Alleged purse snatcher arrested
Published Sunday, March 29, 2009
NATCHEZ — A Roxie man apparently needed a drink after he allegedly failed to get away with a woman’s purse, and that was where police found him Friday night.
George Thomas Garland Jr., 34, 35 Walker Lane, Roxie, was arrested on charges of petit larceny Friday night.
Garland allegedly ran through the back door of King’s Tavern on Jefferson Street and snatched a woman’s purse that was sitting on the counter before running out the door, Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said.
“An employee of King’s Tavern basically tackled him outside, and he dropped the purse and ran off,” Godbold said.
Garland didn’t go far though, and police later reportedly found him in a downtown bar, and he was positively identified as the suspect, Godbold said.
The victim was able to recover all of her belongings.
Garland was charged with petit larceny because no one was holding the purse at the time that he grabbed it.
The amount of money that was in the purse at the time of the incident is factored in on the charges, Godbold said.
Garland was detained on a $704 bond Saturday.

This guy has been in town a couple weeks now running up bar tabs and then running out on the tab. I called the cops on him a couple weeks ago and after ten or fifteen minutes they showed up. I told the cop I just saw him walking down franklin street and if he'd go look he'd find him. The cop told me he wouldn't go look for him until he filled out his report. Fifteen minutes later, he left, but obviously couldn't find him. I even told the cop what hotel the guy was staying at, but I never heard back from the cops.
After I told the cop what had happened. He asked, "Do you want to file a report?" He acted put out for having to deal with the situation. Obviously, it escalated after that, but maybe if they had dealt with the situation then and there, it wouldn't have come to this.

oh this poor proof reading is nothing new, I remember back in the 1960's when in bold print right in the middle of the editorial page, the type setter put in bold print that the proof reader likes to do certain things, and it came out in the paper it was hilarious, and I think they both got fired over that one

glad they got him
on an unpaid bar tab, I believe that is not a criminal offense, but a civil one, as the bar has offered credit......
like on a bad check if you agree to hold the check or agree to take partial payments, you cannot prosecute criminally for intent to defraud, etc.....
go figure
I would not allow unknowns to run a tab

For those of you who don't get the paper edition:
Go to Opinions on the right side of the online paper, click on more opinions, then todays letter to the editiors. It is important, but for some reason was buried.
Which of the employees tackled the snatcher?

The alleged purse snatcher was caught on tape, so he will be alleged only until he is prosecuted. The person running tabs and then defrauding an inn keeper is another person or at least was that night. He put up a bad credit card then ran out on the tab.He is known to have done this several times around town ,but no one has taken the time to prosecute. Maybe this time he'll get jail time and think twice about ripping folks off.You have to help the police by pressing charges, or their hands are tied to do anything.

For those who are so wrapped up in the word snatched instead of snatcher -- get over it. Typing is not an exact science and some of the typing in the various blogs proves that out. At least on these blogs the unknown word typed has a red line under it and can be right clicked on and a choice of correct words can be chosen. Back to snatched, which I did not even notice considering the text it was referring to -- and it s a proven fact that you can read correctly whether spelled so or not -- the word spell would not have corrected it because it is a true spelling of a word. Why get petty over a word and blow it out of proportion. Seems that is the gist of the conversations above.
I am glad the alleged person has been arrested. The employee should be recognized for heroism and fast action. He/she is lucky to not have been injured.
