Commissioner of Miss. prisons trying to trim $8.3M

Published Wednesday, November 4, 2009

JACKSON (AP) — Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps says he's looking for ways to cut $8.3 million out of the $344 million budget for the prison system.

Epps tells The Clarion-Ledger that there are several options to save money, including taking some inmates out of county and regional jails. He does not yet know how many, but he hopes to save about $3.2 million that way.

The state pays $20 a day to house an inmate in a county jail and $30 a day in a regional jail.

Epps says he hopes to save $1.5 million by renegotiating medical contracts.

Mississippi's revenue fell 7.5 percent below estimates for the first four months of the fiscal year that began July 1. That's a shortfall of about $111.7 million for all parts of state government.

i would think that outdoor tent camps would suffice to house criminals, less airconditioning and heating would definitely cut costs. In addition, have the prisoners produce something that would allow income to offset expenses. At last to end the costs and budget woes, tax the individuals five closest relatives. Use prison labor to do construction outside the jails. Ask Mr. Randy Maxwell of Concordia parish prisons for ideas, he seems to not have the budget woes as does this article illustrate.

Awwww. You mean we are trying to incarcerate people faster than we make money to pay for it???? We can't build more prisons and put Billy Bob to work running them?

We can either take the Third Reich approach (as in Nazi Germany) that the previous poster suggested, or we might reconsider some of our laws and sentencing options.

After all, it is just on the say-so of legislators in Jackson that laws are made so we can send people to jail, and almost everybody disrespects legislators as idiots according to the polls. Except, however when it comes to putting someone in jail. Then, some people act like government cannot do any wrong.

AA and/or NA meetings would likely be more effective than prison in changing the behavior of the majority of inmates.

Wow. It look like the Democrats are continuing to find newer and more interesting reasons to throw folks into prisons.

Jail time for no insurance...

You certainly don't still believe what the Republicans say do you OGD?

If you listen to Republicans, Democrats are soft on crime, not prosecuting people and they also are throwing people into jail.

Democrats might scare you with some of the things they suggest in forging policy. Republicans scare you with the nuts they would put in charge of everything.

Yeahuhuh, by education and experience I believe very little of what any politician of any party tells me.

:)

Concerning --> "Republicans scare you with the nuts they would put in charge of everything"

Yeah, we need more folks like Van Jones that realize 9/11 was an inside act.

:)
