Woman arrested for rolling back prices
Published Thursday, January 22, 2009
NATCHEZ — A Walmart employee was arrested on charges of embezzlement after allegedly selling more than $500 worth of merchandise for only $5 Thursday.
Erica Marie Jones, 20, 38 Windy Hill Road, Roxie, reportedly charged Tiffany Williams, 22, Apt. B, 426 Watts Ave., one one-hundredth of what she really owed.
Williams was charged $5.25 for seven pairs of jeans, a baby crib, a pair of scrubs, a picture frame, sweat suit, laundry detergent, a bra, four pairs of pants, diapers, pizza, coffee, four 12-packs of drinks, canned goods, air freshener, nachos, noodles, frozen goods, chips and a family pack of beef.
The actual total for the merchandise was $547.50.
Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said another employee was allegedly involved in the incident and has not yet been arrested.
Williams never left the store with her discounted merchandise.
“Store security called and we arrested them at the store,” Mulins said.
Both are being held at the city jail without bond.

Its been going on for years. They even do it at the customer service desk. Good luck with the investigation.

If everyone knew this was going on, why have you not called the corporate offices in Arkansas to tell them about it. I can understand not telling the manager of the local store. If this was blatant, he/she should have had an inkling of it. If you ever see something of this sort happening at a store, make an anonymous report to the local police chief or to the home base of the business. Whether you realize it or not, it does affect your bottom line.

well,
Now that store security and corporate affairs have heard about it, they will review tapes of every register from the last 3 months and they will hunt all the people that are doing it. They did it at the Jackson store a few years ago and busted a truckload of people.

I LOVE the headline of this article. Great sense of humor.
I wonder if this idiot cashier and her greedy friend thought they came up with this great idea on their own. People like this are too stupid to know that this type of collusion theft has been going on for years in retail business, and merchants have ways to detect it now -- especially the large amounts.

My experience with the Natchez Wallmart two weeks ago was I bought two different types of cables for connecting my television to a satelite receiver and was charged with three items. One of the two being charged twice. I did not notice until I got home. This may be how they make up the difference in the money lost during their roll backs.

it was happening in front of me one time I found a manger and told him he blew me off so I found store security he said they had been trying to catch them for along time and thanked me for my help. You know stuff like that happens all the time they just can't catch everybody but that is why the prices keep going up because they have to cover what people are stealing

I was behind someone one day and the cashier was not scanning the part of the item that had the bar code but with all the beeps from the other registers you couldn't tell she wasn't. She was just sliding them across and putting them into the bag. This was also a young cashier. I always look at the ring up on my items to make sure its correct.

Everytime I go into that store with my BLACK husband and I am WHITE they follow us around like we are stealing the store!! LOL I have even talked to the manager about them and he is NOT going to do anything about it PERIOD!! But look where the stealing is happening @... At the register and everywhere else in the store!! I get so sick of being stereotyped for OUR skin color!! I am a Nurse and I do NOT have to steal!! I advise u to watch your backs in Walmart cuz they are low down!!!

I agree with frogprincenessntz. Contact Bentonville and let them know what you're thinking. I communicate with them so much they probably feel like I'm one of the gang up there. If you don't think they listen, let me tell you that they do. I was in north Louisiana last year and had been to two different Wal Marts up there looking for an item that I couldn't find locally. While in Monroe, I was really ticked off at the shabby way that they ran the store and treated me as a customer. Had to go to Rayville because Monroe didn't have the item, and the Rayvill store bent over backwards helping me.
Sooo.... I felt like telling the good folks in Bentonville my experience. Guess what? The next day, Monroe called and wanted to know what they needed to do to improve my shopping experience and Rayville called to thank me for the glowing report they got.
So folks, corporate can't improve anything if you don't let them know. Oh yeah, when you call or email, it helps if you stay on point and don't go off on a tirade! Just a tip.

I can't tell ya'll how many times I've been double charged for items purchased at Natchez. You are so busy unloading your buggy that unless someone is with you ,there is no way you can keep an eye on the checker. Wal-Mart's checking system leaves something to be desired. Like honesty.

I agree stealing is wrong but, this type of action has been going on forever. Personally I would not tell Wal-mart or anybody if I saw some of this type of action. It is not my business. Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Belk, etc., got more money than I and probably any of us will ever have. They have not asked for a bail out like the BIG 3 so that within itself should tell you something. And this thing about raising prices they are going to do it anyway. My only regret is the cashier should have got her something for herself.
Posted by lambchop (anonymous) on January 23, 2009 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I had not planned to comment until I read the last entry by Bone. What do you mean it is not your business? It is and always has been in the interest of the consumer that we police everything. That is why the government and other entities get away with stuff because "people" don't complain or bring to the attention of others the things that are going on.
I try to watch as I am checked but I don't always see everything. It is the consumer's responsibility to keep tabs on his/her purchases. And, in defense of checkers, sometimes it is easy to make an honest mistake. Every error is not intentional.

I can't believe some of you are blaming Wal-Mart for this crime. That cashier agreed to work for Wal-mart as an honest employee and she stole from the hand that was feeding her and her family. She should stay in jail a long time along with her friend and maybe this will serve as an example that if you do the crime you do the time! Wal-Mart pays taxes just like any other business and doesnt deserve what Bone said about them and the other businesses in our community. Stealing is stealing no matter what and its wrong. Wal-mart does a lot for our community that people dont know about and they are like Paul Harvey says, "They are a good neighbor". They have a very community minded and dedicated Manager and lots of honest hard working employees and its a shame that they do have dishonest employees that make them all look bad but we can't let one bad apple spoil the whole basket. Thank you Wal-Mart for all you do for our commuinty, all the taxes you pay and employees you hire and I am so sorry that lots of people don't appreciate you because myself and a lot of others do.

You did a good thing Ladybuggs . The only problem is that most of these younger workers actually believe in that crazy saying " don't snitch " . She thought she was doing something honorable by ignoring you and not being viewed as a snitch . She's no better than the thieves that bagged the clothing . She's basically giving away store profits and her job .

She was just trying to reward her friend for not aborting; help a girl out so to speak, she just did it with someone elses things. Sometimes people don't know someone elses things from their own. How many pencils (or something else) have you taken home from your own job? How many tacos (food) have you given away from the restaurant where you work? Or beer from the bar where you work? How many rocks or sea shells have you taken from Mother Nature? What about jobs you've done for others, how many corners have you cut? Really, be honest.

I just wonder how they thought they could get by the door guard that checks the ticket for anything that isn't in a bag. Like the baby crib. And to hand her a ticket that must have one or two charges on it. I haven't ever seen the man and woman that watch for shoplifters. Maybe I am blind or something. I do know two people that work there and they are very honest. I think the race card is always being used too much lately. I remember a few years back, they had a lot of computers stolen through the back door. It was during the day after Thanksgiving sale. When the people went in for the sale, there weren't any computers and people were wanting to fight about it.

Size of the store has nothing to do with employee theft. It has everything to do with the morals of the employee. When DJ's chicken was in Fayette, it used twice as much chicken as their Natchez store, yet the Natchez store turned a good profit, while the Fayette store had a loss every month. Go Figure, HUH?

I cant believe some of the comments I have read on here. They are obsurd!!!! You people are blamming race, blamming the Store Manager, Management, and everyone else there for what some young, stupid cashiers have done! You people are retarted!! Your right YOU JUST CANT FIX STUPID!!!!!!!!!What if Walmart was not in this community? Where would the jobs go? What would happen here? Remember when IP closed? What happened then? All people want is something to gosip about. You complain about the things that happen in the store, but what does that have to do with the fact that someone was stealing? Absoutely nothing!!! Things like this happen all the time, so why put this particuliar story in the paper? Why this one? You complain about what happend in the store, and how your never going to shop there again, and odds are you walk right in there again the next day! Walmart does give back to YOUR community. People dont see the good that they do. Like the comment said before, I agree with them, Walmart has a very community dedicated Store Manager and is very dedicated to that store and making sure that us shoppers have a good experience when we shop there. Wake up people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Way to go Walmart!!!!! GOOD JOB!!!!!! I hope you get more results just like this one!!!!!!

Those girls should have applied for some credit cards or made a few loans to get what they wanted or needed, then went bankrupt, and now they wouldn't be in trouble for stealing a measley $500 worth. They must not have been thinking large enough. Example your hospital, and I bet that if you checked out your politicians you would find at least one of them has filed for bankruptcy.

Say it loud, not saying that walmart is the center of the universe, but some of those comments were pretty harsh!! Those are someones mothers, fathers...so on and so forth. The store as a whole is getting slammed for an individuals act. Its not something they did to the commnunity, its something SOMEONE did. Why not insult the person instead of the company. Not saying Walmart does not have faults, because they do. The only point I was trying to get across was blame the person for this act, not the company, cause in the long run, they are the reason that prices are being raised to compensate for what they lost.

Fox news should have reported the attitude shown by Bone. More common attitude than most will admit and the reason our country is in such terrible shape. Looking the other way at theft by anyone from anyone is just pure evil stupidity. He mentioned KMart and Belks. Does he actually think of them as rich people? Those companies are made up of stockholders. Many who are employees who have retired there, living day to day like the rest of us, maybe one of your neighbors. You would not be stealing from some rich cat, but the little old lady down the street.

I worked in electronics at Walmart in Galveston, years ago and each year they have a big party, bringing a lot college students in town........7 camcorders were purchased during the week and all brought back on Sunday before the kids left for home! And after only being there for a few weeks, the manager took me to his office and screamed at me for the electronics having such a shrinkage in profits, not to mention in the weeks to follow 4 cameras were stolen off the display ------and I made sure they had security on ever night---inside job I'm sure. One last thing--one of my co-workers took a $100.00 bill only to discover at closing----it
had a woman president on it.........oh by the way I met my husband at Walmart in the lounge and thats where we got married 8 months later---even our minister that married us worked in shipping and recieving---that was the best thing thats happened to me---he was a keeper!
