Dumpster dog recovering nicely
Published Thursday, October 2, 2008
NATCHEZ — Balancing on spindly, shaky little legs topped off by a round stomach and big honest brown eyes, the dog found in the Dumpster hardly appears to be the same Chihuahua mix brought in last week.
But it is.
The dog, estimated 6 months old, that was found locked in a pet carrier in a Dumpster at Village Green Apartments, could hardly take an IV when it was brought to Natchez Veterinary Clinic on Friday.
After a little while, he began to eat and drink some but his personality was one of distrust and agitation, said Nan Garrison, Natchez-Adams Humane Society board member.
“He’s a happy fellow now,” she said. “He’s much more agreeable now than he was.”
While he’s put on a little weight, which is evident by a fist-sized stomach, he still has a ways to go.
“He is still severely underweight,” Garrison said. “He’s got several weeks to go before he could be released by a (vet.)”
As far as being up for adoption, it’s still a wait-and-see situation until the canine is better shape, said Pat Cox, humane society director.
“We want to be sure that everything is OK before we put him up for adoption,” she said. “We want to give him time to really mend.”
This includes seeing an improvement in a heart murmur that was detected, but it’s believed it was a result of being so anemic.
Once he gets stronger, it should fade, Cox said.
And already he’s made vast improvements.
“We’re so thrilled over his progress because we really didn’t think he was going to make it,” she said.
Garrison said she already has a waiting list six people deep for the dog.
The pup — who still is without a name — was found by a maintenance worker at Village Green Apartments, when he though someone had thrown away a pet carrier.
When he fished it out, he saw there was a dog inside and called the Natchez Police Department, animal control and the humane society.
The dog is thought to have been put in the Dumpster between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
The humane society is offering a reward for anyone with information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the party or parties responsible for this crime.
Garrison can be reached at 601-445-5698.

I hope the little one has seen all of the bad times in his life and goes on to become a spoiled pup with a wonderful family.

Amen Riffian 1964! I'd like to take the slimey individual who did this horrible act, and put him in a cramped cage, lock it, and throw it in a dumpster in some remote spot that he/she would not be immediately found. Some one who did this, is capable of doing it to a small child, etc... SICK!!! They need to be locked up!

Yes, thank you for the update. I've been wondering about the little fellow. So glad he is doing well. Hope they catch the sociopath who did this to him.

Anybody that can do that to an animal is not fit to be around. People mean to animals are mean to people.

Just a reminder, there are lots of wonderful dogs for adoption at the shelter, as well as plenty of cats. If you wanted to adopted the dumpster puppy and don't get to , please consider another puppy or even an adult dog. They have lots of love to give. Thank you.

THANKS BE TO GOD AND THE STAFF AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY.
Keep in mind, the SICK individual that did this will slip up and do something else SICK. We might not get to see them get punished, but they will reap what they have sown.

Thanks ND for the update. It's really nice to have a happy ending in these days. I hope when he is adopted the person is checked because I would hate for him to go to an abusive home. After what he's been though he deserves the best.
freedom42, is right if he's not the one there are many more at the shelter waiting for someone to love them.

I walked through the other day and they are really packed at the shelter. I would urge anyone considering a new pet please give them a chance. One aspect I have found over the years is the mixed breeds we have gotten have had far fewer medical problems than the full-blooded ones we had.
Remember they can always use donations of cleaning supplies, crates, leashes, pet bowls, aluminum cans, and newspapers.

What a wonderful letter 3on23! I could not agree with you more! Thanks for reminding me of taking supplies, bowls, etc.... that is great advice, and something we all need to be reminded of.... I will definitely drop off some of the items you mentioned above....

Thanks to everyone who helped save this beautiful 'lil creature--the maintenance worker who found him, all the workers at Natchez Veterinary Clinic, the staff at ND, Nan Garrison, and all of us who have been praying for him! He's another miracle I've witnessed. Several years ago we had a little 5-month old puppy who contracted the Parvo virus. If you know anything about the disease, you know that there's not much hope once a pup comes down with it. We took him to the vet and he told us there wasn't much he could do. We knew we had to do something, so we began to pray, literally! He looked so pitiful and he was so weak that all he could do was just lay there; even too weak to hold his little head up. We prayed that evening and the very next morning, folks, he held his little head up and even began to eat a few bites and drink from my hand. Slowly but surely, he recovered miraculously from this fatal disease and lived a long, healthy life that filled ours with so MUCH love and joy! He's gone now, but our lives have been truly blessed having him there in the midst of it. This little chihuahua-mix is also a miracle, I firmly believe it. He may have a good ways to go, but he's going to bless someone's life. I just know it!! He already has!!!

Has anyone received information on how the pup ended up in a dumpster box, in a pet taxi? Could he have possibly been left behind by a Gustav or Ike refugee seeking refuge in the Natchez area? It just seems so odd to me that a pet carrier was involved.

Sometimes people will buy a puppy on impulse, kind of like a fur coat or a car, then discover how much work it takes to raise one, housetrain it, etc. Maybe mom got the puppy for the kids and dad disagreed - that's how my daughter got her Boston Terrier. But it was horribly cruel just to throw the puppy away like so much trash. Ads for free pets are free (or they used to be) in the ND, the shelter would take it with no questions asked. We've had puppies and kittens literaly thrown out of cars at our home, and I have a hard time turning them away. Guess that's why I have so many!
PLEASE, have your pets spayed or neutered if they are not breeding quality pure breds. Don't let your animals have "just one litter" so the kids can see the "miracle of birth" cause it usually happens at night and all they see are the puppies the next morning. Guess I'm just about preaching to the choir here, sorry about that. But if you do have a pet you don't want or can't keep please don't just dump it, have some compassion.

hey freedom42, good post. Being the pet carrier was involved, maybe someone found the pup and thought he was too far gone to help. They may have even feared prosecution themselves for having him in their possession. I would love to think human error or lack of knowledge was the primary contributor to this situation instead of blatant cruelty. Glad he's doing well. I'd name him LUCKY.

crackbaby...Lucky is a good name, we used to get these well bred puppies and we had the worst luck with them.We live off the highway and you'd think they would be safe.Well we lost several due to insurance men accidently runnig over them.Pay all that money, get them their shots, dog house, give them a good name get attached and then they would get run over.So we ended up getting a mixed puppy we named her "Lucky" she lived 17 human years before she died.We do have her off spring her name is "Lady".She is 15 human years,we have a boxer who is 3 human years and he watches over" Lady" ever step she makes. Both go to Church with us,and they love to sing it's really funny! They sit on the side of the Church and we can here them when the cut lose.

He BOBCAT, that's awesome. I'd try to get in touch with one of the pet video shows. You might just have some singing celebrities on your hands. lol
