Candidates argue over war, taxes
Published Friday, September 26, 2008
OXFORD (AP) — John McCain accused Barack Obama of compiling ‘‘the most liberal voting record in the United States Senate’’ Friday night as the two rivals clashed over taxes, spending, the war in Iraq and more in an intense first debate of the White House campaign. ‘‘Mostly that’s just me opposing George Bush’s wrong-headed policies,’’ shot back the Democrat.
Obama said his Republican rival has been a loyal supporter of the unpopular president, adding that the current economic crisis is ‘‘a final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by President Bush and supported by Sen. McCain.’’
The two men were polite but pointed as they debated at close quarters for 90 minutes on the University of Mississippi campus.
McCain accused his younger rival of an ‘‘incredible thing of voting to cut off funds for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan,’’ a reference to legislation that cleared the Senate more than a year ago.
Obama disputed that, saying he had opposed funding in a bill that presented a ‘‘blank check’’ to the Pentagon while McCain had opposed money in legislation that included a timetable for troop withdrawal.
Obama opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2002, before he was a member of Congress, while McCain voted in the Senate to authorize the war.
‘‘You were wrong’’ on Iraq, Obama repeated three times in succession. ‘‘John, you like to pretend the war began in 2007.’’
McCain replied that Obama has refused to acknowledge the success of the troop buildup in Iraq that McCain recommended and Bush announced more than a year ago.
The two presidential candidates stood behind identical wooden lecterns on stage at the performing arts center at the University of Mississippi for the first of three scheduled debates with less than six weeks remaining until Election Day. The two vice presidential candidates will meet next week for their only debate, and Obama and McCain each put in a plug for his own running mate.
But there was a difference: Democrat Joe Biden made the round of post-debate television shows. NBC and CNN said they invited McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has granted only three interviews since joining the ticket a month ago, but she declined.
The 47-year-old Obama is seeking to become the nation’s first black president. McCain, 72, is hoping to become the oldest first-term chief executive in history — and he made a few jokes at his own expense.
‘‘I’ve been around a while,’’ he said at one point. ‘‘Were you afraid I couldn’t hear him?’’ he said at another after moderator Jim Lehrer repeated a phrase.
But he also sought to turn his age into an advantage. ‘‘There are some advantages to experience and knowledge and judgment,’’ he said. ‘‘And I honestly don’t believe that Sen. Obama has the knowledge or experience’’ to serve as commander in chief.
McCain also made a point of declaring his independence from Bush. ‘‘I have opposed the president on spending, on climate change, on torture of prisoners, on Guantanamo Bay, on a long — on the way that the Iraq War was conducted. I have a long record and the American people know me very well ... a maverick of the Senate.’’
It was a debate that almost didn’t happen. McCain decided a few hours in advance to attend, two days after announcing he would try to have the event rescheduled if Congress had not reached an agreement on an economic bailout to deal with the crisis now gripping Wall Street.
The two men were pointed but polite, although at least once McCain sought to depict his rival as naive on foreign policy. That was in response to Obama’s statement that it might become necessary to send U.S. troops across the Pakistani border to pursue terrorists.
‘‘You don’t say that out loud,’’ retorted McCain. ‘‘If you have to do things, you do things.’’
He also criticized Obama for having said he would sit down without precondition with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
‘‘So let me get this right, we sit down with Ahmadinejad and he says ’we’re going to wipe Israel off the face of the earth’ and we say, ’no you’re not.’ Oh please,’’ McCain said.
Obama said Henry Kissinger, the former Republican secretary of state and a McCain adviser, shared his view on talks with Iran.
The two men also differed on federal spending. McCain said a freeze on most government spending was worth considering, except for veterans, defense and ‘‘some other vital issues.’’
Obama said the problem with that was that some programs needed more money. He mentioned early childhood education as an example.
Moderator Jim Lehrer’s opening question concerned the economic crisis. While neither man committed to supporting bailout legislation taking shape in Congress, they readily agreed lawmakers must take action to prevent millions of Americans from losing their jobs and their homes.
Both also said they were pleased that lawmakers in both parties were negotiating on a compromise.
McCain jabbed at Obama, who he said has requested millions of dollars in pork barrel spending, including some after he began running for president.
As he does frequently while campaigning, the Republican vowed to veto any lawmaker’s pork barrel project that reaches his desk in the White House. ‘‘You will know their names and I will make them famous,’’ he said.
The stakes were high as the two rivals walked on stage. The polls gave Obama a modest lead and indicated he was viewed more favorably than his rival when it came to dealing with the economy. But the same surveys show McCain favored by far on foreign policy.
Both candidates had rehearsed extensively, Obama prepping with advisers at a resort in Clearwater, Fla., and McCain putting in debate work at his home outside Washington.
The two presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15. Vice presidential contenders Sarah Palin and Joe Biden are to square off in a single debate Oct. 2 at Washington University in St. Louis.

I believe Obama did an excellent job debating McCain. He is obviously well informed on foreign affair issues. He showed diplomatic skills and class by expressing agreement with McCain when appropriate.
McCain appeared angry, - I do not trust his emotional maturity and hence his judgement.
McCain did not once mention "middle class" during the debate.
After Sarah Palin's embarrassing interviews this week, I'm thinking she may drop out "to spend more time with her family". I believe McCain choosing Palin is an example of his poor judgement and is the complete opposite of "putting the country first". After seeing her interviews this week, the thought of her being president (and McCain IS old) is frightening. I think McCain was just going for Hillary supporters and gave no thought to the qualifications of his running mate.

I've noticed that Bill Clinton's emotional stability and/or maturity is never questioned when he expresses his legendary anger.
Posted by Yeahuhuh (anonymous) on September 27, 2008 at 7:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Yeah, you could tell Bill Clinton something about being smooth huh Granpa?
If you think repeating that the other guy is a socialist and that he doesn't understand is good leadership McCain probably impressed you. Some people think that trait and style is important.
If you think a president should be a kind and reasonable person more focussed on details then you probably liked Obama.
John McCain showed how being tuff and condescending are his attributes. As a part of that he said things about Obama designed to make Obama look bad, but for every thing McCain had to say a rebuttal was pretty easy, and the record could be presented to show McCain stupid in the same ways.
McCain came off as a guy who specializes in conflict and has no ideas about much else except more of the same. He didn't appear to understand how much money his tax cuts to the wealthy give away and his only defense was to repeat "earmarks, earmarks, earmarks" -- while Obama pointed out McCain's tax cuts earmarked a lot more money that could be used to pay our government debts down.
McCain had nothing new to add to Bush's idea if we give wealthy folks their money back it would stimulate the economy enough to make everything work. That has never worked yet, but is all McCain seemed to have going for him -- aside from being nasty and condesending.

Yeahuhuh, Ha. I'm just pointing out the (obvious) double standards that are used. I'm sorry I missed the "debate" but I didn't have access to it. From what I've been reading everyone feels like their candidate did well and the other guy did poorly. That was expected. So that leaves us where? :)

Yeahuhuh....McCain killed obama in the debate. Simple!!!!
Even Obama can give you 9 reasons why McCain won the debate.
McCain condesending? I call that being a leader !
Posted by Yeahuhuh (anonymous) on September 27, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I'm just going on the polls of what other people say about who won.
If you think being condescending, assuming you are superior and accusing the other guy of not knowing is good enough to prevail, then McCain won.
If you think that is not so important and you have to manage facts and figures, Obama won.
McCain particularly didn't acknowledge the whopping costs of his rich folks tax cuts as he stressed earmarks. he appeared not to understand Obama as Obama pointed out several places you could save more money in smarter ways.
McCain also didn't seem to recognize that policy that depends really on mostly just making tax cuts to the wealthy is exactly what hasn't worked during the Bush terms.

Clearly McCain was the winner ! He showed the world that that being over 60 doesn't mean you can't think for yourself and experience counts a lot more than being just schooled on what to say . I have to give this to obama though , I understand why Hollywood likes him so much ,The man can read his lines real good and he can lie with a straight face while looking you right in the eye . He scares me because as John McCain says,"He doesn't understand". We can't have him as our commander in chief! He doesn't understand . Give the boy some time . Maybe he will grow up and decide what he really wants to do for his career . After all ,hasn't he left every job he had in search for something else .

It should be clear to anyone who has even a rudimentary understanding of the presidency and what is required to be president, who won the debate last night. McCain was well-informed, spontaneous, and clearly demostrated that he has the experience and knowledge to be president. Obama's responses were so scripted that a first year college intern working for his campaign could have delivered them. Obama demonstrated in stark terms exactly what his campaign is all about: rehashing the same tried and failed Democrat party policy positions that have been around for the last fifty years. To sum up Obama's platform, a person need only look to Ronald Reagan and the words he used describe the Democrat parties governing philosophy: "If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. If it stops moving, subsidize it." The simple fact of the matter is that Obama is just not qualified to be president of the United States. HIs becoming president would be the equivalent of hiring a first year computer science major to be the CEO of Microsoft. The fact that he even had the arrogance to run for president when he clearly doesn't have the resume' for the job displays a level of immaturity and hubris that is dangerous in a person who would be the most powerful individual on the planet.

Oops. It looks like McCain has dropped a percentage point in the last 10 hours or so. But really, this is the only poll I've seen on it.

I don't put a lot of stock into who "won" or lost. For reasons previously stated.
I didn't vote, of course. That would not have been fair. :(

PEOPLE! When is the South going to WAKE UP and realize that the Republicans are ALL about BIG BUSINESS, BIG TAX CUTS FOR RICH COMPANIES, and NOT about US! Look at how that stupid moran BUSH (whom YOU elected) screwed around playing a guitar while people in New Orleans drowned in feces and filth! Yeah, yeah...they should have not been there...but remember that our LEVEES BROKE! The wind didn't do that to New Orleans! The Corps of Engineers did it by not owning up to the fact that "the levees" were structurally substandard. NOW! In case you haven't (won't) watch or read "the news", do you realize that Sarah Palin, the moose-skinning, DUMB broad he dug up in ALASKA to agree with everything they want her to say or do will be THE PRESIDENT OF THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD if/when ole McCain dies??????? Jesus help us! And for all of you RACIST PIGS, Obama's WHITE mother from Kansas happened to fall in love with a PhD.student from Africa who married her, gave her a son, and left! The child grew up with his WHITE mother, raised by his WHITE grandparents...He's got more education than 99% of you, (and so does his wife), so for the GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY (and I LOVE my country), say what you want to your buddies, but PULL THE LEVER FOR OBAMA when you're in that booth alone!!!! Save our lives and our reputation and our friendships with the free world! No more war-mongering LIARS! We go to war when it is necessary...and we FIND BIN-LADIN!!!....not make Halliburton and the BUSH Crime Family more bucks while we sit down here in the South on food stamps and can't drive our cars because of the gas prices! obama doesn't want you to know the reason he wants to cut taxes for the poor is so he can pay back quite a few of his big corporate suppoters with MANDATORY government rules like forcing Americans to buy insurance for health care . And that's just one example of how your would be tax dollars will be spent . This big bad wolf is using this so called tax break for the middle class as bait for your vote . He's going to make it MANDATORY for your so called tax break dollars to be spent with his choice of enterprizes without even going through Congress . You can bet there are debts to be paid . Can we afford to pay for obama's run for president ? Yes,Congress will vote on making it MANDATORY but they won't tell you who you have to buy through . Or will they?

I felt like McCain was thoughtful, calm, and in control. Obama on the other hand was the one twisting, fidgeting, stuttering, and constantly interupting. I doubt though that the debates will settle anyones mind on this, because most of us already have our minds made up.

For those people who don't think anyone else's opinion matters check the poll results below:
MCain supporters are fools for Mccain and are not good sources for who won. Ditto Obama supporters for him. But if you want to see what's important, ask uncommitted voters:
40% of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner.
22% thought John McCain won.
38% saw it as a draw.
68% of these voters think Obama would make the right decision
about the economy. 41% think McCain would.
49% of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. 55% think McCain would.
In overall groups of decided and undecided voters, here are the results:
Debate poll/debate results via CNN/Opinion Research telephone poll:
51-38 Obama win
52-47 O on iraq
58-37 economy
Good bye Senator McCain. Next time Barack will get mean back to you and do it with style. This time he was nicer to you than you were to him.

Chris Rock [comedy], said it best. Paraphrased: The man {Obama} with 1 house and 1 million has more interest in helping the middle-class and poor than a man with 10 houses and multi-millions {McCain}. If the man looses the house and 1 million, he joins the growing # of US citizens, however the man with 10 still has 9 houses and millions left. Who do you think would have your best interest at heart? JUST A THOUGHT!!!!!!!!!

The woman is amazing.

fidling just explained something for me , now I know why obama is sometimes rude . His father left him and left him with his white grandparents, whom he has shown little respect for, that raised him to get an education on,even if it is on our tax dollars because he is a minority . I guess it really does matter whether a Dad sticks around or not . From what I can see the barack's so called dad didn't have any qualms about leaving his wife and child and not looking back . You can't help but wonder if some of those genes are flowing inthe heart of obama . Would he desert his own country for selfish reasons and flee to another part of the world ? It could happen .

"Senator McCain" is how you describe someone third person, or formally.
After someone has just given a self-serving or untrue version of your views, you call them "John,". You move to a more familiar usage and encourage intimacy, but insist on explaining what your view really is.
A respectful speech form is to say "John (Senator McCain) is right, but..."
A disrespectful speech form is to say "Senator Obama just does not understand...." Ignore the other speaker and grandstand to the audience -- that is not debate that is politics.

kmbjd40 didn't your mama ever tell you an online survey on a sensationalist news site is not an accurate poll? The web has far more of those viewer polls that only reflect site readership.
That's why I supplied a real poll done by proper procedure.
The only people who pick polls as if all are equal are stupid and not interested in real information. They are the last folks whose citations should be believed. Here you use that claim to try and stomp out my better information. Grow up and do some research or someone else will call you stupid.

When was the last time a poor person hired someone? As a business owner I would love to keep some of my money to hire another employee. Could use two more right now.

Democrats want to blame Republicans for Big Business going overseas?? Well why do you think they do, because of taxes stupid. We need to give business incentive to stay here and MAKE MONEY so they can HIRE workers.
McCain won!!!
Emotional maturity?? Give me a break, I want a President that has passion and has the courage to get MAD when he needs to and kick butt on our enemies.

"how can you cut taxes to people that aren't paying any to begin with???"
Great point. Kroger. I was saying to my momma the other night that the middle class doesn't really pay taxes at all. That all of this Obama stuff is just a lie and Republicans will watch your back and will keep the economy right.
She said, "If you give middle class people a tax break their money goes back into the economy, too, doesn't it?"
I told her she shouldn't listen to socialists. The only way to make business better is to give bigger businesses their taxes back. Sure a lot of them go overseas with their job investments now but not all of them, and if McDonalds is the only job they make here it is still better than liberal jobs like .... well there are no liberal jobs but government are there?
She just can't see it. Socialism socialism socialism that's all you need to know, I tell her, and which party hates it most. Everything they will tell you is automatically true.
Momma said she was dumb enough to listen to that socialism scare the first ten or 12 times they say it for every single politician that ever opposed them and then she got to thinking they should come up with something else. She said it's easy to tell a liar because they don't say much and the repeat it again and again. She said you can tell if someone is good by looking at what they did and that repeat talk is for fools.
My momma just thinks everything to death. She said she even thought McCain looked like a marshmallow with a nose and eyes. "And what's with that cheek?" she said. C'mon maw!
She made so much money while she was working that she just doesn't think any more. Imagine, a mature white woman going for the likes of Obama.
I told her, "You ain't gonna have any friends if you put that Obama sticker on your car, Mamma."
She had the audacity to tell me to shut up. She said I'd be paying taxes from the Bush years long after she was dead, and said "Just live for a while, son!"

Bottom line is Obama's basic capaign promises...welfare type issues such as free healthcare, college, tax the rich and give to the poor are now dead in the water. The economy WILL NOT support more welfare and Obama admittedly recognizes that he cannot do what he promised.
His other major issue was that he wants to demilitarize America...hello Mr. Obama, this is not the time to play nice...you heard Iran's president say he wants to destroy America, we know that he has been attempting to build a nuclear program, and yet Obama does not see him as a threat, Iran and all those other cute little countries shouldn't scare us...RIGHT!
On the economy...If we would go back to the very basics of capitalism, we could get out of this economic mess without a trillion dollar bailout. Get rid of the mark to market accounting provision in SOX, eliminate the capital gains tax, or at least suspend it, and cut the corporate tax rate. If you knew you could "play" on the stock market without capital gains on your profit, wouldn't you be more willing to invest?

we know why you're an obama fan
you're the one that sounds stupid making insulting remarks about a man that has proven himself above and beyond reproach with his undeniable service and dedication to putting his COUNTRY FIRST, time and time again.
McCain acting with dignity and obviously put Obama in his place, especially in regards to foreign affairs. McCain was totally in control of the situation with Russia and other foreign affairs and was awesome with his depth of knowledge of the subject.
I want a President that can be a real Commander-in-Chief, not a delegate or an economic developer, that's a role for a lesser subordinate to the President. Obama should stay in the Senate, if he's lucky, he hasn't done much for Illinois, and pay his dues and learn a few lessons first. He obviously is out of his league up against McCain.
When it comes time to vote- I think most folks will trust McCain with thier livelihoods and vote McCain & Palin. I know I will.
How can you sensibly trust a junior senator, has no record to back up his BS talk, has no achievements, never served in the military, has connections to racist and anti-American fanatics, votes for pork barrel spending, flip flops on issues (lsuch as drilling- now he's sort of for it) , doesn't understand foreign policy, and in his short term of service has proven himself to be the MOST LEFT WING SENATOR in Congress.
Come on you selfish liberals, put your country first and put aside your desire to reap the false benefits of empty promises that are only an attempt to bribe you and buy your vote. You don't need handouts, you need a hand UP.

A perfect example of the damage the democrats do to the low-middle income can be shown by the increase in the minimum wage. Sure it sounds great at first, until you lose your job because your employer can no longer afford to employ you. This happened and now it is going up AGAIN in 2009, couple that with the anti-corporate mentality of the Democratic party and all you small business folks will be running your own shops, if you survive. All you former minimum wage employees will now be collecting unemployment and welfare, increasing the deficit.
You see, everything has a consequence.

That's what I told MAMA! Kroger.
She said if I wanted to do something other than make myself feel better I should look at professional polls and what undecided people thought. I said undecided people were dumb. She said they're the ones that would decide the election no matter what I said.
She said John McCain and a lot of Republican presidents are presidents for folks that just wan a daddy. She said she outlived 2 husbands and don't need a daddy.
That McCain talked to Obama like he was his boy and she said she had known too many men like that and they didn't tend to be near as big as the legend in their own mind.
She said she wanted a man who was big enough to keep us out of a war, not somebody who would get into war cuz his daddy was a soldier, crash his plane, make a deal with the enemy, then go home to be a full time politician, dump his wife and marry some cute money.
I told her she should respect Senator McCain. She said she had too much self respect to think she needed to do that. Go figure!!!! She is getting so cocky in her old age!

obama doesn't want you to know the reason he wants to cut taxes for the poor is so he can pay back quite a few of his big corporate suppoters with MANDATORY government rules like forcing Americans to buy insurance for health care .
<<<<< You are wrong again,( as usual) Belle, I can personally tell you who paid for Obama's Campaign, "ME AND TWO AND A HALF MILLION OTHERS. I personally own $100. of him and can't wait to collect, LOL, ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Bunny why should hippie reply to you about those topics AGAIN?
First -- What does it look like when you have full control of the economy for 4 years and 8 years of administration?
Second - did you do worse than anyone in recent history?
If the answer is "yes" you come up with something else if you want something different, or use the same mehtods if you want the same results.
If you want other people to listen to you, then you don't act like you can't understand what you just did. They will think you're a fool.

I really don't have much to say. Of all of you you blog on this website, who has money in access of $500,000? Of course I think my judgement is right, so if you are in the so called "middle class" or below voting Republican is only going to hurt us more. People open your eyes don't let the blind lead the blind. The middle class and monetarily poor represent 90% of Americans. Question is, where do you belong? Not racially but where do you belong on the lines of values!

old hippie, you make me laugh
cut taxes for the poor??? Man put that joint down and think about that. The poor are NOT PAYING TAXES!!!
What that really is, is a handout that is taken from someone else, it's actually called - income redistribution. There's no way Obama can pay for all those handouts.
What really bothers me is that Obama says straight out -" any business that makes over $250,000 (net revenue) will have tax INCREASE!!! That's EVERY business in America!!!!
My own business does that, and we're just a little small family business. EVen a little sandwich shop makes that much.
That will kill employment.
On top of that you have Obama's MANDATORY $12,000 health insurance payments per employment.

I would just like to see if hippie is capable of making an intelligent argument, I have yet to see that.
Clinton pressured Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to loosen credit guidelines so that owning a home would be more affordable. The dems also revamped the CRA to force banks to loosen their credit guidelines or risk regulatory retaliation. They created this credit crisis all in the name of socialism, or as Obama refers to it, fairness.

I am still wondering however, given the current poor condition this country is in, why are we yet using divisive monikers like liberal and conservative? Who cares? I want this country back as I remembered it and for those who are older than I am, probably as good as you can recall.

Poll results for first presidential debate (with update of independent voter poll): Obama wins
By George Harris, Kansas City Star Readers Advisory Panel 2008
Who won the debate?
Ignore all commentators' opinions expressed without evidence. The winner is determined by the numbers, especially the votes of the undecided. Here are some preliminary answers:
CBS Insta Poll shows Barack Obama won 39% to John McCain's 25% with 36% saying the debate was a draw.
Insider Advantage reports of those polled Obama won 42% to McCain's 41% with Undecided 17%
CNN reports voter opinions that Obama "did better" 51%, McCain "did better" 38%
The CNN poll showed men were evenly split, but women gave Obama higher marks 59% to 41% for McCain.
The CNN pollster noted a slight Democratic bias in the survey. Well, there just are more Democrats in the country. So more Democrats watched. However, this may also suggest Democratic enthusiasm which will help turn out the vote.
The MSNBC on-line (non-scientific) poll showed Obama winning the debate 52% to 33%. (But this is what one would expect from such a poll at MSNBC because of the nature of its viewers.)
MediaCurves.com reported Independents favored Obama overall 61% to 38%. (I do not know this organization or know how it conducts polls, so take results with a couple of grains of salt.)
Some free analysis: As I noted on this site during and after the debate, McCain appeared angry and dismissive of Obama and generally impressed as someone who would slap colleagues across the aisle if reaching over to them. He said several times in the debate that he hasn't won the Miss Congeniality contest in the Senate, and he proved why during the debate.
I suspect that women voters especially would be turned off by McCain's sarcastic tone because women do tend to be the conciliators in our society and saw Obama display those conciliatory qualities very well in the debate. Obama looked at McCain, and McCain wouldn't return the eye contact but rather glared or displayed a tight and angry expression.
I also suspect (but don't have the data to support) that older voters were also turned off by Senator McNasty. I believe older voters will also be reassured that, though McCain has been around longer, Obama has a good grasp of foreign affairs and can learn quickly. He impressed as a statesmen, in marked contrast to McCain's warrior demeanor.
McCain referred to Obama as naive or as not understanding on many issues when the listener probably saw a mere difference of opinion. McCain's condescenion felt annoying; to the listener who might agree or disagree with Obama, Obama nevertheless was making good points, not naive ones.

Let's examine just a couple of points, and maybe Yeahuhuh and oldhippie01 can put down their Kool-Aid and turn away from the liberal blogs long enough to respond in a manner that somewhat resembles intelligent discourse. What, before the current mess in the financial markets, was the main drag on our economy? The energy crisis. Who is responsible for the energy crisis and refuses to address, or even acknowlege, the root causes of the problem? The Democrats. The Democrats and their idiotic allegiance to environmental groups have practically eliminated the US's ability to tap our vast energy resources. As a result, we are held hostage by other oil producing country's, many of whom are our enemies. This makes us vulnerable to disruptions is our energy supply because we get so much of our energy from a highly unstable part of the world. If we were accessing our own energy, we could more easily control any supply problems, which drive up the price of oil, and we wouldn't be vulnerable to the supply disruptions that occur when some nut decides to blow up a pipeline or some other similar disruption occurs. Instead, the Democrats talk about moving to "alternative" forms of energy, knowing full well that this does nothing to address the immediate problem. The result is that we see the price of everything increase because everything in our economy is tied to the cost of energy. Prices goes up, people stop spending, the economy slows down. Now we have the melt-down in the financial markets. How did we get here? Once again, we can thank the Dems. They rewrote the lending rules under Clinton, they used the Justice Department to pressure lenders to loan money to people who couldn't pay it back, and they ignored the problems at Freddie and Fannie. In 2001, the Bush administration tried to address the problem and were stopped by the Dems. In 2005, Alan Greenspan predicted exactly what's happening today. John McCain co-sponsored a bill that would have addressed the problem and probably prevented the crisis we are now faced with. Again, the Dems blocked it. Every attempt by the administration and the Republicans to address this pending catastrophe was blocked by the Dems. So when these libs try to make the case that the Republicans have been in control for the last eight years and it's all their fault, perhaps people would be better served if they examined the facts instead of listening to Democratic talking points or reading liberal blogs. And isn't it funny how all this came to a head after the Dems took over the Congress? They try to pretend they were out of town for the last eight years, but as is usually the case, the facts tell a very different story.

KMBJD -- I also want to address US energy production because I know about it.
Heard of the Haynesville Shale? Google that -- it's right under your nose. 3rd Largest gas field in the world. Know TB Pickens? Seen about the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale? Google that. It's right under your nose, too. 5 to 40 billion barrels recoverable south of here, just proven. Environmentalists do not stop that exploration -- landowners want fair lease money -- that is what stops that.
Why aren't oil companies drilling the Tuscaloosa more? They haven't gotten the leases at low enough prices yet -- they want to pay less than $150 for a 5 year lease. Producers there have bought about 300,000 acres at super low prices and wish to keep the play as secret as possible for as long as possible to squeeze the landowners. They are doing stock manuevers and selling exploration companies back and forth while they drill production as slowly as possible. All calculated to keep leases low and the values of their companies high -- waiting to produce is a no-brainer.
The reason oil companies want the offshore leases is that no landowners are involved but one. They go there, let us farmers sit and wonder for a while and our leases go down. Oil goes down -- fine, they will buy cheap leases onshore before oil goes back up. Win, win.
The reason energy is expensive is because OIL wants it to be expensive. You want to blame environmentalists but that is not true. That from someone who is in the business.
Don't be a fool. If you give away your offshore reserves they will sell it back to you at prices that are the highest prices that can get. They sit quietly while you whine about environmentalists and they help fund the environmental movement because they will screw you long time in the end. Think man!

Senator Barrack Hussein Obama looked strained, rather scared and he has never looked that way. However, he is used to a teleprompter and maybe that rattled him somewhat. Senator McCain had the facts, looked so presidential but I believe this debate was a tie with Obama taking the lead on our economy and McCain taking the lead on Foreign policy. I just do not give much credence to debates, did them in college and you can swing the end result whichever way. People have made up their minds and actually are ready to vote. If you view the electoral map on Politico, Barrack Hussein Obama is just a very few less the 270 needed to win - so welcome your next President Barrack Hussein Obama, sure hope you enjoy him. Me, I support experience, security and that my friends is Senator John McCain..

You are right huhuh, the McCain supporters are clearly making an intelligent argument with facts and data, while you are spouting Obama's terminology..."the last eight years..we need change"...blah-blah-blah. We need to face the facts, an Obama administration will send our economy spiraling down into complete meltdown.
Obama has no experience in foreign policy and proved that last night when he said "When I am president, I will sit down with whoever I want to at the time and place of my choosing" Think about that statement..."I will" without preconditions. He doesn't understand what he's talking about. His god complex will make us the laughing stock of the world. His idea to slash military spending will make us vulnerable to the likes of Russia, China, Iran, etc.etc.etc. His position in Iraq would have lost the war. He is to inexperienced to be our commander in chief at this delicate time in history (or any for that matter)
I am sorry that people feel McCain looks like a marshmallow and therefore is not qualified to be president. GIVE ME A BREAK

I have noticed with great interest how you all are posting negative comments about one candidate or the other and who won and who lost. My husband, children, and I watched the debate last night, and personally I didn't see enough to determine which side won. It was interesting to me though that Senator McCain was so out of touch with the middle class man. Earlier in a post I saw someone say that middle class people don't pay taxes. According to Encarta, the definition of middle class is "social class with average incomes: the section of society between the poor and the wealthy, including business and professional people and skilled workers."
I am a "middle class citizen" who worked, paid taxes, and retired. Now that I am retired, I am still paying taxes. I also find it interesting that some of the wealthy business owners, who by the way Senator McCain want to give a tax break to, seem to be the ones who need to be bailed out. The way I see it, If Senator McCain has his way, they will get a tax break, get bailed out if they get into trouble, and keep a good portion of their profits as well. Since the big businesses (wealthy) need to be bailed out and the middle class don't pay taxes, I wonder where the money will come from?

Obama supported the dems version of the bailout which would cost the taxpayers trillions while McCain supported the side of the House Replublicans which would put the burden in the hands of the failed companies versus the taxpayers. The dems can pass their version at anytime but they are afraid to jump in solo, they want to be able to blame the republicans when the economy melts down.
The dems came out publicly stating that they had already come to a solution that would be agreeable to both sides PRIOR to McCain coming to DC is all a big political game, they were trying to minimize McCain's role in this crisis. The fact that the dems are playing political games rather than working to find a viable solution speaks volumes.

If Barack wanted to win he should have been meaner, because the McCain fans usually judge on conflict points and don't get into details like the egg-headed Democrats do.
I'm just reporting on here about how the rest of the folks saw it and how the undecided saw it cuz they will decide the election.
The rest of us can't change our vote year to year and the parties take advantage of us. That keeps Republicans stupid and talking about socialists and keeps Democrats voting against the Republicans to stop the theft.
Thanks for being moderate. But you pretty much see the situation.

happybunny,
I am retired, my children are all grown, working and paying taxes now. Because my husband and I are retired, our insurance premiums are over $800.00 a month. Most low and middle class citizens don't make enough to pay mounting insurance premiums, rising utilities, escelating gas prices, house payments, etc. My point was instead of worrying about who won or lost the debate, maybe we should be contacting our presidential candicates to help the economy before it goes to hell in a hand basket-- it is heading that way fast. We are already in debt up to our eyeballs and we are steadily adding to it. As a middle class citizen, I try to live within my means, so why shouldn't the Government?

Classylady, you're right, they need to put politics aside and worry about the economy. It does not matter who won or lost last night. What matters is their position on the issues. Obama has already conceded that his socialized healthcare plans are not possible, nor his plans to pay for everyone's education. The bailout plan he supports will cost us trillions while there are viable alternatives out there that would not be such an economic blow.
Just as an aside, someone sent me an e-mail in fun but it made perfect sense. Instead of a big corporate bailout, send each American over 18 an equal amount (I don't recall the figures, just over $500K), the government would then get their fair share, leaving us with just over $200K. What an injection that would be to our economy. Those who can't pay their mortgage would get a free pass, those that can could invest the money, the benefits are limitless. Of course that is a pipedream but a nice one.

Dottie, you make a good point about experience. I thought Obama was too green until I saw that it was him or the other guy. Now Barack looks pretty smart to me compared.
I personally have the experience of watching McCain support policy after policy that has gotten us into trouble and him not being able to come up with anything different. That makes me think if I want more screwups I should vote for him.
I want something different so I won't be voting for him Experience is a great thing to have but people tend to do more of what they have experience at doing and by that note McCain is a failure.
As a party maverick that means he won't be able to control his party either. That don't sound like he has much going, but he is tough when people disagree with him. I'll give him that.

so what do you propose
take money from those that have and GIVE it to those who are too dumb to make something of themselves????
please don't be so condascending - a lot of those street people have a lot more than they would ever dare to officially report
that and there are more than 10% of our population that make a decent living, have businesses, and hire others
it's not fair to PUNISH those that make the effort and take the risk and are able to give others a job
Businesspeople know the truth, minimum wage, mandatory healthcare paid by employers, mandatory retirement accounts, penalties (tax) on revenue, etc -- all these do is make it harder for me to give you a job. That and if you make it too hard for me to make a buck, then I'll do like the lady with Clothes for KIds (or whatever the name is) did and go open a factory in Costa Rica or wherever she went in Latin America. We have to give companies and businesses a valid REASON - a money making opportunity - to be here. Then there will be more jobs and better economy. It's not that complicated.

I do not understand how anyone feels McCain "won" last night. The man was fidgety, argumentative, and seemed to be incapable of saying anything without throwing "Ronald Regan" in every other sentence.
How are you impressed by this poor delivery of regugitated buzz-words? You could summarize McCain's speech last night by saying "Gen. Petreus, Ronald Regan, Surge," and just repeating it over and over again. The man looked like he was barely keeping himself in check and was fighting the urge to smart off at Obama.
McCain is a hot-head and that "maverick" quality that he's so proud of makes me nervous about the idea of a hot-headed guy for president who makes seemingly random and possibly erractic decisions.

let local banks handle loans where the mortgages for the house stay local
block those mortgage bundleing swindling CEO's from doing that scam
let those huge mortgage paper handlers go broke. I think we can carry on without them. And jail those CEO's and the Board of Trustees that give them the millions, put them all in jail.
One of Obama's black buddies a CEO of a big financial institution made $150,000,000 in one year. Another CEO made $20,000,000 in 21 weeks. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Bill Clinton started it, Barney Franks kept it going. Obama is more socialistic than either of them. Its scary and downright evil.

yeahuhuh, uh huh,uh huh, uh huh,
McCain has failed at -- what? - NOTHING
he has made many reforms, and others he has tried to do, was fillabustered by the Democrats, or just couldn't get enough support.
But he has always put the COUNTRY FIRST, above his party, above himself. JUst like his Dad, when in Vietnam- knowing his son was a pow in Hanoi - he carpet bombed it anyway.
I had disagreed with McCain's ideas on illegal immigration, I didn't think he was tough enough on illegals already here. But he wanted to compromise and saw the practicality of giving them a path to legalization. After I thought about it, his plan made sense. This man is humble, compassionate and has vast experience that most of us can barely percieve. He is truly a MAN of HONOR, a true AMERICAN HERO that will always put the good of the country first. I believe that will all my heart. Do you really believe that about OBAMA?? If you do, what do you base that on? What has he DONE to prove it?
The proof is just not there, well I guess he has hope and change, if you believe that bull.

Krogers I don't think a lot of local banks hold the loans they write, and for good reason. The local bank would run out of money in a growth environment. That's why we have a federal reserve and a banking system set up the way we do.
Those loans are written by a lot of loan officers in many banks, and they bundle and re-sell at will. The guys on the street that sold the loans are the swindlers. If you de-regulate them they swindle more. That's what happened and Bush threw gas on the fire trying to make the economy surge in his rule.
The fat cats that bundled loans are part of our system that keeps more and more money available for loans. If the loans were bad it was just a matter of time for the loans to go bad. Now that all property has dropped in value, most loans are no longer secured with enough property value -- so banks fail when the people don't pay the note.
Maybe no golden parachutes are appropriate for the CEO's but much else is a bit nutty. Your jail stuff is nuts. But then .....

djarm - white
I mean black
would that be a racist name?
anyway it's easy to see why McCain won!!
Obama was totally lost on the issue of the evening - foreign relations and policy
McCain was fluent with the issues, Obama was lost. McCain was to the point and decisive about Russia, Iran, and Terrorism. He even talked about a new League of Democracies!! How RELEVANT with the irrelevant UN we have today.
DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE WHOLE DEBATE??!! Because you obviouisly missed a few things.
Also, Obama spent a lot of time saying "I agree with John", and "John is right about that". So the way I see it McCain was LEADING THE WAY and Obama was following.

You can't be that dumb Kroger.
McCain supported the party line and the party line has spent more than Democrats ever did, run us in the ground, de-regulated loans and sunk the system. You can't claim the guy as a Republican, have him vote the Republican ticket and then say he was not a Republican and is successful because he is a maverick republican.
McCain is a party maverick. He can't even control his party. And the other party is in control, anyway.
McCain is a fighter and that is about all he can do. He is not right and cannot lead. That is why he is a maverick -- otherwise he would be a hero in his party yet they could hardly stand him until they were stuck with him.
All he is good at is pointing fingers at the other guys and bragging. he did marry a cute, rich woman though, and has just been a Washington insider otherwise. Sorry Charlie.

Okay, forget "emotional maturity" - Candidate McCain is a hothead, a drama queen, a grandstander - no courage needed, recklessness and irresponsibility will do the job.
I do not trust our country's economic and physical safety in the hands of a crapshooter.
I'll go with stability, intelligence, knowledge, perserverance, finesse, self-respect and respect for others every time.
McCain voted for 90 percent of President Bush's proposals.
I would like to know if McCain would have been admitted to the Naval Academy had his father and grandfather not have been admirals. Socialism?
I am convinced that he would have been kicked out if he had been born to "ordinary" parents because of his irresponsibility. Socialism.
Or if he could have advanced his political career had he not divorced his crippled wife and married a beer fortune.
True socialism?
Why is no one complaining about the socialist farm subsidy "handouts" or the socialist corporate "bailouts"?
If I had 200 million dollars, I would consider voting for McCain - I don't - easy choice.

That's what the new proposal has in it!! That's one of the new mortgage policies. Along with accountability of CEO"S and Boards of Trustees.
And it makes a lot of sense. Keep it local. No bundling and trading of loans to avoid the risk of bad loans. That way if a bank makes bad loans then they suffer, makes sense to me.
Oh so you think CEO's that rape the system should go scott-free? Typical liberal, you want change, you want things better, but you don't want those that abuse the system to be held accountable!! Typical, all talk and NO WALK. The only way to keep them from stealing is proper punishment. Oh, I forgot, liberals don't believe in that, let the criminals off, they won't do it again, yeah right!!

Great point southernwoman.
McCain was tolerated in Academy because his father and GF were highly placed admiralty. He graduated what something like 894 of a class of 899. Yes that is creaming social rewards of insiders who were government employees lifetime.
He couldn't be an admiral because of complications, so he decided a way to stay big in his father's eyes was to be a great politician so he has been a government worker full time. The man knows nothing of how to run a business because he never has.
Us liberals don't talk about that much cuz we have too much class and because we figure McCain's ideas are stupid enough on their own. If we lose it is because we give our fellow citizens too much credit for seeing the obvious.

Interesting posts, these are. The temperaments displayed are to be applauded, as tempers have crested below boil. That's progress, people. Wonderful! Even more interesting is that these posts show data that, in my opinion, reflex
opinions across the country. And the bottom line is ... R-A-C-E.
It is classic racism when a person "hates" on a stranger simply because of the color of his skin.
When the greatest nation in the world finds itself facing economic collapse, it's somebody's fault, folks. And love it or hate it, Bush has been commander-in-chief these past eight years, and here we are.
Barack Obama, arguably, has been the voice of reason in this election race. His platform of fairness and change should be a welcoming opportunity for a nation at war and with its infrastructure crumbling.
John McCain has been promising little more than age and experience, a ''trust me, just by this car" approach. Well, any 72 year-old "warrior" who stands before millions and calls himself a maverick while spewing spittle and berating his opponent is more bully than brave. Is that how he hopes to conduct foreign affairs, with iron-fisted gestures and denigrating words (and bombs?) while refusing to sit across the table and look them in the eye?
But does this or anything else matter more than the color of Obama's skin? Probably not.
In America, nothing matters more than race. And come November, even some of the rocking chair-momma Obama supporters will pull the lever for John McCain. And that's the saddest part of the whole story, because we'll keep doing what we're doing for next 4 years, which has been steeply declining. Barring a miracle, Senator Obama will be banished to the sidelined shores with John Kerry and Al Gore. Because when it comes to electing the face of this nation, America IS Mississippi.

Classylady,
it's not the people of the companies that need bailing out - the executives are making millions silly girl.
It's the entity, seperate from the people, the corporations that have been drained of funds that need to be bailed out. The Democrats have you fooled - you think Republicans are the Big Business people - HA!! These CEO's making hundreds of millions of $$$$$ are DEMOCRATS!!!! Wake up people!!! you are being swindled.
yeahuhuhuhuh
Bill Clinton is a Democrat , Barney Franks is a Democrat - these are the guys that caused the deregulation 12 years ago. In 2005 McCain submitted reform, Democrats blocked it. 2002, Bush also tried, along with Social Security reform, the Democrats blocked it. All this time Barney Franks has been chairman of the Senate Committee that oversees financial issues for the country. He pushed hard to allow risky loans to low income -- people making $30,000 a year could get financed for homes over $200,000. Big Problem!!
come on wake up, quit being selfish and put your COUNTRY FIRST!!!

"huhuh, It's ironic that you continue to blame the Republicans for this financial crisis. Surely a man of your intelligence can understand it originated with the Clinton administration and congressional parties on both sides ignored numerous warnings about Fannie and Freddy."
When the House, the Senate, and the Adminstration are ALL Republican, they can do an awful lot. They didn't during those times you complain about.
The Republicans were in charge of the congress when Clinton signed the legislation they crafted, though Clinton wanted something for different reasons, the original bill was OK. Things have been changed and many other de-regulation factors have been at play. You only mention the plan as Clinton's yet Republicans crafted the law and supported it overwhelmingly. Congress crafts laws, presidents suggest what they would like to do.
quote "...the GOP Congress passed this bill. It passed 389 - 43 in the House and 92 - 8 in the Senate. Only 1 Republican Congressman voted against it (41 Democrats and 1 Independent voted nay)"
Republicans were in charge for 6 of Bush's 8 years after the Clinton initiative. They should have dealt with subsequent legal changes, further deregulation and if there was anything wrong they should have dealt with it. If the present Democratic Congress would have tried to re-regulate Bush would have vetoed it unless he got other things he wanted. That's what you get when you're a hard-ass -- people can't work with you.
Is that plain enough for you? Those sites you read all the time are bogus. They play you like a fool just like they did on the poll misinformation they gave you. They know you are stupid or jsut want to hate and they want your money and your vote.
You would do better to read your nut articles from those people and then immediately as a project start googling and find out for yourself how they bent the truth.

Happybunny, of the 90 minutes of debate, 45 of those minutes were dedicated to the economy. Foreign policy came up in the second half.
Why would bringing Reagan up so many times be bothersome, given the emphasis on economics?
Ever heard of Reaganomics? There were lots of good ideas and intentions behind Reagan's "Program for Economic Recovery" and as time progressed, while a lot of his goals were not acheived, government spending was at least kept in check. However, Reagan's plan called for LESS REGULATION of oil, phone, cable, and other prices. In fact, it was point #3 in his four point plan, enacted in 1981. Reduced regulation is a large part of why we're in the financial crisis that we're in now.
Additionally, the way America is viewed by the rest of the world IS important. We've lost a lot of international respect over the Bush years and that could make a major difference to our safety as a country. We have an outstanding dependency on foreign imports and we are fostering a lot of growing animosity from other parts of the world with our presence and our inability to look past our own cultural self-righteousness as a country. Here's a big "What if..?"..
Okay, let's drill the hell out of our own oil (a finite resource, of which our country uses 25% of the worlds' supply and we only have 3% of the worlds' supply to drill that belongs to us). The BEST estimate that I've seen about our ability to sustain ourselves on our own oil is 67 years, and that number is freely touted as a "best case scenario". That's at least part of why most of our oil comes from overseas. So let's say that we finally p*** off enough Middle Eastern countries that they HALT all oil sales to us, and offer OTHER countries our share of the oil in exchange for their allegiance.
We are viewed by many other countries as the "bully" of the world's playground. This scenario is NOT an unlikely one. If we maintain our dependence on OIL and we keep ignoring biodiesel, wind-power, solar power, and any other sustanable power resource in favor of "oh no, let's just tap out all the oil we can, that'll fix it", we're screwed. We simply don't have enough oil to maintain the oil-guzzling lifestyle of America in its current state. In the process of grasping for oil like it's going to save us and last forever, we're handing over a weakness, a DEPENDENCY, that an enemy can use against us.
We need alternative power and fuel options. Period. The more emphasis we put on drilling for this oil which will run out and only adds to pollution, the more distance we put between ourselves and the sustainability of our way of life. China's already widely producing and using NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles). We're being left in the dust because we're too worried about proving a point or doing anything differently, which seems to be the Republican way of doing anything.. discredit the new, wish for the old, condemn progress, generate fear.

Krogers,
I take it that when you refer to me as silly girl, you are being sarcastic, therefore I will take it that way. But it doesn't matter whether it is the Democrats or the Republicans that need bailing out, it is the middle class citizens who are being asked to foot the bill. I still say that the economy is headed to hell in a hand basket and something needs to be done to fix it-- Republican or Democrat.

huhuh, that all sounds well and good, as I previously mentioned, I think both parties are to blame but it originated with Clinton. Bush tried numerous times to warn Congress to no avail and your party was padding his pockets with the entire scandalous mess.
I have heard a lot of talk about deregulation, I have yet to hear any specific examples. In my opinion, more regulation has been added to the financial sector i.e. putting the Community Reinvestment Act on steroids, Sarbanes Oxley, the Patriot Act, etc. etc. etc.

And how long can you blame Clinton for what the Republican Congress does? How many years do you blame Clinton?
He passed no constitutional amendments on this matter.
Apologize for blaming it all on Clinton. Say "I'm sorry. Bush should have fixed it or the Republicans who ran our government all those years. I'm sorry for excusing them and blaming Clinton. I know things constantly need to be fixed and the Republicans were all corrupt -- I just read what those sites told me and they never said Republicans wrote the bills."

I did not like George Bush, I don't care for McCain, but I do feel that he is the best choice among those given. Obama and his grand plans make no sense to me, in fact I have actual nightmares about an Obama administration. I would truly rather find some desolate island and live like Gilligan versus what we have in store under an Obama regime.
He cannot provide the items that he initially promised to get everyone on board. He admits this. He doesn't understand foreign relations and will get himself or someone else killed. I believe he has the potential to start WW3, right after he reduces our military to a level that we are sitting ducks, These things scare me to death!

It is not those virtues but the people that are selling them for a vote that are crooked. We need to go sit down some time without anyone to grandstand for and I bet I could show you some stuff that would curl your toes.
I too would like a capitalist and conservative world -- a real conservative world -- and honestly there comes that time you have to put your crooked brother in law in prison for being a lying sack of dung to straighten himself up. There is just no alternative right now to the Democrats.

I don't propose we take from the rich and give to the poor, to be honest there has to be a better way of dealing with it. It's not fair to take from big business because of their wealth. Hypothetically, everyone has an equal chance a prsonal achievement but some are at a severe disadvantage. I mean why was my education form K-12 free but when received my B.S. I had paid the college institution over $25,000. I did that. Now I'm in my third year at LAW SCHOOL paying $21,000 + a year. Someone please explain that to me. Let me guess it's because my grade school years were public and college is not. Please someone "Justify My Thug"? Believe it or not, I don't care. I care about my country, the United States of America, and out of those running, McCain will do a better job. And if he dies, well I can skin a deer and I went to 4 diffferent colleges before getting a degree so I guess I'm not far off on Palin.

1) corporations and rich folks are paying 35% of their income in fed taxes, that's who is footing the bills for the gov't these days- 90% of fed revenue is paid by 10% of the population
2) middle class are paying way less 0-20%, so are NOT footing the bill, just paying their fair share, like me - I don't mind paying my fair share, Bush has cut our taxes already, I want a strong military, I don't mind paying my fair share. But I want all the pork CUT.
3) if you don't pay taxes you shouldn't get the privelidge of voting
4) USMC you are an educated liberal fool that believes in theoretical conspiracies that have no actual basis, you and your kind - slandering, thieving lawyers are the scum that have fouled up our society, you will have no problem paying back your school debt, unless you are a looser of a lawyer. Get your head straight and fight for what is right if you want to truly prosper.
5) southernwoman - I guess you are not aware that Alaska was the only USA property that was actually invaded in WWII, by the Japanese on the Aleutian Islands. If you do not consider the proximity of Alaska to Russia, being seperated by only the Bering STrait, then you are dimwitted indeed. Russia has high hopes of seizing territory in the Artic Region and we need to keep a close eye on that, not allowing them to have the precious natural resources that are there.

d black - your information is incorrect, I have heard that 3% figure,
but that is way wrong
have you not heard about the oil field in Montana - bigger than all the oil Saudi Arabia ever had. Then there is more oil off the coast of California, oil in Alaska, more deep oil in Gulf of Mexico, more oil off the coast of Florida, then there is the natural gas that there is so much of we can't even come up with an estimate and then there is the coal, plus nuclear, wind, solar - we don't need foreign oil- but we need to drill now as a buffer while we develop alternative sources. I remember when farmers were driving around running trucks on natural gas - it's easy to convert gas engines to natural gas. So DRILL BABY DRILL!!!! There are also conversion processes like Rentech. Democrats are destroying our country by 1) attempting to redistribute the wealth, taking money from those who know how to use and give it to those that would squander it -- just exactly what has happened with the mortgage crisis. 2) causing us to transfer our wealth overseas for foreign oil, devaluing the dollar and making us dependent to the point of threatening national security and economic implosion.
PLEASE--I BEG YOU--- put aside your petty selfishness and racism and preconceptions of republican big business conspiracy and do some honest homework , then come NOV 4--VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN --- COUNTRY FIRST!!!

) southernwoman - I guess you are not aware that Alaska was the only USA property that was actually invaded in WWII, by the Japanese on the Aleutian Islands. If you do not consider the proximity of Alaska to Russia, being seperated by only the Bering STrait, then you are dimwitted indeed. Russia has high hopes of seizing territory in the Artic Region and we need to keep a close eye on that, not allowing them to have the precious natural resources that are there.
My response: And how do these facts substantiate Sarah Palin's international relations experience?
Does she meet Putin and hold discussions on the (melting) ice?
I live close to a lot of things that I don't know anything about.
Can we please discuss/argue points with respect and without insults.

hey ted - well I can relate to that, actually I think most people have their minds made up, after all-- it's already been a year of campaigning -- Obama, Obama, Obama is banging in my ears and I'm tired of hearing his name to tell you the truth. I'm suffering from the Barrack attack.
happybunnny- yep, of course if he is elected, he will face fierce opposition in Congress, and after the first term he will be gone, plus his shenanigins, along with the overwhelming disaproval of the current Democratic Congress, will cause more Republicans to be elected in Congress. That would be good I think.
I hope it doesn't come to that though, I think McCain would be better for the country. He can reach across the aisle. But I hope we still get more Republicans in Congress - I'm voting for Wicker.
and yes - Obama fluff is just that - waggling carrots in front of everyone promising universal healthcare, America will become loved by the world once again, yet Iran will nuke us along with Israel plus wipe out our troops in the MiddleEast, we will miraculously have no need for oil anymore, our cars will run on -- what was that?? uh yeah wind, sun rays of course. Everyone will have a job because companies will have to pay for insurance, full benefit packages plus higher wages and pay higher taxes, forget about being broke and out of business. OH, don't forget about free college - just serve in the Peace Corp for, well he never said how long, and you get $4000 for college, like that will do much good after you've contracted some jungle disease or been killed by some whacko terrorist islamic fanatic in some third world country. I don't think so.
What fools - like I said - selfish and shortsighted, don't care about the country surviving into the future, just concerned what they can get for free. Maybe Obama will pass out cellphones, pay our car notes, our mortgages and bad debt will be forgiven, UTOPIA ?? NOT - the USA will be on a hellbound train. Am I missing something ?- because that is what Obama is promising - he will have the government take care of you and all your needs, all you have to do is vote for him, if you want to ruin the country.

if I tell you much more I will be divulging national security secrets and might be arrested
oh you silly girl, she is a governor with high approval and with Russia next door she is obviously up to date and vigilant of the situation
you just don't like her for some gut reason and can't control yourself enough to actually rise above your emotions to analyze objectively the facts of her executive experience and appreciate her achievements
that's ok, there will be more of us that do like her and do appreciate her experience and achievements
you are just focusing on a lame democrat talking point

Krogers,
Sarah Palin is a likeable enough woman. My position is that she is not qualified to be vice president of the United States of America. I'm sure the logistical details of Russian surveillance had been worked out in Alaska before she was born.
Her religion also scares me:
I read on the internet that her ex-pastor said that anyone who criticized President Bush (or voted for John Kerry) was bound straight for hell.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on September 27, 2008 at 6:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)
well Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas, and not well liked.
George Bush was governor of Texas, sad to say seems like some folks don't like him either
Ronald Reagen was governor of California
Jimmy Carter governor of Georgia? I might be wrong on that.
Fox News analysts were talking about how much MORE unacceptable a senator is than a governor based on historical election results- more governors being elected than senators - thus reasoning that most folks appreciate the executive decision making experience that governors accumulate
so that disqualifies your unfounded belief, doesn't it?
and if her religion scares you, well don't you think you should then fairly re-evaluate Obama's religion - have you forgotten Rev Wright, and that nutty white priest that preaches at the same black church now, not that that is the issue, just using that to describe him because I forget his name, but those guys are fanatics that are racist and anti-American and are proud of it
so it seems your reasoning is biased and not objective
I haven't heard anything about her religion, but if she's religious that should be a good thing. I do know she is a highly approved of governor, has a wonderful family, and started out as a mayor and worked her way up. I like her stance on the important issues, she has managed to lay the groundwork for that pipeline from Alaska to the mainland of the USA for natural gas, she beat Russia on fishing rights, she stomped out corruption in Alaskan politics, she refused to participate in pork barrel politics by declining the bridge to nowhere. I think she is down-to-earth and can relate to folks like you and me and do what is right for our country. Alaska has a balanced budget and the people of Alaska love her, she played hockey in the men's league, she was also a beauty queen and competed in beauty pageants, LOL, and we know how viscious that can be. She seems like a winner to me and I like her, my gut feeling is she is rock solid and will put her COUNTRY FIRST.

sayitloud...I've been waiting months for someone to mention the wealth of Obama. I've kept my thoughts to myself wondering if anyone else would pick up on this important matter. A poor single mother sends her son to poor grandparents and when he shows up on the scene he lives in a million dollar home and buys the extra land next to his home so no one else can build near him. What's he afraid of? Is he scared someone will get too close and see when maybe his friends (our enemies) come a calling with a truck load of cash for him to further his campaign. Did he ever help Clinton with her debt as he promised? Never heard anymore about that. For all you Obama fans, I wish one of you could be that fly on the wall so you can watch as the Clinton's cast their secret vote for McCain. Clinton said on tv the other night that he (McCain) would make a fine leader for America. No one, not even the news casters have made a mention of that. When he said it, the subject was quickly changed. What about Obama mentioning Medicare and cutting corners there? Again the subject was quickly changed. You Obama people better think long and hard before destroying America. I don't vote by party. I vote the American way. I VOTE FOR AMERICA.

Should McCain be elected, Sarah Palin could possibly become president very quickly.

krogers--Keep drinking the Kool-Aid. Ruin the country--lol! Republicans should know quite about about that after having inflicted eight years of Bush-Cheney skulduggery on our nation. Let's have a quick look at the accomplishments of two terms of Republican governance:
--Inheriting a healthy budget from the previous administration, and turning it into a half-trillion dollar deficit.
--Amplifying deficit by instituting tax cuts, the bulk of which most benefit those in the top 10% of incomes. McCain indicates he will maintain $300 billion in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Middle class Republicans cheer wildly and again line up to vote against their own economic interests.
--Plunging us into a war in a theater of dubious importance, on the basis of fabricated evidence of weapons of mass destruction; pricetag for said war approaches $1 trillion--meanwhile bin Laden and al Zawahari still live, the Taliban has revived in Afghanistan, and a resurgent Al Qaeda is at pre-9/11 strength, and active in sixty countries. McCain makes it clear that Iraq will remain the primary focus of his administation's war policy.
--While continuing to heed Reagan's mantra that the best government is always least government, and that the invisible hand of the market is most capable of self-regulation, the Bush administration essentially frees Wall Street and corporate America from any effective oversight. Predictably, unfettered supply-side capitalism plunges the national economy into the crapper.
Solid work, Republicans. Your leaders have done far more damage in the last eight years (six of which your party also controlled both houses of Congress) than any administration--Democratic or Republican--in American history. History will not be kind to you. You have no more credibility. Now step aside so this country can begin the painful process of repairing the wreckage of your bankrupt political ideology and self-serving economic policies.
By the way--I scored the debate more or less even.

I am a woman and not the least bit threatened by her, that's silly but true of many. I think she seems to have excellent values, a high level of confidence, and a true American.
She, like John McCain is not afraid to go after what she believes in which is a character trait we need in the next administration. We are facing a lot of challenges both globally and on the home front and we need a strong leadership team, not a greedy yes man that's just in it for himself and those shady characters who helped him along behind the scenes.

It's scary that America is so divided, and that we have people living here like Oldhippie01 and Yeahuhuh... Our founding fathers must be rolling over in their graves... I'll stick to the conservative view of the constitution vs. the liberal view of it where you pretty much interper it as you want.... Its heart breaking to live in a culture consumed by filth, drugs, moral standards of alley cats, and hey, thats ok as far as the media is concerned, but God is a "dirty" word in their eyes.... We have our priorities all messed up..... but hey, we are a culture where everything is based on looks, and does not matter if there is no substance there......... God help this country.... I'd like to make the statement like Whoopi Goldberg and Alec Baldwin stated several years ago, that if Bush won, they were moving to another country... Believe me, if there was one better to move to if Obama did win, I would be gone.... and after he got through with this country, we might all be looking for a new country to relocate to.... I love the class of the liberal media, and the whiney, temper trantrum throwing dems that are so radical and in your face..... just disgusting, better yet, nauseating.... Oh Lord, please bless this country, and I pray that you send us a leader that knows what he is talking about, and has leadership capabilities. Please help rid this great nation of ours with ndividuals who expect everything to be given to them for nothing, and have no respect for their fellow man...... AMEN!

Non-denominational simply means she belongs to a church which is NOT part of a main-stream denomination such as Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, etc. Some churchs do belong to small groups of like minded church groups, some don't. The Obama's have made it clear they TURNED DOWN the high paying jobs so they could do the community development in Chicago. Then he fell in with the fat cat Chicago politicians and was elected to Illinois Senate and then on to DC as Illinois US Senator. UH, little mention of the fact that the welfare of the Chicago neighborhoods he tried so hard to help, BENEFITED NO CHANGE, all for naught, he failed. Good intentions, but still the hellacious ghetto before he came to miraculously provide jobtraining and bring in jobs. Obama has NO Beneficial Executive Experience. NONE< NADA<NAUGHT>NILL> NONE> ZERO do you get it? He's propped up by fat cats out of Chicago. He's an overblown arrogant whipper-snapper and McCain is holding back because he's a humble hero and wants to act respectfully, he came close to blasting Obama verbally last night when he was talking about Akmadinejad ( I know I spelled that wrong) and Obama being DANGEROUS, beyond nieve. I think you guys are on to something about Obama's attitude of respect for others as displayed by the way he was addressing McCain. Obama kept glaring at McCain, and McCain refrained from locking eyes with him, to keep his temper in check I think. You know he was not afraid, anyone that's spent five years in the Hanoi Hilton fears nothing.
So you have a point. I have heard McCain say that Obama made 4 million $ last year, how did he do that as Senator??
We need to know more about his finances.

He understands if we want to keep jobs in this country then we have to offer incentives . Money talks . I don't like it anymore than the rest of you but its a fact . Why do you suppose obama is playing the class game . It is a very old tactic politicians have used . The confederacy used it to get southern men to fight in the civil war for states rights instead of slavery . But that's another story . Right here and now we need to keep whatever companies we have left from moving overseas . Give them a tax break and maybe, just maybe we can keep middle class people , which are the life blood of this country , here in these good ole United States of America ! Do ya'll want to be a land of rich or poor ? No in beteen . No middle class with hard working moral values ? If that's what you want vote for obama . In the meantime maybe the tooth fairy will come or obamas Hollywood will write him a script with a happy ending .because that's the only way obama can get America out of this mess .

Well, I've read all of this, and......we do live in the south, something I happen to be very proud of. But no one has mentioned that we also live very close to several nuclear plants and if they go BOOM, a lot of us will not live here anymore, because we will not exist. And, if Obama is the president (heaven forbid), I truly believe the terrorists will be striking us again, remember he will talk to them whenever he wants. We all know they listen so well. Personally, I want someone in there that the terrorists know won't be afraid to defend us. I know that my family is cleaning our guns and buying extra ammo, because there is the possibility of us (Americans) fighting them in our own backyards. They hit us once and anybody that thinks they won't do it again is nuts. Especially, if our president is someone who doesn't believe we need our military. My thinking is NOBAMA! NOBAMA!

Wow, her looks may just be an illusion caused by a witchcraft spell which also causes you to lust for her. Pray and ask God to bind the Spirit of Lust from you. (Mc=son of) Cain and Lilith (witch & seductress). Don't let Cin rule over America from the White House. They only want it because they are greedy and already have everything else that money can buy. They even admit to being liars, drug addicts, and thieves and you can't comprehend what they are saying because of the witchcraft spell. Wakeup and pray, call on Jesus to send his holy angels to surround you and protect you from all evil.

OldGrand if I am seriously demented then I wouldn't know it and couldn't tell you, right? If I am seriously demented then God will also take that into consideration when he judges me come judgement day, but for the Republicans to spread fear against Obama by claiming him to be the anti christ, even though they are supposed to be of sound mind, then God will surely hold them accountable for everyone of their lies. So whether or not I am demented is up to God. Obama is not the anti-christ, but McCain may surely be the Beast, because Bush is the anti-christ. It probably doesn't really matter who we vote for because it's already in motion and the end is near. Just don't take the mark. God bless you and have a nice day.

RATS ARE A POLITICAL NECESSITY
Both parties have their alley rats they depend on for election. These alley rats are lazy folks -- either in their lifestyles or in their mental workings -- and some are far more dangerous than others. The rats of both parties are narrow-vision types that put off seeing what is happening in favor of seeing narrow, lazy, wrong ideals.
RATS OF THE DEMOCRATS
Democrats have the welfare crowd -- many of which don't even vote -- and some of which are on welfare for just reason. When they do, they vote Democrat for narrow self interest. The majority of Democratic voters are not in this group. The rats ostensibly include the blacks so reviled by southern GOP supporters when they work the system, but only represent a small portion of the 15% blacks in the population. There are other Democratic core groups claimed as rats by the other side, labor who have no capital but their labor, environmentalists who champion proper use of public resources, those who advance pro-choice reproductive stances, and socialists. Understanding these groups depends on an understanding of the claims against them, but by and large their proponets are arguably honest about their insistences.
REPUBLICAN PET RATS
Republicans have their slow-thinking, narrow-interest, special interest voters, too. Tax turtles who hate the idea of using public money to help people, but if someone could use killing overseas in our interest they are the first to volunteer someone else to use taxpayer money to do it. These guys got us terror in the Middle East -- then justify their choice by telling us that even if we did quit killing muslim people they would try to invade us on their camels, anyway.
Another curious rat of the right is the government power lobby in the form of anti-choice voters, who don't really see much else as an issue and allow their politcal representatives to lie like dogs othrwise. They believe in government power so much they would use the government to compel po-ass crackhead moms and everybody else to bear unwanted children. Then these same folks and the party that supports them insists on not getting involved in even health care guarantees for the children -- even though the reason the choice was important to the mother was that the child would be unwanted and/or reared in poverty. They compel others to bring children into a world of tragedy in the name of their own ideological fears of God's punishment. Their party's stance on health care, pollution and war shows how much their party represents the sacredness of human life. continued....

Another GOP plague group is the ideology crowd in love with the idea of free enterprise so much that if you sold them a bag of anthrax with a free enterprise label they would buy one -- over another brand -- without looking at what they bought. These people are special fools and should not be confused with the beauty of free enterprise.
These poor fools don't realize that they come into this world paying socialist taxes -- a doctor's fees artificially propped up by laws, ungodly expensive drugs protected by patent protected by government decree and artificially propped up by import regulation, public natural resources claimed by acts of money and coerced law -- then sold back to the consumers who owned them at world prices.
These guys already protect layer after layer of socialist protections for capital channels of money from the poorest to those least stressed -- FDA standards make our foods safer -- and expensive -- but limit competition, DEA rules decree man has no choice of even many natural drugs unless he pays doctors or the alcohol industry, a penal industry made and fueled by socialist edicts, many of which are simply stupid. I don't argue against these protections, but let's call them what they are.
Even appear in public in the natural state and you must pay the government to protect you from yourself due to socialist rulings that are a blanket over our land. These are only the most obvious of the socialist props that our "free" enterprise system runs on. The tip of our iceberg. Each industry has bought layer after layer of socialist protection of their interests -- most notably bought even more freely from Republicans as it has Democrats.
These free-enterprise nuts never bother to notice exactly how many laws are on the books already that will never be repealed. Actually they are in love with an idea that died long ago -- their free enterprise efforts once enacted by congress privatize profit but do so at public expense on a backdrop of socialist profit guarantees that protect industry and those who already have money. And they deny representation to everyone who cannot buy their way into the system -- man means nothing per se -- a corporation with full pockets has the legal status of a voter but with endless power$ to coerce -- it is money and power that speaks for these people while the vocal lazy nuts of the movement sit in relative poverty and cheer to be victimized by voting for free enterprise they never had. continued....

I don't want to hear any more Repubs screaming about Obama and the proliferation of welfare after the events of the past month on Wall Street. I find it both ironic and nauseating that the Reaganite apostles of deregulation and laissez-faire are now running to the US government to bail out their greedy a$$es. I guess it's okay for the rich and corporate America to be the beneficiaries of government largesse, but heaven forbid if the poor receive help from the government. To top it off, the Repubs are now posturing that they oppose the bailout plan--rank hypocrisy and total bs. I also am amused how so many of my Republican friends (yes, I have many) are falling all over themselves to distance themselves from GW Bush, telling me that "he's not a real conservative." Well, dadgum, he was enough of a conservative for you to elect him to two terms. Face it, folks, your boy and your party have thoroughly screwed this country for eight solid years. Thanks so much for the crushing burden of debt, and myriad other problems we will bequeath to the generations on the basis of the political, economic and social ideology you so cherish. The precise moment at which our nation passed the apogee of it's power can be pinpointed as having taken place during years of the Bush/Cheney administration. During that time under Republican leadership we have mortgaged our nation's future to the Chinese holders of our debt, become virtual pariahs in the international community, brought down the pillars of American capitalism on top of us by abdicating all regulatory responsibility while extravagantly rewarding the captains of finance and industry who brought us to this place. And you want four more years of this?
One more thing--much has been made that Sarah Palin's rise represents a "feel good" American story. Why her story, and not Obama's? His is a remarkable story--he is a self-made man who worked hard, got an education, and made it on his own. In short, his is an example of an American success story Republicans and Democrats get all dewy-eyed over. I would bet if Obama were a Republican, you folks would adore him because he embodies the very qualities you claim your party venerates. But you are so blinded by your irrational hatred of the Democratic party (even as your own party screws you over and over), that you dismiss Obama as a member of the elite, and as an effete liberal. What a sad day it is in America when an individual is despised because he is well-educated, and because he speaks in complete sentences.

southernwoman, that reference is to the time-honored pineywoods practice of "stump-training" and refers to an act of bestiality perpetrated to one's livestock, usually cattle. I used it to our Mississippi backwoods audience to signal I had voluntarily made myself vulnerable and expected their...attention. Sorry if that's in poor taste, but I am trying to relate, he,he!
Tom -- Amen. It's one thing for them to have elected Bush on a tired set of political strategies (the decision by judge instead of electorate thing was new, however). But for them to not notice what he was doing, not say anything to their representatives to stop it, and then to come to us again with someone else to slur as reason they should get power again is priceless!
The Republican party has found a strategy to select the simplest of voters and to appease them and encourage them to misunderstand. It has become a cultural movement, a bonding ritual, a religious crusade, and a coffin nail for our culture.

I don't know why it is so hard for some people to understand that those of us who oppose Obama , really DON'T care what color he is. You guys are the ones who make it a race thing. I find some of his ideas good, when he first came on the scene I found myself thinking "hey this is a great man", then I started listening to what he really doesn't say, reading his background and bills he has pushed through and I want nothing to do with him. AND IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT HIS ETHNIC HISTORY IS TO ME!!!
Believe it or not, I don't care. I care about my country, the United States of America, and out of those running, McCain will do a better job. And if he dies, well I can skin a deer and I went to 4 diffferent colleges before getting a degree so I guess I'm not far off on Palin.

From the beginning of Obama's campaign, anyone who disagreed with his policies was "racist". This was done to Democrats and now to Republicans. At first I thought Obama would personally stay above the race-card politics, but then I watched him jump right in with both feet. The racial trash spewed from the Obama supporters is simply a smokescreen for people hiding from the real issues.

So Grandad, if I report on what I experience, and even Sammoron says he knows of a lot of white Democrats who say the same thing about people's racial feelings, that we should not recognize that or talk about it?
If you look at how much we write and talk about issues, I don't think your charge holds water on this forum, and not much in the press in general.
We talk about issues, but there is something that keeps otherwise proud conservatives from recognizing they have been grievously betrayed and they have no plans for anything different if you listen to their candidate. Something keeps them from voting against the crooks.
If after arguing with someone like Obamayamama for an hour he writes -- what race are you, maybe that could explain a lot? That there is not race at the bottom of some of those issues?
I think the issue is cultural -- people don't mind black genes as long as they are not in the family. It's culture.
They don't like welfare (especially for lazy blacks)
They don't like taxes (to pay for welfare so blacks can spend their money on Cadillacs)
They don't like socialism (to pay for welfare)
They don't like socialized medicine (to cover the uncovered who are most often black)
They don't like Barack (because to them, he stands for all the above)
Does it matter if they admit they don't like blacks because they think almost all of them are on welfare? C'mon man let's be honest -- at least about what's happening in the south.

You were in a conversation awhile back ,( with another Poster) about "Cults" and one of the ways you can identify a Cult member is listening for the "Code words" they all use. The republicans are the same way. Thats the way "Brain washing" works, they just keep repeating the "Code words" to them until it becomes programed into their heads. Thats whi I don't bother trying to "Exorcise" them, I just duck in and jerk their chain and leave them shaking their fist at their Monitors, LMAO!!!

Yeahuhuh, There you go again.... I'm not being dishonest. If person "X" says that he/she is going to vote for McCain and not Obama and then gives political reasons, it is wrong for person "Y" to jump in and say "no, your REAL reason is racism". I find that sort of racial card playing disgusting because it totally removes the issues from the equation.
So YOU please be honest and admit that racial card playing is involved and in a very large way.
I'll freely admit that outright racism, on both sides, is also involved by some. My guess is that you and I would disagree to what extent. :(

Now Grandad I don't think you will find me saying that there is no such thing as a pure ideological basis for some folks always voting Republican. And I think you will see me waiting veeeeery patiently and arguing on subject until they reveal their bias themselves.
Now you admit that based on the truth of my listing above, there are a lot of people who seek politically correct ways of opposing Obama, but they hold a cultural bias that would keep them from treating blacks in their homes and communities like they would treat whites, except where required by custom and law. For instance if selling a house and it could not be detected, to bend the rules to protect their neighbors from a sale to a black if another buyer was available.
Alot of whites innocently do not socialize with blacks or have many real friends that are blacks despite black prevalence in our community. There's nothing wrong with them choosing to be who they are. Let's just call it what it is. It does have political ramifications.

Race is most definitely a factor in this election! The media can not bring up Obama's name without referring to him as "the first black candidate for president of the United States!" Historically, his race is important. The color of his skin will determine to a certain extent who the next president is. There will be those who will vote for him for no other reason than he is black, just as there will be those who could never vote for a black man. I personally think that the number of votes cast this way will be enough to determine the outcome of the election.

I expect New Mexico to be Blue. South Florida will be Blue but overall Florida is probably up for grabs. The panhandle is firmly red. The Rio Grande valley counties will certainly be Blue but Texas will be Red at the end of the count. Colorado will also be up for grabs with the San Luis Valley, the Front Range cities and the ski towns being firmly Blue.

Sarah Palin told a grad student at a Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant last night that she approves going into Pakistan from Afghanistan to track terrorists and, in doing so, agreed with Barack Obama's position stated during the presidential debate, which John McCain disagreed with.
John McCain tried to "fix" this in an interview today mumbling something about people "sticking microphones in Sarah Palin's face".
John McCain had said earlier that he would track Bin Laden to the gates of hell. Apparently that does not include Pakistan.
Lame excuses....hyperbole....

southernwoman, Sarah Palin is not a candidate for president of the United States. Obama is and the thought that he says he would send troops across Pakistan's borders to pursue terrorists sends chills down my spine. On one hand he is promising people an end to the war by bringing our troops home regardless of the outcome. On the other he said in the debate that there were 3 times as many troops in Iraq as there are in Afganistan and he thinks the forces should be increased there. Is he bringing them home or sending them to Afganistan? Or perhaps Pakistan? Both parties are guilty of telling the people what they want to hear whether they can deliver or not. I wish it were possible to charge politicians who don't at least try to keep their campaign promises with fraud!

Wonderingirl you need to stop and think this out. I'll let southerngirl reply, too but I gotta say something about what you said.
Sarah Palin IS a candidate for president -- an UNELECTED president, since her running mate is THE OLDEST to ever be inaugurated ever to win, already had cancer, and ain't got the spring in his step he once did.. They say Reagan was already showing signs of Alzheimers when in his second term, so the idea that age and Palin are not an issue here is crazy - IT IS A NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE.
Regarding Pakistan -- THE PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN commented on Barack's comments last week. Ali Zardari stated out loud his lack of a problem with Obama's statement. He said that Barack's statement that IF Pakistan won't act on intel that we would is perfectly reasonable because PAKISTAN WILL if the intel is good enough -- he found NO problem with Obama's statement. That makes McCain's misinformation about Barack's statement look stupid to everybody except the people his talking point manipulates.
Both the points you make are planned talking points designed to misinform you, and that is what McCain is doing for you right now. They are non issues or distortions of fact. Sarah Palin IS a presidential candidate in practical terms, and Pakistan relations are NOT in jeopardy as McCain has implied.
These talking points are designed in back rooms to confuse you and make you fearful. That is the kind of president you would be electing, and you should not try to hide that fact or obscure it with the other fact that all politicians lie about something -- these are gigantic lies, strategic lies and lies your own candidate offers YOU in return for your willingness to listen.
Barack is not talking about sending every troop division in Iraq to Afghanistan so stop putting words in his mouth about that, too. Jesus God how can you folks NOT see the errors in your speech? How can Republicans be God's party with so many lies? It looks like you guys would rather lie than tell the truth period --maybe that's why some folks think God would be happier with Republicans -- that's a big lie, too. Consider the source!
How could you ever tell if politicians were changed if you will repeat their lies as if they were the truth?????? That's a cop-out.

War kills innocent babies, their mamma's and their daddy's too, Freedom. They're maybe too far away for you to notice and care.
Barack doesn't want to kill babies. He doesn't want the government to be able to force people to have babies in homes where they would be abused or unwanted. He doesn't have that much faith in government and he does have that much faith in people's choosing for themselves.
You will burn in hell yourself lying about what other people want, and doing it to put a man in the White House whose party just killed thousands of babies. NOT allowed mothers to terminate their own pregnancies -- YOUR GOVERNMENT ACTUALLY KILLED THEM WITH YOUR TAXES.
Can't you even write a paragraph without lying?

freedom42 - what are your other reasons?
Are you rich (over 5 million according to McCain)?
Do you like the idea of babies being born and not having health care?
Do you like the idea of social security being privatized? - (let Wall Street take care of it?)
Are you against giving all young people a shot at getting a college education?
Are you against giving tax breaks to companies to return their operations, including manufacturing, to the US?
Would you like to return to the robber barron days?
Do you not like a free press, freedom of speech, separation of church and state?
There are no laws in this country forcing anyone to have an abortion, just as there are no laws forcing anyone to be consumed by greed, abuse power, and manipulate the voters.

Oh take a leap Grandad. I neither demanded nor implored the Lord to damn anything, nor did I use the term lightly.
My use of the word was to protect the truth from a liar, and I invoked the name of God to do it. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I called upon the Lord as the giver of reason.
The LIE is the problem. Calling on the Lord's name to help get a liar to choke up some humility before the Lord is just fine -- only in vain if the liar refuses to care about either the lie or the Lord. You can claim not to recognize it as a lie, and cut yourself slack that way -- then pretend you are defending the TRUTH about the Lord's name -- and that will be a lie.
Don't support a liar who is selling lies and then hide behind the Lord or religion. Step up to the plate man -- God gives us the choice to lie or not.
That is NOT using the Lord's name in vain. What, if the Devil disagrees and lying is OK, HE gets to say what is in VAIN?
THIS IS THE REASON YOUR PARTY IS DISTRUSTED SO MUCH!
Here's a challenge. If I am right and you were protecting lies, and that at the Lord of Truth's expense already, then that would make you guilty of idolatry for trying to silence my protest by invoking his other rules and protecting your own favored sin.
We are all going to have to -- in the name of civility AND the Lord -- shoot a bit higher and avoid the most blatant of lies as if it were a sin to utter them.

southernwoman...All McCain supports is creating government-managed accounts that would allow individuals to invest some portion of their Social Security payroll taxes in widely diversified stock or bond funds.
It is against FEDERAL LAW to deny health care to someone who needs it. It is illegal in this country. In addition, there are in nearly every city in America, hospitals who treat patients every day who have no way of paying. There are also thousands of clinics and programs to help those who can't pay catastrophic medical bills.
Obama admits there is no money fpr his socialist plans for healthcare or college. There are MANY grant programs available if you are black, the United Negro College Fund springs to mind. Pay for your own education like many of us had to!
I think you're confused, it's the democrats that are pushing for the Fairness Doctrine.
I am pro-choice but I am vehemently opposed to the partial birth abortions that Obama voted for. Imagine putting a baby in a linen closet to cry themselves to death. COLD HEARTED MURDER!

Saturday night, while on a stop for cheesesteaks in South Philadelphia, Gov. Sarah Palin was questioned by a Temple graduate student about whether the U.S. should cross the border from Afghanistan into Pakistan.
"If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, ABSOLUTELY, we should," Palin said.
Absolutely means she has no doubt. Glad to see she agrees with Obama on this but for it sounds like a Flip Flop for the Mccain/Palin team.
Mccain said of Pakistan on Larry King, "I'm not going to go there. And here's why, because Pakistan is a sovereign nation."
Obama's view is, "They are plotting to strike again... If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."

The ignorance in these posts is overwhelming. In my personal opinion neither of the candidates are the best choice for our country. But considering the "reasons" that people are deciding to vote for Obama (i.e. he's black, hope & change, etc.) really scares me that these people have the right to vote. I think there should be a test given to people that are over the age of 18 to see if they comprehend enough to not be considered mentally challenged or "slow". The test should not have anything to do with who you vote for but why? And the "reasons" mentioned above are not good ones. The "reasons" above would be like me voting for McCain because I wanted a chance to look at Palin's husband more often. You know, that's a thought. I have made my choice for president. And when someone asks me who I'm voting for & why, I'll just tell them McCain because Palin's husband is hot.

Back to the bailout meeting...The president, in order to let everybody be heard, deferred to various Democrats, and every one of the Democrats -- Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and Frank -- declined to speak and deferred to Obama. So Obama became the official Democrat spokesman in the meeting. This was to hype Obama's leadership and presidential aura and so forth. What happened next, the first thing out of Obama's mouth -- Paulson is in the meeting -- is he starts ripping the House Republican proposal and asks Paulson what he thinks of it.
This led Boehner and the other Republicans in there to think they have been sandbagged. We found out this morning that Obama had no clue -- because he was in transit doing other things, he had no clue -- what the House Republican position was. What happened was that on the way to the meeting sometime during the day, Obama's staff received an e-mail from Treasury Department employees who work for Paulson detailing the House Republican plan.
It ended up with Obama essentially chairing the meeting, with the meeting falling apart. The president was described as "beleaguered," trying to regain control of the meeting. McCain didn't say hardly anything. Everybody was yelling and screaming in there. McCain did not. He said, "We've gotta put these differences aside, work together," you know, typical McCain. "According to an Obama campaign source..."
Now this shows a true LACK of leadership on Obama's part.

EXACTLY what did you take issue with Rabbit?
The House guys didn't come to the table with a plan, just a couple of ideas of inclusion -- did they???
And Paulson said out of the box their ideas were not workable. Paulson said that. Obama asked Paulson what he thought, and asked the House GOP rep what he thought -- you got a whining complaint about THAT?
Now what is it you are whining about?
Bush gives a bailout proposal that not even a dead Republican would sign and you found a way to blame the Democrats for disunity?
Because nobody will hand over 700 billion dollars with no questions asked?????
That McCain wanted to be there, Bush called them both in, and BUSH couldn't run a meeting?
That somehow Pelosi and the Gang controlled the meeting that was held at the WHITE HOUSE?
Exactly what hoops do you think a Republican would have to jump through to get a 700 billion dollar check.

Albeit a small chance but maybe something that is important to me can be addressed if that person is elected. Obama's beliefs do scare me a bit. You guys are the ones that act like being a maverick qualifies you for something , and acting like one man can change the soul of the crooks of the GOP.
In fact, you say that one man can't do anything by themselves, then you say you vote the man -- based not even on his ability to run his party but just your morals.

I do NOT believe in having a whiney child, who sees something another kid in the mall is eating WHINING that he demands some, he wants some, etc. But the child thinks he is entitled.
So just for argument let's say Palin used earmarks, and Biden used earmarks. But Palin says she is an earmark fighter, a renegade, a crusader and that she hates earmarks, and gets folks all excited over how that is who she is, yet her record shows that is not right at all.
That makes Palin a liar and an earmark user. Biden, however, since he was never the one that claimed for political purposes that earmarks were always bad - well that makes Biden simply an earmark user. That is a character stain on Palin.
Do you see that? One reason I say the GOP picks stupid people is that this sort of obvious hypocrisy is not even noticed by most people who would support the governor.
In the same vein, happybunny, the whining simple-minded mathmatically confused former banker, who rails people to work their own way to success, acts like Bush is entitled to a 700 billion dollar check with no trouble, and acts like Democrats taking over Bush's meetings are meanies and he is entitled to more. I say he should be a big boy and run his own meetings, but bunny wants to whine.
bunny also got into a squabble the other day over the counting on a poll and accused a pollster of slanting results, but upon further examination Bunny thought her side was entitled to be one-half of the folks in the poll whether that is how the poll indicated the population thinking -- she insisted that somehow the extra percentage to make her views equal to the other side should have been stuck in there or it is unfair to her side.
Entitlement -- the trait of thinking that even if more than half the people don't agree with you, that your side deserves an equal hearing, equal control, etc. Nobody is worse at entitlement whining than conservatives -- they are so selfish they can't even understand the principle.

oldhippie, I guess what I'm trying to say in a "nice" way is that his religious beliefs are too psycho for my taste. I admit that some of the things you mentioned about McCain are bad but no one is without mistakes in life or choices in relationships that could be questionable. In my personal opinion his choice to divorce his first wife was the correct decision based on the facts of the matter. But again everyone has their own personal beliefs. I don't put people down if they honestly have a belief that differs from mine, it's their choice.

yeahuhuh, you seem very intelligent and I agree with portions of your post. Mainly the part about how the programs should be streamlined. That of course is not how it's done. Welfare, Social Security, Medicaid and other give away programs are given to many people who don't deserve or have never paid in to the "system". I am a registered democrat and have been for many years. I feel that if an independent candidate had a chance at winning, I would vote that direction. Unfortunately, we will always have the 2 parties and only the 2 because of people who only vote "party".

I'm wondering purple, have you seen the clip of the entire sermon that Wright's comments were taken from?
There was a link on here the other day. I also once felt Barack must have been a nut to go to that church.
But then I saw the entire sermon. It was about the chickens coming home to roost and how if we kill people -- even accidentally -- with our foreign policy that sooner or later we get what we dish out. I watched the sermon and ended up feeling that it would be good to listen to a preacher like that. It was not at all like the clips that were taken out of it.
Just wondering if you had seen the whole thing or if you just got the clipped information folks spurted out that is designed to make you feel that way.

Yeahuhuh, someone commented on how intelligent you are on this forum. I don't see you that way. You twist what anyone who disagrees with you says. You name call, refer to people as stupid, and call everyone liars if their opinion differs from yours. This shows such a lack of maturity on your part that you have to resort to being the bully of the playground in order to try to belittle others. The truly smart person can present their view without using childish tactics. I have no interest in pursuing any further comments with you even though I am sure you will try to bait me. So as you sit with your fingers posed above your keyboard ready to spit and spew a reply, know that your opinion is not anymore important than mine and neither is your vote. We each have one vote and I find great comfort in the fact that we are both free to cast it for the candidate of our choice.

Thank you for defending my posts wonderingirl. The intelligence comment was directed toward agreeing with streamlining the system. Which we all know is not going to happen. Although I have been a democrat for many years I feel that the democratic candidates seem to want to give into the welfare system way too much. Instead of a gimme, gimme program which all of them have become let's get the capable off the couch and on to work. Whether it's at a fast food restaurant or a grocery store. Assistance should be used in times of need, not all times. If you are on welfare then when you come in to get it you will be covered for 6 months and only the children you have when applying will be covered. In other words don't get pregnant again or the subsequent children will not be covered and you will make it on your own. I on the other hand don't agree with all of the republican ways; Give to the rich and take from the middle class. I as a middle class individual feel that no matter who gets voted into office, I will get the shaft. Again, thanks for defending me.

Purple I do want to point out this. What I said about your posts is the straight up truth. Go back and read what I said, I didn't call you stupid or anything like that. I took what you said and if I did anything wrong it was a very slight misinterpretation of what you said about how you selected your candidate.
When you described Obama's religious views as psycho, you misrepresented him far worse than anything I said about you. I just wanted to point that out.
When you by the same statement misrepresented the Rev Wright, I kindly pointed you the way to see for yourself. Perhaps you would see the clips and claim he is still a nut, but you would be the first I know who felt that way after seeing them. The clips, however were designed and selected by devious men to make you feel that way and that was my point about the guys you were saying you wished to reward with the presidency.
Wondreingirl, who outright said totally untrue things about the candidates, just got her feelings hurt being treated to the same honesty from me, except I took her exact words and showed her to be wrong. Bearing false witness against others. For that she spewed her bile on me and the kindest of things she said since I showed her without a doubt to be lying was to call me immature at my advanced age. I can make sure I am right in what I say but I cannot be accountable for how people act when they are shown to be uttering untruths.
I just wanted to say that her statements were not really a defense of your posts. Rather they sought to elevate her position and anyone who opposes me by demonizing me. She is less inclined to address the details of what I said.
My theme on here has been in part to expose an entitlement psychosis that conservatives hold for themselves as a special right. Wonderingirl wants to be able to lie about the candidates and not be called out for it. Your statements about Obama's religion were in the same vein. If you two want to say unfounded things people correct you -- it is the most immediate and electric form of Karma -- and it is actually good for you to be corrected instead of us all giving you the entitlement to be incorrect.
My take from your dialog is that you are far above Wonderingirl in honesty. It shows in your dialog. As far as anything I might say to bunny and oldgramps, we have dialoged with one another, and although Gramps is a truly lovable individual, we can be frank with one another mano y mano. Happy has some mental problems and she and I are prone to take off the gloves with one another, he,he!

Wabbit, Did you notice the dates on your footage in the selected propaganda piece?
I'll notice it for you -- 2004? Two years of Republican majority left in both House and Senate after those hearings, I believe, correct me if I am wrong.
If someone says there is no crisis yet in Fannie and Freddie at the middle of the housing boom in 2004, and the crisis happened when loose money and bad practices made the boom fall through, 4 years later, then why don't you go back to Bill Clinton on why your guys were so stupid for so long. Go back to Jimmy Carter, or FDR, why don't you? Republicans since then have no ability to lead so they should never be expected to notice when something goes wrong, huh?
I am starting to understand that you are not simply a mistaken cheerleader for your ideology, but rather you are a dishonest person Wabbit. Or is that unkind and I should give you an entitlement to untruths, so I can't say that?
That established, gotta love those House Republicans for sticking with free enterprise and shooting down the bailout bill, huh?
Question is, McCain, the hero of the bailout bill, going to Washington to help the crisis work itself out, did he fix it so the Republican rank and file would vote against it? Or did he fix it so the Democrats would vote for it? Or did he just not do anything like it looks like?
The maverick can't lead. The president can't lead, nobody is in charge of Republicans -- they need to be "led" out of office.

It's like a sex offender, they can't be rehabilitated, he,he!! Kidding. Everybody is only a prisoner of their own will and false pride.
You guys ought to lighten up.
I don't see you and wondergirl as having much to contribute, except for the rest of us to make examples out of. Every time anyone shows you where your facts are just wrong, you can't even talk about it because -- you are just wrong.
What was your answer when I showed you how your trash site had mislead you about that poll? "I don't put much stock in polls anyway?"
Sure, that's easy to say after you pretended to be the expert and slandered the organizations who did the poll -- incorrectly and very lamely I might add. Just admit it and laugh at yourself!
You think you are entitled to misunderstand things in your favor, and repeat your misunderstandings as if they were true. It is a peculiarly conservative trait -- we all fall short but this is a special gift you guys give yourselves. When you are shown up then all of a sudden we all have equal opinions (another fib). Then if somebody doesn't accept that either, they have to be a demon.

OldGrandDad, I'm not angry at all. All my anger has been spent over the past eight years what with our country being led into the war in Iraq on a lie and thereby allowing the group who actually attacked our country to regroup, rebuild and expand into Iraq, seeing the people on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans treated like you know what "good job, Brownie", our economy and constitution trashed "I am the decider" and McCain going along.
Of course, they SAID it was the Democrats fault even though we had a republican president and even when the republicans controlled the house and senate.
Even after today's events, I'm feeling hopeful.

What a thread!
Grandad good to see you in good humor -- you're a likeable sort.
I must confess that this week has been quite a week in the USA.
You have the economy tanking (evidently true). For a while.
You have China saying "No more money" to US.
You have the GOP president seem to say "no more money" to the upcoming presidential candidates for their terms.
You have the maverick GOP candidate unable to influence his party to vote for a bill his own president -- and the Democratic leadership -- who insisted we approve -- not being able to convince the Republicans either.
You have most Republicans in the House deciding they all want to be mavericks, too.
You have the American people not wanting this bill either.
You have the GOP VP candidate under "house arrest", and every time she steps out the foot goes in the mouth. The big difference between her and the Dem's VP -- he doesn't seem to mind saying something stupid and he is NOT under house arrest.
You have McCain fans claiming to the faithful he won the debate but Obama's lead exists or climbs.
And I must confess, hearing people blame the Democrats for anything on this bailout bill is priceless! Imagine Republicans dissing on Democrats for not supporting a 700 billion dollar welfare bill. Imagine!!! Lions will be laying down with lambs! The end time must be near, he,he!

Okay Southern woman, I have tried so hard not to bash any certain religion because I do believe in freedom of religion. The muslim people (which obama is) scare me a bit. I don't believe in polls and I don't completely trust things on the internet or the news. I base my opinions on what feels right to me. The muslim majority is a crazy group of people. It just so happens that the culprits of 9/11 fall into that category. The comparison is just too great to take a chance in my opinion.
My son was on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq and I don't particularly want his life being ruled by obama. I was very angry with bush for pulling the troups out of Afghanistan and to Iraq for his own personal vengeance. But I would feel comfortable knowing that McCain atleast has been in a similar situation.
And as far as my voting record, I NEVER voted for Reagan. I voted for Clinton, Gore and would vote for either of the Clintons now. I don't change the way I think or feel just because someone has a party name behind their name.
And to everyone calling people liars today, just because someone disagrees doesn't make them a liar. If that were the case then the liar could be you.
I don't lie about anything, expecially not this topic. It and the candidates are not worth me lowering myself to do that. I actually don't think anyone is lying if they just state how they feel about something. Why would someone lie about that. I don't think anyone on the thread has lied today and think that they stated true facts as they see them. Election day will come and go and what ever happens, happens. I'll cast my vote for my choice and you for yours. It doesn't count as it should anyway. It's not the "people's" choice. The popular vote doesn't always win.

Okay Purp. Does it matter to you if what you say is just untrue?
Help me understand Purp. Please.
If Obama says he is not muslim, he goes to a Christian church, he professes to be a Christian, and has for years, there is no evidence he is a muslim -- then how can you truthfully say he is a Muslim?
If you have no evidence, no proof, the person himself denies your accusation, but you insist you know better than he does , is that a lie? Or a just valid difference of opinion?
Just a question serious and straight up. Don't get mad.

No it wouldn't be a lie if it's not true. If what you are saying is untrue would you be a liar? No you wouldn't be. Just misled maybe. I guess I just have a more tactful way of expressing things. I try very hard to not call anyone a liar. Even if his step-father didn't raise him muslim, he still follows some of their beliefs. When I was curious enough to listen to him I did hear an interview where he spoke of such.
And I did want to ask you a question about the entitlement subject.
Entitlement -- the trait of thinking that even if more than half the people don't agree with you, that your side deserves an equal hearing, equal control, etc. Nobody is worse at entitlement whining than conservatives -- they are so selfish they can't even understand the principle.
Isn't this concept along the lines of what minorities think? For Instance: Affirmative action. The way that you describe the principle it sounds like the basis for how minority programs are started. In your way of thinking, no one else is entitled to disagree with your opinion or feelings because you think you hold the majority opinion, but what about the minority voice? I thought you were a proponent of minorities. Well, maybe it's only if they are for obama. I am a democrat but I favor McCain so therefore that would make me a minority without entitlement to a voice according to your posts.

I don't want to hurt your feelings but coming from someone who has experienced acid before I can almost "rest my case". I am and have always been more educated than to do something like that.
And Southern woman, I have Irish ancestors too which also doesn't make me Irish American. So what part of Africa is obama from? I am full blooded American and have ALWAYS been proud of my country. Even through the bad times. I guess I feel that way because I am an American.
And yeahuhuh, does that make someone a liar because they tell people they are african-American when in reality they were born in America and are heinz 57 like the rest of us?

What makes snopes.com the honest website. Someone wrote that just as someone wrote the other. I'm not stupid, I can draw my own conclusions. I choose to believe what I believe because it has all followed a pattern that I had to put together just as you did for your opinion. And again I say, opinion. There is no way that either of us will ever know what the real truth is. It could go either way. Atleast I admit to that. If I'm wrong, oh well. But if you are wrong could you admit it?

Southernwoman, there may be more of them than us but personally, I don't care. If there is so many of them then they need to stop depending on us to support them and bail them out when they can't get things right. If it weren't for "them" maybe we could get our finances straight. I think it's time to call in the loans etc. and focus just on us for a while. Maybe that sounds selfish but so be it. Both parties are idiots when it comes to finance. The average everyday person could do better.
I have to say that when we were first in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq no matter how I tried to stop the feeling, all I wanted was the troops to be pulled out and the big one dropped. Turn the whole place into kitty litter. Some will probably think that is cruel for not thinking of the children and such but those children will be trained to destroy anything to do with America. If they don't like America then they should just stay where they are.
Okay, I'm tired and need to go to bed. I've allowed myself to get on a tyrade.
It's been a blast. Sleep well and feel safe knowing that men like my son are protecting you.

Purplehaze, I understand your dilemma. I do not have a party affiliation but had intended to vote for Hilary Clinton. I now find myself without a candidate that I can support wholeheartedly. The best that you can do is what you are doing---listen to the candidates themselves. I don't mean what they say about each other but what actually comes out of their own mouths of what they themselves state are their policies. Someone else's interpretation of "facts" is not enough to make them right and you wrong if you hear it for yourself. People draw their own conclusions that fit with their ideologue. Case in point: I am not a republican as earlier assumed on this forum. If Hilary was in this race, she would still be my choice, but I have to move on. I hope that by election day we will both be at peace with our choices.

southernwoman, you asked me a question earlier, sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. Here you go:
http://www.afa.net/08VG/index.html
And yeahwhatever, I don't know what you think went over my head. You see, I stopped reading most of your posts long ago, I sort of scan them because they are always full of the same words in different orders.

Posted by Yeahuhuh (anonymous) on September 29, 2008 at 10:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Purp, are you still convinced that Obama is a muslim?
I am afraid you misunderstand my entitlement statements. You look at things very differently than me. For instance everything to me is only valid in context. The idea that I could call Obama a Muslim but there is no evidence for it other than my memories which apparently -- based on evidence -- were wrong -- I would immediately adjust what I thought, without remorse that I had been wrong on something so important. I would feel it sinful and wrong to insist that my feelings about being right were more valid than the evidence.
As for entitlement, entitlement is viewed by conservatives as more bad than good, largely because of the political use of the word such as you cited as to minority programs. Actually "entitlement" only really means "entitled to priviledge, aid or special exemption"
Liberals are not so black or white, good or bad in how they view the concept. Liberals view entitlements as only legitimate if the circumstances are just -- they are neither good nor bad without context. So a poor, injured veteran would legitimately have entitlements. A rich, educated healthy person can pay their own way and need get no special slack.
But entitlements can also be for things and privileges that have no relation to government programs -- such as an entitlement to break the law, to lie, to steal or to mis-state.
For instance take my examples of entitlement to claim untrue facts in order to gain power from those claims. Someone who was honestly anti-entitlement, such a conservatives claim to be, should not be some one who considers themselves entitled to say incorrect things as excuse why they should prevail in an argument, an election, or a business deal. They should believe no one is entitled to do that.
Someone for whom winning were more important would be less bothered by the an untruth, have a looser definition for what is true, would allow themselves more liberties, even to the point of saying things that were not true, like Happybunny does, have it pointed out, then ignore what they did and do it again. Therefore the trait of claiming as I said an entitlement to violate the truth to advance their goals.
We liberals think that is immoral or at least we put a lot more stock in the truth for it's own sake. We are silly that way.
Conservatives once you understand my point, claim entitlements to claim God, justice, work ethic, freedom and goodness as their own, and often portray the other side as devoid of these values. That is a lie, and the priviledges to claim those things are a form of entitlement that is immoral to our side.
A lot of conservatives see nothing wrong with doing that, and argue endlessly over their right to be wrong but still use it to justify their actions. Does that make any sense?

oldhippie, you didn't make sense with that post. You admitted in an earlier post that you had experienced the effects of acid. What part of that post did you disagree with? That's why I hate getting involved with this stuff cause one minute someone can say something and then act like they didn't say it. If it was just a joke and you really didn't do acid. Sorry. But if you did then I will stick to what I said and say that I'm more educated than that. You made a reference to me getting educated. I already am. And as far as the type of person I am; well I know that I'm a good person, an educated person and an honest person that has no tolerance for drugs.

freedom, allow me to explain about your wondering what went over your head.
You stated about Granpaw's link -- that Obama's friends were willing to use legal action to ensure the lying in print stopped -- was another reason to defeat him.
The governor was claiming that lies should be protected as free speech in elections, even though you could be put in jail for lying about stealing a loaf of bread and Martha Stewart did hard time for lying to investigators. You claimed WOW like that was scary or outlandish and Obama should be defeated for such.
My point was that if someone were not a liar or did not publish lies to influence the election they would not stand to be in any trouble. Therefore anyone who would be particularly scared by that would have to be guilty. Your reaction seemed to assume a right to lie as the governor supported.
There, did that go over your head? Read the post about entitlement above then re-read this if it did.

Aw, I surely did hope to hear if purplehaze is still a witness for Obama's muslim faith.
I am truly amazed at the difficulties so many folks have at coming to conclusions of what is true and what is not. And especially what they do when they find out their initial impressions were wrong.
And at the very least I would love to see her sources for such an inflammatory claim against the man.
I'm trying to be kind here.

yeahuhuh, I do understand what you are saying about entitlement. But you are telling me that all people who don't vote your way are immoral and that is just not true. I don't say that all liberal minded people are devoid of the values you spoke of. But you are doing the same to the conservative minded people by saying that. Maybe it's true that some conservatives do as you say but so do the liberals.
"Conservatives once you understand my point, claim entitlements to claim God, justice, work ethic, freedom and goodness as their own, and often portray the other side as devoid of these values. That is a lie, and the priviledges to claim those things are a form of entitlement that is immoral to our side"
You seem to not see that everyone doesn't think the same. You seem to be stereotyping everyone that isn't voting for obama. You say it's because they think they have the right to claim entitlements to God, work ethic, etc. So who is entitled to claim those things? Obama supporters? I'm not a supporter of obama but I can claim God, work ethic etc. but I don't take that from you as a human being. You have that right just as I do. The constitution guarantees us the right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" or is that also considered entitlements for obama supporters?

quote from Sarah Palin during Katie Couric interview:
Katie Couric: Why isn't it better, Gov. Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
Gov. Sarah Palin: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, we're ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the -- it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.
I'll just go ahead and say it "she's a heartbeat away from the presidency".
And I didn't even know trade was a scary thing.

And yeahuhuh, Just because you think it is true does not make it that way. If you read my earlier post you would see that I said no one will ever know the truth. But it doesn't make me any less right just because you think it. I don't get my information from internet blogs or posts. It's simple to know that an obama supporter could have written all those things about him not being muslim. He was raised muslim and sympathizes with some of their beliefs. He said it himself in the early part of his campaign.
And as far as lies. Can you imagine the type of person that said those horrible things about Palin's 17 year old daughter and her Dad? That had to be one of your fellow obama supporters. How could someone attack a child that way with the problems that teenagers go through without that sort of crap.

That was my point exactly. yeahuhuh keeps trying to convince me that it's only the McCain supporters that are spreading lies. That is a lie in itself. I choose for whatever reason to cast my vote against obama. That doesn't put me in any stereotypical group. I am still a good person and have compassion and knowledge just like the next person. I don't feel that it's my place to try to change anyone's mind. It's just my preference. And it doesn't make me a liar as has been insinuated

Purplehaze, "That was my point exactly. yeahuhuh keeps trying to convince me that it's only the McCain supporters that are spreading lies. That is a lie in itself."
Now I'm being patient with you, but I am starting to realize that you cannot even recognize when you say something that is untrue, and you don't really care at all -- so I guess by your definition that is not a lie. Give yourself a pass.
I never said nobody on "my" side lies. I said people on the conservative side have a special form of retardation that comes from an entitlement they give themselves to say things that are MORE untrue, MORE often, in order to get their way. Like you are doing on this very simple point. Not only did you misstate Obama's religion, you misstate what I said and you did it to make you appear to be right.
That's okay. Some people like me are still willing to explain, and if people need more help to understand the ten commandments, there are churches that specialize in telling people why lying is bad.
I'll try it your way Purple -- how's this:
PURPLEHAZE IS A MUSLIM. And I am perfectly entitled to say that to others. Everybody has their own opinion and mine is that. I will not apologize to nobody.

old hippie, yeahuhuh, and whoever wants to berate me for my opinion; why do you feel that you have to convince people to see things only your way?
old, yes acid does do damage, lots of it. It doesn't even compare to the other things you mentioned. My education about drugs is from knowing people that have ventured that direction. Your knowledge is first hand. If you don't mind admitting that you did those things, why would you care if someone said something negative. It was a smartalec way on my part to let you know how stupid it was. The same as I would do to someone today doing meth. or crack. I've seen the damage it does and it's ignorant. If there's one thing I have willpower over, it's drugs.
And, I can assure you all that when obama first came out, he himself said that he was raised muslim. I do not lie, never will and just because you say it is a lie doesn't make it so. None of us will ever know every truth to a candidate. They all tell you what they think you want to hear.
And as far as me being a haji, yes you are correct, it is not true. So what.
Yeahuhuh, how are you being patient with me? In your long explanation of entitlement you all but said that only liberal thinking people are honest. You forget, I am a democrat, have been for years. You have not proven to me that obama isn't muslim. Showing websites that are written by obama supporters does not make it true. I personally, with my own two eyes and my own two ears, before the Wright incident, witnessed obama say in a television interview that he was raised muslim and sympathized with the religion. So how can you call me a liar. And I haven't put you down for your beliefs. You have that right and so do I. I have not been rude to you but you have to me. I am not less human because I disagree with you.

Why should I have to prove to you that Obama is NOT a muslim?
In your world are people guilty till proven innocent?
You are perfectly entitled to an opinion.
And I am perfectly entitled to chop your head off if you bear false witness against another person. I am perfectly entitled to make you look like a fool if I desire. I will take the lumps if there are any, you should do the same.
I was raised around people who were members of the KKK. I sympathize with them -- the poor fools. Does that make me one? No.
Does that give me a profound knowledge about them that many others do not have? Absolutely. Just like Obama has with both Muslims and Christians -- skills that can save people like your son from getting a bullet in the head.
You vote for who you want to. It's between you and the Lord what you feel is true. But when you slur people in public you have to pay the piper.
If your mistake is innocent then now you know.

I really didn't think Obama was a muslim until George Stephanopolous was interviewing him and he said," No, John McCain has never questioned my Muslim faith" and he never corrected himself. Stephanopolous corrected him. Now, I have family who are Muslim and I have no problem with that. But they are honest about their faith. I don't see myself or any other Christian I know accidentally saying my Muslim faith. As far as how the Lord wants one to vote, I cannot in good conscience vote for someone who will not stand up against the atrocities of partial birth abortions. That is an ugly thing and it took a while for me to make myself look at it. There is no question of when life begins. If you have to kill it, then obviously life had begun

I choose at this time not to make a direct ad hominem argument. However, 'Obama being raised as a Muslim' is a well known LIE. Is like saying anyone who went to school for a couple of years in Mississippi must be a Baptist because he/she was around them. Or anyone who spent a few years in Hong Kong must be a Buddhist.
Posted by Yeahuhuh (anonymous) on September 30, 2008 at 10:06 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Yes the incident referred to, when discussing the subject of other individuals falsely saying Obama had a Muslim faith, he stated McCain had not made statements about his muslim faith.
A video clip was taken out of context and published as an intentional slur to misinform the electorate.
It would be like someone explaining being accused falsely of bank robbery then saying, "no so-and-so did not speak publicly about my being a bank robber".
That is far from an admission or a Freudian slip.
The strength of the claim he is Muslim rests on a presumption of his guilt, then uses the clipped wording to verify that.

I am amazed at the lengths some people,( NO NAMES) will go to to excuse themselves for believing a LIE. Ie."He said he was raised Muslim". His FARTHER WAS Muslim, BUT if you have read his life story, you know that his Farther didn't stick around long. That is why he also says that he was raised by a "Single Parent",( his MOTHER), who was a "CHRISTIAN". All that tells me is one of his Parents was a Muslim and one a Christian and when he became an adult he made his own decision about FAITH AND CHOSE "CHRISTIANITY".
NOW, lets assume you haven't read his life history, lets look at it from a practical point of view. #1- Dick Cheney is Republican and Vice President of the united States, with heavy influence at the CIA and a financial intrest in the Republican Party Winning this Election,(he is still economically tied to "Halliburton"-[SP]. Given that FACT, who could doubt that if trere was ANY PROOF that Obama was a Muslim, Had EVER been associated with Muslim teachings in ANY WAY, shape form or fassion, that information would not have been "LEAKED" by now??? I mean they leaked the name of a "DEEP COVER CIA AGENT, because her husband wrote a book that they didn't like..

I didn't watch a clip of this interview. I watched the interview in it's entirety. And I didn't say that I belive he is a Muslim. I'm just not as sure of that as I once was. Obama's mother was an atheist, not a Christian, and he did have Muslim influence and some Muslim education as a child. He has said that himself. oldhippie, you need to put a John Prine CD in your car and sing along with it as you ride down to Rodney or somewhere and relax a little, or maybe a lot.
