the damage. Are you still looking for '40 acres and a mule' or is Nobama gonna get that for you? What's your point? Common sense is sorely lacking, but not by me.

I'm not looking for any handouts my friend. I am sorry that I have enlisted to protect narrow minded people like you. But I dont even blame you for it. You are just a product of your environment. Oh, and as far as education my friend, I got the majority of mine outside of the state of Mississippi. So I was fortunate enough to gain some knowledge from someone who gave a damn. Whenever you do decide to wake up and see that slavery isn't coming back let me know. I have no reason to discriminate against anyone, in fact my girlfriend is Iranian, but I don't hold her accountable for the things that some of the others have done.
Last but not least, please dont try to justify slavery by saying the owners paid for their labor. The simple fact of the matter is that anyone who was a slave was held against their own free will, without choice. I don't know if you have children but think about this......what imagine if your child was a slave? No need to ever as them what they want to be when they grow up, cause they dont have that option.

Chat,
Reading between the lines, I assume you are in the armed services? You must be fairly young. In any event, thank you for your service. However, I am sure Obama is going to protect us all, so I can sleep well at night. If not, I know how to protect myself against enemies, foreign or domestic.
No one wishes the 'peculiar institution' of slavery to resurface in this country or anywhere else. However, people (educated or not) are unable to accept the facts regarding slavery and how 'evil' the South was. The simple fact (as you state) was that Africans were enslaved first by their own people, the best 'kept back' to serve the tribal chieftains, the remainder traded to Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English traders, soon followed by the Yankee merchants of New England. 80% of those carried from Africa ended up in South America and the Caribbean. Unless they emigrated to the United States following 1865, I am merely making an historical and mathematical fact that those black Americans living in the US today owe their existance to Africans brought over during the 1700 and 1800s. You must have gotten the 'History of Slavery' taught by Jesse , Al, and Kweise. By the way, "Roots" is fiction.
