Residents take Obama election to heart

Published Thursday, November 6, 2008

NATCHEZ — It’s easy to see history in the face of president-elect Barack Obama.

But for some, that history isn’t textbook; it’s heartfelt.

The Rev. Clifton Marvel, vice president of the local branch of the NAACP, never thought he’d see a black president.

“I never envisioned it happening in my lifetime,” he said.

But it did. And just like that, everything has changed, Marvel said.

Generations of white Americans younger than his own will grow up with a black president. And racism may never be the same.

“It’s definitely going to give them a new attitude and a new perspective on black people as a whole,” he said.

Natchez resident Mamie Mazique, 78, is in much the same boat as Marvel. She’s spent a lifetime working, hoping and praying for equality. But she didn’t expect this.

“I never imaged that a black person would be elected to the office of the President of the United States of America,” she said. “I knew that it should have been possible, but I never did believe it would happen.”

Mazique said this is the goal that the black community has long been waiting for.

“We’ve just fought for this for so long and it’s a blessing,” she said.

Former justice court judge Mary Toles was a leader in the civil rights movement in Mississippi. Since that time she helped form the Natchez Association for the Preservation of Afro-American Culture’s museum on Main Street.

“I thought Sen. Obama had not really paid his dues,” she said. “I’m old school, from the civil rights movement and believe you have to work your way up.”

But each doubt, each skepticism and each dream the local black leaders felt could not be attained was swept away as Obama crossed the stage Tuesday evening to give his acceptance speech.

Natchez Alderwoman Joyce-Arceneaux-Mathis said Tuesday’s election makes America appear as a beacon of progress.

“Finally, this sets us completely apart from the rest of the world,” she said.

Indeed, the world will take notice of the cohesion this will cause, Marvel said.

“Globally, I think it will speak to the nations around the world that America is the United States of America and united in the respect that all people that have come to America are standing together,” he said.

Mathis said both white and black Americans voted for Obama.

“It’s just a wonderful feeling to see the country come together across racial lines to support a candidate,” she said.

Mazique also said it is undeniable that a great number of nationalities had to vote for Obama to be elected.

“I believe it was all nationalities that voted him in,” she said. “You could look across the screen on the TV and you saw all kinds of people, it wasn’t just black people voting for him.”

From blurring out stereotypes to eradicating racism, the hope is there, Marvel said.

“(Obama’s election) means realizing a significant portion of ‘I Have A Dream’ by Dr. Martin Luther King that electrified us as a black community in years past, of the hope that one day the African American community would experience this part of the dream and re-energize us in the belief of the American dream,” Marvel said.

He said he hopes that young black citizens will realize that they, too, can excel at anything they want.

Toles said she hopes young blacks will take pride in themselves now and work hard to pursue their dreams, too.

“I think that they’re going to be inspired and say, ‘If he can do it, if I can go to school and prepare myself, I can do it,’” she said.

Way to go Obama!

dangyankee:

It was a sight to see. This is what America is all about, all people of all races of all classes standing together. I am so sick of this status quo crap. Obama showed the world what America can be.

I don't know what it says about his leadership dangyankee because he so far hasn't shown any, he's only been a first term junior senator so far and a poverty pimp before that, but it does show that television is an effective tool for political change; it shows that a candidate who never clearly defines himself and hides behind the blank wall of vague ideological terms aimed at the lowest level of intellect can win our presidency.

It shows that the American people are still willing to be whipsawed back and forth between two parties while both parties edge the country inexorably away from the principles the candidates of both parties claim to revere.

It shows that you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time. I'm waiting for the day when the people finally say "hey, you can't fool all of us all of the time".

It shows that at a time of great economic distress many Americans are willing to elect a president who has promised to increase their utility bills in order to change their behavior, that they are willing to elect a president who sees no wrong in putting the nation's checkbook in the hands of a small coterie of private banks. It shows that many American people are so enamored of an entertaining presence they are unwilling to question or reason or even to listen to the message underlying the battle cry of "change".

In short, it shows that the American people are not ready for democracy.

Obama showed the world what America can be. That's right he showed how to steal an election. He spent a record amount of money to have the media in his pocket. Acorn helped with voter fraud. The fact is Obama lied his way to the white house from the start dividing this country more than it has been in 45 years. Hope he and his star struck followers are happy. Given a little time they will see what he really is all about. Too late now though.

What I saw in Chicago and across the country was unity not division, I do not now or do I ever expect to see the same in Mississippi. The end result of Bush's policies was the country going in the toilet, the people have spoken.

Only one day after history was made, I am already tired of hearing people saying that they will have never believe we would have a Black President.

OK we got him...

The bible tells us that many that were first will be last and the last will be first. The bible is being fulfilled people.
Wake up and put all this prejudice behind you. And that is to all races! It's time to come together local folks! The country is trying already.

We (Blacks) as a People have been last for many years, but on November 04, 2008, the last became first. The word of God will and shall stand.

Will someone please tell me why they keep calling him a black? Why not white? Better than that why not Kenyan?

That shouldn't even be a reason to vote for someone for president....Geezz people say this world has changed sure it has.....

Did anyone see his sperm donar on tv with that red hat on oh my goodness...

Congrats to Obama maybe he will make a GOOD diffrence...

I voted for him, I am white, and I was not thinking of who was black, white or any color. only who would be best for our country. And Help us out of this mess we are in. If we don't pull together, It not going to work. He can't do it alone. The people has to stand together. Or failure is sure to come. From all sides

I think we all need to take the time and watch this clip from Oprah Winfrey's television show on yesterday! You can find it at this site http://www.oprah.com/media/20081105_tows... We all have many opinions about this election, but when it comes down to it, we will all need each other before its over! Have a blessed day!

I am glad to see a MAN being voted in. Personally the wrong MAN. You got to look at the heart of a person. and trust me, color blind is a good thing, but heart blind is another!!! I still say he is a wolf in sheep's clothing. "satan can come as and Angle of Light"

Oboma's principals go against the fibers of our founding fathers and many from the word of GOD. But I do find comfort in knowing Oboma got elected. He is going to take this country into the direction of the new world order. For those of us that are Christians, let's hear the call of Christ in our lives. Let's get the message out and get people into a real Christian Church.

JESUS is COMING SOON!!!!!!!

EnKiKur...I'm agreeing with you on this subject, sweetie. Well said, my friend.

Though I didn't vote for Obama, I respect the importance it holds for black people. I want blacks to be treated equally, for no man is better than another. No one should hold them back when they reach for the stars, or the highest office in America...they just chose the wrong black man.

As a military man, I am proud of this day and what it says about this Country of ours. I wont to remind all of you what Abraham Lincoln once said" The America that we have built will not be destroyed from the outside but from with in" and what historians tell us is hate, greed and pride will destroy this Nation. This "Man" doesn't have to prove anything else. He merely has to surround himself with the right character of people willing to do what's right for all Americans. The problem, as I saw it yesterday after the announcement was made.It was on the faces of most and simply put "the good ole boy system is a thing of the past". We have no idea were this country can go in the next 4 years, but it damn sure wasn't going any were positive with what most (w)Southerners supported. And if you will support a man whom merely looks out for the (w) rich and alienates the country, than why not support a man who believes in unity and change. The same people that are upset today, tomorrow, next week and for times to come. They are the son's and daughters of the people who were upset when blacks were given the right to vote and allowed to exercise it. Because they knew eventually we would put it to good use.
So I ask that all God fearing Mississipians continue to pray for peace, the safe return of our troops and for President elect OBAMA...
"God has blessed America"

I'm just glad we don't have to hear about the poor colored folks from broken homes being oppressed anymore. This election shows that everyone is equal and the traditional excuses do not apply. Racial excuses about bad test scores or unemployment are no longer valid. Obama is right "It's been a long time coming".

It seems as if a lot of people in this country felt the same way I do. THEY ARE SICK OF GEORGE W. BUSH AND THE REPUBLICANS. Don't get me wrong I voted for McCann but, it was what I thought the best of two poor choices. Obama is my president now. He blew a lot of smoke and now he has his chance. I pray that he can meet the challenges he will face and like somebody has already said, I don't care if he is purple if he can fix this mess we are in. This has also proven that if you work hard and play your cards right, no matter your national origin you can be anything you set your mind to in America.

Ingodwetrust, Look don't even bother yourself responding to those type of people. I had a spat yesterday with someone over the samething. I just ignore it and keep reading. See the thing is they are pissed and they have to take their anger out on someone because Obama won. Which I can totally understand had I voted for McShame and he lost I probaly would be pissed to. Let it go, ignore it, and let God deal with them. Save your self the time.....they just wanna be seen that's all. Believe me the Bible mite burn their hands if they touch it, but on judgement day God is going to say,".....do you remember when you had hatred in your heart......."

I have no problem with the man being black. The color is not the issue! I am not racist nor did my parents hand down prejudices. They got the wrong MAN, that's all. It's not that he's black. Why tell me I'm upset because the man elected is black? THAT'S NOT THE ISSUE HERE!!!! He's the wrong MAN, period.

I'm not pissed because a black man won the election! Why am I terrible because I voted for the other guy? Neither choice was that great but I voted for the guy with more experience and proven loyalty.

I didn't want Hillary to win for various reasons. Does this make me discriminatory? I'm a woman, too. Who cares what color Obama is? I just don't agree with him, that's all.

If the election was about electing a black president what about all the blacks in prison, all the blacks on PERMANENT welfare or all kinds of crazy checks, goverment giveaways, and the countless thousands who have and do not or ever will know their fathers, but that,s no problem, they make countless jokes about it that are not funny, with those people that choose to not have a father. It,s a joke and something they are proud of. But the American taxpayer pays the fiddler, always. If black is supposedly what we need,I don,t think we need anymore of the above. The fanatical religious part is coming soon and it won,t be pretty.

Let the debate move on.
We're all Americans now. Time to drop the hyphenating "African-"
Finally, it's now about character, not color.
It's about values, not victims.
It's about individual achievement, not about collective alienation.

Natchez Democrat- why is it that every time you feature pictures/articles about Obama you quote/feature only African-Americans? There were plenty of white people in Adams County that voted for him too. Why perpetuate the stereotype that only black people suppported him?

You know what I am pissed. But not b/c Obama won. I am pissed that some black people assume we have to be racist if we dont like Obama. Most of us realize that we live in a somewhat democratic country and are not gonna bail just b/c we now have a black president. I do not like his ideas, plans, nor his lack of experience.

Posted by ntznana (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 8:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

why is everything in obamas election got to be about racism? i have a problem with his beliefs not his color! i believe marriage should be between a man and a woman not man and man or woman and woman. it was not Gods plan for it to be that way. i believe every life is presious and abortion should not exist there are plenty of families wanting those unborn children. i also believe that offshore drilling is valuable to our future. so people need to quit calling everyone that is against obama a racist we are not racist we just have morals that obama doesnt posses! and also isnt obama half white??? so maybe he isnt the first truely black president!!! i also believe that the bibles prophacy is being fulfilled!

Oh, but NO, Beautifully defined, move to Africa, what the h--- are you talking about. We were in Africa, at least our ancestors were. It was your ancestors that stole us and brought us to America. It was your ancestors that raped our women and made babies of all shades of black. They trapped our people and brought them over here on ships. And you you say go to Africa! No sweetheart, we are staying right here. We Are True Americans now. Just deal with it because we are not going anywhere. Too bad we black people range from from one extreme to another. It was your anacestors. If you want to blame someone for us being in America, blame it on your ancestors. I bet they never thought that we would no longer be their slaves and have to bow down to them. They started it and NOW we are going to finish it!

Now that "history has been made" and Obama has proven that you can do anything, I just hope that the young black male community will look to him as a role model rather than a lot of these gangster rap stars that wear their pants around their ankles, say the "N" word in every lyric of their songs, and think that the "po po" is the enemy.

Although I completely disagree with Obama on most all of his platforms, I would definately agree that he is a better role model for these kids and I hope he makes the difference for them that everyone expects him to. He is very well educated, well spoken and wears his pants appropriately.

He also appears to be a good father so I would hope that all of the deadbeat dads who run from job to job in order to avoid child support orders will sit up and take notice.

Posted by AllAmerican (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 8:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The issue now is for blacks to ask themselves, "Am I a racist?"
It cuts both ways.
"Do I assume white people prejudge me because of my color?"
What if it's because of something I said or, maybe my attitude?
Do I assume a white person is racist because he or she may act "uppity" or do I simply recognize them a a jerk?

I am not white and true I didn't vote for Obama. Not because of his color, but for what he stands for.
The odd thing is maybe the white people listened to MLK more than the blacks. He said you should judge a man by his charater not the color of his skin.
The black people have been misguided & have closed their ears to his speeches. Obama will be their worse nightmare before 2012.

Hell my ancestors were rounded up and put on reservations to live, hundreds of miles from thier original homes. Some were shot just b/c of the color of thier skin (red). And if you were a half breed lord help you. None of my ancestors were slaves or owned slaves. And for all of you people who say the man is not African-American he is Kenyan find you a globe and see what continent the country of Kenya is in.

toosweet, you may not realize this but in many cases it was black Africans that sold your ancestors into slavery to begin with. Now let me ask you this. If someone murdered your child or parent, would you blame the murderers children? No. You wouldn't. And if you murdered someone, I wouldn't blame your children. I would consider them victims as well. So why do you blame White Americans for something people LONG before us did? I have never in my life owned or sold a slave. Neither did my father or his father or his father.

But I am glad to hear you say that you are "true Americans" now, so I hope that means you will refer to yourself in the future as an American, not an African American.

Ladies and Gentlemen, along time ago I remember when a minority would complain about mistreatment or an injustice and the priviledged would say "if you don't like it then leave and of course we didn't because this is all of ours. I saw were one upset person said he doesn't have a country anymore and that's not so.If you really believe the words of the constitution" that all men are created equal" then you really wouldn't be upset you would jump on board and embrass a chance for a fresh new start. But on the other hand as I read the posted comments I see were my younger generation of Soldiers get there ideals from. After 19 years of military service 4 combat tours, 2 peace keeping tours and 1 Humanitarion tour. I served under senior Bush, Clinton and now younger Bush. The average american has no idea what the truth is because if you knew all the facts and back door deals that go on. 40 % of you would probably live in under ground shelters fearing the worst. Now I don't have all the answers but I have a lot more to offer then the average (Joe)The plummer. American is 300 million strong 83 million are Black 95% of the blacks that voted, voted for Obama 63 million totaled. Out of the total 63 million votes the majority were still white middle class Americans voting for Obama and that says alot about the North, South, East and West. People please embrass change and do your part. We in Afgansitan and Iraq are doing our part to defend and perserve the the rights of all, remember this is big' the whole world is watching to see if those old dogs of hatered rear it's head...

OPEN A BOOK sometime and read about how it was YOUR ancestors who kidnapped YOUR people and sold them to the white man. YOUR people betrayed each other. You got yourselves into this mess. So stop saying poor me poor me missuh white man's the reason for all my problems. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A SLAVE... I haven't done anything to you. My bad for being white!! By the way, my great, great, great, (and so on) uncle was a BLACK slave. None of us are pure of any kind of blood anymore. Like someone said yesterday America is a melting pot, everyone combines together. So how bout we act like it. Why don't we ALL grow up. We are stuck for 4 years of this crap, don't make it worse than it has to be!! Let's make the best of this situation and turn it into something good! Let's all come together and DROP THE HATRED..

Iraqi, some of us are not so eager to "jump on board" because we don't believe in the same things that our new president believes in. For example, I do not believe in abortion and I certainly do not believe in legalizing partial birth abortin or allowing underage girls to have abortions without parental consent. Quite the contrary, I believe we should teach abstinence.

Secondly, many Americans don't have a clue what really goes on because we are only told what the media and the government WANTS us to hear.

I did not vote for Obama and did not want him leading this country because of his beliefs (or lack therof). However, I have already began to pray that he will seek the Lord's guidance on the decisions he has to make and that the Lord will change his heart about issues such as abortion.

hearing the negative comments from both sides of this issue has been the worst part of this election in my opinion. i agree that for the most part President Obama is unknown to our nation. i do not fully agree with all of his platforms but this is no different than any other election. i have never seen one candidate that i fully agreed with on all subjects. what i will say is that this nation elected an american president... black, white, purple, yellow, red... color does not matter, nor gender american is american darn it! some are afraid and there is nothing wrong with the fear of the unknown. sure, not much is known about our new president but i say we give him a chance and see just what he's all about. everyone deserves a shot! as far as the racism i am seeing (from both sides so don't anyone feel left out or special), this is utter crap people. all i am seeing is that if you are black and voted obama you are racist and only voted for him cause he's black and if you are white and voted mccain then you must be racist and only voted for him because he's not black!! please people... is this not old yet?! this behaviour brings me to tears!! i agree that no one that is alive today has been a slave or owned a slave so as americans can we accept that that was a horrible part of our past that soils the beauty of what our nation has accomplished and continues to accomplish and move on as a "whole" nation? there are social injustices everywhere. what is important is whether we rise above or we let those unfairnesses hold us back from reaching our full potential as individuals, communities, states, and as a nation. here's to seeing in our lifetime a woman president or better yet lets make it a quarter white, quarter black, quarter native american, and quarter hispanic woman president... here's to seeing the american dream realized in the eyes of all americans! This post is not meant to offend but offer insite into what potential we waste with our hatred. God has blessed us all and let's not forget that we still are ONE nation UNDER GOD! Let's rejoice in being citizens of the greatest democracy where every person's dreams can become reality with hard word and perserverance! I'll get up off my soap box now!

I hate that some of you still live in the old days! But if you take a hard look at the bible and read Judges it speaks of a man named Barak and he was a leader! The bible is fullfilling itself as the days and years past! Not only in this way but look at our everyday lives! We have kids killing parents brothers turning against sisters and we can't even tell which dam season we are in I can remember years ago around this time you would be bundled up in a coat and gloves. Now you can wear shorts and short sleeves! We need to wake up and smell the coffee and pay attention! This day was a long time coming and I think African Amercians deserve to have a significant spot in history! We have fought too hard and too long to have this moment taken away from us! I don't have a hate bone in my body for no one outside my race I love people I don't treat no one different from the other. I see everyone the same! We need to unite as a nation not as a race or a party we need to become one union, because when we bleed the color of our blood is the same!!!!!!!!!! I love Amercia and I know Obama will make the country proud!

been_there you say you don't have a country anymore, when did you ever purchase a country? But if you are referring to Obama as president of the United States of America is the reason you don't have a country, go buy you another if you can and please hurry and leave. The country you once had will be better off without you. "Out of sight, out of mind". Hurry, Hurry and go catch the first thing smoking or going you way. Praise God you are leaving, please whatever you do, don't return by no means.

What happened to being Democratic or Republican or even Independent? Where does race involve any of these.

I am also tired of race being an issue. Since when do we vote on race? I have ALWAYS voted based on my morals, values and beliefs. All Americans should vote based on their own morals, values and beliefs no matter what. I am so sick of hearing that every person who did not vote for Obama is racist. Unfortunately there are still people who are racist: it goes both ways. Obama is not racist and he would never say that just because someone didn't vote for him they are.

This is 2008, why is it a surprise that a black person is president? It is no surprise, it is no surprise if a woman became president. Wake up people; everyone is equal! Why should whites or blacks be "first" as someone says. Today, Every American: black white, purple, blue, red etc has the same opportunities. HIstory is history and should never be an excuse to whine and complain. Learn from History and move on. I have ancestors that were Jews and were sent to concentration camps, tortured and murdered but I don't whine and complain that I am treated unfairly just because they were.

Someone has to lose an election and since I always vote based on my morals, values and beliefs the people I vote for doesn't always win but I support them anyway. I am glad Obama won; I would really hate to hear the horrible things people would be saying if he didn't. It is bad enough hearing how horrible white people are because they didn't vote for Obama I sure would hate to hear what is said if Obama didn't win. I hope everyone will see that having a black president doesn't change America it is still America: because race should not matter what matters is that we now have a DEMOCRATIC President and everyone still has equal opportunities. Most people are ready for a democratic: it is time (remember Clinton?) Hopefully the whining and complaining will come to a stop and stop saying black president: he is our president for everyone just like any white president would be.

Considering the state of our nations economy, if Obama wants to prove that he is willing to do what is best for the country, then he should forego the elaborate and expensive inaugural balls and celebrations the will cost the taxpayers millions. One of the companies that was bailed out was blasted for having an elaborate and expensive function after everything that had happened, so to me it is the same. Start balancing the budget on Day 1 if you really want to make a change.

Momof1 and meandmy3js, I am a father of 3 and I have 2 sisters so the abortion issue I agree with you but over all. I have to believe this type of different leader is what this Nation as a whole needs. During the mid 90's I would say I was a little more conservative then I am now. But I am far from a liberal also, family values, honesty, loyality and a strong belief is what has endured me for all this time. You see, what your shown on FOX News and CNN pales incomparison to what it is really like to look a parent in the face and hand them a folded flag from a casket of there 18- 22 yr old son or daughter. And try an muster the words " On behalf of a greatful nation" You don't ever want to know that feeling. Especially for a conflict to want to see come to an end. So with this election I have to trust in God and believe thier is more Good, that's going to come from this, then bad. And let me explain one reason why, This country is at a point where we as Americans will never let that cowboy mentality run wild again. President Obama and his adminstration will be held accountible"Believe and trust in that" GOD BLESS YOU TOO! YOU GUYS ARE WHY I PUT MY BOOTS ON EVERYDAY AND DO WHAT I DO!!!Like Obama said in one of his many videos " shake them haters off"

has everyone forgotten the "united we STAND; divided we fall" premise?! are we so jaded that we can not see that, as a nation, the longer we stay divided based on any reasoning we lack the ability to reach our full potential. no we do not always agree on the issues. that is what makes the world a wonderful place... diversity. why is it that in the many centuries that we have been a nation that we still are unable to embrace one anothers differences and try to learn from one another?! anger who i may with this statement but those that spew hatred seem ignorant to me! acceptance is the key to peace and liberty. i may not understand why you believe what you believe or stand behind what you stand behind but i am not so disillusioned that i cannot reach within myself and respect the opinion's of others and at the very least try to understand their side of the fence. once we accept that life is not easy for anyone, that we are put here in this "hell on earth" so that we may rejoice in the beauties and majesty that await us in heaven, life will become quite a bit easier for all man kind. i was raised in a poor family (but we had love and our God) with very few options of the better life (or so i thought) but with iron will and strong faith i can say that i have made it possible for my child to not have to do without. we all have the potential for greatness. there are so many opportunities if we just wake up and realise that we do live in a great nation! not all peoples of the world have free public education (and before we jump on that subject, no it may not be the best education, but it is education nevertheless), grants for college, welfare programs for when times get rough and you need a little help (this is not to say that our welfare system could not use reform because of it's abuse by our nation as a whole), and many many other great things that our nation offers us. before we start to bemoan our situations in life maybe we should access the world around us and praise just how good we have it! God bless all of my fellow americans we know that the road is not always easy and that at times it gets bumpy but we will perservere with or without the nay sayers! and may God doubly bless all those with negativity and hatred in their hearts... may he wrap them in his loving arms and lead them along the path of righteousness by his side... may he bless and keep them and help them to see the positive side of all things and learn from the mistakes that have already been made, AMEN! "at that those times when you only saw one set of footprints, those are the times in which i carried you." HE will never leave or forsake us and it would do some of our nation good to remember that!

I am getting very tired of hearing the reference to the Barak of the Bible. That is in the books of history and would be the same as saying everyone named David is a king, everyone named James is an apostle, or everyone named Jesus (Spanish language remember) is the Christ. That Barak and this one are two different people.
Also, Obama is the first black or black/white to be elected president because as far as I know he is the only one who has ever run.

yep History has been made

I'm proud of our country and I respect the system we have , and the results - Obama is our President and I support him as such now. I voted McCain, I do reserve some skepticism that Obama can actually make good on his many promises.

But I will give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he leads us well

So now we can all put to rest all the racist BS. Our country is obviously NOT a racist country. Now let us all live up to our full potential, and not seek excuses for our failures other than our own shortcomings of effort or commitment. Let us Not seek handouts and excuses not to go to work. It is time to get to work, heal our country and rout out those that would corrupt our way to prosperity.

God Bless America and all of us together as one nation

Yes, I agree with the one that said the black are killing the blacks on the streets, this is very true. Sad, but true. You make me sound as if I hate white people. Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 1:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

but what most of you are missing, and you keep repeating it.....

is your misrepresentation of the facts - we didn't get in this financial crisis in just this past 7 years, Bush inherited a recession from Clinton, who was the joker that repealed the G/S Act of 1939, and in 1999 Obama led the lawsuit against Citibank claiming discrimination against minorities thus forcing the banks to make bad loans, which led to foreclosures, and Barney Franks pushing legislation to force banks to make risky loans to low income people - all this has now blown up on us.

The Bush Administration had nothing to do with these factors that have led to this financial meltdown. The G/S ACt is what had kept the banks from playing the stock market, and had lending laws in place to prevent bad lending practices. This was repealed and the foreclosures will continue, as bad lending continues, and credit cards are leading people to bankruptcy.

The Democrats are much more to blame than Bush (who is a very poor Republican in my opinion, more of a middle of the roader, or he would have held the line and resisted advice from his Goldman/Sachs advisors to bailout the financial institutions)

so it just makes you look ignorant and stupid to blame people for what's going on who had NOTHING to do with it.

This house of cards was set up long ago, although Bush could have acted sooner if he weren't so preoccupied with saving our nation from more imminent danger of terrorist attacks, and natual disasters (the hurricanes). I'd rather have a poor economy temporarily, than have millions permanently dead from WMD attack by terrorists, which as we know from 9/11 would lead to a much more deep and far reaching depression than what we have now. Personally, here local, our economy ain't that bad, I see most people working and doing ok.

At least do your homework and do an honest evaluation of the situation before you start blaming people based on your emotional attachment and lack of understanding of the facts.

If people don't start being honest we will never straighten things out. For instance- start taking personal responsibility for YOURSELF - get your health straight and take the strain off the healthcare system, - get your finances straight and take the strain off the credit system- get your ethics straight and take the strain off the judicial/correctional system -- PLEASE before you knuckleheads break down our nation beyond repair.

Even Miracle Man Obama cannot force you to do right, only you can do that for yourself.

How many of you are holding your breath waiting for that handout from Obama? You know, that TAX CUT that he was going on and on about, code word for HANDOUT. Just wondering..........

Yes God Bless Barrack Obama, he's gonna need it.

What's in a name? I'm Black. I have never breathed African air. I have never sit my bare behind on African dirt. I was born in this divided country called USA. I have lived here for 30 years, and when I die I want to be burried six feet under America's dirt. My skin is soft like butter with a medium brown color. I am a female who is engaged to one of the best hard working Black men that GOD has breathed "the breath of life" into. I have one son and so does he, so together so far we have two wonderful sons. We both work our asses off so we can provide a wonderful live for us and our children, and our future children. We were both born from hard working parents, and we will teach our children to do the same. To hell with handouts. We don't need them. But who cares? We are judged by the worst of us, but we don't care. We just keep living. It actually hurts me to read some of these rude, immature, and unnecessary comments, because it's just not worth all of this tention. We all are suppose to be adults. I think the term African-American should be for the people who are actually African immigrants. If you were born in America and you are Black, then you are American. So when I read some of your comments judging African-amercians, I don't get upset, because I am American. I'm just a Black person.

You are so right it will be a matter of time when they will out in the streets begging. Then where will they get their beer. OOPS I forgot they will steal it.

All of this is going backfire & I can hardly wait to see it.

GodsChild

you make me sick

just because we have a black president now, which is not a bad thing, it's a good thing

doesn't make black people first ahead of anyone else

that is the definition of racism and you are therefore a racist by your statements

you are a blight on your race

we are all equal in the eyes of God, and in this country.

Laughing at the comments on this site. Im a Natchez native and my friends here in Illinois didn't believe me when I told them how racially divided Ntz was. When I was in high school, the white students did not participate in the prom that was sponsored by Natchez High, they would always have their own private prom. Is that still true today. MS will never get ahead until they UNITE as a state. Every state has there issues with race but I honestly believe MS is by far the worst.

I have to agree with you theduke

Bush never tried to have a police state

Closest he came to that I guess would be the eavesdropping on OVERSEAS phone calls to KNOWN terrorists

I guess that's what sentas is talking about?

I guess sentas would rather have terrorists organizing and killing more innocent Americans here in our homeland??

what an idiot that guy is (or is he a she?)

ANYONE HEARD FROM SUPERTRUCKER LATELY?

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on November 6, 2008 at 2:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

no kayce that is not true anymore

there are no white students at the high school anymore

well maybe 10% at the most are white

but black kids are going to the private schools now, the one's whose parents (doctors and lawyers, etc) can afford it

But I would ask you- what is your definition of "getting ahead". To me, I've visited Illinois on a number of occasions, Illinois is in a lot worse shape than Mississippi.

The vast ghettos of Chicago, they last mayor of Chicago ( a black man) is now in prison, the widespread depression of the rural areas of southern Illinois, the establishment of gangs all across Illinois, the meth labs and pot farms of MS13, and all the other gangs........ I know people in Illinois In fact, the rural areas have lost ALL their jobs, the factories are GONE, the people there say this financial crisis means NOTHING to them as they have been in recession/depression for 10 years already. Obama has done nothing for Illinois.

I think Mississippi is actually a MUCH BETTER PLACE TO LIVE, I visit Illinois often, at least twice a year, but I wouldn't want to live there. We don't have near the mess, crime, and pollution you do.

I think you need to check things out before you keep running your mouth and showing your ignorance.

America..repeat after me... It's not all about me... It's not all about me... It's not all about me! Gays want gay marriage. African Americans want reparations. Liberals want abortion rights... but what does God want?

2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

We are no longer a majority "Christian" nation. Sure people call themselves "Christian" but that label is nothing more than an empty shell.

We want to hold onto the USA as a Christian nation for our children's sake since we cannot know for sure how long it will be before Christ's return to claim his people, but I fear it may be too late. Liberal ideals are rapidly spreading throughout this country and the Word of God is steadily being forgotten and worse replaced by other "religions." Yes, Islam is making inroads into American culture, but the scarier cult in our society is, and has been for decades, the New World Order or Universal Church. Obama's beliefs & values are a reflection of that "global" idea and if you call yourself a Christian no matter if you're black, white, green, purple or polka-dotted you cannot equate Obama with the "Christian" values this country was founded on. Where is the president elect going to take this country? To a liberal, global, European, socialist, radical abomination that the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob will NOT bless! Statistics showed 1/3 of "evangelical" Christians voted for Obama. I'm disgusted to know that 1/3 called themselves Christians much less evangelical Christians. And understand, if a true Christian minority ran for president in 2012 and has a chance to win, I'd vote for him any day over Obama or any liberal white candidate.... content of their character (based on Christian values) not the color of their skin!

Obama likes weed and cocaine

so did Clinton, oh but he didn't inhale, yeah right......

the context of that statement was about making criminals out of people for nonviolent crime, filling up the prisons and making criminals out of kids

shows you a little about the character of sentas to try and smear people

anyway I thought liberals were for open borders, smuggling drugs, lax laws on drug use and possession???

what's your opinion on that sentas? do you ever come right out and state your full and honest opinion on anything? or are you only and always evasive and critical ?

Mr. Rogers states “anyway I thought liberals were for open borders, smuggling drugs, lax laws on drug use and possession???”
If you are joking with this statement so be it, however if you are seriously asking a question because you don’t know any better I guess you don’t know any educated American liberals. As an Independent now, and having seen first hand the chaos and indisputable ramifications of “up to this point” open borders, of course any informed voter would be against open borders.

actually...

are there any educated American liberals?? (joke)

thank you 2008 for clearing that up for me

I was wondering, glad we are together on having enforced and closed borders for national security

but our war on drugs has been much less than desired, with the main effect being criminalizing many young adults and putting a great strain on the judicial/correctional system with nonviolent possession offenders. Pot was legal and actually mandated for farmers to produce up until the 20's as it was widely used for medicinal, fiber, and oils, etc. I don't claim to be an expert but............

I don't see the point, just stop the drugs at the border

Ladybug...do you know why a lot of public school teachers don't take their jobs seriously anymore...I'll tell you. (These are all facts) the majority of parents that send their children to public schools are kids themselves and the teachers spend half the day trying to do all of the things that the parents should do when their kids are at home. It is a teachers job to teach not to parent...and it is not the kids fault it is the parents...children are a product of their environment so don't blame the teachers. Teachers and Cops should be paid more than any other job in the world because they educate us and protect us!!! You try doing a thankless job for 30 years only to have ignorant people like you that probably dropped out in the 8th grade insult you and say that teachers don't take their job seriously...We don't take you seriously. I have read and watched tv since the election and have seen the deep emotion shown by my fellow Americans, and it has touched my heart deeply.

We can do the race thing till Jesus comes, but the reality of it all is most folks hang with their own. I don,t hang with the rodeo crowd cause i don,t like rodeos. I don,t mix with brawlers cause i don,t like fighting. I choose to be with mostly people i know and trust. I choose not to be around certain people because i don,t trust them whatever color they are.The ones you could trust bring ones with them or are related to ones you can,t trust. So their it is. Don,t tend to other folks business and stay to yourself and mind your own. If they don,t bother me,then i don,t bother them. And i have the right to comment on anyone of any color.

It's insane that if you make a negative but correct comment about a person of a different race you are branded as racist. But if you do your branded as a racist. If my comments are correct and true and you don,t like it,tough.

Okay, I've been reading all the comments here, and I'd like to add a few of my own.

First of all, I will state that I don't consider myself racist. I happen to be a white female who tries to vote values over race or party.

I did vote for McCain in this election, not because I was crazy about him personally, but because his views are closer to my own than Obama's. The person I voted for in the primary was actually a black Republican preacher and statesman, Alan Keyes, and I would have been simply THRILLED had he won. Not race, but values.

Neither do I vote for a person because of gender. The 1st time Bobby Jindal ran for governor I proudly voted for him and against Blanco, even though she is a female. I would not have been happy to have Hilary for the 1st woman President, but I would have been very happy to see Sarah Palin as the 1st woman VP. Again, for me, it goes back to values.

To me, it is more important that a nominee share my values than share my race, gender, or party. I would certainly hope that a large majority of the 52% did their homework before pushing the button for the President-elect.

The good that has come to me personally from the election, even though I'm not terribly happy with the result, is that I have begun praying for Obama. I hope that the Lord will soften his heart in many areas, and that the Lord will help our country stay strong and get better instead of worse.

Whether you voted because he was black, democratic, or male, you got him, go and celebrate. If you voted for McCain, sorry, you didn't win, but a presidential term is only four years. Dust yourselves off and try again. In the meantime, give this man the opportunity to prove himself. He hasn't even started and you are already speaking on his future failure. Whether he fails or succeeds, we will never know until we give him the chance to do HIS job. If it makes you guys feel any better, McCain won Louisiana and Mississippi, you can just pretend he is YOUR president for the next four years. Have a great day, everyone!!!

Our nation needs to get back to the basics of what it was founded on. We ARE a Christian nation. You CAN'T have God without Christ since they are one (the trinity or triune GOD is three-in-one) Father, Son (Christ) & Holy Spirit.

To look at our history and say America was seen as a place to worship whoever & however you wanted is simply not true. America was seen as a place where God, (not Allah or Buddah or Confucious) could be worshipped. It was freedom to worship God.

Let's not forget that worshipping God was not the only reason people came from England to America. Taxes, low prosperity and government control along with many other social issues were a concern to those that made a perilous, sometimes deadly, journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the North American Continent.

The "global" Universal Church ideas is engulfing our culture. To think that it doesn't matter which "figure" you worship since they're all God is ignorant of God's word.

So notfromnatchez, don't try to leave Christ out of the founding father's ideals, just because it doesn't say "Christ". They understood who the only "God" was!

You might sign your holiday cards, "Merry X-mas", but only Christ could die on a cross for your sins & mine, defeat death & hell and give you a choice to trust in Him to save your soul. That is what "God's" word is ALL about.

I pray you come to that understanding before it's too late, because Christ will return and if you read the book of Revelations in the Bible, you'll know you definitely don't want to be left behind here for a horrifying "tribulation" period.

southerngyrl03.... don't be suprised to see a congressional bill introduced in the very near future to increase the term of the president to 6 years.

Posted by southernwoman (anonymous) on November 7, 2008 at 1:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ace, this is what the 1st amendment to the Constitution says:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Nations cannot worship; I believe people have the right to worship as they choose or the right to not to worship at all.

Personally, I believe as you in the Trinity: God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

it does not matter one bit who wrote the pledge of allegiance. that was not the point i was trying to make. if this is not a christian nation then the majority would not have chosen to honor and adopt that pledge or chosen to put "in God we trust" on our currency. also, some words are so large that no definition or explanation is needed. when we say GOD everyone knows who we mean, make no mistake about that.

ACE--I have read the bible...it is a good fiction book.

This country was not founded as a christian nation. Our Founding Fathers expressed a separation of church and state as well as religious freedom.

James Madison, the father of the Constitution, was a very strong support of religious freedom....not only for Christians, but for all religions. While he attended school at Princeton, he recognized the importance of being diverse and used it during his time in Virginia and then while writing the Constitution.

Many believed in God and tried to express it during the Continental Congres, Benjamin Franklin asked to pray prior to proceeding. Alexander Hamilton, said that there was no need for Foreign help in this process. So guess what...THEY DIDN'T PRAY.

Southernwoman said it right when she quoted the First Amendment.

The Consitution, the law of the land, does not mention GOD at all or any references to GOD other than religious FREEDOM.

sentas, Lenin said communism is just socialism in a hurry. The guy who came up with the pledge was a national socialist, or as Mussolini would have said, a "corporatist" or fascist. He came up with the pledge to condition school children to rally around the flag, envisioning them as the seeds of an industrial and military army. Public education was to be the incubator of socialism and indeed that is what it has turned out to be.

You might be interested to know that modern day black Marxists consider Obama to be a fascist, just like Francis Bellamy; he is being referred to as a "corporate emperor with no clothes".

You might also be interested to know that the modern incarnation of communism was the brainchild of a group of bankers and intellectuals who intended to use it to pacify the masses while they, the "philosopher kings and benevolent international bankers" ran the system and lived according to their elite, Darwinist (Calvinist or Torah) inspired position of natural superiority.

This same group and their descendents were influential in the American Revolution and wholly responsible for the French Revolution.

Some of the founding fathers were Christians, some were not. We probably would never have had the Bill of Rights if not for the Christian sentiment of men like George Mason of Virginia. Some of the most influential of the founding fathers, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson were Deists who did not accept the divinity of Jesus and these men were very close to what we would think of as communists or at least socialists today. Our history isn't a black and white thing, it is an amalgam of ideas that were often at odds with one another.

Thanks for the information ace, I wasn't aware of that but my mind is on something greater than this life on earth. Some may argue that what I believe in doesn't exist and they have every right to, we have a freedom of religion or lack thereof. Presidents, governors, or mayors do not affect me, because I have my own book of laws, rules, and regulations. I try my best to live my life accordingly so that I may enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. If what I believe in doesn't exist, I will go to my grave knowing that I died trying!!!

Rather than getting into a dither about the pledge of allegiance or prayer in schools, I believe we should be teaching math and science, self-respect and respect for others, anger management, how to be assertive without being aggressive, and how to deal with difficult people.

We who believe in a Higher Power can teach our children to pray throughout their school day - very empowering!

No matter what your political convictions are this is an eye opener....

What a thankless people we are!!!

David Letterman, on President Bush. (Surprising)

David Letterman wrote this; it's the David we don't often see....

'As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been,

but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.'

'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data

I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the

direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with

the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy

and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking,

'What are we so unhappy about?'

A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more

food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean

to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state.

F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way

that can provide temporary shelter?

G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the

world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and

provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital..

I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group

of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to

extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or

prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come

to defend you and your family against attack or loss.

L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and

pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that

are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.(con't)

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen.

No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see

us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain

about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking

the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out?

The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who

guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy

out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book

for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The

commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you

so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good

things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused

you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful

behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve,

and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country.

They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general''

discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'

discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in

bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids

selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit

corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying'

them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to

write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage.

Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad. (con't)

We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or

at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides,

flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the

threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the

Pledge of Allegiance?'

frog...thank you for verifying the author of the email you received...I notice on snopes that it has been attributed to both Jay Leno and David Letterman.

However, the identity of the author of the email is not the bigger problem.

The article itself is a piece of evil propaganda, suggesting if I do not support President Bush's war and policies that I am an ungrateful brat and, further, that I do not support the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The statement about the press allowing O. J. Simpson to publish a book is so over the top, I don't know how to respond to it.

A free press is one of our most valuable national assets.

I just don't read any of that into the letter. I read it as meaning we in America have so much to be thankful for, why on earth are we so discontent? Everyone wants every little new electric gadget, everyone wants instant gratification in everything, no one wants to save for what they want - they want it now. And the children of today are the ones who will suffer for it. No matter what you think of him now, the reality is that Bush did a lot for the country in the early years of his Presidency. I hope Obama will be able to pull the country together - even though I don't agree with him and didn't vote for him, I am willing to give him a chance to see what he can do. I voted for McCain simply because I liked his platform better. Some people voted for Obama because they liked his platform better. Some people voted for Obama because he is black, as much as some people voted for McCain because he is not. SOME people saw this as an issue of race, and cast their votes accordingly. I know of many who said they voted for Obama because he is black...But...is Michael Jackson white just because of the color of his skin...? Nope. Anyway, you catch my drift.

I have been called selfish because I do not want more of my tax money to go to those who do not deserve it. yes there are some who need help, but there are a lot more than that who just want a free ride. Regardless.

I do not like the fact that Obama is going to be our president, simply because I do not agree with his ideas of "change," but there isn't much we can do about now, is there? Now we just need to move on, and fend for ourselves, and we'll see how this plays out. Part of me wants Obama to fail as president, just so I can say "I told you so," but then again, part of me wishes I was oh so wrong, because I do not want to live in a third world country, which is what I see happening to the USA. But, as I said, there isn't anything we can do about it now, but just try to survive. None of us on this comments section are EVER going to agree with the other, and so it might be best to just stop arguing. Kapeesh?

To momof1:

Why should president elect Obama forgo his Inaugural ceremony. Why should the first ever elected black president throw away what all other presidents before him have enjoyed. This is history in the making and he may never get this chance again. Shame on you for even suggesting such a thing. I wonder if you would be suggesting this same move had McCain won.
