MDOT work benefits from drought

Published Sunday, July 5, 2009

NATCHEZ — Drought can be a good thing.

The lack of rain in the area has provided the Mississippi Department of Transportation with plenty of work days at the continuous flow intersection at John R. Junkin Drive and U.S. 61 South.

The newest addition at the intersection is traffic lights.

“They are the permanent poles,” MDOT Project Engineer Jim Eggleston said. “We’re moving toward getting everything lined up to where we’ll be able to use them.”

Currently the lights atop the poles are cloaked with plastic to avoid confusion.

Median work to create a new road on U.S 61 South is nearly complete.

“(U.S.) 61 is actually finished,” Eggleston said. “There are two more layers of asphalt to go on that, so we don’t do any of the last two layers until we complete the project.”

The focus now is on the road that curves off of John R. Junkin onto 61 South.

“We’ll still be working on that for some time to come,” he said.

Within the next month, MDOT workers will begin installing irrigation and start landscaping.

“After that we’ll probably go ahead and plant,” Eggleston said. “It’ll be similar to what’s at Liberty Road (bridge) but not as extravagant.”

But while construction can continue on in the absence of rain, landscaping depends on the weather.

“It may hinge on how hot and dry it’s supposed to be,” he said.

Changes in traffic pattern aren’t slated to occur in the near future, and Eggleston said the project should be complete by the end of the year.

I'm confused. I thought that this new intersection was to be a non-stopping, continuous flow intersection like was pictured in the Democrat months ago before the construction started. So what are all the new traffic lights for if this new intersection is supposed to be a non-stopping continuous flow intersection????

You are not the only one who is confused. There is no way to have an intersection where no one has to stop unless you have overpasses.

This is the site that was indicated to be a good example of the continuous flow - there are signals.

The only way this could be a continuous flow intersection would be if we all drove carnival bumper cars.

This will be without a doubt one of the worst ideas to come down the pike in ages around Natchez. When it rains half the drivers in Natchez go into a kind of madness,or cosmic dust failout phase. Call it what you will, but they drive like 2 watts with no regard for the other cars. This is going to be a real disaster. It might work fine in some towns, but not the heavy party town like Natchez. I hope i,m wrong and i hope so,but something doesn,t feel right about this whole newbee. I didn,t see anything wrong with the old one. Some folks that moved here from Virginia said their insurance rates went up considerably for no reason, when they asked their agent why,he said because you moved to Natchez. We have a very high accident rate and one of the highest frivilous lawsuit averages their is anywhere.

Here's how you use the new intersection:
Go when the light's green.
Stop when it's red.
Don't text while you drive.
