Seventy-nine year-old Gloria Gibson speaks on the old days and future at the “Year the Dream Became a Reality” celebration at the Roxie Town Square Saturday. The event was held in honor of President-Elect Barack Obama.

Franklin County residents gather to celebrate history Obama has made

Published Sunday, November 16, 2008

Roxie — History was the focus of a celebratory rally in Roxie Saturday.

Franklin County residents gathered on the town square of Roxie to recognize the history that was made with the Nov. 4 election of Barack Obama as the president of the United States.

Organizers also used the event to celebrate the history of the racial barriers that have been torn down in Franklin County.

Event organizer Felencia Dyer said she wanted to educate the youth of Franklin County about their past and also show them what they can accomplish.

“We wanted to highlight the progress we’ve made since integration, and recognize the figures that were integral in integrating Franklin County,” Dyer said. “We want to educate our youth on what has been done and give them hope for what they can accomplish.”

Dyer said that the Obama’s election shows children that their dreams can become a reality.

“After 9/11, my nephew saw images of the planes crash into the World Trade Centers, and they really disturbed him,” she said.

“He woke up the next day and said ‘I’m going to be president one day and Osama bin Laden isn’t going to blow things up.’

“Now his dreams aren’t too far fetched.”

Dyer estimated that more than 300 people had attended the rally at some point during the day.

Speakers at the rally were prominent community members and leaders.

Dyer said having familiar faces telling their stories helps people better understand the message of hope.

“The speakers were people that they have known from Head Start up through graduation,” she said.

“If they see what they have done they may understand it better than hearing a national story.”

Myra Bonds Williams of Natchez, formerly of Franklin County, spoke at the rally about her experiences at Franklin County High School.

Williams was the first black cheerleader for the school and was a member of the 1973 graduating class that had the first integrated prom.

“I wanted to tell my story so that people can see how far we have come and how much we can still accomplish,” Williams said.

Williams said the recent election was one indication of the progress that has been made, and she wasn’t too surprised when the election results indicated that Obama had won.

“I thought it would happen because Barack had a plan for change that brings all people together,” she said.

Very good article! I think the thing to remember is most will celebrate this time in history, a few will not. No matter what side of the coin you're on, President ELECT Barack H. Obama will be sworn in in January as the President of the United States of America.

I really wonder how many blacks voted for what he stands for as a president elect or because he was black. Oops half black.
My reasons for not voting for him were because I think he is full of bull & leading the black & white people astray. Time will tell & let's pray to God he's being honest.

@ Hitchcock - How many whites to do think voted against Obama just because he was black? Please spare us with your obvious racial discontent over our President-Elect.

It would have been impossible for Obama to be elected without the white vote. That I believe shows that the whites have crossed that barrier. But to read that 95+ percent of the blacks voted for him says one of 2 things. Either most blacks are racist or their ungodly. No CHRISTIAN (TRUE) could have voted for Obama because of his views on abortion and gay marriage. So if your one of the 95+% blacks tell me what you are? I have the unmost respect for those blacks that voted because of their convictions and not their color. Thank you. The rest of you have a long way to go and the shoe is on the other foot now. O BUT I FORGOT, ONLY WHITES CAN BE RACIST.

Obama is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA for all people.......We all must remember that God is in control and when God does something it is well done we just have to remember that we can not do 'NOTHING' or "ANYTHING" without God. .....

Someone made the comment that "true" Christians did not vote for Obama because he is for abortion rights and gay marriage. That is a very bold statement and extremely judgemental. I happen to know many Christians (I don't know if they are "true" - who does?) that voted for Obama. There is nothing worse than a HATE-FILLED Christian.

Everytime someone will try to make a racial issue out of Obama's election, I will remind them that he is not black. The Kenyan government has his father listed as an Arab African, not a Black African and his mother is Caucasian. He is half Arab African and half white. There is no "black" blood in the man. I think that the African American population needs to let go of race. They have become the most racist culture overall. I read where a black man from Poplarville (posing as a white racist) sent racist e-mails to black students at ULL and LSU telling them they would die because they voted for Obama. He said he wanted it to be a racial issue. Now who is being racist?

Why was my comment removed. Everything I posted is the truth. You take that down yet leave up some of the other falsehoods and bigotry I constantly see posted on here?

My main question still stands. To the people saying Barrack is not Black. If you saw him in public without knowing him what would you say he is? My skin tone is way lighter than Barrack and I am also half white but still considered a Black man.

As to the comment of swapmeet. To say that Blacks in America are now the most racist culture in America is pretty ignorant on your part. America in general and the South in particular was built on slavery and the outright intimidation and exploitation of Blacks even into these present times and you expect there not to be any ill will toward our white brothers and sisters. Surely you live in a Utopia.

Everything in America is a racial issue it always has been and always will be . Swapmeet how what in your mind makes a man a Black American ? If Barrack is not African American then who is? He is the child of an African who resided in America and a White American woman correct....

Like I say I love the Natchez area but could live without a whole lot of the people that live there....

Again....Black President , America finally living up to some of it's rhetoric ..... those that don't like it....Love it or Leave it.

There was no prom at FHS in 1973! Just like there was also no annual and a lot of other things the school no longer had after 1970. If you can produce an annual from 1971-73, I will pay you good money for it because these were the three missing years. Go to the FHS hallways and look for the composite pictures of the graduates for these years. You won't find them. It was a time of change and for whatever reason the administration thought it would be easier to not have these things.

Also, before integration the "black" school in FC was newer and better than the "white" school in grades 1-9. That was Lilly Mae Bryant. Guess the color of the people that made that happen. I was in ninth grade in 1970 when integration occured and it was just another day to me meaning that it did not bother me that there were suddenly black students in the school. My parents taught me to respect all people. Mississippi still has a bad image from people outside the state. Check out the news where many of the hate crimes are occuring against African Americans -- Maine, Ohio, ect. Yet we still have the bad image.

Iconoclast your population statistics are correct and I also agree with your comments regarding those statistics . As a minority group in this country the black vote did not get Obama in office . Believe it or not folks , those votes came from whites .

Obama is not an African/American in the traditional sense as viewed by most Americans . Michelle Obama is an African/American . She is the descendant of slaves brought over from Africa . The majority of traditional African/American blacks have this one feature in common with Michelle Obama . Be it Jesse Jackson , Sharpton , Micheal Jackson , etc . Barrack Obama is unique in this sense . He is not the descendant of slaves brought over from Africa . His ancestors were never slaves . He is far removed from this experience . He is what you would call a true African/American .

Why not just be "Americans?" On the one hand, some say that the color of a person's skin should not be an issue but yet ironically enough, they make an issue of skin color when the word "African" is used. Many black people I know don't want to be treated differently because of skin color but yet they want to distinguish themselves because of their skin color relative to culture, tradition, etc.

Lookingout you are in fact correct on one point and wrong on the other. No all Blacks were not slaves there was a very small percentage that were free as well as an even smaller percentage that even owned slaves. That however was the exception to the rule and not the rule itself.

As to whites being slaves you are incorrect. Some whites came here as indentured servants as did some Blacks before the real rise of the slave trade here in America however the difference became that while white indentured servants usually worked their tenure and were freed as specified in their contract Blacks increasingly were not. No whites were ever brought here from another country or continent in chains as a slave.

Slavery has been proven to have a lasting effect on both American White as well as Black modern culture. Not to even mention the lasting residual of slavery as shown in Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and the overall bigoted perception of Blacks by Whites brought on by slavery. How long ago was slavery really I'm 4 generations out of Slavery in Mississippi. Only 4 generations. It's easy for mainstream White America to say never forget the twin towers but on the backside tell Blacks as well as other minorities to forget the misdeeds done against them in the past. You can't have it both ways .

Either we all forget everything that happened at any point in the pass or we never forget anything. What was worse the towers dropping, slavery, the jewish holocoust, the treatment of the Irish when they first came to America? who is to say what should be forgotten and what shouldn't .

All I know is America was built on slavery which in turn led to a population of people losing everything that made them who they were. It also led to the government of the U.S. passing laws that made it ok to discriminate against those former slaves. Even up until the intergration experiment of the 60's and 70's and the government led influx of drugs and guns into Black and low income communities during the 80's and 90's. It is silly and downright irresponsible to even hint that something which lasted as long and was as dehumanizing as slavery wouldn't have an effect on future generations. By your logic the Jews and Palestinians aren't affected by what their forefathers did. Are we as Americans not still affected by what our forefathers did in this country or is it that we should only be affected by what is conceived as positive and forget all the negative.

Regardless everyone is entitled to their opinion and on this I have no problem agreeing to disagree.

I am writing in response to all of the negative comments made in reference to this article. The first issue that I want to address or the people who write that blacks only voted for Barack Obama because he was black. First, all of you should recognize that Barack Obama was not the front runner in the black community when the election first started. As a matter of fact it was Hillary Clinton. And I think that everyone will agree that she is white. African Americans did not jump on the band wagon until we knew how it felt about relevant issues. And of course he is an inspirational speaker. Noone in their right minds can sit back and say that Barack Obama did not run a good campaign or that he was not an inspiration to us all. But for all of you who are saying that Blacks only voted for Barack because he was Black need to watch CNN or Fox News a little more. And as far as the article itself is concerned, African Americans have the right to celebrate such an accomplishment. The problem is those who responded negative to this article don't like the fact that we are celebrating, because the only thing that you want to see in the paper in reference to blacks is negativity. Yes, America has elected their first AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT, and yes we are proud. One thing for sure, we will never forget where we came from. Right there in Franklin County or in Adams and Jefferson County, blacks were lynched for trying to vote. Churches were burned. For years we were held captive as slaves. Three hundred years of free labor. For three hundred years we toiled, and were taught to fight each other. Our women were raped. Oh, we will never forget the path we have taken to get here we will never forget the many lives that were lost. So if we want to celebrate the election of the first AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT WE WILL. And one last thing. Barack Obama was not elected because of the Black vote alone. We only make up about 12% of the population. Therefore there were many whites that voted for him as well. He was elected by all americans. And he will be a president for all americans. I think that the citizens in this area and all over the south, need to get out of this dream they are living in. If you look at the election results, you will see that McCain took the South, and thats just about it. It seems that whites in other parts of this nation were willing to make a change. The only persons still set in their ways is people down south. And of all the states in the south Mississippi had one of the tightest races. Therefore, some of your friends who claim that they were all for McCain must have went into that polling booth and made their mark for Obama. Anyway, I voted for obama for all of the right reasons. And it wasn't hard considering the state of the economy, and how bad of a turn this country has taken. Considering that it appears that the nations choice was pretty easy.

Obama was elected because he is a bright man. He was educated at Columbia and Harvard and was a professor of constitutional law at the Unicersity of Chicago. He is a gifted speaker who rose up from a modest background. He reminds me of Bill Clinton (the most capable leader of my generation, despite his flaws).

Capable. Intellectually impressive. Hardworking. That’s how I describe him. That Obama’s father was from Kenyan is almost irrelevant. He was elected because of the person he is.

jaquan32 are you for real? "Three hundred years of free labor. For three hundred years we toiled, and were taught to fight each other."

Where do you figure the labor was free. Did the slaves not receive clothing, food, shelter, and health care when needed? Yes, I know there were some slave owners that were abusive but the majority were not. Why would a person spend anywhere from $500 to $1000 on a slave and then abuse them. You need to do a little more research on the slavery issue before you continue to march to the same old drum.

I do not agree with the old Jim Crow politics but that was not brought about by slavery. Those policies were brought about by Reconstruction. Which by the way is still continuing in the South and is one of the reasons so many people still feel this hatred or disgust because the rules don't apply to the northern states.

Anyway, it is not black people that some of us dislike it is people that still have the slave mentality of the let the white man take care of me, only now we or society don't get the labor just the trouble.

Mississippi Red - evidently you didn't listen in history class to the story of early resettlement of prisoners (white English people) in Georgia. Also, you might give some thought to those indentured servants who, trying to make a better life for themselves, were terribly mistreated. A goodly amount of them died or were unable to develop their own lands because of what happened during their indentures. Cruelty and mistreatment are not the province of one race and no one race or ethnicity is perfectly wonderful in their treatment of their fellow man.

Some of you need to reread my post. When I mentioned slavery it was in reference to the celebration that was held in Franklin county. Any common sense person can see that slavery is not relevent to the election. Nor am i using slavery as an excuse. I was using slavery as an example of the progress that all Americans have made. Not just African Americans. Now as far as the last post goes, well the ignorance in that post speaks for itself. I wasn't using slavery as a present day catalist for African American, but how dare rebel4ever try to sit back and justify it. Anyway everytime a black person mentions the word slavery someone has to respond that we are using that as an excuse or comment on the relevancy of it all. We don't forge the Kennedy assisination, we don't forget the revolutionary war nor the civil war You still have battle field reenactments. And look at the city of Natchez. What is the main object of its Tourist industry, duhh slavery. People spend millions of dollars a year to visit the way it was during the good ole days of slavery, and you all have the audacity to get mad when a black person mentions it. PLEASE!!!!! We don't forget the holocaust and it is still talked about, so what the hell is wrong with a person discussing slavery. Goodness, and you took my words all out of context. I feel so sorry for rebel4ever. My God, how backwards can you get. I know we can find you at the nearest klan rally. Reconstruction is still going on, are you serious. You need to go drink a beer and settle down.

I suppose you didn't hear Michelle Obama's speech when her husband, Barack accepted the Democratic nomination to run for President. In it she stated CLEARLY and EMPHATICALLY, she and Barack WORKED HARD for what they have obtained thus far and NOTHING was given to them. How is it you can even believe this man is going to let people sit on their a@#es and get money, when they clearly stand for and believe in hard work?? The world's diamond markets today are almost entirely supplied by the diggings in South Africa, where the discovery of diamonds was so recent as 1867. Children are accredited with the finding of the diamond in South Africa. A Boer farmer, Daniel Jacobs, had a farm near the present town of Barkly West on the Vaal River. On the river's strand were many glittering and coloured pebbles, the only playthings the Jacobs children could get; these pebbles included carnelian, agates and many varieties of quartz, semi-precious stones of some value if cut and marketed in far-off Europe. Among the pebbles which a little son of the Boer farmer brought into the house was a small white stone which sparkled so in the sun that the vrou of the Boer farmer noticed it, although she did not care sufficiently to pick it up, and only mentioned it to a neighbour, Schalk van Niekirk, who asked to see it. The little white pebble had been thrown out, but the children found it in the dust of the yard. Van Niekirk wiped the dust from the stone and found it so interesting that he offered to buy it, which occasioned some mirth, and it was given to him. With a vague instinct that the stone was unusual and had some value, Van Niekirk subsequently asked a travelling trader, John Reilly, to see if he could find out what it was and if anybody would give any money for it. Several merchants in Hopetown and in Colesberg examined it, said it was pretty, and one thought it might be a topaz, but none would give a penny for it. Reilly might have thrown it away but for a casual exhibition of the pebble to Lorenzo Boyes, a Civil Commissioner at Colesberg, who, experimenting, found that the pebble would scratch glass, and seriously said he thought it was a diamond. A local apothecary, Dr. Kirsh, of Colesberg, hearing the discussion and examining the stone, bet Commissioner Boyes a hat that the stone was only a topaz. The stone was then sent for determination to the leading mineralogist of the Cape Colony, Dr. W. Guybon Atherstone, at Grahamstown, and it was so lightly valued that, to save a higher postage rate, it was mailed to Grahams-town in an unsealed envelope. The expert reported to Mr. Boyes: "I congratulate you on the stone you have sent me. It is a veritable diamond, weighs twenty-one and a quarter carats, and is worth five hundred pounds. It has spoiled all the jewellers' files in Grahamstown, and where that came from there must be lots more. Can I send it to Mr. Southey, Colonial Secretary?"

Anyone who doubts Obama is a socialist should visit www.change.gov and read through the agenda. By the time he gets done most people will be working for the government in one of his many newly created government jobs, or serving in one of his new corps at home or abroad, and if they aren't doing that they will be serving in one of his volunteer organizations. And all this is going to be done by lowering taxes on the poor and middle class and increasing them on the rich. And all this is going to be done while insuring that even more industry flees from the U.S. to avoid the carbon cap and trades he promises to put into effect in order to decrease greenhouse emissions by 80% by 2050, a silly global scheme dreamed up by some withered old communists in Rio who teamed up with eugenicists descended from the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas and some deluded English loyalists serving in the U.S. government.

Yes, this is a thrilling moment in American history. An unknown senator with Marxist dreams and the charisma to carry them off now holds our executive office which has been given dictatorial powers by the current administration by simply uttering the word "emergency". The One, The Messiah, Hercules, President of the World.

One thing about, openly embracing communism will be a change for the U.S. Until now we've had to pretend it was something else. What about this new Domestic Homeland Security Force that is just as large, just as powerful, and just as well funded as the current military? Isn't a domestic army something real to be afraid of? And what about this Universal Voluntary Service? Universal and Voluntary? Is that the very essence of double-speak?

There are very few african Americans in the US. If you were born in the US, you are American. (or to military parents serving abroad) My husband has enough Indian blood that he has a number, but considers himself American. I have quite a bit of Irish in me but don't consider myself Irish American. I am only American. I refuse to recognize those labels unless you truly came from that country and went through the process of becoming a citizen of this country legally.

And to all that fill out a document, job app., census, etc., I have begun checking the "other" box under ethnicity. Just to make a point. Won't that throw statistics off. LOL!!

With a "black" president now, where does affirmative action stand now in our country? Seems the man didn't hold Barack down. All comments are welcome!!

I read all of these comments, and I wanted to say something, but instead I just shook my head.

Some of you need to grow up.

I agree with babev1! its about time to let the slave issue go. Lincoln freed the slaves over 70 years ago so let it go! Another thing is the racial issue should be gone! If anyone is racist then the percentage of blacks that voted for Obama is proof that blacks are just as racist as any other race. There was a survey done with Obama voters and the reporter quoted McCains Policies and said they were Obamas and the people of Harlem agreed not knowing that they were agreeing with what McCain campaign was all about. This is proof that blacks only voted for Obama bc he was black. There has been a guilt put on white people because of slavery and now since Obama is president it should be taken off of us. It isnt our fault that people chose to have 3 kids and drop out of school and not do anything with their lives. So now when someone is sitting at their house drawing welfare and complaining that "the man" is holding them back, remember now that the man is black and u have no excuse!!!!

I have to disagree with u Teach4peace. Yea, they preach about hard work but if u honestly sit down and think about it, where did all the money come from? He went to a community college in California then when he finished he took a trip and went all over the world. After that he started Harvard Law. Do you know how much Harvard Law cost? Seems like to me he has had everything given to him and Im not even gonna start on how he got his 1.7 million dollar home in Chicago.

He's a lawyer - probably not that uncommon for a lawyer in Chicago to have a 1.7 million dollar home - they make a lot of money! Maybe he got scholarships to Harvard - it's obvious that he is very intelligent - maybe he had a ton of student loans - who knows - but you DON'T get to where he is by being lazy. I actually agree with Teach4Peace on this one - I think he is going to hold those with that "give me something for nothing and you owe me you owe me" mentality to a higher standard.

No comment on affirmative action and where you guys think it stands now?

Posted by Rk2120 (anonymous) on November 17, 2008 at 5:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Im not saying he's lazy and yea he does seem very intelligent but if he was the same person with the same background but a different race then people would say he isnt qualified. Anyways to what MSviaTN said, how can he hold those people to a higher standard? Im just curious. Until we quit giving people welfare and handouts they are not gonna change by my opinion. What could he do to make them change?

"What could he do to make them change?"

Perhaps inspire and give them some hope that they can have a better life!

Abe Lincoln owned slaves, A lot of slaves were owned by wealthy people who lived in the Northern states, also wealthy landowners owned slaves, but very few if any working people owned slaves and didn,t have any affect on what they did or didn,t do..Actually the Civil War was not fought over slavery,it was fought over economics.

He probably had a lot of Pell grants,You don,t have to pay them back.

Poor souther families, farmers, laborers and hunters, fisherman didn,t fight for any slaves because the didn,t have any. The fight was with and about the rich and economics. Why would a poor southern farmer fight to keep something he didn,t even have..makes no sommon sense.

It had a lot to do with money. All wars do. You don,t how things would have turned out. The North won because even though we were winning the battles, the north just had more good and manpower to replace the troops, but we didn,t have the manpower so we got our butts whipped..I still don,t like Yankees for the most part. They think some of still don,t have running water and are stupid rednecks.A lot of them are nits and don,t know squat about living in the south. It,s a intirely different world than the north. It,s easy to tell the south how to do and what to do,and how they should do. I got a brother=in-law that does that all the time and he ain,t worth a dip diddle either. He,s got just enough sense to know he,s stupid. If the civil war was about growing up i don,t want to ever grow up.

I know how some yankees think and what they say. I served during the iVietnam war with some yankees,i ate with them, slept with them and heard all their malarkey. Their lives were totally different than ours.

If your school that you graduated from won a championship but you had been gone for many years, you would be proud even though you don't know anything about the students, the teachers, etc. It may be the worst school ever, but yet you are still proud because you have a connection. That is how African Americans feel about Obama -- for better or for worse. I can understand the excitement they have for him being elected. Time will tell if the excitement is justified because he is a good president or if it was just empty emotion.

Posted by presby (anonymous) on November 21, 2008 at 9:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Their excited because the freebie list will get longer and they think they can get away with more and more. If Obama doesn,t give the minorities what they want fast enough, they will turn on him.
That,s their lot,it,s the mindset they are taught from youth.Work the system.
