Ghosts, ghouls, goblins take over downtown

Published Sunday, November 1, 2009

NATCHEZ — It’s not every day downtown Natchez sees goblins and ghosts, witches and wizards and pumpkins and princesses — and the occasional ladybug and dinosaur, but then again, Saturday evening wasn’t “every day.”

As Little Feet Trick or Treat kicked off at 5 p.m., parents and children wandered from storefront to storefront accepting candy and costume praises from local business owners they met along the way.

And for many who showed up for the evening of candy and excitement, the night would the first time trick or treating.

Jaxon Jones, 13 months, put on his black cape and black suit, combed back his red hair and took in the city as he experienced his first night of costumes and candy.

“He loves older kids and he’s been busy looking around,” Kristy Janell, Jones’ mother said.

Janell, a Natchez resident, said her son’s costume was a special order because Dracula has turned into a fitting character for him.

“He’s started this biting thing,” Janell said. “His dad works in Texas and didn’t think he would be able to make it home (to trick or treat), so he picked the costume.”

Dinosaur Blake Mann — who will be turning 2 on Nov. 10 — was also out on Saturday collecting candy.

Mann’s mother, Brandie Mann, said her son had been getting into the holiday spirit and practicing his lines for the night.

“He’s been saying ‘trick or candy’ all day,” Mann said. “On the way over here, he wanted suckers, and I’m real nervous about him wanting to heat all this candy because he’ll sure try to,” Mann said.

Advanced. You are not advanced. You are really left quite behind. This had nothing to do with anyone looking for a hand out. It had to do with good clean SAFE fun for the children. I am glad they had this. That way people would not make a mistake and take their kids to the house of someone like you. I'm sure you would have had just as much poison as you have here online with comments like that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't let every article the Democrat posts show you ignorance.

advanced is not to far off. Did you go to the thumbnaii pictures and have a look. The very first one turned me off. The baby was asleep. Should have been home in his/her crib. The candy is for that teen not the baby. and that is what's wrong. Some of those babies were just getting their first teeth and in no way should they be eating candy. If someone had come to my door like that they would have gotten a talkin' to. Teaching beggars at an early age aren't they. That's exactly what it looks like.

I think that this is nice, maybe next year they could charge 1 canned good per child to donate to the stew pot or another charity. Have them use the canned good as a ticket to enter into the blocked off section. That way we teach the children that giving is as important as recieving.

Do most people just come on here to be mean and hateful? Maybe the photo of the child sleeping was for the childs photo album. Their first halloween possibly? I do not think of it as "a handout". If so, people have been participating in this handout on this one night a year for longer than I can remember.

I live in Jonesville, but presently reside in Omaha, Nebraska so that my husband can get the medical care that he needs (Transplant). I check into here and the Town Talk a few times daily just to keep up with the news.

My children do trick or treat. They also go to church and they do canned food drives. They are fed well, do not steal, no drugs, nor do they just expect things to be handed to them. I see nothing wrong. They understand that when porch lights are off, that means the people are not participating.... their choice, just as the trick or treating is a choice. The ones with the lights on do CHOOSE to participate. It is fun, not a handout. We only go around one block, to the same people who have lived there for years. Some do homemade items, some pass out wrapped candy. After the one block, we go home to a bonfire and have a weenie and marshmallow roast. That is a tradition that has went back 18 years.

I just do not understand the way some people think or why they say the things that they do.

Amen Misty. I hope and pray that your husband does well with his transplant.

Some people must have forgotten to eat their prunes, and I can certainly see that a little cleansing is in order.

destiny, do you have children? i doubt it, or else you would not be saying that baby should be at home sleeping in its crib. first, the child is 2 years old, according to the caption. by that time, children are old enough to climb out of a crib and therefore sleeping in a toddler bed. second, the baby is asleep, whether in a crib, or out with its family. just because a family has a baby does not mean that good, wholehearted traditions should be put on hold until the child is able to multiply canned goods. did you think perhaps that the child simply fell asleep because of the excitement? did you think that the reason they were all out is to have fun since it isnt the kid's bedtime yet? did you think at all? of course not. It seems to me, that those who have no children think they know the most about parenting. You are in for a rude awakening.

to each of you haters...either you went trick or treating when you were little and are therefore a hypocrite for your words against it, or you never got to go trick or treating because your parents were neohippie idiots and you are harboring deep-set resentments. either way, halloween is the least form of begging anyone could do, and when done in fun and not excess, even if babies are dressed up but passed out from the excitement, it is something that everyone in the family, in any family, from young to old, can enjoy.

and about the payment in form of canned goods--i actually agree. i would have wholeheartedly paid a can (or a few--i'm not wealthy :) ) of goods to gain entrance into two halloween fairs me and my three year old went to halloween evening.
