Nissi, short for Nissan, looks up at her new owners Lil and Doc McCollum at their home Wednesday evening. The McCollums adopted the dachshund Tuesday from the Humane Society.

Adopted dachshund fits right into couple’s life

Published Thursday, June 25, 2009

NATCHEZ — Nissan only had to park herself on Doc and Lil McCollum’s sofa for a few hours to become part of the family.

It took a recent stint of dogsitting to make the couple, married for 33 years, realize they were ready for their first dog.

“He would throw the ball and Harry would run after it and bring it right back,” Lil said of her daughter’s dog. “And he said ‘If you can get a dog like that, like Harry, then we can get a dog.’”

So Tuesday evening, the McCollums brought home Nissan, a dachshund.

“Doc sells Nissans,” Lil said. “And a woman (at the dealership) said she’s compact and cute like a Nissan, so we named her Nissan.”

But like so many other pet owners, the McCollums have already given their pet a nickname.

Nissi sits on Lil McCollum’s lap.

“We just call her Nissi for short,” Doc said.

When it came time for the McCollums to find that first pet, Lil knew just were to look — the Natchez-Adams Humane Society.

Lil said she recently attended a NAHS fundraiser and supports the group in their effort to build new shelter.

“They really need a better place,” she said. “And I’m glad we got her out of there.”

Lil said she recently learned Nissi had been living in the shelter since March and was being treated for a skin disease.

“Now she has a home. And I think it’s going to work out,” Doc said smiling. “They keep telling me I’ll get attached to it.”

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society is in the midst of a month-long fundraising campaign to raise $350,000 needed to build a new animal shetler.

To donate, send checks to the NACHS Building Fund, P.O. Box 332, Natchez, MS, 39121.

Congrats to the family. This is a sweet story. You all are going to love and enjoy Nissi. I have a dachshund for a house pet (who is very spoiled). I really enjoy his company. Dachshunds are very sweet and playful little dogs.
Good luck and God Bless

So long grandchildren and hello Nissi...LOL.
There's nothing like a dog, Doc & Lil; they never have bad days and love you without any doubts.

Will someone please change the name of the Natchez Democrat to the "Anthropomorphism Times"! Then it would make sense for these "nothing's better then a dog" stories, to be front page news.

One more request! Will some of you wealthy, local, blue bloods, that love animals so much; Please put the money up for the Great Humane Societies new building. Its as if the only thing they have learned from dogs is how to BEG!

You know cb, having a dog or cat to come home to after a hard day would really make you feel better about life. It has been medically proven that having an animal to care for and love lowers your blood pressure and helps with symptoms of depression.

Posted by crackbaby (anonymous) on June 25, 2009 at 9:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks freedom42, I have two wonderful dogs and a cat. My big dog drives me nuts sometimes, I think he makes my blood pressure go up? My small dog has heart worms and it depresses me to see her struggle? My cat walks on my freshly washed truck which seems to cause both symptoms to appear.

I knew people that had great joy raising, training and caring for their fighting roosters. Thanks to a bunch of animal worshipers, their sport was outlawed. Bet that caused some depression! These laws were supported by people who knew nothing other then they disagreed with the sport. Has the passing of these laws bettered any one's quality of life that you know of? NOT HARDLY HUH? Heck, why watch a chicken get his neck broke on private property, when we can watch juvenile children get injured in public tax payer stadiums, to the sound of cheering crowds. Oops, there goes my blood pressure, ha ha. lol

The parents of these children need to be the ones you complain to, not taking it out on the ones who wish you had gotten your dog treated so she wouldn't be suffering. Why for instance would grown men and women willing get into a ring and have their heads bashed in by someone else? I have no clue, but they should not inflict their blood lusts on innocent children OR innocent animals. On that I think we can agree.

Hey freedom, I gave little bit her heart worm preventative as directed. Guess the La. flying blood suckers got around it some how?

If I can agree with you on your last comment? Surely you can agree with this comment. As long as we as a society allow our juvenile children by the millions to be pitted against each other in injury inevitable sports, at tax funded stadiums. Its constitutionally wrong to deny the same rights to a small group of people, on private property, who choose to involve chickens in injury inevitable sports. On that I think we can agree, also! lol

Crackbaby, sounds like you need to go seek anger management......I think you can agree with that.....Lol...

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on June 26, 2009 at 6:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I can agree that it is wrong to "pit" children or even adults against each other in any kind of sport, especially the kids. Adults have the choice I suppose. Animals, on the other hand, do not have the choice. They are forced to kill to survive, as they would in the wild. And for domesticated animals that is just wrong. You need to address the sports issue with someone else without attacking the Humane Society for what they do.

BTW cb, I'm leaving to go out of town for the weekend, so if you don't see me on here for a few days, it's not because I'm mad at you! LOL

All of you are wasting your time trying to say ANYTHING sensible to CRACKBABY!!! Read her name; apparantly SHE WAS ONE! Anyone who allows their dog to get heartworms because they are to damned ignorant to give them their medicine should be put in jail. That's right CRACKHEAD; in JAIL!!! You rant and rave about sports or something; NOBODY MAKES ANYONE PLAY SPORTS. You are just demented. Give it up. We love animals a lot more than we care about YOU. You are nothing but a mean, coldhearted, hateful, unhappy, angry human being; and I use humanbeing lightly.

Hey my friend allgood, I here ya, It seems that way some days, doesn't it. It's not anger. It's PASSION with me, when I see animals rights over riding peoples rights.

For my old friend that loves animals more then people, "LOVESNATCHEZ". Please refrain from telling others to NOT discuss topics with me. People like "freedom42", "allgood", and others have had wonderful debates with me, concerning animal rights. I would consider your post towards me, filled with name calling insults to be the comments lacking anything sensible. I for one, don't see why the Natchez Democrat allows you to spew such name calling and unfounded derogatory remarks toward its readers? I will continue to passionately debate animal rights without lowering myself to your insulting level. Always know, I love you a lot more than I love animals. lol

hi doc & lil it was good to see last weekend

First of all, CRACK, I didn't TELL anyone anything! Your anger is getting in the way of comprehending what I wrote; I said they are wasting their time. Big difference. Everything I write is sensible; especially when it comes to calling out a rambling blogger. The ND "allows" my comments to you, just as they "put up" with your insane antics about sports, etc. Why do you have to jump into these wonderful stories of God's precious gifts of animals with your nonsense? Write a damn story of your own about whatever it is you're talking about and see who really gives a damn.

Hey LUVS NATS, as long as people like yourself place animals ahead or equal to humans, I'll be here commenting. Trust me, if the readers will look at your comments on this page, they will know who failed reading comprehension. Children are Gods PRECIOUS GIFT! Kiss your dog for me!

NO ANGER, JUST PASSION! lol

Posted by LOVESNATCHEZ (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 9 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks "crack", I just kissed both of my dogs and thanked God for them.:)

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 12:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'll kiss all of them: kids, grandkids, dogs, horses, cats, and even the parakeet! Children are the most precious gift from God, animals are a close second with me. CB you need to find an organization where they can use that passion of yours to help children, rather than spending all your time ranting against those of us who care about the animals also. Remember He made them first.

24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Now if we are to follow God's commands and try to become Christ-like, we are compelled to care for the animals also.
Thanks for the dollar!

hey freedom, hope ya had a great weekend. I am able to exercise some of my passion due to my profession. I try to save pre natal drug exposed infants in the first few struggling days of their lives. And to think, some have the ignorance to call me a crack head? Over four Special Forces tours in Iraq only made me more passionate concerning children.

I have no problem with what the Bible says concerning animals. My Bible grants me dominion over animals. If we are to set laws against man in behalf of animals, due to scripture. It would only be fair to set laws against such actions as homosexuality, being the Bible declares such to be an abomination against man kind.

My problem is not in how you choose to treat your animals. My problem is in making your opinion the law.

Posted by freedom42 (anonymous) on June 30, 2009 at 9:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

There once were laws against homosexuals, but our society has slowly changed it's opinion - and that is a whole 'nuther subject. Anyway, I did have a good weekend, thanks for asking. My son went to Iraq several years ago, just married, not wanting to bring any kids into the world, and changed his mind before he came home from there, so I can see where you are coming from there. I used to do a lot with kids, but got so fed up with their parents, and then when I was a foster mom I saw both girls go right back into the homes they were abused in. It kind of changed my attitude of wanting to help kids since nothing I did seemed to make any difference, but I admire what you do. When I help a dog or cat to find a home, or take a horse out of a situation where they are being abused and starved, I can honestly feel the appreciation from that animal. I can't explain it any better than that.
I did some research on the kids in sports thing and couldn't find any group or organization to stop it. In fact most articles were on the benefits of kids in sports. Never having been a competitive person, when my kids wanted to play ball of some kind, I supported them and made sure they had all the right safety equipment, but I was just as happy when they didn't want to sign up the next year. Hang in there cb, I think we're starting to understand each other.

Hey freedom, glad to hear the weekend went well. I'm planning on the weekend coming for sure! It would probably surprise some that I have two dogs and a cat. My big dog and my cat were both strays. They see the vet regularly, I had the dog neutered and the cat spayed. Both are pictures of health and very loyal. My other dog is very tiny. 2 pounds! She is a high dollar pure breed. I had her spayed due to her size. Even with following strict preventative measures she has heart worms. Maybe the fact of her line breeding coupled with living the high dollar lake life allowed the mosquito's to infect her. She has been a joy since day one.

I have been called everything in the book in some of these comments, while being a caring pet owner. My problem has never been with the animals. The rights of tax paying citizens in the name of animal rights is the pill I find hard to swallow. It makes my skin crawl to think of the lives given for individual freedoms in this country, only to have some taken away with the swipe of a Legislatures pen. Some even in the name of CHICKENS? But heck, you and I know that's a whole 'nuther story. Have a great fourth weekend and tell your son crackbaby says GOD BLESS HIM!!!!! lol
