British man remains hospitalized

Published Thursday, October 9, 2008

NATCHEZ — A British businessman is being kept in a medical coma and had to have a piece of his skull removed after being knocked down outside Doc Big Love’s Saturday.

Alexander John Whyte, 50, remains in critical condition, and police have been in contact with the Brtish consulate and Whyte’s wife.

Doctors at University Medical Center in Jackson were surprised that being pushed down would cause so much damage.

“The surgeon told the wife that he didn’t see how that could be from a push, but blunt force trauma can do that,” Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said. “If he hit his head on the curb, that could cause that much damage.”

Whyte was trying to re-enter the bar to make sure he had paid his tab at about 12:15 Saturday morning, when he was pushed down after bumping into another patron, Godbold said.

“The guy, without looking just pushed him back” Godbold said. “It’s just a horrible accident is what it looks like so far.”

Police have not been told about any fights at the bar that night, and have heard that Whyte and his friend caused no trouble.

“(Witnesses) commented that he was nice, he was polite and they were impressed by his British accent,” Godbold said. “He was drinking, but he was in a bar.”

Police are still investigating the incident, and have not identified the man who pushed Whyte.

If it was an accident, as police have heard, they do not expect to pursue charges, Godbold said.

“If there had been a fight, he could face charges, but we have no evidence that it was a fight.”

Whyte was still in critical condition as of 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.

I'm glad to know there has been an update on this man. I had gotten word that he had passed away but I am SO glad that he's still doing well. My prayers are still with you and your family Mr. Whyte. Get well soon!

this is so natchez. you cant go to any bar without running into someone looking for trouble.

REALLY sounds alittle suspicious doesn't it? Just to simply push a guy and now this? Wonder if the guy who pushed did anything to help after seeing what he had done?
My thoughts and prayers are with this guy.

The clubs ( for lack of a better word like DUMP) in Natchez try not to call the police when there is trouble because it makes them look bad. They just try to deal with it on their own. So I don't doubt for a second that this guy was jumped on inside the club and then thrown out. After all he's different and apparently that doesn't go over well here. Our prayers are with you.

Welcome to Natchez Mr. Whyte. Tell your friends what a great time you had.

Where is this club located? (I'm not a clubber, so sorry for my ignorance.)

Posted by pbnj (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 8:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Since the surgeon thinks that just a fall would not cause that kind of damage maybe someone should point out another possibility would be a steel toe boot.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 8:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

At one time I was under the impression that a couple of people that commented on this actually were intelligent. After reading comments today its clear to me yall comment on things that you have no idea about. First of all red the bars now have to close at 2 like 90% of the country, they used to could stay open all night. Second pbnj, the man was in a bar drinking do you actually believe someone chose to shove this man down just b/c he is British? The town that dreaded sundown what are we in Natchez? Vampires

Posted by pbnj (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 8:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The problem is that I am intelligent in what goes on in these clubs, and I am allowed to make assumptions of possibilities since the surgeon did not think that is all that happen to him.

Posted by pbnj (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 8:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

campbell
it is located on main street, right in the heart of downtown. So probably this man was paying up to $200 a night for his hotel but someone neglected to inform him of the people that JUST PUSH when you JUST try to get in the bar.

I agree with you 100% pbnj! Something rotten in Denmark on this one.

pbnj, Have you ever been in Docs? I didnt see you comment on the bus accident so where is the concern for local citizens? You seem so concerned about someone you dont know and dont live here. So ill make the assumption that you are just nosey and anti bar! And if its the tourism you are concerned about remember a lot of them like to have a drink and the stay up later than the chickens.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 8:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Also have you ever considered the man was drunk? It doesnt take much to make a drunk fall!

Posted by lambchop (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I just have to add my comments -- you guys (sorry gals) are so negative about everything that happens in Natchez. Get out of town and leave it to us who love Natchez.

Accidents happen all the time and everyone who goes to a bar for a drink is not the "gang" type individual. Lots of people go to drink, dance, chat with friends and make new friends. I don't go to bars but I did when I was in my 20s and 30s but don't like the noise and atmosphere.

I would imagine if I were in Britain I would enter a bar to see what theirs is like, for comparison, as well as for the drink.

Bars, alone are not the problem, but the people who have too much to drink and/or are bullies. You know some people are just plain bull-headed and I think some of you are too.

Everything that comes down the pike you blame it on Natchez. So just LEAVE.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 9:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

hey you guys are not being fair, you are jumping to conclusions about aggressive behavior from our local Natchezians that has no foundation of fact.

if you fall backwards and hit your head on concrete you can die right then and there, or some object on the sidewalk, such as a planter or lamp post. It takes 150 lb of pressue to crush your skull, if a 200 lb man falls back on a somewhat point object, that's plenty force to kill him. If he fell off a step falling backwards and in a panic stiffened up and fell with force on his head instead of sitting down, curling up, and rolling to protect his head, that would easily explain the injury.

I've broken my arm from a fall not more than 4 feet before. I've seen head injuries on a gym floor from falling back, and when the head bounces, you know serious injury has occured.

14 lb of pressue will break your knee

the first article was about how this guy was shoving his way into the bar, someone shoved back............

If you're going to hang out in a sports bar, and you're with a rowdy crew and maybe have some communication differences , you need to be careful about insulting the locals, some people don't take kindly to abuse, not that this guy did that, that's just commonsense.

I hope this "gentleman" recovers and I wish him well

Speaking of intelligence, before you insult others you should know your facts. Bars in Natchez do not have to close at 2 AM. They are allowed to be open 24/7.

Don't come on here antagonizing people for speaking their minds. You may not agree with their opinions but they are entitled to them just as you are. Get off your soap box this morning and take a happy pill!!!! Looking forward to reading more of your OPINIONS!

I wish somebody try to push me while i'm drunk,ya'll gone be on here making comments about me,I wish somebody would put they hands on me,it's gone be the last person they put them on.

Firered, they really lucky that the clubs don't open 24/7 cause It will really be a big problem, they'll be talking bout the man who got drunk all day before the club and after the club.

1 day me and my friends was drinking some MOONSHINE aka BOOTLEG and my friend fell and got back up and started doing the MC.Hammer dance, and we told him to go to bed and this fool turned around and drove all the way to Baton Rouge.

This is the nicest and cleanest bar in town. The owners invested several hundred thousand dollars into a fallen down old building. The dump is Dimples. If you have doubts go into both places in daylight. I am not a loyal patron of this bar, I have been three times. There are hundreds of people in there everyweekend and one incident. Some people are acting like this is a ever night occurance.

I hope the Doc Big Love's bar sent some flowers to this mans room, or did something nice for him. He is in a foreign country and probably without loved ones around him...it would be the Christian thing to do to let him know that people care.

Can you imagine the liability claim on thier insurance.

Posted by firered (Elizabeth Geter) on October 9, 2008 at 11:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If you are not a loyal patron how do you know that this is not an incident that occurs all the time?? It might not be to this severity but it happens more than you realize, not only in Docs but in every bar in Natchez.

Now, my main issue is all the people who got on here the other day and were saying this man was dead as though they knew it to be factual. When it comes to things like that if you do not know it to be true don't say things like that. There are a lot of "what ifs" that come to mind. Like what if his family couldn't get through to the hospital and came on here to see what happened and read he was dead when in all actuality he was not. That's not something families need to read. Basically what I'm saying is Opinions are ok on here... Facts w/out basis are not. Especially in this type of situation....

**Gah I'm such a party pooper today... Sorry :(**

Posted by GMS4844 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Doc's is the best bar/club in town, so the people on here who call it a dump must not have spent time in it.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 11:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

So if your stickin to facts why the comment about this happening at ever bar in Natchez? You must patronize all the bars to have all these great facts. So can you tell me how many people got shoved at Docs this past weekend? However I do agree with you on people posting as if they know all I will be the first to admit that I dont I am just highly opinionated.

I have been in every bar in this area and I assure you no bar is immune to these things happening. Anytime you introduce alcohol into a situation there is no telling what may happen.

My personal opinion- I've been to Docs. I very much dislike that place. I haven't been back nor do I plan to ever grace them with my presence again!

That wouldn't surprise me Hardcorps. A friend of mine was beat up that same night outside of a bar downtown (either Bowie's or Under the Hill) for being gay. He never said anything to the guys who did it... They just called him names and beat him up... Some people just have no respect!

re British man remains hospitalized

I have read many of the comments wishing Alex Whyte well, and others less kind. For your information, Mr Whyte is in very serious condition in Jackson, and may not recover from his injury. If anyone knows what truly happened, please let me know. I think surgeons know what can cause particular injuries rather better than policemen do.
Thank you

I've heard that this man was attacked unprovoked inside of Doc's and that he was taken outside to avoid liability by the bar. If anyone was witness to this I would hope they went to the authorities or the newspaper. Maybe if you saw something you can post to this forum too.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 1:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The liability of the bar extends to the street trust me I am an insurance agent and have insured many like places so just removing him does not remove the liablity. And I am not defending the actions of any rednecks or brits. My point is none of us know the facts and probably wont ever. If the man recovers he could shed some light on the subject if not o well Mr. Laird needs money too.

Posted by Beale (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 1:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mr Whytes alcohol level was measured at 1.2 at the hospital. The driving limit here in the US is 0.8. Mr Whytes alcohol level was nowhere near double the driving limit & this clearly shows that he was drinking responsibly. The police say that he was extremely intoxicated - this simply was not the case. Mr Whyte & his friend were just trying to have a nice evening out in Natchez.

My thoughts go out to his family.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 1:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Beale 1.2 is just as close to being double as it is the legal limit. I simply dont understand why citizens of Natchez are defending a man from Britain who went into a bar and got drunk. Think about it since none of you know the (pusher) it could be one of yalls relatives.

I am going to Doc's this weekend me and my friends and wish any Redneck fix their mouth to say anything,Me and my fellow friends from Dumas gone tare the whole club up and wish somebody say something bout it.I don't what done got into these people in Natchez, but i guarantee these Buckshots gone solve it.The last person who put they hands on me ain't have a chance to tell it.

Hardcorps, don't worry about it if I run into them this week i'ma be the one to start it,Me and my friends get drunk and talk and laugh and makes jokes about everybody we see,

And Doc's is not the best bar in town,Ya'll must haven't been to the hole in the wall yet,Lil Wayne and Lil Boosie suppose to be there tomorrow.

Posted by firered (Elizabeth Geter) on October 9, 2008 at 2:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That all depends on the proportion of body weight. Was the guy who fell small or large, as well as was the pusher small or large... I'm pretty small so a simple shove when I'm sober will send me flying!

"If the man recovers he could shed some light on the subject if not o well Mr. Laird needs money too."

That was pretty harsh. I'm not trying to be confrontational with you or anything. I'm just trying to understand where you are coming from.

I had been at the bar earlier for private CD release party, and on Sunday evening spoke to a friend who stayed and witnessed the incident. He has made a written statement to law enforcement, and below is the gist of his statement.

Mr. Whyte was standing close to the edge of the sidewalk. He seemed to overbalance and in an apparent attempt to right himself reached out and grabbed for the nearest thing, which happened to be the shoulder of another patron. This person turned around and pushed Mr. Whyte away (if someone grabbed me unexpectedly I'd probably do the same thing). Mr. Whyte fell and hit his head against the curb. When the person who pushed him down realized how seriously he was hurt, he took off down the street. According to this witness, who had heard this man talking to friends, he was also from out of town. As Kroger pointed out, it does not necessarily take much to cause a serious skull fracture. A man from our church died last winter after slipping on wet concrete in his garage and hitting the back of his head.

Prayers are with Mr. Whyte and his family.

I know what the police have to say about it, I also know what people saw and whatever. We may not ever know what REALLY happened that night. well i know a guy that got the same blunt trauma done 2 him sat nite outside of dimples by 4 young punks who fight like little girls but i didnt see anything about that in the paper. when he went 2 the hospital they said that the area of the skull looked liked the one from the nite before. he was rushed 2 umc but luckily hes home and okay now.

Ok I can't keep quiet any longer on this topic...Number 1 Doc's is the only "club" that I will visit because of the NO FIGHTING policy taken on by its owners...for those of you who don't know the only real fight that I have ever seen break out in there was ended in seconds, the lights were turned back on and the party was shut down long before 12. You can't go anywhere and mix people from different walks of life and alcohol and not have a few disagreements...at least people aren't getting shot like on the other side of town!
As for the rumor mongers in this town...one of my very good and trustworthy friends saw the entire incident from beginning to end...what happened is that the british gentleman grabbed the man infront of him trying to steady himself from falling and the man in front didn't know what was going on so instinctively he turned and pushed the man (thinking that he was being grabbed in a fight). The british man fell, hitting his head on a car and then the pavement. In my opinion and horrible accident and be sure that my prayers as well as everyone in Natchez are with you and your family sir. I am sorry for what happend to you.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on October 9, 2008 at 5:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Did it occur to any of you that My Whyte might be an investor of some kind in town to scout the possibilities of
bringing an industry, business, etc here? I don't know that, just an idea. What an introduction to Natchez from some of you.
Also, look at the username of "oldshool" NOT "oldschool". There are 2 different posters, one keeps pretty cool the other stirs up trouble.

Godbold said IF he hit the curb. He was attacked, and I swear the cops told me he was dead.
regardless, I heard from people THERE that described the man that did the attacking.

I went in Doc Bigloves, and all the people there are Dimples old customers. It was like a big dimples reunion.

Posted by sayitloud (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 9:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

So Godbold says he actually TALKED to the guy that did the pushing right?......even though someone else on here claims he saw the damage he did to the Brit and ran down the street, so how did they get him? AND why not CHARGE him with something especially since he apparently did wrong and RAN? Sort of a hit and run. They don't let you get away with those these days do they?
Also you have to believe for the man's survival that he will make it and can actually tell what really occured.
Something is seriously suspcious with this entire event.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 9:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why is it suspiciuos? There were more than a dozen witnesses and they all say pretty much the same thing.

Posted by natchezrepublican (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 9:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I really can’t believe this town…it is full of conspiracy theorists. It seems like some people just want something to be “suspicious” to get them through the day. If you want to live in a town with some excitement move to the south side of Jackson. This is not CSI Natchez people!!! Like aak said, everyone that saw what happened is saying the same thing. Let the police do their job and I promise it will all come out in the wash.

Posted by firered (Elizabeth Geter) on October 10, 2008 at 9:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What is wrong with conspiracy theorists? Everyone needs a little excitement in their lives. Some may just get theirs from thinking about all the what ifs.

Posted by natchezresident (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree it's suspicious. The original story had the comments disabled for a while. And, the stories are NOT that everyone saw and is saying the same thing. Go back and reread both articles. And my friend walked up the street when the ambulance was at Doc's to see what was going on... they were INSIDE working on the man, not on the sidewalk. They came out of Doc's with him on the stretcher. Any EMT's out there to verify what they found when they got there? And why hasn't the person been named that did the pushing? Other possible suspects in situations are named whether the facts are fully known or not. And, what about Mr. Whyte's friend? What did HE see?

Posted by natchezrepublican (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 9:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If people need excitement they need to get a hobby...go skydiving or something, don't assume things to make the situation more attractive just because their life is boring.

Posted by aak1972 (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 10:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I tell you what i will clear my position. I dont care if Docs closes the doors tonight and never reopens. I dont care if Mr. Whyte lives or dies my life will not be affected by either! I was peeved at the assumption that this had to be foul play b/c there is no way a British man would ever get drunk and lose his balance or be able to walk into a bar and not get jumped on by a crew of hating rednecks and that all the witnesses are liers. If you wanna sit around and make these assumptions put your suspicious mind to work and become a detective.

I remember walking out of docs that night and seeing him lying on the ground with people around him and someone trying to check and see if he was okay. I didn't even know until yesterday that it was that bad.

Well thanks fire just b/c of the difference in opinion does not justify name calling. However some people think that is the best way to get a point across. An opinion is valuable to onesself. And we should all be able to express it. I just wish some bloggers would think before typing. I will never bash someone for an opinion. What I dont like is when they express rumors and assumptions as facts. Before you post something try to get some details and truth about the subject. I never blog on anything that I dont know about.

All of this silly gossiping needs to stop. One wrong rumor has already said the man was dead. Stop & think about being thousands away from home in another country & in the condition he is in, not to mention his family.
I'm sure there were people that actually saw what happen now if they were in the condition to remember is another story. I hope this is treated as a criminal case, because that's exactly what it looks like.

aak1972
your remarks really said alot about your character, you are heartless. Apparently you have no feelings for the human life. What if this had been you or one of loved ones? I bet you would feel different.

Instead lets show this British family we are humans and say prayers and start start prayer list at churches. Maybe a fund raiser for donations for his family's expensipes while he's in the ICU. Dimples you could even join it the fundraiser. Now is the prefect time to prove you are the place you claim to be & do the right thing!

Actually dixiemoma, I have dealt with the death of close relatives some died naturally others more tragically. I had a 17 year old first cousin that drowned in a pond. I am just saying that death happens to us all. We all deal with it differently. I am not trying to bash you for being a compassionate person. But, did you also make the same compassionate remarks about the children involved in the bus wreck? I looked but I didnt see where you did. My point is that if he does die how will it affect any of the citizens of Natchez. But the constant downgrading remarks that are made about the bars patrons? These are your fellow citizens. So it seems to me that you have more compassion for a drunk stranger than fellow Natchezians. That is what I truely dont undersatnd. And by the way why would Dimples wanna help? The bar involved is Docs.

Posted by pbnj (anonymous) on October 10, 2008 at 3:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I hope they disable these stupid comments soon so i won't be drawn to to read them, two days of this is enough. No aak1972 i will not back people just because they are from natchez over a man just because he is british. i did not do anything but say what is the more likely scenario in situations like this. And before you say I don't know what I am talking about, I think owning and running bars in this town for over ten years i can speculate on not what exactly happened but what is the most likely chain of action.

I have nothing against

Bars,
Drinking,
rednecks,
natchez
or
the owners of bars

Simply the behavior of people that give these places bad names.

I did make a comment about the bus wreck only under under another username. But I will make another one if will make you happy.
Natchez is proving to have some cold hearted people. What every happened to Southern Hospitality!

I'm beginning to beileve the reason people are being so defensive is because they are afraid & guilty.

Every bar in Natcnez & Vidalia has had some kind of dirty doings at one time or another. It takes a tragedy like this to happen to bring it to the publics attention. My daughter had a terrible tragedy the first time she went to the The Mix & thankfull we were able to have something done because of the 911 call.

This poor man is thousands of miles away for home it's not like he's in his home town. I think all the negative comment should stop.

I hope Mr. Whyte recovers (now that we know he's alive) and returns safely to England.
I also hope the truth comes out as to what happened. Usually everyone in those bars stick together so there may be some trouble there.
If the truth does come out I hope they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

natchezresident they never worked on him inside. I was leaving the bar and saw the man outside on the curb. A firefighter from Louisiana and several local firefighters were helping him outside. Dr. Borum then came up to assist. The police then showed up and they were soon followed by the ambulance. I would like to say that I hope this man recovers and he will be in my prayers.

I just can't help but think the guy that pushed this guy totally over reacted when the guy simply used him to steady himself.....I also think maybe the guys inside were maybe jealous of the Brit over his accent that the females obviously thought was "cute".

just sayin

I imagine everyone at the bar knows what happened. Getting them to talk will be a different story. I'm sure people were calling 911 & these calls WILL come out in court. By no one helping in the bar proves they are all a bunch of drunk cowards. One thing that I don't understand is why was Dr. Borum there?
(sayitloud) like you said the British accent (if it's from a part of England you can understand) can be quiet intriguing. I imagine there were quiet a few old drunk men there that felt intimidated.
I just hope Mr.Whyte recovers & takes it to court, maybe it will prove that tourist can't be bullied around by a bunch of drunk rednecks & they will be more careful where they go.

Posted by peoplewatcher (anonymous) on October 12, 2008 at 9:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I keep visiting this forum to get an update on Mr Whyte's condition, and to learn the progress of the police investigation regarding his unprovoked attack in the club. So far all I see is witless people using this forum for idle argumentative chat totally unrelated to the attack and Mr Whyte's condition. There is MSN for that, please go there. As for those who wish to believe Natchez is a lovely & safe place to live, please try & refrain from assuming anyone who gets hurt on a night out is stinking drunk and deserves it. The hospital has confirmed that he was not heavily intoxicated, and many witnesses within the club confirmed Mr Whyte and his friend were courteous and innocently enjoying themselves. I truly hope Mr Whyte pulls through and the local yokels & redneck cowards who feel they have to gang up on tourists & strangers to prove they have a pair...well, I suppose they already have their own issues. No matter what people think, those responsible will always know themselves that they are not men, but sniveling cowards and cruel human beings. They will answer to God if they don't get caught and answer to a judge.

So true. You see things like this happen in movies all the time. A strange man comes in a bar with a totally different accent, that I'm sure to some was hard to understand. So they decide to play a game little with him. Only it went wrong now they are trying to cover it up. Lies are all we have heard so far.
I'm sure there are alot of sobered up rednecks sweating it out right now with cause.
We all need to stop for a moment and think how this man's family over 5,000 away is feeling and worring now.
The man had no idea he was going into a bar full of drunk maniacs.
After all Natchez is suppose to be known for it's Southern Hospility. Of course I think that means sober hospility. Now as for the bar it should be flushed down the toliet alone with Natchez's hospility.

Linenbreeze,
Thank you for your comments. Oddly I feel a bit better about things because of them... and I'm not being funny about it. I see from previous comments that you haven't engaged in the speculation & accusation that has been the history of the busy-bodies. For that I say Kudos. I will still be watching this story very closely to see if the authorities ever identify and catch the animals that did this.

I would never approve of the behavior of these people. Some of the nicest people you would want to meet can get a few drinks in them & turn into monsters. Sadly it looks like Mr. Whyte met one or more of those monsters. It all amounts to some drunk rednecks going to show how big and bad they were to a Britishman. Let's just hope there were 911 call because they can really hold some valuable info & can be used in court.

Now does anyone know how Mr. Whyte is doing?
