Budget benefits business

Published Saturday, September 6, 2008

NATCHEZ — While the newly announced Adams County tax decrease will benefit individual taxpayers — businesses in the county will derive the greatest benefit.

President of the Adams County Board of Supervisors Henry Watts said he felt the clarification was one that should be made.

“Businesses will see more savings,” he said.

And Watts said the savings businesses will see is based on the idea that a business will normally own more property than an individual.

Watts said a business that owned a handful of vehicles, an office building and employed several people would have an opportunity to save more than an individual that only owned one house and one or two vehicles.

“It adds up for them,” he said of local businesses.

For those who do not own a business there will still be a tax savings — albeit a small one.

Adams County tax assessor Reynolds Atkins said a home owner, with homestead exemption, that owns a house valued at $100,000 would save approximately $10 on their ad valorem taxes.

Peter Burns Jr., Adams County tax collector, said on an automobile valued at $20,000 a taxpayer would likely save approximately $2 on their car tag taxes.

But Atkins and Burns both warned that generalizing tax savings would not provide taxpayers with an accurate picture of their savings.

“It’s difficult to generalize this,” Atkins said.

While the citizens of the county won’t see a massive savings Watts said he was still pleased the supervisors put in the effort that led to the lowering of taxes.

“We only have one budget for the year and we owe it to the tax payers to put the time in,” he said. “These supervisors take this budget very seriously.”

Well as a business owner in Adams County let me say I am completely underwhelmed at this news.

I would prefer those roads and services improved, since the reduction is mostly cosmetic. That's why they take the money in the first place isn't it?

Most local governments who provide most of the services we all use are always broke. The amount of County and City taxes I pay in a year won't even pay for the street light in front of my house. What irks me is the the money that the federal government siezes from any extra buck I make (about half of it). And personal income tax is actually unconstitutional. This is the first time in my memory that the Board of Supervisors reduced taxes. They deserve a compliment. At least it's a start.

How much money are the businesses saving? Is it possible to post that amount, please?

Or, is it possible to post the number of new hires these bussiness are able bring onboard since they are saving so much more money?

Perhaps, these businesses can donate more money to the community now that they are saving more?

My point is, don't just make these changes to help the rich get richer; this is why we won't see another Republican as president for another twelve years. We're kinda tired of seeing our fellow Americans struggling to pay for gas, losing their jobs and loading the pockets of the rich with more of our hard earned dollars.

And we are also tired of seeing our kids spill their blood on foreign soil, so that business owners can keep getting richer.

Okay, I got a little off track, but you get my point!

wow, I'm all for tax cuts, but this is like teasing me.

That's no tax cut, after all the fuss and paperwork this tax cut will wind up costing the county to implement since it's so small

ridiculously insignificant is all I can think, but every little bit helps, I just wish it were more.

Lots better than raising taxes that's for sure.

Chase- you have to pay taxes before you get a tax cut , I think your statement about kids spilling their blood so business owners can get richer is stretching things a bit, cause that ain't happening, I think you are getting your facts mixed up, or are just stupid.

And saying "we" as if everyone agrees with you is quite an overstatement also, as most reasonable people actually disagree and would, in fact, rather go after terrorists and those that help them, instead of waiting for more attacks, thank you very much.

I just hope the BOS is being prudent, not lowering taxes very much at one fell swoop, to be sure and have enough funds for all needed expenses, known and unknown, expected and unexpected, and improve services as many of us want. I was told road improvements would begin as of two weeks ago, but I haven't seen any road work (resurfacing) anywhere. Has anyone seen any roadwork going on in the city/county?

I'm thinking that next year after these new businesses - Rentech, private prison and hotels, casinos, and the few new small family businesses providing additional tax revenue will have further impact enabling the BOS to further reduce taxes. We'll have to wait and see.

Chase - that is so disgraceful to belittle the efforts of our troops so blantantly , you know our troops were committed to battle by the vote of Democrats & Republican Congress with an overwhelming majority with only one objective in mind - find and defeat terrorists and dismantle the regime of Sadam Hussein as we all know he did have WMD's, (we gave them to him in the "80's so anyone who knows their history knows he had WMD's) and did assist terrorists(satellite photography could detect the training camps with large airliner fuselage laying out in the desert easily and this was reported years ago by national news), and did execute terrorist actions with WMD himself (gasing and killing 100,000 + Kurds for example).

As of now, currently with the success of the troop surge in Iraq there is growing support for our continued war on terror. It has been a just and successful campaign, having prevented terrorist attacks here, created a specific battleground with the terrorists (they cannot stand it that democracy is gaining a foothold in the midst of Islam), and reducing the actual number of terrorists by capture or death on the battlefield, plus liberated two countries (Iraq, Afghanistan), persuaded neighboring countries that participate in terrorist activities to reduce their involvement(Pakistan, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and others) and decreased the ability of terrorist to propogate in general.

So just because you don't care about the realities of the situation, and are obviously a liberal and don't get enough hand-outs, don't go round spouting all that nonsense without knowing the real facts. Our troops are there for a reason they believe in and I'm proud of what they are doing.
