Teen injured in combine incident
Published Sunday, August 9, 2009
WATERPROOF — A Waterproof teenager was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson after a farming accident Saturday afternoon.
Justin Hubbard, 18, suffered severe leg injuries to both of his legs after becoming trapped in the head of a combine at Davis Farms south of Waterproof at about 1 p.m. Saturday, Tensas Parish Sheriff Rickey Jones said.
“We’re not certain how exactly this happened,” Jones said. “We don’t know if he slipped or some loose clothes pulled him down into it, but both legs were trapped.”
Jones said Hubbard was working on the combine that was fitted with corn head when the accident occurred. A corn head is an attachment that aids in the harvesting of corn.
“He was there working with his grandfather,” Jones said. “They may have servicing the combine to start working. There were several people around.”
Northeast Louisiana Ambulance Service, the Tensas Parish Fire District first responders and the Tensas Sheriff’s Department responded to the 911 call.
When first responders arrived, Hubbard was conscious and alert, Jones said. The Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate Hubbard from the piece of equipment.
Hubbard was taken to Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday before being transported to Jackson by helicopter.
“It is possible that he will have to lose part of one leg, but they think they can save the other one,” Jones said. “It was very tragic, but could have been worse.”
Hubbard’s exact condition was unknown.

My prayers are with this young man and his family. From one who has been there, this is a time when they are going to need all the prayers and support they can get. My son was just 23 when an accident cost him his leg. I cannot express the absolute horror of seeing a healthy, active young man go through something like this. It just rips your heart out. I want to offer them this encouragement. It will get better. Just pray and let the Lord carry you through this time. Don't try to find someone to blame. Don't let this destroy your family but let it draw you closer together. Your son will come through this and so will you. My son is 40 years old today, is very active, works full time and is a wonderful husband and father to my two precious grandchilden. God bless you. Wish I could be there to encourage you in person.

Heavenly Father,
Giver of life and health, comfort and relieve your sick servants today.
Give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that they may be strengthened by your loving care.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

i want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers and calls. i also want to thank the ems crews that came out to our farm to get my son out of this bad situation. i want to tell each of you that when i walk in his room after he came from under anesthesia i asked him how he was? he immediately replies, i feel blessed. god spared my life. i can make it with out that leg. it took all i had to keep from just crying like a baby to know that my 18 year old son can see the big picture of life. as for an update, the doctors amputated a portion of his left leg. it is cut half way between his knee and ankle. our main concern now is that all the tissue, skin and muscle lives. that is what must take place before they have the ability to cap his amputation. he will then be fitted for a prosthetic. livejo please email me at upcominangler@aol.com

jdavisjr, I am very sorry for this accident. I am glad though that your son is not so distraught over what has happened to him. Yall just need to remember that everything happens for a reason and something good will come out of this, at least that's the way I believe. Good luck to Justin and your entire family. God is watching over all of you.
