Natchez can't overcome big Oak Grove first quarter
Published Saturday, October 4, 2008
NATCHEZ — In the end, 42 first half points by Oak Grove was too big a hurdle for Natchez High to overcome.
“We got off to another rocky start,” Bulldogs’ coach Lance Reed said. “We dug ourselves in a hole.”
The Warriors put 14 points on the board in the first quarter, starting off their thrashing to the Bulldogs with a 50-yard pass to put themselves in scoring position.
The Warriors then added another 28 points to gain a 42-7 lead going into half time.
Reed said the Bulldogs beat themselves, especially on turnovers. Natchez High quarterback Javon Washington threw two interceptions. The Bulldogs also had a fumble on a kickoff.
“Starting off in that manner just really puts you back,” Reed said. “We’ve got to give ourselves a chance to be in ball games, especially against good teams.
In spite of his two interceptions, Washington went 16 for 28 with 134 yards in the air and had an additional 74 yards on the ground.
The Bulldogs hope to learn from the loss and regroup before they return to Tom F. Williams Stadium next week.
“We’re going to go back to working and ready for Brandon next week,” he said. “It’s going to be a key district match-up.

Alphamale I read your comment about Natchez . I agree that they should break off into smaller neighborhood schools and compete in a smaller district . Even 1 and 2a classifications . It's no longer about sports in Natchez but education . Making sure student get a good education should be our main focus in Natchez . Sports is optional .

I understand grades and work is more important than football but they don't need to feild a team if coach reed can't get his team to compete with other other 5A schools.

Something to think about - Natchez.
The people of Natchez are their own worst enemy. Until the black folks and the white folks learn how to get along and live peacefully together, people like alphamale will continue to ask the question...Why can't Natchez High compete? I'll tell you why. Most of the white athletes in Natchez go to Cathedral, Trinity, and ACCS. The reason most of them go there is because their white parents would be scared to death to send their kids to the public schools. Then you have a descent number of good black families that send their kids to Cathedral so they can avoid the drugs and violence at Natchez High. Then you have Trinity Episcopal offering scholarships to non-episcopalian black athletes because they have found that that is the only way they can win championships in the MPSA. Then you got poor little rediculous ACCS who is just a Trinity want-a-be. If the officials in the Natchez public school system would crack down on descipline and get rid of the thugs, and all the kids that go to Cathedral that are not devout Catholics, and all the kids that go to Trinity that are not Episcopalian would return to the NPS system, you then would see Natchez not only compete, but dominate.

"Dawgs", you do have an excellent point and a few bad ones. If you look at the test scores along with report cards and discipline reports then you will see the real reason NHS doesn't compete well in 5A. It is not the coaching staff or the size of the players, it has everything to do with accountability and commitment. Sad but true.

Dawgs89 your point is valid and factual . This is exactly what happened after the school merger . Natchez is fully competitive in other 5A sports , football just seems to be their Achilles Heel . It stands out like a sore thumb .
