Extended warranty scam strikes Miss-Lou

Published Wednesday, October 1, 2008

NATCHEZ — If you receive a phone call about extending your cars’ warranty, it could be a scam.

One Miss-Lou resident received such a call and was being pressured for information on the vehicle. The caller hung up when asked how they got the phone number.

Strange phone calls like this should always be ignored, said Jamie Howard, with the Better Business Bureau of Mississippi.

“If it doesn’t seem right, then call us,” she said. “People should never give out their Social Security number, or any kind of banking information over the phone.

“People usually can tell when they’re being scammed.”

The BBB gets all sorts of calls about scams, and has seen similar plots before, Howard said.

If someone ever has a question about a business they should call the BBB for information, she said.

I've been receiving these calls since last year on extending the warranty on my cars and I did the same thing. I asked them how they came about my phone number and the lady, who you can tell was following a script, lied and said I had stated I was interested in extending the warranty on my vehicles. Folks, most extended warranties are SCAMS, even the legitimate ones. After they finish counting the repairs they WON'T cover and the monthly cost for the extended warranty, you are better off keeping up the maintenance on your vehicle and addressing any needed repairs in a timely manner. This will prevent the need for those very expensive extended warranties.

Not so, Teach....my car went in to the shop a month after the regular warranty expired and luckily the extended warranty paid all but $50.00 of a $2000.00 transmission repair....paid for itself in 1 visit to the shop.

That's in your case. I know 10 other cases where the exact opposite happened.
