Natchez police car involved in accident
Published Saturday, January 3, 2009
NATCHEZ — A Natchez Police Department vehicle was totaled Friday night when a car pulled out in front of the officer on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.
Police Chief Mike Mullins said officer Lee Mizell was in the outside lane traveling south to an activated alarm call when a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am facing north in the center turn lane turned left in front of the patrol unit.
“It was failure to yield,” Mullins said. “She turned left in front of him across traffic and struck the front right side of the car.”
The Grand Am drove into a ditch on the right hand side of the road, near Western Auto, Mullins said.
Driver Kendra Sylvester, 31, 3 Spring St., was taken by ambulance to Natchez Community Hospital. She was alert at the scene but complained of shoulder pain.
Her two passengers — husband Otis Isaac, 33, and her 10-year-old son — and Mizell were also transported to the hospital via ambulance complaining of pain. Mizell had back, arm and leg pain.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m.
“Witnesses claim the patrol car was traveling with traffic and the Grand Am turned in front of him,” Mullins said. “It appears he was going at a normal speed. He was not in emergency mode.”
Sylvester was issued two tickets, one for no proof of insurance and another for driving under suspension. Her license was suspended for unpaid traffic tickets, Mullins said.
Her car sustained heavy damage.
The police car was a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria. Mullins said the department would be able to handle the car shortage for a few months.
Normally, two officers are assigned to each vehicle, driving it in opposite shifts. If needed, a third officer could be added. But Mullins said he thought they would be able to maintain the standard schedule.
New vehicles were ordered in December and should arrive in March.
Mizell has been with the department for less than two years, Mullins said.

Should it have been the front 'left' side? I pray all is well.

She pulls out in front of him so she is clearly in the wrong here YET she and her whole family are going to complain of whiplash and sue the city.

gottabe, she can't do that. She was at fault and bears all responsibility.

The city will not be reimbursed for her bad actions, but need to send her to jail for several years to justify no payment. My family has been stung badly by people driving under suspension and having no insurance. When caught after doing injury to anyone else, they should lose their freedom for a long while. Some teeth are going to have to be put into the law to stop some of these law-breakers!!

Then WHY did she and everyone in her car, her own family, go to the hospital complaining of pains? I just find it odd. Sounds to me like she screamed whiplash and they all copied that!

dummy driver
suspended license and no insurance
she shouldn't have even been on the road
not to mention that she was at fault,
you always yield when trying to cross in front of traffic
as a matter of principle- the city should sue her for a new car and injuries to the officer and Mizell should sue also for his personal injuries
there are way too many of these drivers driving with suspended licenses and no insurance
the only thing to do is impound their cars and revoke their license indefinitely, or boot them until they have proof of insurance and valid license

that's right frogprincess
make em pay one way or another, maybe work free for the injured and the city
thing is their work would be pathetic

In her defense...ALL cops speed...i know this for facts...they think they can get away with everything...If i had to take a guess she was turning thinking she could make it and couldn't...guess why the cop could have been speeding going on that call...people read all the facts

I agree this woman was in the wrong, but we also have to remember police sometimes drive very wreckless. I have seen police speed through town when if a civilian was to go one mile over the speed limit they are stopped. They will also turn the flashing lights on to go through a red light.
Everyone don't get in a uproar because I am not defending this lady she shouldn't be driving without her license & insurance.

bull
picture and hitcock, pure bull
as many miles as the police put on the road, and as few accidents as they are really in, I say they are very careful...
plus witness states that the cop was moving with traffic, so obviously NOT speeding
and when police do speed, how do you know they are not responding to a call? and that's what their lights are for when they are responding to a call and need to get on thru a light.....
get real will ya..... go to municipal court one day and sit through the caseload- way too many suspended license cases, the court is packed with them, literally..........
PLUS YOU ALWAYS YIELD TO A POLICE CAR --- ALWAYS!!!!!! IDIOT!!!!

Yeah, I think she's in the wrong too, hitchcock. No doubt, re: what you said about police drivers, my daughter and I were almost hit once, had I not slammed on brakes, as one pulled out in front of me at a redlight. He had his lights on, but no siren....as he flew around a curve. Not the norm, I know, but some do take advantage of the power. When I see one fly by just because they can, I say "there goes old abovetha!"....you know, above the law...haha

This woman was SO in the wrong on so many levels but WT hell was she doing on OUR streets with OUR children and OUR families with NO license and NO insurance?
oh yeah, Obama will take care of her, what was I thinking???

any driver that has a suspended license oughta have their car booted until they get a valid license and proof of insurance........ that would put a stop to it,
only problem is I doubt if we, the City of Natchez, can afford to buy that many carboots...... it would take hundreds......
Posted by 3on23 (anonymous) on January 3, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)
If you see an officer speeding with lights but no sirens there are often calls that require them to come in that way, they are not just abusing the office.
I had an unisured driver who was driving under suspension run a stop sign in front of me causing me to wreck. My insurance company had to go after him but the bad thing was the office didn't issue him a ticket or arrest him. We do need tougher enforcement for those breaking the law.

Picture_music101....there is no defense for that woman even if the cop was speeding. She is a repeat offending law-breaker and should be treated as such. She does not deserve to be given any excuses.

My parents were coming right by the Dodge Dealership about this same time yesterday evening and they were headed toward walmart and a city cop and a sherriff in a Dodge charger were going REALLY REALLY fast through that RED LIGHT by the Dodge dealership ...Dunno if it was the same cop involved , but the woman shouldnt have took any chances pulling across the lane in front of anyone ! Wish everyone involved a speedy recovery !

If anyone is full of bull it's you. You are either a cop, extremely dumb or in denial because police DO speed & run red light & it's not when they are responding to a call. It's because they can do it & get by with it. They also park in handicapped spaces. Lazy bums!
Not once did I say this was the policemans fault only that they do break the law. From the article she was definately in the wrong.
Oh yea I know for a fact that when they travel they can turn the light on & speed.
Now before you call me an idiot you open your eyes and start being more observant to what is going on.

The NPD and ACSO need to do some road blocks on insurance and license. Have one set up weekly or daily. Lets get these slackers off the street. Yes we live in a free country, but their are guidlines and responsibilty as Americans we must obey.

Police cruiser or not, just plain old common sense dictates you shouldn't pull out onto on coming traffic! The issue with police speeding may very well be a valid one, but this story is only a microcosm of some of the VERY poor driving habits I see in this state. No signals, running red lights, no right of way and as in this case, total failures to yield to oncoming traffic are just some of the few.

ddsmith-In a free America roadbocks would be unconstitutional and would violate 4th amendment rights of great law abiding Americans including you.The bigger issue with roadblocks today is that the police here in the Miss-Lou and all over the country can and will take advantage of the homeland security laws that makes any area 100 miles within our national borders "constitution free zones" where you the American citizen has no rights on the roadways.
I'll post a link with more info... Just take a look for yourself and think about what WILL be next?

As far as this accident with the police officer and the lady I hope that everyone involved recovers quickly and everyone can remember accidents do happen. That is the reason the LAW requires you to have insurance, right?

" If I don't agree with you then what you say is crazy . " How closed minded . Expand you views of the world and it's different opinions . This is just a comment so don't take it personal .

I don't know about Mississippi Laws,,,,,But Louisiana Police have roadblocks all the time checking for invalid drivers license and NO insurance!
Frankly I think it should be done in every state so some of those idiots that think they won't ever get caught driving with no license or insurance can be stopped BEFORE they are involved in a wreck!
Over here in Louisiana,,,,,not having insurance will get your car impounded and it isn't returned to the owner until they can show proof of valid insurance!
Wishing you all a speedy recovery! It really bothered me that this woman didn't have any more care for her child than to be driving without insurance,,,,At least for his sake if not for her own or an innocent bystander!
Shame Shame!

I can't believe what I read sometimes on these posts. Government is already too big and has too much power to destroy it's own citizens . Folks running around openly professing support of big government . When the smoke clears and Democracy resembles a socialist state what then ? OMG it's time for me the get out of the U.S.A. now . Anyone remember the deputy who was in a wreck several months ago, driving with a suspended license? Way too many people can get by with it for awhile, but it catchs up to them sooner or later.

Don't be too quick to complain about road blocks for insurance. AZ has cameras to catch you running red lights, cameras to catch you speeding, road blocks for drunks, and can now give you a $120 ticket for the license plate frame if it doesn't meet the specifications of a new law.
Red light runners and drunks have killed many people, so I have no objection to ticketing the drunks and putting them in tent city for a year.I have no sympathy for the drunks serving time in tent city . The poor darlings can do without coffee and eat green balogna and sweat it out for a year or two.If one cannot afford insurance, he or she should not be driving. Muggle mentioned the innocent bystanders.Unfortunately, they are usually the ones to be killed or maimed by careless drivers.

Pride- you can't leave now it's already to late. Did you know that you need a passport to travel to Canada or Mexico?
The fences are going up everyday along our northern and southern borders and them fences don't stop only one side, they stop both sides from crossing.(to stop illegal immigration it takes incentive not fences or walls)
It's all getting so scary now when you take history into consideration.
Yes Freedom42 a lot of us remember the story you are talking about and that story confirms a lot of readers posts on this page.

I don't care if the cop was going the wrong way on a one way while driving in reverse and talking on a cell phone, this woman DID NOT have a license, and NO insurance. She had NO business driving. I'll bet you she'll be driving again in under a week. This is her fault, plain and simple, but the thing is nothing will be done to her. She isn't going to pay the old ticket and she isn't going to pay the two she got for this wreck.

Muggle, you are right-- Louisiana has roadblocks set up on a regular basis by local, parish, and state police, checking for DUI offenders, insurance, license and registration, child restraints and even seat belt violators. La. State Police issue press releases to media a day or so in advance stating that they will have "checkpoints" and then minutes before they start stopping cars, they actually issue a press release stating the exact location....and they still catch numerous violators of all of the above. I don't feel my rights are being infringed on because it is little more than an inconvenience of a few seconds --unless i am breaking the law.

I was rear ended at one of those check points outside St.Francisville some years back . One car caused three cars to receive damage and one person injured . The officer comes running with his pen/pad . I looked at him and thought , hell dude you caused it ! This officer had cars backed up several hundred yards . I thought a prisoner escaped from Angola . Come to find out they were only checking license/insurance registration . How asinine that a road block could be set up for something so trivial . People could have been killed that day . I'm sure that people and officers have been killed at those so-called check points . A stopped car looks like a moving vehicle to a drugged out driver .

I lived in Louisiana most of my life. I still work in a small town in Louisiana.Any checkpoint I've been thru had numerous police units with lots of lights..most of the time they are set up at/near an intersection that drivers should be stopping at anyway. The officers check for valid driver's license, proof of insurance, sometimes registration, inspection stickers, seatbelts, child restraints, DUI suspicion, etc.
So moan about people not having insurance, then call checkpoints to check for that as trivial??
These checkpoints are a minor inconvenience intended to make the roads safer for me and my children.
And afterall, if I have to pay for auto insurance that is required by law shouldn't everyone?
When I see one of these checkpoints, I just pull out my license and insurance card, roll down my window, hand it to the officer who -- smiles, sees that I have my seatbelt on, that my children are buckled, my grandchild in a child restraint seat, and hands my stuff back to me and tells me to have a nice day.I return the smile and say "Thank You."

The bottom line is -- if she had not been on the road driving illegally with no insurance and with a suspended driver's license, the accident would never have taken place.

i was in a wreck and i got charged for not maintaning control of my truck but it wasnt my fault at all but i got charged the other didn't. well if i got charged for some like that why can't the cop. he didn't control his car very well. so the charge should go both ways.

I haven't been thru a La.check point in years . You are probably correct but the one I was held up in didn't have lots of lights , only two patrol vehicles , and was probably 10 miles from the nearest town . And I totally disagree with luv2visitnatchez . Check points don't guarantee safety . Like I stated earlier I was rear ended by a drunk at that checkpoint .

You have to be kidding me. It's always the fault of someone else. Give me a break, Kendra Sylvester hit the cop car. How in the world can you possibly blame this on anyone else? If Sylvester was not on the road this would have never happened. She was driving illegally. If you don't have a license stay off the streets.

If you don,t have a vaiid driver,s license the insurance companys don,t have to pay. Your insurance is not valid if you drive without a license.

What about the thousands of wrecks and injuries, damages caused by unlicensed uninsured drivers, that never have to pay. I had one run into the back of me. He was driving without any insurance,so my uninsured motorists had to fix my vehicle. The ones who have drivers license and pay the high insurance premiums are the losers because of all the people running the roads illegally. They don,t take responsibility for anything and could care less what damage is done.

You have your good policemen and the ones that are so arrogrant they think they are actually above the law.
Some people you give them uniform and badge & they instantly become a Barney Fife.

Using "da" is ok when you are texting someone but not for writing a comment on a place where all of Natchez and other places will see.
Mr. Mizell wasn't in the wrong here. If it had been his fault his car would have been struck on a different place not the front right side. Also it's funny how Mr. Mizell was strapped down on a stretcher with no one knowing exactly his condition yet the other person in the wreck got up and rolled their neck around thinking no one saw them do that after they complained of neck pain and had a neck brace on. Karma sucks!

Really. I mean come on. I don't give a rats rear end if your black green or white. If that is your best attempt at the English language and you graduated from any school, I feel sorry for you. You don't have to be perfect (Lord knows I'm not) but you went on without any punctuation or capitalization for ever. I honestly have to read your posts three or four times just to begin to understand you. I can get past the "da's" but four lines with out any form of punctuation is a little troubling.

As far as this accident with the police officer and the lady I hope that everyone involved recovers quickly and everyone can remember accidents do happen. That is the reason the LAW requires you to have insurance, right?

Try reading the whole thing. This is talking about border control? I would feel safe driving down the road with my family knowing that they won't get hurt in a vehicle. Plus this can crack down on the dumb ass parents who don't put their kids in a car seat.
