Franklin County wins fight over Jefferson County

Published Saturday, October 4, 2008

FAYETTE — Both Franklin County and Jefferson County were looking to rebound after tough losses in Region 7-3A action last week. The problem was, they were facing each other Friday night and the loser would end up with two losses in region play.

At the end of a game that lasted more than three hours and ended with some controversy, the Bulldogs held on for a 23-20 win over the Tigers to improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in region play.

After Jeffery Collins threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Kiwaski Tenner, and then added a two-point conversion pass to Myron Young with 2:26 left, Jefferson County trailed by three points. The Tigers’ defense held and they got the ball back with 50 seconds left in the game.

Jefferson County looked like it was going to get its signature win of the season to date on a 90-yard touchdown pass with three seconds left. But the play was called back after the referee penalized the Tigers for illegal motion.

“The ref called it back after the receiver caught the ball and scored the touchdown. That was the turning point in the game,” Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said. “I’m not saying that’s how we lost the game. We had opportunities to win the game. That was a big call. That’s a tough one.”

Franklin County, on the other hand, was relieved to get out with a win instead of falling into a hole in region play with an 0-2 record.

“This puts us back in the mix,” Bulldogs head coach Trent Hammond said. “We were able to run the ball and overcome some penalties that negated some great plays.”

The game was also a battle of the Collinses at quarterback — Jamie Collins for Franklin County and Jeffery Collins for Jefferson County. And neither signal-caller disappointed.

Jamie Collins led the Bulldogs’ running game with 18 carries for 172 yards and two touchdown runs. His 15-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter put the Bulldogs ahead 23-12.

Jeffery Collins had 16 carries for 65 yards, including a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter, and completed 10 of 26 passes for 202 yards and the long touchdown pass late in the game. However, he was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety and two points for the Bulldogs at the 8:35 mark of the second quarter.

“I wasn’t surprised. We watched some film. We did some scouting. We stayed balanced,” Herrington said.

The key to Franklin County’s win as Hammond pointed out was extra points. Jace Carlock was 3-for-3 on extra points while the Tigers went for three two-point conversions, but was successful just once.

“Defense played well enough to win. We gave up a few plays here and there,” Hammond said. “Their first scoring drive, we missed nine tackles in the backfield.”

Jefferson County (3-3, 1-2) actually outgained Franklin County 320 yards to 312 yards.

All I got to say is way to go refs. You got us again. How can you sleep at night after cheating kids. You call back a game winning touchdown on a so called illegal motion. Shouldnt the play been called dead. Like I stated in the last article. Something has got to be done about these refs. That same guy was in the barborshop talking crap about our team. Talking about how we cant compete with these teams and how we are out coached. I heard it with my own ears. Because i argued that we can compete with anybody in our district and how the junior high program has helped. And the weight room. But he was convinced and continue to down our school. And this is the guy we want calling our football games. I dont know if anything can be done but someone needs to look into this. Two weeks in a row we have had winning touchdowns called back. Pretty Fishy if you asked me.

Let me start off by saying FC has an excellent ball club. Good run game. But ladies and gentlemen the game tonite was not won on da field but rather won at the hands of certain grown men in zebra striped shirts in which the head one made some very questionable calls. Its such a shame when grown men take it upon themselves to influence the outcome of a kids sport. One in particular who I know used to bet on ever sporting event that come through, we all know him he usually restocking at our stores and schools. The same ref that was in the local barbershop badmouthing the JC's ball club and the coaching staff a week earlier. Wonder how much he had on this one. I feel bad for the kids but Ican rest assured that JC and FC gonna meet again, next time it won't be with a bunch of local official(s) but some on the state level. This still was a good game but this is the type of thing that can happen when we play a team close, officials get a chance to make a difference. Hopefully FC wins every other game they play excep

An epic battle on the gridiron, with the outcome influenced by the officials. Keep your heads up Tigers. Great defense when you had to have it ! Great offense in the clutch. Poor officiating when it counted most! hats off to both teams.
Go JCJH ! H.C. way to d up !

I don't know who this ref is, but why is he allowed to continue to ref games if he obviously is betting on the games he refs and publicly bad mouthing JC?

I would like to conratulate the bulldogs on your win!!! It was a hard game on both side but both sets of young men played with all their heart. Both side had calls that took away touchdowns and some calls that were not made at all.
I would like to say how upset i was last night after leaveing the game and having to drive thru downtown Fayette and having some guy step in front of my Van yelling nasty words at me and my girls and hitting my van. I will never attend a game there again. Its sad when your no longer safe at a highschool football game.

Posted by TRON601 (anonymous) on October 4, 2008 at 10:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

From being around football for so long, I know that when there is an illegal shift, the play is SUPPOSED TO BE BLOWN DEAD upon recognition, and not WHEN THE BALL CARRIER IS 90 yards down the field. It goes to show you what is going on here. Its no secret. Research it if you dont believe me. But this goes to show you what is really happening in the 7-3A region. I would take this game to review at state level. Thats the problem, people. We shouldnt be afraid to challenge stuff like this at the top. Its also obvious that the fans in Fayette and Natchez feel the exact same same way about this type of stuff. Not taking anything from the Franklin County team or coaches because they all have their purposes, which are to contend and win.

But as we all know, the zebra always got snapped up by the crocodile and dragged into the Nile River at one point.

Hey refs, you can take that to heart, since you guys have the heart to cheat these kids like that.

JC, keep your heads up because you WILL be in the post season. You know where you stand.

Tigerfan you are correct . Your school administrator or even the coach could file a formal complaint against continual bad officiating of games thru the misshsaa.com . Those people at Misshsaa only respond to numbers . If enough people show something will definitely be done .

happyjudy,
In reference to your comment, I would like to say how upset i was last night after leaveing the game and having to drive thru downtown Fayette and having some guy step in front of my Van yelling nasty words at me and my girls and hitting my van. I will never attend a game there again. Its sad when your no longer safe at a highschool football game."

I am sorry you feel that way about this athletic event, but the incident you described was approximately a mile away if you were in downtown Fayette, and not at the football game. So it is not fair to say you didn't feel safe at the football game, there was adequate security there. I am also curious as to why you were directed downtown when everyone else was directed to the Highway 61 bypass, we were and we live in Fayette. The traffic was not congested and the bypass is an easier access out of Fayette. I am also curious as to what touchdown you say was called back on Franklin County, the three (3) that FC made were on the scoreboard.

I don't know a hell of a lot about football, but it was obvious that an official would not wait to make the kind of call he made after the touchdown. But as the saying goes, what comes around goes around, that official will have his day. I agree with TRON601 and pride, the MSHSAA should be made aware of what happened, they should be allowed to review the film. My husband has informed me that it will not change the outcome of the game, but the official can be reprimanded. It is also my understanding that the same thing happened last week. If JC doesn't do something to change this behavior, it will continue.

I am not taking anything away from Franklin County, JC made mistakes, and bad calls were made, but I would have preferred that we just lost the game instead of being cheated. It is still beyond me how a grownup can treat children that way-- their actions sends the message that it is alright to lie, cheat and steal.

Posted by OldGoat (anonymous) on October 4, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, next time they won't call the FC touchdown back that would have made it 30-12. The next crew will not call holding after the play is over and FC gains twenty yards and a first down, forcing FC to punt and let JC get the ball back. Next crew won't call holding to call back an FC 1st that would have run out the clock. But I quess they should have called that one but let the one on you go. Two men in motion should never be calle.

THE TOUCDOWN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IS THE ONE WHERE THE ONE WHERE THE BALL WAS BATTED IN THE AIR BY JAMIE (#1) & INTERCEPED BY DEHENDRETH COLLINS(#3) AND RAN IT BACK 96 YARDS FOR THE TOUCDOWN WAS CALLED BACK FOR A BLOCK IN THE BACK. THAT WOULD HAVE MADE IT 30 to 12 WITH 5:26 LEFT IN THE 4th. SO I ASK YOU WHY MUST WE GO THROUGH THIS EVERY WEEK. THE ONLY REASON YOU ALL HAD A CHANCE WAS BECAUSE OF THE CALL AGAINST US. YES THAT'S A HELL OF AN IDEAL / SEND THIS GAME TAPE TO THE STATE FOR REVIEW AND WATCH HOW MANY ILLEGAL SHIFTS & FALSE STARTS & FACE MASK CALLS THAT WERE NOT CALLED ON JC. LOOK JC HAS BEEN A GOOD RIVAL GAME SINCE I WAS PLAYING. DON'T LET NATCHEZ PEOPLE LIKE "TRON & PRIDE " MESS WITH YAL HEAD. BY THE WAY ( OAK GROVE 49 NATCHEZ 20 ) DAMN CHEATED AGAIN HA! HA !HA!

Suthungurl19,
Since you are yelling, it seems that you might have your big girls panties on, but they must either be too tight, twisted, or in the wrong place. We are not whinning, but we would like to be treated fairly-- just as you would.

mississipppime, since the officials obviously cheated on both sides, that's even a better idea to let the MSHAA become aware of it. Then, just maybe then, we can all receive fair calls and let the children do what they do.

I felt safe and fine at the game but its not good on yalls town if you cant make it out of there. I was not the only one who had to call 911 just check their report. I know it happend away from the school at Zippy Mart but the yells were still about the game and race. Im proud to be the Mother of a Franklin County Student. What do you want the MHSAA to declare JC the winner. Forget about the FC td called back, forget about the fact that JC played with 12 on the field 3 different occasions. Once on a punt that would have given FC a first down to run the clock out. The refs were the best friend of JC last night. The offical on our side made a call that had to be called. Two in motion- no way to avoid it. I guess we should all send films to the MHSAA every time our teams get beat. Last week FC got a bad spot- a 9 yard gain became a 1 yard loss- ruled no foward progress. Would have given us 1st down on the tylertown 13. Get over it and quit crying the refs did what they could for you. The last call was a have too, they had no choice. But you think it would have been better to no call an illegal play and cheat the FC boys, than to call a true penalty and cost JC. WHO WOULD HURT THE KIDS?

I cant believe the reactions and comments that were made about this article. All was said that the game was poorly officiated. And comments like these were posted. It must be a BLACK public school and Jefferson County people are stupid. The purpose of this comment section is to comment on your concerns and if you would like to support your team and community. But to call people stupid because a couple people felt we got unfairly treated. How can you just stereotype a entire county for being stupid. That shows your intelligence. I want stoop that low to call you stupid for your comments. Because to make a comment like that you show your true colors and your true feelings. I have been out all day and didn't see you post until now. I still say I am sorry that you were treated that way, and as in any small MISSISSIPPI town, we encounter problems and racial disparities. I am not a bigot and don't like to see racism practiced on any one else. I support my team, I am from Jefferson County and as an American, I feel that I also have the same right as any other American citizen. The Constitution gives us all freedom of speech.

To linda,
Stupid is as stupid does-- I hope it made you feel better.

Classylady i know its not your fault and for the town as a whole i have worked with many young women and babies from there but i have to say i have never feared for the safety of my children as i did Friday night. There are a few ladies that i helped from there that i call DEAR friends and would do anything for them. I stated earlier they made us turn left but it was a right hand turn they made us take out of the gate on the left of the school. I know feeling can run high after a game but it should never be took that far where I could have hurt someone or they could have hurt us. I still wish the Tigers the best in the rest of the season. I cant blame the kids for jerks like the guy who caused me problems.

Posted by drawpaintsing (anonymous) on October 4, 2008 at 11:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Is this how fellow rivals are suppose to act? I was at the game Friday night, and yes I feel that we were cheated. Maybe bad calls were called against FC as well, but why are we are getting trashed and judged, because we are concerned about our team. We support and stand behind our team wholeheartedly, just as you all. What's wrong with that?

To my understanding, LINDA, us stupid Jefferson County people aren't the only ones who feel the same way. So, are you calling Natchez fans the same? What gave you the right to even call us stupid? I was always told that "Game recognizes game", in other words, "stupid recognizes stupid." Therefore, you have to have some ounce of stupidity to even notice that we are. Really, is this how you act when you don't agree with someone else's views? I mean really, do you call your children and loved ones stupid? If you do, therefore you just maybe as stupid as we are.

Go Tigers! From a proud and "stupid" Jefferson County fan

Posted by linda (anonymous) on October 5, 2008 at 8:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

OK not all u are stupid. Just some. And yes, the Natchez people know as much about football rules as JC. Now what about the sewage thats running all over the ground on the visitors side?

Posted by OldGoat (anonymous) on October 5, 2008 at 9:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The receiver on jumped before the snap. The flag was thrown immediately, it was over before it was thrown. Tough break for JC but the rules of the game must be enforced. I believe the officials tried to insure a JC victory but that this one was too visual to overlook. Why aren't you talking about the fact that JC got to run a play with no time on the clock at the end of the game. This should only happen with a defensive penalty. So there is another try to give JC the win. YOU FIELD, YOUR OFFICIALS, so quit crying.

Posted by drawpaintsing (anonymous) on October 5, 2008 at 10:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

All of you Franklin County fans are getting the wrong idea of what we are trying to say. We are not crying about the team, but we are concerned about the officials that we have. But I guess you all have your minds made up about us anyway. These are the same officials that called for us when we played South Pike. I wasn't there, but I was told that some of the same things happened there. We aren't talking about you all like you are us. I have supported for Franklin County, for many years, all the way to the state, even when we didn't make it. But what do we get from you all? .....a bunch of nasty insults.

As for you, Linda, I don't think we are aware of the sewage problem. I don't go over there. I stay on the home side. Since you were a visitor, then maybe you should call the health department. If is gets resolved then I would applaud you personally. So, to answer your question about "What about the sewage system?", you got your answer.

Posted by OldGoat (anonymous) on October 5, 2008 at 12:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

People blame the officials, blame the MHSAA, blame whoever you want. But your coaching staff can ban two sets of officials per year from calling your games. That helps with getting unbiased official. But all I see from the JC crowd is how the officials stole the game. That is a farse.

Posted by Classylady (anonymous) on October 5, 2008 at 1:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

linda,
In response to your first comment, stupidity is in every community-- yours, mines, and everywhere else. Since you obviously are commenting to the posts made by the fans from JC, you are calling all who have posted from JC, stupid. Since we all act in an unintelligent and careless manner at some time or another, I could also preceive your comment as stupid, but I don't stoop that low-- people have a right to their opinions. In reference to your comment about JC knowing the rules of the game, my husband was a coach and even though I don't personally know football, I do trust his opinion. That said, I am interested in knowing where you received your credentials. On the sewer issue, I wasn't aware of the problem either, but if you are aware of the problem, then you also have a right to complain. This is obviously a health issue that only the Department of Health and the local government can resolve.

OldGoat,
From my understanding the officials are chosen by the MSHSAA and, just as you are upset that a bad call was made on FC, we have the same right to be upset as you have. I still say if the MSHSAA were made aware of the unfair practices of the officials, maybe this would not continue to happen. Be mad, call names, talk smack if you must, but nothing will ever be done as long as we gripe here, things are changed through people speaking out.

First off, i would like to say that both teams played a good game! Had me standing up wondering who was going to win until the very last second...

But, i do have to agree with mississippime. Franklin County did have a touchdown called back just like JC did. We were standing up in the stands happily screaming after that touchdown just like JC were happily yelling for their touchdown. Both teams were dissapointed. Why the FC touchdown was not mentioned in this article, I cannot even begin to imagine.

I back all teams from the South, and whoever makes it to State, i'll be rootin for ya. However, since FC is my hometown and my younger brother's on the team, I have to say "Go FC! Do it again!"

BtflWman06,
Your comment validates my point, if officials are making bad calls they should be exposed and properly reprimanded. I hate to see cheating and unfairness during sporting events-- it's not fair to the children.

By the way, I just learned that the official that made the bad call against JC is from FC. I also learned that there were a lot of bad calls in the game between FC and Natchez.

I too support all teams from the South, I supported FC last year when they advanced to the State and will support them or whatever team advances this year. By the way, I hope it's JC (smile). GO TIGERS!!!!

The officials are approved by the MHSAA but not asigned by them. Their is a local guy that does that. And your coach has the right to keep to groups from calling any games. I don't think their was cheating to make FC win. The only reason there is a controversy is the officials didn't make the right call when the play started - the reciever jumps - whoulsd have been blown dead no play no throw no touchdown no controversy. But the officials didn't follow the proper procedure. I first thought it was the defensive choice but I called a friend of mine who is a retired ref and he said it should have been blown dead.
THATS THE BAD CALL- THE PLAY DIDN'T HAPPEN. THE REAL ILLEGAL PART IS THE ACTION OF THE PA ANNOUNCER

Classylady,

I don't know who told you that the official who made the bad call against JC was from FC. But whoever it was told you incorrect information. 4 of the officials were from Natchez (including the white hat) and the 5th was from Brookhaven. For the past two years, there has been only 1 official from Franklin County in the southwest association.
He was in Brookhaven last Friday night and at McComb when FC played Natchez. Most of the officials are from Natchez, Brookhaven, and McComb. Forget about calling the MHSAA to complain about officials. They will just laugh at you. But if you really want something done to improve the officiating, here is what you can do.
1. Go talk to your head football coach. Your football coach is the only person outside of the MHSAA officials' circle that the head of the Southwest Association will talk to. Your coach has a scratch list and a preference list that he turns in to the Assigning Secretary each year. On his scratch list, your coach can list the names of the officials that he does not want calling his games.
I can assure you that scratch list is honored.
2. Talk to some of the guys in your town and all across the area who know about football to get involved and become an official.

Thanks OldGoat and Dawgs89 for the information.

Old Goat, my husband, who is a former coach, also said the ball should have been blown dead at the beginning of the play and not after the touchdown was made. I also know that all we have done here is blown off air, the real decision as to what will be done lies with our coach and the superintendent of education. As far as moving on, the coach probably doesn't even know about the comments made here.

I do think that whatever is done in any situation, can be handled in a civil manner, reframing from bigotry, name calling, and insults. I appreciate the manner in which you two have posted your comments.

Good night and may God bless you all.

Great game didn't expect that outta fed but they did it again. The program has come a long way because I can remember when I was around 7 or 8 and Jefferson County couldn't even put up a fight with FC NTZ South Pike and the other power houses in the surrounding area. I played for Coach Herrington in 07 that was his first year as Head Coach and I think he is doing a wonderful job with the program keep it up TIGERS!!!!
