Man arrested for burning dog sentenced
Published Saturday, March 21, 2009
NATCHEZ — The man arrested for tying a dog to a tree and lighting it on fire was sentenced to serve six months in the county jail and pay a $1,000 fine.
The sentence was the maximum allowed by Mississippi law, since torturing animals is not a felony.
Justice Court Judge Charlie Vess also ordered Travis Bradford, 20, to pay restitution to the veterinarian’s office that tried to save the dog and ultimately put it to sleep.
And Vess recommended that Bradford, who was pursuing a career as a certified nursing assistant, get a full psychological examination.
Bradford pleaded guilty to charges that he had tied the dog to a tree in front a neighbor’s house, poured flammable liquid on the animal and set it on fire.
When the neighbor Hattie Smith heard the dog’s cries and screams Saturday, she came outside and told Bradford to extinguish the flames. He beat out the fire with his sweatshirt.
Bradford, who turned himself in Wednesday night, waived his right to a trial and to an attorney, Vess said.
Bradford gave the court a note he had written saying he was sorry for what he had caused.
“I told him, ‘Hitler burned people in World War II, but they were dead first,” Vess said. “It’s just unacceptable.”
Vess said he’s hopeful the case can become a test case for new state legislation making such crimes a felony. And Vess hopes the community will now help law enforcement monitor dog fighting and other cases of animal abuse.
Vess said he was considering letting Bradford work off his $1,000 fine by shoveling dog pens at the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society.

This sentence is not enough. This is such a cruel thing this guy did. Imagine this dog being set on fire while it was tied to a tree. He should get 5-10 years for this. Just makes you sick to your stomach.

If you drag him to the mall in the morning, I volunteer to douse him with gasoline and light him up. I won't even tie him to a tree. I would prefer to see him run around in circles. I will even furnish the gasoline.
Normally, I would say. "Drag Out Back, Shoot In Head." This one is screaming for some extra attention. I think he deserves it.

The laws need to be changed. Animal torture needs to be a felony. But I am greatful that this sick-o got the maximum allowed by law. Hopefully that will send a message.

"And Vess recommended that Bradford, who was pursuing a career as a certified nursing assistant, get a full psychological examination."
He doesn't need an examination. I can already tell you that he is beyond help.
Would you want this piece of #### taking care of you as a nurse's assistant? I would not. And I would not want him any where near a kennel full of animals. Does judge Vess think that shoveling some dog doo will rehabilitate him? Get real. Within a year or two, this deviant will do something that will make this look tame. Mark my words. It will be terrible.
It has already been shown that people that treat animals this way tend to treat humans the same way. When he gets out, he can not be trusted.

Torturing animals should be a felony in Mississippi. It is in almost every of ther state, why not in Mississippi?
This bastard shouldn't be allowed to get away with this. He will be able to live and love after his six months, and no one will be the wiser. Would you want to be his wife or child in the future? This guy makes me sick. I don't care how sorry he may have become since he committed this crime. He is just as sick as a rapist if you ask me. Post his picture and a burn his right to vote.

The girls rolling back prices at WalMart got nation-wide coverage. This should too. I know. It makes Natchez look bad, but if it looks bad from the inside, it probably looks bad from the outside too.

Thanks, excapee. That reminds me. So many folks were upset that Michael Vick lost his right to vote. Do they also think that this trash should still have a vote in every election?
If so, why?
If not, what is different?

He should be serving his time in the kennel with the dogs at the Humane Society instead of a jail cell.

I disagree. He can not be trusted around any animal or any person.

They can give him his very own kennel. Keep him away from the other animals.

No problem ProNatchez. I agree with you. This guy has commited a crime that's just as bad as burning a human being, and he should lose some personal rights because of it. Obviously there is a legal loophole for him, but this should be a felony. This is just horrible what this guy did, and I wouldn't want my daughter around him, and I don't give a crap what he votes for. I say he lost all his rights when he did this, and he should have to declare where he lives so others in his community are aware of his presence. Oh, and I hope he goes to Hell.

I have taken the time to train my own dog to the level that he won an Obedience title and a Companion Dog title from the AKC. I wrote the training manual for the Lawrenceville, GA Kennel Club about 15 years ago. I love dogs and this just riles me up. This guy is one sick individual and it is a shame that the laws in this state are so weak, that he will be out in what, 4 months on parole? It's just not fair.

Whatever they do .....Please do not let him near the animals at the Humane Society.....he deserves not to see the light of day for quite a while and I myself think the laws need to be changed as far as animal cruelty....the punishment needs to be harsher, that way he will remember why he is there....He will proly have this exam done and they will say he doesn't need to be left alone in jail, then what....There are way toooooo many animal cruelty cases happening in this area, someone needs to tighten up and enforce the laws, keep these idiots from even owning 1 pet much less having several of them......
Posted by ProNatchez (anonymous) on March 21, 2009 at 5:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)
comingatya, it's obvious that you do not care about the animals. You probably wanted Michael Vick to get out of jail to go vote for whomever dogfighters vote for. Yes it was yesterday''s news. I was sickened by it then too, but was working and could not comment on it. Today, I can speak my peace. You should move along. Just don't get caught abusing animals, or we will be talking about you next.

Words DO hurt -- but the real problem is the spirit they can reveal.
Terrible cruelties are perpetrated against animals every day by unthinking and unfeeling people in the name of business, or entertainment. Think of how many animals are shot and wasted by people out hunting who get bored and disregard their actions. How many armadillos are cruelly slaughtered just for the fun of it to some people?
This guy's case was just extreme and in our culture, 6 months in jail is an extreme punishment.
Give him a psych evaluation and make him do time and restitution. You can't tie him to a tree and set him on fire boys and girls -- that ain't civilized.

As I said before the law needs to be changed to a felony.
Contact your legislature and make it so.......Bradford was
sentenced under existing law. He is serving time the
maximum time (6 months) and ordered to pay the maximum
fine ($1000). Maybe the psychological examination will
confirm he should be locked up in a mental ward and not
let out after 6 months!! That would be up to the Chancery
Court and probably needs to be done. Finally paying your
fine by shoveling dog S#@t or tamping asphalt in pot holes
is much better than sitting around eating 3 meals a day on
the county. Giving Bradford more than the maximum
sentence allowed would have given him a right to appeal.
In this case no appeal, no reduction of sentence, case
closed; period.

I agree whatiff,
most murderers, sadists, sociopaths, from my limited study start out on animals......
we need to keep an eye on this guy
he probably wants to be a nurse so he can watch people suffer and die
I don't know, I hope he gets some help before any more harm is done
comingatya- you need help too dude
there's a lot of difference from killing animals for food, killing animals for socially acceptable sport which is usually for food - granted there are a few outlaws out there that kill game and don't eat them, but that is not the norm and you know it- and torturing PETS..
If this guy had done that to one of my dogs, I would be in jail instead of him, but he'd be six feet under......or at least I would have wanted revenge for sure, I'm sure my wife would have intervened and calmed me down, but I would have wanted instant gratification of revenge on this guy, what he did to that dog was hideous and I'm glad Judge Vess put the max punishment on him that he could
Thank You Judge Vess. And good job LEO for arresting this guy and bring to light and the eye of the public what kind of person he is.
He should be barred from giving medical care to humans until we know he is of sound mind.

hopefully while he's incarcerated for six months he'll get beat everyday by the fellow inmates
I'm sure they will have NO respect for what he's done

comingatya, we can both agree that this man needs serious psycological examination, and statistics prove that someone who commits such atrocities feels compelled to commit worse crimes.
concerning your comments about hunters. It is the nature of the crime and the manner it was carried out that shows Mr. Bradford is in need of some serious medical help. That being said, in other parts of the world, animals that we consider pets and taboo are often considered delicacies or are even prepared for consumption on a regular basis.
In some parts of the world cows are venerated and grasshoppers are dipped in chocolate.
So if you truly stand behind your comment, I believe you are in need of "a mental assessment."

Isn't this how Jeffrey Dahmer got started by torturing and killing animals? Six months isn't going to change this person. I hope we don't read next that he moved on to humans. The school should not allow him to come back now that he has a record or at least because of the nature of the crime.

I did notice you use a small "g" in your name. Fortunately I serve the one and only God with a big "G". There are no "special" places in hell for men. Also, God does know our hearts and thinking evil things (in this case hating) is just as bad as commiting them. I am so thankful that my God has the power to forgive, the only condition being the acceptance of His Son, Jesus Christ as my Savior and the repentance of the sins I commit. We should all be in prayer for this man and his family, we never know when we may need those same prayers ourselves.

Sigh. I have to wonder if any of you even realize that doing what some of you suggested would make you just like him? He surely needs a psycological evaluation, but I don't agree that he should be allowed around animals without lots of supervision and I can't imagine that happening at the local humane society. Did he say why he tied the dog to the tree and set it on fire? Was he seeking revenge against the owner of the dog or did he have a grudge against the dog itself? Had the dog bit him or growled at him in the past? I just can't believe it, really...how could someone do that to a human or a living animal?
Posted by trulyblessed (anonymous) on March 21, 2009 at 12:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)
He has already been sentenced. Hell, people kill and torture humans can walk around for months, sometimes years before being sentenced. I guess an animal's life is more value than a human being.

Don't worry, God knows and sees all. He knows who kills for food or just for pleasure of the kill. He knows all of our thoughts; when we are just joking or expressing our frustrations at things we find unbearable. May God have mercy on us all. At least in Natchez, we have clean water to drink unlike the Iraqi people who have been without clean water since our bombs were dropped on their water supply. How they can get up each morning, go on with their lives and send their kids to school is more than I can imagine. May God have mercy on us all.

Comparing a hunter shooting an animal causing a quick death and using the meat for food is in no way comparable to what this man did to a tied up dog. I applaud Judge Vess for giving him the maximum sentence and doing it quickly. People that do this to other humans take much longer to get to trial becuase the charges are felonies and defense attorneys continually press for more time so I don't think there is a comparision there. I certainly would not want this man around any animals or working in any type of health care facility. I also wouldn't want him around my children. I hope everyone in Natchez remembers this man's name so when he is released he can be watched in an attempt to prevent him from doing harm to anyone else.

I'm okay with him serving six months, but here's the part I have a problem with: he's serving six months in our correctional facility.
That means he is costing us thousands of dollars for his incarceration. Meals, paperwork, medical treatment, etc. It's a very expensive proposition to keep someone behind bars for an extended period of time. He deserves it, but we don't deserve to have to foot the bill.
Instead of a $1000 fine, he should have to pay back the costs of his incarceration. How's that for a deterrent?
Anyone second that opinion?

Comingatya--you're an idiot. There is a HUGE difference between killing for FOOD and killing for the heck of it. Granted there are a few people that kill for sport but if they're wise they'd give the meat to someone else. As for the mounting? What else are you going to do with the body? It keeps jobs coming especially in the south. And also--the guy didn't exactly kill the dog. He abused it. I'd imagine that anyone who has been caught on fire would rather have been shot in the arm or leg then have to go through the scorching heat and medical treatment. This guy got less than what he deserved. He deserves at least 2 years. And to iminms017--I agree. Criminals are getting better care than many Americans--three meals a day and healthcare. All free!! They did the crime now let them pay for it. Both with time and their OWN money instead of having to rely on the public. I swear--if I was a hobo I'd be a crook simply for that fact--food, shelter, and healthcare.

Even though he committed a crime he needs a psych evaluation and none of us have right to judge him. Maybe him going to jail will actually help him become a better man. They will actually pay for him to get the help he needs, and guess who They is you. All you people who pay taxes. Stop being so negative.
