Brown assured runoff; battle between Mayfield, Freeman

NATCHEZ — The race for Adams County sheriff is not over just yet.

Ray Brown, the top vote getter in Tuesday’s special election, will advance to a runoff Nov. 24.

Trailing Brown are Chuck Mayfield and Randy Freeman, who will learn of their runoff eligibility once absentee and affidavit ballots are counted by the end of the week.

Brown received 3,572 votes or 35.99 percent, according to unofficial results.

“I was very pleased with the results, and it was what I expected,” Brown said.

“(This morning), I’ll start getting ready for the run-off.”

Brown said he will continue to spread his campaign message of unity until voters head to the polls once more.

“The message I’d like to get out is let’s make a difference, let’s move this community forward,” Brown said. “That’s what I’ve been saying since I started.”

Mayfield, the second top vote getter with 2,336 votes or 23.54 percent, said he will continue to run on his diverse background and experience in law enforcement.

“I just feel like I have the best qualifications of everybody running and the people of the county see that,” Mayfield said.

“This has been a close race, it’s been a very clean race, and I’m very proud of everybody who has run,” Mayfield added. “I do want to thank all my supporters who voted, and let them know we need their help.”

Freeman, the third top vote getter with 2,242 votes or 22.59 percent, said the absentee ballots will be the deciding factor.

“It’s been a fantastic race and I really enjoyed it. I wish all (the candidates) the best,” Freeman said.

“I know everybody can’t win, but I hope whoever wins takes care of Adams County and runs it the way it should be run.”

Cliff Cox, who came in fourth with 1,189 votes or 11.98 percent, said Tuesday’s election was democracy at its best, and thanked voters for their support.

“I wish everyone good luck that’s in the race,” Cox said. “And we’ll just have to see what the future holds on anything else political.”

As for the remaining candidates, Roosevelt Owens Jr. finished fifth with 268 votes or 2.70 percent.

Craig Godbold finished sixth with 191 votes or 1.92 percent, and Greg Wisner finished seventh with 101 votes or 1.02 percent.

Danny Barber, who withdrew from the race last month, but whose name remained on the ballot, received 22 votes or 0.22 percent.

If Freeman had bothered to go to the forums, he might've made the runoff. It made a difference with me.

Who voted for Barber...really that was a waste of a vote. It will be Brown and Mayfield. The Cox, Freeman, Wisner, Godbold voter will pull for Mayfield. This will be a very close race in the end.

Freeman will not be able to make up the difference with absentee votes. All us LOL (that's Little Old Ladies, not laughing out loud) vote absentee, and we LOVE Chuck!

Results show that money is not enough.
Cox spent $ 130,000 for 1189 votes - $109.00 per vote.

I actually think the amount of money hurt him (and the feeling of nepotism as his Dad is County Attorney).

Glad Chuck is in second - hope that holds up.

Good race - interesting result.

Couchtater,

EVERYONE was expecting Ray Brown to be in the runoff. The only question was, who would he be in it WITH.

Like Ntz said, if it's Mayfield, then all the Cox, Freeman, Godbold, and Wisner supporters will vote for him and it will be a very close race.

There was never a question that Ray Brown would be in.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So mayfield may possibly be in the run-off because he got all of the "hispanic" vote or what? Maybe, just maybe - mayfield may be in the run-off because he got the... majority of... the ah... caucasian vote? Moron!

No matter what happens, Randy Freeman is the best person for the job, in my opinion, hands down. He is more qualified than all the other candidates. Even if he does not get into the runoff or even get elected, he should run again when the next election comes up.

My candidate didn't win, But I pulled for you Cliff. Now run off. I know at the Democratic candidate speech forum around a month ago, I know Randy Freeman wasn't there, but I was impressed by Chuck Mayfield the best after Cliff Cox. A few days later, I seen Randy Freeman in a local hardware store and I talked to him. He impressed me, even though he was pressed for time.
I get a feel from these two guys about a sense of GOD present in there lives through there campaign fliers. Mr Brown, not from his campaign flier or from his website does he mention about GOD. I checked. So, no mater who is chosen to run against Ray Brown, Mayfield or Freeman, will be my candidate.

GOD Bless all

JESUS CHRIST is coming soon

Well, Adams County has spoken on their choice of recreation. Sheriff is still up in the air. Just glad to see that the citizens didn't elect the money or arrogance. The Citizens of Adams County want a working Sheriff. Adams County will is headed in the right direction now. Good luck to the final 2 candidates for Sheriff, and may the best win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to all who voted....you expressed your interest in a safe law abiding Adams County....To those who did not vote you get a second chance to exercise you rights....go out and vote in the run-off. The next few weeks we should all look at issues both candidates have for community safety. Also, how they plan to attack the growing drug problem. Its' a war we will never win, but we can put a big dent in it .... Finally who will work well with other law enforcement agencies, the courts, and other branches of government. Remember its 3 million of your tax dollars each year....whoever is Sheriff should spend it wisely!!

Its disgusting how half the people don't vote , then they start complaining about who's elected. Makes me sick. Congratulations, Ray! Know that you have friends from afar pulling for you.

thetinman: Mr Brown, not from his campaign flier or from his website does he mention about GOD. MY COMMENT: Ray Brown embodies all and more that God expects in his followers. Ray is kind, considerate, responsible, empathetic, and will always offer a helping hand to his neighbor. ACTIONS speak louder than the WRITTEN WORD on a political poster.

Countryboy14u: Here we go again lets vote the blacks into office. MY COMMENT: As sheriff, Ray Brown will represent ALL RACES no matter who voted for him. If Natchez voters are smart enough to elect Ray as sheriff, they will be lucky to get someone who sees PEOPLE and not their skin color, unlike some of the voters.

I don't live in Natchez, so I couldn't vote for Sheriff, but I've been trying to keep up with it. Seems like everyone did a really good job getting their views out there. Good luck to whoever wins!

To the naysayers - How do you expect the problems we have in our community (Natchez and Vidalia) to get any better with poor attitudes? I hope the new recreation park does very well, and you should too because the revenue it will bring it will benefit you.

And what's with all this end of time crap? Come on people, let's not be morbid. It's an election.

THE BEST MAN WILL WIN.

To all Adams County constituents:

Grab up a neighbor or someone who does not have a ride and take them to the polls with you.

THE RUN-OFF IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT....
GET OUT THERE AND VOTE AND BRING A FRIEND.
THIS WAY MAYBE YOUR MAN WILL WIN.

Randy is almot out, lets pray we get him out, either of the other two men will make a good Sheriff. I dont think he can pull it off anyway. FREEMAN is a joke lets keep him walking.

Posted by mrmojorisin (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 8:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It is a shame we can't have a two-tiered Sheriff's office because either one of these guys will be a good sheriff.

If I was Ray Brown and won the election, the first thing I'd do is hire Chuck, and make him my second....and vice-versa....If I was Chuck Mayfield and won, the first thing I'd do is give Ray a raise and make him my second. Between the two of them Adams County will be better run than it ever has before. We will finally have two totally color-blind, fair-minded, honest people working for us.

More than anything else, Natchez needs to pull our community together, and start including everyone. We need to drop the facade of community and start living it---right here is a good place to make a beginning.

mrmojorisin that is the best comment I have read, and its so true. We would have a great Sheriff dept. with those two in office. Keep freeman out.

Randy Freeman for Sherriff...I don't see Ray Brown or Mayfield participating with the SPECIAL OLYMPICS like Randy Freeman did. He actually ran with the kids during the Special Olympic Torch Run and I thank him for that too. I look at things like that on how I vote for people. Randy Freeman is a very respected man. How do we know that Brown or Mayfield is going to continue what the Adams County Sherriff Department did for those kids. Those kids are my life. Randy Freeman showed the proof to me.

Posted by whysoserious (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It is sad but true, the whites are going to vote white and blacks vote black. All the candidates are good at their job , with exception of Godbold ( he can barely do his job at the police dept. The police officers laugh at him because he is a joke.) I hope whomever wins makes Adams County the best in the state.

Posted by AverageJoe (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Looks to me like the voters of this county may have gotten it right and selected the 2 best men if chucks lead holds. I had a hard time making my mind between Brown and Mayfield. I do think Ronny Brown was a much better sherrif than previous administration but i also think we are about to see the best sherrif we've had in decades either way the runoff goes. Unless Freeman pulls ahead.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

whysoserious- I disagree with your derogatory comments about Craig Godbold, he's a good man.....I've personally worked with him and know full well he is competent and dignified.

but yes it is sad that so many folks will vote according to race and NOT according to qualifications

off the remaining candidates it's obvious that Mayfield is the most qualified, has had the best and most experience and education for the position of Sheriff

I have heard good things about Brown, that he is a good man to work with and work for--- but being constable and head of public school security (what with the problems in the school system) how does that compare with Mayfield's experience of Metro Narcotics, Sheriff dept, police academy, academic studies, etc.......I want a man that is going to be TOUGH on crime, I don't hear anything about Brown being tough on crime. All I hear is what a sweet guy he is, well as Sheriff you can't please everybody......

The Sheriff's position is administrative as well as a projection of attitude about law enforcement and fairness out into the county to serve and protect us all- Mayfield is the best man at this point.

Ray Brown doesn't stand a chance in a one on one race.

Posted by AverageJoe (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As for the recreation I hope we didn't bite off more debt than we can chew.

Posted by 2008 (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

whysoserious: Thankfully your first sentence in your comment is not true. There are many that see past color and vote for whom they believe to be the best person for the position Black or White, Yellow or Brown doesn’t matter. What is true is that as long as no one speaks up when the prejudiced, discriminatory and bigoted comments are posted things will never change. I firmly believe that it is a disservice to the readers when comments are removed, (unless they are abusive, threatening, libel so forth). The comments should stay up, so the readers can see what a cesspool these citizens that live among us have for a mind.

I agree with mrmojorisin comment, both candidates are equally as qualified and working together would certainly combine their expertise and greatly benefit the community.

Randy cares about people and tough. My family has known Randy most of our lives and knows what kind of a person he is. Randy actually got out and ran with the kids (SPECIAL OLYMPICS). These kids didn't ask to be born this way. Randy showed these kids alot of attention. I didn't see anyone else doing it and he wasn't running for election either. And as for Craig G. he is far from a friendly person. I have known Mayfield a long time and he is a super nice person. I want someone thats gonna be TOUGH, FRIENDLY, thats a people person.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 10:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Brown says "let's move the community forward" what's that supposed to mean?....

Sheriff is about locking up criminals......catching the crooks, having deputies out on patrol in the county to deter and catch criminals, thieves, vandalism, etc......setting a budget and sticking to it, being prepared for emergency and rescue......

NOT to push some social agenda or promise more jobs....that's just foolishness .....and it's also very vague.....Sheriff is NOT a political position, it should be focused solely on serve and protect, NOT making a social change in the community.

What I hear from Mayfield is about fighting crime and doing the job....that's what he should be focused on, so I'll vote Mayfield in the run-off

At least it sounds like whichever candidate wins, the people of Natchez will have a good sheriff.

It's gotta suck for Cliff Cox. Spent all that money and got nothing. Apparently, money doesn't buy everything.

HOW MUCH IS GONNA COST FOR CLIFF TO GET RID OF ALL THOSE BILLBOARDS AND SIGNS?

Posted by whysoserious (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 10:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Krogers- It's called free speech, I'm entitled to my opinion, just as you are entitled to yours. I've known Craig for at least 20 years and he has been made fun since the day he started on the police force. Just ask any patrolman, who is ROBOCOP, and won't be surprised with the answer they give you. Mr. Godbold is just a little bit overzealous when it comes to being an officer.

2008- I don't know what world you live in but it is TRUE. I'm not being racist I'm just stating the facts. All you have to do is ride around Adams County and look at the elections signs in the neighborhoods and you can see it's all about color. You were right some people see past color but a majority of them don't. I also agree with you on the comments being removed. The Democrat is not allowing people their right to freedom of speech. You would figure the media would the first to stand behind this, but not the Democrat. The Democrat needs to look at themselves before they start censoring the public view.

We at "COX HILL" no kin to Cliff Cox.Every year we have a big event around Holloween to benefit someone who is in need. We've been doing this for 11 years. Not to mention all the ball tournaments as well as dinners we've headed up for over thirty years.I want people of Natchez to know how dedicated Randy Freeman is to helping people. He is the one you don't have to pick the phone up and call for help.If he hears or knows about it he will call you up and say what can i do to help. And if you don't call, you look up and their he is with his wife ready to do whatever. There is so many things that i can tell you about this man who has more compasion in his heart than you will ever know unless you truly know this man.I remember several years ago we were doing the FALL FESTIVAL for Mrs.Loraine Seifarth who was battling terminal Colin Cancer this sweet lady was so very sick and wondering how she was going to pay her bills. At the time she was still trying to get on dissability.Randy wanted to do something for her,but didn't want the family to know it was him,so he came to me wanting to pay her water bill each month. He gave enough of money for each month for a whole year untill she passed away. How many people would have done this for someone you don't even know.Or the family who just lost their son to cancer and said what can i do to help this family without them knowing, and gives the money to me to figure out how to get it to them without them knowing,he didn't want the the light to shine on him for helping this family in there tradgedy. This is what this man does. Randy deserves this chance to be our Sheriff. He cares about this Town and all the people in it.Good Luck my Friend !!! Cathy Cox Warren from" COX HILL"no kin to Cliff Cox who has never set foot on" COX HILL"

I notice here that any time someone has a different view from a liberal , all kind of hate comes out trying to embarrass people to vote their way. Name calling, racist, stupid red necks, not looking at skin color, are all some of the terms used. The residents of any city look at a candidate and make their decision on what they have seen and learned all their lives, and that is why people vote the way they do. No amount of bullying is going to change that.

Why does all this have to be about a black- white thing......Adams County please do not make this out to be about race like all other things in this town and county!!!

Vote for the best man for the job.
CHUCK MAYFIELD

youneverknow- I never said I dislike Craig. Outside of work he is a good person, but once he puts the badge on he transforms. I think he needs to tone it down a little. I've never been ticketed by him or arrested. He needs to learn once the badge is on that he represents the city and relax a little. Everyone is not a criminal.

If the vote totals that the ND reported are accurate, the runoff should be an easy win for Mayfield. As voting has been along racial lines, which is normal for Adams County, it can be expected that the only votes Brown will add to his total for the runoff will be the 268 votes that Owens received. The votes cast for the other candidates will most likely go to Mayfield, resulting in a convincing victory. This is fine with me because i voted for Chuck anyway.

I wonder if D. New wants his $120,000 back?

whysoserious--Free Speech is one thing, but to consider it "free speech" to say people call someone a joke, or that they laugh at them, I think that's pushing it a littel bit, huh?

Suppose you are reading this comment and someone tells us about how you, your wife, one of your kids are made fun of or ridiculed, maybe calls you a joke---how would you like it? How would it make you feel? Freedom of Speech doesn't give you the right to belittle someone publicly. You may have some valuable things to say, but when you make fun of someone in such an immature way, well, it makes it less likely anyone will consider anything you say to have value. And you make a public ass out of yourself.

krogers--"moving our community forward" is something law enforcement CAN do. By fair and just distribution of the law that includes everyone, law enforcement can help bring our community together, bring us out of the darkness of bigotry and racism into the light of the 21st Century.

rushinghjr--- Do you know Mr Brown? Because if all you can say is "anyone but Brown" and relate him to your already well known racist feelings against our President? Well, it just goes to further my opinion that you, like Rush Limbaugh, are an embarrassment to your own conservative party's view of the future; racism and bigotry are out these days, at least on the surface and in public as the Republicans are in that, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" mood with Michael Steele, taking the helm of the RNC. Certainly his victory was propelled by Barack Obama's election, although the GOP's rife racist bloc is sick of all this change and equality, yearning for the days of Jim Crow and racially divided water fountains, huh,? ....and who is their most fervent spokesman? David Duke, ex-Grand Dragon and staunch Republican.

rushinghjr, I just know that when you get to heaven, just for you, God will appear black, and there will be no "White Only" entrance.......

mrmojorisin- "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me". Freedom of speech is my right to say whatever I want within reason. It does give me the right to express my views however I want to. That is exactly what freedom of speech is all about. People have made fun of me, I don't bet mad because it's their right. I think you need to learn this is a big boy world and you need to put your big boy pants on and learn to deal with someone saying things that you don't like. They have a sale on "life" at Wal-Mart and sir I think you need to get one. This here is a fine example of FREEDOM of SPEECH !!

Rushing, you really need to read a book called "The Shack". It's about one man's search for God. Very good, will make you think about things - maybe.

You know the more I think about it, I think both the Republicans and the Democrats need to sit down and shut up. It is time to announce a third party. I will call it the Common Sense. If I were in charge of the new party, I could solve the "Middle East Problem" in one year. The key is to keep ONE word out of the equation....(Religion)..........Here is how it would work. The U.S. will pay to move you and your family to any location of your choice in America. Doesn't matter if you have one family member or three hundred. We will also pay to relocate your businesses. After the one year period, you are on your own. Look at the money we wouldn't be spending on Military Hardware. Look at all the neighbors who would be thrilled. (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Egypt). Hell, they would have no one to kill, so they will start killing each other. Makes sense to me. If i'm a Isreali citizen and was told , "Do you want to live here or Florida.", It's a no brainer. It's a win-win situation for America. We get educated people with money and a kick-as air force. What you say let's get this thing started and tell the DEMS and the REPS to sit down and shut up.

Well all this bickering on here is so funny to read between grown people. Randy Freeman may be a good person, but he is the biggest joke as far as being the Shefiff is concerned. Chuck and Ray both are well qualified in every way. If Randy got in there (which he wont) he would have to have a #2 to run it for him while he kept being just a good ole boy. Randy does not have the smarts to run the office. I will be so glad once the votes are complete and Randy is out so all this bulls__t talk can stop. Sounds like most everyone except Freemans supporters agree on Ray and Chuck. Good luck to the both of you good men.

D. New was a campaign contributor in this race......he did not run. And I'm sure he would give his GRANDSON IN LAW that money three times over if he felt like it. He is my GRANDFATHER and a man who started out as a ROUGHNECK and worked his way to be the man he is today. I'm sure you could ask Chuck or Randy and they would tell you that he did what anybody in his shoes would do......support his family in any way he felt that he could. He is eighty two years old and contributes to not only his family but also many of the schools and charities in this community. He has also helped many children through college who otherwise might not could have afforded it. The reason you don't know about these things is because he doesn't feel it necessary to brag about it. So please everyone drop the comments about my grandfather. He would give anyone the shirt off his back if they asked and to pick on a man for supporting and believing in his family SHAME ON YOU!!!!! By the way, this is Lisa Jester. I'm not hiding behind my name.....but it sure is easy for you all to talk behind an anonymous name. Chuck, Randy, and Ray- I wish you all the best.

i believe that you can vote in the runoff--it is only when there is a primary runoff that you can not vote if you did not vote in the first primary. not 100% sure but i think that is the way it is. everybody needs to stop talking about the ones that are out of the race now, there is no need to keep bashing them.

So someone thinks God is a black woman now. Geez would you guys make up your minds.Religion is so confusing. You know if everybody that is religious actually arrives in heaven, its going to be a mess. You got 2.1 billion Christians, 1.5 billion Islams, 900 million Hindus, not to mention the Sihks, Kurds and I almost forgot, the Scientology crowd. Where is everybody going to sit. I can hear it now. "Hell no, I'm not sitting by those guys" or "Mommy, that turbine head called me a home skillet." I'm sure some of you guys will say "Well that beats the hell out of the alternative."Who went to hell and came back and turned in a report on the conditions down there."It's all a mute point anyway, Hell is going to freeze over because the New Orleans Saints are going to win the Super Bowl.

tmurdock I did not know God was a Democrat. Of course you living in "The Windy City" that explains everything. Did I read you right that God is placing his or hers pieces right where he or she wants. I can't imagine a clear thinking person would think that God was a political person. It must have been a big let down to all the religious Independents and religious Republicans when they found out that God was backing the current administration.

I hear you DeanWormer - some days it is hard to tell from our actions that Christians are commanded to love our neighbors (it doesn't mention any exemptions) as ourselves. If we can't do that, we could at least refrain from calling our neighbors idiots and trash, don't you agree? Actually, I think the Bible says that anyone who calls someone an idiot is in danger of hell's fire.

Posted by southernwoman (anonymous) on November 5, 2009 at 2:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

DeanWormer, I forgot to mention that, as a citizen and as a Christian, I believe strongly in strict separation of church and state - we have too many powermongers on the left and right in both areas.

WSS--you're right...freedom of speech, I guess holds its rights, just like burning the flag...there are young men today dying of foreign soil for your right to be a jerk...but it you ever decide to ridicule my wife or kids, and Godbold is someone's husband and kid, or if you ever decide to burn a flag in my presence, prepare yourself for a little of my unalienable right to seek happiness, because nothing would make me happier than to introduce my fist to your face...over and over again.

rushing---you are a riot...Jesus was a liberal. He taught peace, loving your neighbor...remember, the poor, the meek, the mourners, the peacemakers, the pure of heart, the merciful, the hungry, and the persecuted? Jesus hung with the poor people, the sick and disabled people, the lepers...he was about shaking things up, making a change...........the Romans and the Sanhedrin were the conservatives, they bullied, lied, and accused to maintain their power..........YES, there will be a gate in Heaven for liberals..it will be the big shiny one out front.

But don't worry, after a few hundred years in purgatory, they may even let you bring your brother, Bush in with you. :-0

WSS---do you feel threatened? Are you planning of ridiculing me or my family, or burning a flag? Have you ever heard of a metaphor?

But let me apologize anyway....I am sorry if I took offense to your abusing your freedom of speech by using the same anonymity at Mr Godbold 's expense.

And all our posturing and name calling IS wrong....you're not burning any flag and I'm not going to the hospital, WSS, I get carried away sometimes. These forums are for exchanging ideas and giving opinions on the topics they accompany. I'm sorry, I forgot that for a while. Truly, I am sorry, but if it made you think about what it must feel like to have your wife or your children read in the newspaper about how, you, their husband and father is thought of on his job, or to think what they must feel like reading something like that...how much it must have hurt their feelings... well, the beating would be worth it.

...."with exception of Godbold, he can barely do his job at the police dept. The police officers laugh at him because he is a joke."..........

That remark is in writing, in the city newspaper for anyone to read. If nothing else, please join me in trying to think a bit before we write something we may regret.
