Board OKs school lunch increase
Published Friday, July 10, 2009
VIDALIA — The Concordia Parish School Board approved Thursday an increase of 20 cents per meal for school lunches for the 2009-2010 school year.
The price adjustment is the first in approximately 15 years, and was done because of price increases to food and fuel, Superintendent Loretta Blankenstein said.
The increase will come to approximately $1 a week or $4 a month for students who consume one meal a day at a school lunch facility.
The board also voted to appoint William Givens as assistant principal at Monterey School.
The committee that decided to recommend Givens’ appointment was composed of personnel from the central school district office, as well as the principal and a teacher from Monterey School, Blankenstein said.
The assistant principal position came open after then-assistant Principal John Bostic was appointed to replace former Principal Neeva Sibley, who retired in January.
Likewise, the board voted to appoint Debra Harris the interim principal at Vidalia Lower Elementary and Phyllis Cage the interim principal at Ferriday Junior High School.
The Ferriday Junior High position came open because Principal James Davis transferred to Ferriday High School to serve as vice principal.
Vidalia Lower Elementary Principal Doris Polk’s position was open because she retired.
Harris is the principal coordinator over the Options program at Concordia Education Center. Cage is the assistant principal at Vidalia Upper Elementary School.
In other news:
4The board voted to continue reimbursement to bus drivers for repairs made to their busses.
The district has a repair schedule that determines how much the district pays for repairs, Blankenstein said.
4The board voted to approve a job description for a numeracy coach and interventionist.
The school district has applied for a grant to hire the numeracy coach and interventionist, and the district has to have a job description in place if the grant is approved, Blankenstein said.
4The board opened and took under advisement bids for roofing projects at Ferriday Upper Elementary and Vidalia High School.

Are these interims temporary or hopefull permanents or what? I know that Debra Harris was an interim assistant principal at Ferriday Lower at one time. And what the heck is a numeracy coach? Some federal money to throw at a friend, family member, or retired teacher again I guess.
