Co-Lin adds Spanish with prison in mind
Published Saturday, August 8, 2009
NATCHEZ — Mucho gusto, mi vicino Adams County Correctional Facility, says Co-Lin Natchez.
Copiah-Lincoln Community College is offering a special interest Spanish class this fall, aimed partly at helping fill a need at the new Adams County Correctional Facility.
“There are a couple of reasons we are doing this,” Vice President Teresa Busby said. “One is because the prison might need us, they are definitely going to need some people who can interpret Spanish there.”
The prison, which opened in July, houses medium security illegal immigrants, many of which are Spanish speakers.
The second reason for the class, Busby said, is because the population of Spanish speaking people is rising in the area.
Beth Richard, special interest class coordinator, said the class will be taught on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and run for six weeks from Sept. 14 to Oct. 19.
The class costs $60 and will be limited to 20 people.
“Spanish-speaking people are the largest growing population in this country,” Richard said. “So knowing the language is very practical.”
The class is being taught by Angela Brooks. Richard said Brooks is from Natchez but teaches at Wilkinson County High School and is certified to teach Spanish.
Brooks said the class will focus on a conversational base of Spanish rather than focusing on the grammar.
“The class is for those interested in using it for travel,” she said.
“Or for having basic level conversations with Hispanic clientele, co-workers or those they encounter on the job”
To register, contact Beth Richard in the Co-Lin library or call 601-446-1103. Co-Lin is located at 11 College Drive off of Col. John Pitchford Parkway.

I'll say it again for those who missed it. If you come into the United States you should be able to speak ENGLISH! We don't need illegals from other countries coming here, using our health facilities, our social security, our schools, etc. and not even have enough consideration to learn to speak our language. Our government has become so afraid of hurting anyones and everyones feelings they don't even care what our own citizens want or think. Come here from another country, become a citizen and learn English or get out!

I guess all the other cultures should consider it a compliment that Co-Lin isn't offering 'their' language because of a prison.

Y'all know the old saying...
If you speak two languages, you're bilingual.
If you speak three languages, you're trilingual.
If you speak one language, you're American.

Why are several commenters so critical of a Spanish class? What's wrong with furthering one's education? We could all stand to learn a bit more about the world rather than being so closed minded.

Good idea, don,t be so close minded, soon we,ll push 6 or 8 to hear English on the phone.

The guards need to know basic words like , shank, kill,
anything that might be dangerous to the safety of one's own health. Since I am not leaving town, I don't think I need another language skill. Of course if you are a checker
in Wal mart it might be useful.

We would not have illegals coming here if they were not able to find work. Arrest the employers and the need for the prison and translators will go away.

No one is against a language class. In fact I may take it myself. We are only against being required to learn it because of the influx of illegals. I like the idea of teachers going to the prison to teach English, but then that would give the prisoners the advantage of knowing our language and theirs.

I posted nothing offensive at all and my comment was deleted. What gives? Time to quit posting, stop my paper and my advertising. How disappointing ND.

We are supposed to learn Spanish in 12 hours? Even just enough to get by? How splendidly absurd.??

At the rate the US is being torn down by the new congress and president, we may all need to learn Spanish. Mexico seems to be the last Christian stronghold left. The Muslim immigrants coming here are already pushing for their law to override American law. The rate babies are born tells whether a country can repopulate itself. Most of the European Union states are already well on the road to becoming muslim states. America is not far behind. I did not hear about Mexico, but they like having children and they are mainly Catholic. We may all have to move there to avoid being beheaded, so we need to learn the language.

You can see there are no Muslims in Mexico, so you may be on to something here. I understand it is very cheap to live there also.

Deleting comments is a perfect example of how idiotic this supposed "forum" is being operated. Dear management - if you want to have a public forum then do so. Place a disclaimer in a prominent place stating that the Natchez Democrat does not necessarily support or agree with the opinions expressed online. Then ALLOW people to use the forum and speak their minds. I can understand and appreciate the deletion of comments containing profanity or something equally offensive. But to delete comments based solely on what you find personally offensive or do not agree with defeats the whole purpose of having this forum. Not to mention the denial of free speech, which a newspaper OF ALL THINGS should defend at all costs. Deleting comments is bad enough, but to completely disable the commenting all together when a subject is controversial or heads off in a direction you don't like is hypocrisy of the highest order. Make up your mind - either let people post their opinions or do away with the commenting - period. By picking and choosing what is allowed and what gets deleted based only on the opinion of the current "comment police person" on duty monitoring the forum completely defeats its purpose. Only in Natchez would we have a newspaper so lame as to actually create a public forum and then CENSOR it. Grow some or shut it down.

we can put a man on the moon, but we can't stop one from getting over a fence. drop them off in the middle of Mexico, it would be cheeper and they might not want to climb the fence, if they make it back.
