Slime thing invades town

NATCHEZ — Eleven-year-old Thomas Perry transformed into slime thing last Saturday at Historic Jefferson College.

“Eww, gross,” Perry, a Crosby resident, repeated several times as he used his hands to mix together slime during the Slime Science class taught by event coordinator Kay McNeil.

“We decided we needed to do something for the children that shows them they can have fun while learning,” McNeil said. “So we came up with the slime class.”

McNeil taught Perry to make several varieties of textured slime. Using cornstarch, water and food coloring he made oobleck which he compared to having the texture of gum. Perry also made glarch, funny putty, glob, mutant gel slime and bouncing slime putty.

“It looks weird, like a jellyfish,” Perry said about his mutant gel slime.

The class was part of the college’s program “Explore” which takes place one or two Saturdays each month. Six to 8-year-olds meet from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 9- to 12-year-olds meet from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The next class is Rocks and Minerals on Aug. 15. The cost is $10 and pre-registration is required.
