Falkenheiner remembered

Published Tuesday, September 23, 2008

VIDALIA — Fred Falkenheiner washed away the bad of life with his happy outlook, his family and LSU baseball.

Falkenheiner, 69, died Tuesday after a long illness, including a battle with cancer.

But he didn’t leave this world without making an impact, friends in Vidalia said.

Falkenheiner worked for the people of Concordia Parish for 30 years, ultimately as police jury president.

He worked alongside others to ensure the creation of the parish airport terminal and the new courthouse, among other things.

“He was a tremendous asset to the City of Vidalia in his capacity as a police jury member,” Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said. “He was a tremendous asset to every committee he belonged to.

“He worked extremely hard for the City of Vidalia and he is going to be missed sorely.”

Falkenheiner served on the police jury until December 1999, when cancer took its toll on his health.

Out of the public eye, Falkenheiner continued to be a source of strength for his friends and family, cousin Percy Rountree said.

“He was always helping others, even if he was the one who needed help,” he said.

In 2000, Falkenheiner was named The Natchez Democrat’s Citizen of the Year for his work in the parish and with the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.

But before his political career began, Falkenheiner was a pitcher on the LSU baseball team.

And he continued to enjoy attending the games until recently, and later listening on the radio, friend Logan Sewell said.

“He was a fine fellow,” Sewell said. “He suffered a lot in the last few years and took it like a gentleman.”

Falkenheiner is survived by his wife Phyllis; three children, Phillip, Lee and Ellyn, and several grandchildren.

I echo everything that is said above. Fred was truly a good person and will always be remembered as such. He fought a good battle, but in the end, the battle won. His family can truly be proud of him and his legacy.

I AM FREE
Don't grieve for me.For now I am free.
I am following the path God laid out for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call.
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play
task left un done must stay that way
I've found that peace at the close of day
if my parting has left a void
than fill it with remembering joy.
a frienship shared.a laugh ,a kiss,
ah, yes these things I two will miss.
be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full ,I savored much
good friends. good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhap my time seemed all to brief.
don't lengthen it with undo grief.
lift up your hearts and shine with me.
God wanted me now:He set me free.

Mr. Fred was someone I always looked up to. I always looked forward to seeing him once a year when he would bring me a new calendar with those beautiful pictures on them. I will always have a special place in my heart for him. He was such a fine man and a good example of what we should all strive to be. His devotion to the citizens of our parish was unmatched. He will be missed for a long time to come. The one good thing is that now he isn't suffering any longer. Rest with the Angels Mr. Fred.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Fred Falkenheiner is the definition of CLASS.

He gave to his family, his friends, and his community.
He helped me numerous times and always had time
for people.

Our world is a little less blessed right now with his
passing.

My thoughts & prayers are with his family at this time.
May the Lord bless and keep you.

If only we could be the same as Fred. Giving our all for others. How wonderful it must be to be with Jesus and be free of life's pain. Thank you dear one, it's our loss.

Farewell Mr. Fred. I know you are in a better place with no pain now. Thanks for all the many years you devoted to coaching baseball. I hope God grants you a beautifull baseball field to watch over. You are a fine man and you inspired me my entire life. Thank you for being such a fine man. You are loved by many and respected by all that knew you.
