Good news kicks off start of July

Fireworks and boat rides filled a great long weekend, but now with the holiday behind us, it’s time to get on with July.

But first, let’s remember the other great things the first week in July brought to the Miss-Lou.

- A new director is at the helm of the Natchez Downtown Development Association, and he’s ready to work. Mease Banks — a Concordia Parish native — is making the rounds downtown trying to learn the ropes. But down the road he wants to focus on bringing folks to downtown on a daily basis.

- The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society wrapped up a month-long push to raise the needed funds for a new animal shelter. Though they didn’t reach their goal, the group still brought in more than $80,000. Fundraising efforts will continue.

- The St. Catherine Creek Wildlife Refuge has been busy this summer. Bird walks have offered locals and tourists a chance to explore a bit of local nature, and now the refuge is preparing to improve the existing walking trail. This area is a great — and likely underutilized — part of Adams County. Those who have not explored the refuge should.

- Local libraries are stepping up to the plate to make a difference in bad economic times. Libraries in Natchez and Concordia Parish have seen an increase in use, and both are providing needed, books, computers and classes to help those seeking jobs find what they need. We are fortunate to have active, growing libraries as a part of our community.

As the last of the fireworks come safely to rest tonight, we know the week to come will be a great one.
