Captain Natchez brings humor, TV
Published Sunday, October 12, 2008
NATCHEZ — Miss-Lou children took a break from watching cartoons at home Saturday and convened at the Natchez auditorium to watch them with a pirate, a duke and a Southern belle.
The smarmy riverboat pirate Captain Natchez, better known as Landon Henry, teamed up with other members of Natchez Little Theatre’s production of “Big River” for the first Captain Natchez Show.
The show featured the Cartoon Network cartoons “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” “Chowder,” “Ben 10” and “My Gym Partner is a Monkey,” interjected with singing, dancing and one-line zingers from Captain Natchez himself.
“It takes a long time for a pirate to learn his alphabet,” Henry said. “It’s because we spend years and years at C.”
Landon said he believe theater should be part of everyone’s lives.
“I think everybody needs to be exposed to theater, especially here,” Henry said. “If I had been exposed to it younger, I’d be a lot better off.”
Devonte Turner said that he enjoyed watching Blue, the imaginary friend who stars in Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, but he enjoyed the shenanigans of the pirate crew even more, especially the dancing.
Emily Stewart also enjoyed the singing and dancing.
“I like the pirate,” she said. “I like his voice, it’s funny.”
Henry and his bunch also handed out door prizes, provided by Cartoon Network to the children.
“(The prizes) are things kids would get excited about,” Henry said. “They’re promoting the cartoons.”
Henry and the rest of the cast were happy about the turnout, as was Carrie Lambert, director of the Downtown Development Association.
“I’m shocked at how many people have showed up,” she said.
Approximately 100 tickets were given away before the show and another 30 were sold. But much of the crowd purchased tickets at the door. The program was scheduled to begin in September, but was postponed due to hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The next showing will be Nov. 8.

Wouldn't it be nice to go to a theater production that DID NOT include Layne Taylor for a change?

A hundred had free tickets and 30 had to pay.
So not fair to the 30.

Thirty paid beforehand, and more paid at the door. The hundred free tickets were to promote the event and to give those kids who might not have had an extra five dollars a chance to attend. The promoters were just trying to cover costs and not make a profit.

I am tired of seeing layne taylor and landon henry in every play. What is it the buddy system..

Are there any men other than Layne and Landon trying out for parts in the plays? Perhaps there is a shortage of men wanting to be in theater productions.

i have to agree with beachwhale on this one.... and sunkitty i have seen a few plays there and there are plenty of other men that have been in them... its just they are not in all of them
Posted by beachwhale (anonymous) on October 13, 2008 at 5:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)
its not that they have a shortage, they just dont give any one a chance.

Well then in that case I see you frustration. That is not good. I know for a fact that there have been some really talented men in the plays a few years back. I no longer live in Natchez and am out of the loop.

I agree... Variety is always good. New blood could possibly make it more fun for fellow cast members as well. However, both gentlemen are truly gifted and talented. Good luck to you both!

The casting calls for plays are always open. When people don't go to try out, they can't get the parts. If the Little Theatre is to put on plays, they have to have people try out. Layne is always there, because the theatre is his life, kind of like deer hunting or kayaking is to some people. You take time to do what you enjoy. If you, whoever you all are, want to see someone different on stage, why don't you go try out?

At least they are trying to do something for the kids. I do not know any of them, but I am glad to hear about them doing SOMETHING for the kids. I do not care who gets a picture in the paper, it is better than the pictures that have been in there lately with all the doom and gloom stories. ( i.e. seale Trial, bus crash, teens dying )
