Worrying about signs a waste of time

Published Sunday, June 21, 2009

As a business owner in Natchez, I find it mildly amusing that the planning commission is spending so much time and media exposure reining in outlaw signs in Natchez.

On the corner of Wilson Drive and Martin Luther King (a main thoroughfare) is a house sitting burned for maybe 10 years.

This is evidently OK, but Bad Boys Buggies’ sign on U.S. 61 is 22 square feet too big. City leaders should be more concerned with Fred’s and Bad Boys’ employee salaries, sales taxes, inventory taxes, real estate taxes and the city services these companies pay for on an annual basis.

There is enough pressure on business as it is just to stay open and viable.

The bottom line is all cities should have rules and guidelines, but they should be tempered reflecting the economy, both regionally and locally.

It was a good letter. Short and to the point.

I was driving around yesterday and looking. You know, we don't have that many signs. Hwy 61 looks pretty good signage wise. We have more important things to worry about.

If we could start fining people for littering the streets, that would make things look better. $1000 fine sounds pretty good.

If we could bulldoze some of those dilapidated houses, the city would look better. There are a bunch of them. Get started.

Good letter. And to the other bloggers, think about it. Bulldozing takes money from the city treasure, penalty for signage adds to it.

Support Natchez Businesses/Be very Pro-Business! This subject editorial reminds me of YOUR current Federal Government meddling in Private Business, where they should stay out of it! Reminds me of the Mayor and B of A of Natchez!

Yes ... the falling in houses should be removed but I do not agree that business not following city laws/ordinances should be ignored. If private citizens have to follow the rules then so do businesses. I have heard many of you complain because other businesses have been allowed to circumvent the laws/ordinances. This is not difference. If you don't like the law/ordinance then change it - don't ignore it.

Hey Don't forget about the Main street church with a hole in the roof big enough to fit a Cessna airplane in it. Very nice article. Stupid sign crap. Give me a break.

ProNatchez there is a reason there aren't many signs on 61S!!

It's judgment call how big the signs should be allowed to be. And if you are going to allow people to violate the limits you will penalize the people who stick to the rules.

I don't know why it should be a problem penalizing people when they ignore the rules they know are there.

juju?? What reasons are there for not having many signs on 61s??

Maybe juju is thinking of 61 when you are headed south to woodville. There are no business' on that side of the road after the old Stine building. Coming into Natchez is considered 61 N and has lots of signs on that side. I think most of the people in Natchez consider 61 N to be both sides of the road north of the old scales, and 61S to be both lanes south of the scales. It can be confusing when giving directions.

61 south doen't need signs. That's what keeps it scenic. It speaks for itself.

Each sign situation should be judged accordingly. If the sign fits in with the surrounding environment - then there should be no problem with the size of it. There are so many other things to be concerned about in this town. Watch the cable for these Board of Aldermen and Supervisor meetings - it's like a junior high student council. If it weren't our city's leaders, it would be entertaining - but it's just plain scary. Don't get me wrong, I love this town - born and raised here - so I am pro-Natchez.

Get a group of so-called leaders of anything together and it is a snapshot of being on an elementary playground. Tattle-tales, hot dogs, bullies, peacemakers, screamers, chasers, bad sports, victims, and whiners. Sometimes it is amusing and sometimes maddening but most often it makes people with good ideas feel unmotivated to get involved because it does end up being a cluster.

Went by Bad Boy buggys today and saw how their assembly line work was done.Everyone there was busy, working all day everyday turning out buggies...Drove out by International Paper later..it,s closed. Ain,t much happening out there. But they have the correct size sign at IPCO. That is the mentality and brainpower our city and some of the old die hards focus on. Don,t matter that IP closed long as the sign is correct..what a bunch of loose screws running this place. Guess what, they will keep doing stupid things right along till the bitter end of this town. It,s their lot in life, total shutdown. They wouldn,t have it any other way.

I'm not saying there is a proble with Bad Boy Buggies sign. My problem is that everyone has to follow the ordinances. Some people thing the sign ordinance should be overlooked because it is not in line with what some business want to do. How about the noise ordinance? When your neighbor has a party..plays the music to loud...should that ordinance be ignored because it is not inline with what your neighbor wants to do?

If businessess/citizens do not like the ordinance then change it...you can't ignore ordinances just because you don't like them.
