Final count expected by day's end

Published Thursday, November 5, 2009

NATCHEZ — Nine precinct boxes remain to be counted by election commissioners.

Eleven boxes have already been counted, and Chuck Mayfield was leading Randy Freeman by more than 100 votes.

Election Commissioner Larry Gardner said he hopes to be done by the end of the day.

Gardner said the 139-vote spread between Mayfield and Freeman, which was reported at the end of Wednesday’s counting, is continuously fluctuating, but not by much.

The number of absentee ballots and affidavits to be counted is enough that if all of them were to go to Freeman, he would gain the lead over Mayfield, but Gardner said that is highly unlikely.

The absentee ballots usually run with the way the district voted, Gardner said.

“Now we’re getting into (Ray Brown’s) district.”

“We’re not doing a continuous tally. We’re just canvassing. We don’t want to get into that kind of contest thing. We just want to get the numbers together for the official count.

“These are just assumptions and unofficial results,” Gardner said. “But the fat lady is starting to tune up, though. We’re pretty close.

“We’re looking forward to the end. We have to get ready for the next election.”

The runoff will be Nov. 24.

If Mr. Mayfield has won, then that is the best news I have heard today. Good luck Mr. Mayfield !

Best news in a very long time. Now I don know who to vote for. I voted for Ray first round, because I knew that vote would count. Both of these men are very good men and will make adams county a very good sheriff. I hope and feel sure that either one who gets in there will get rid of mr. freeman

droopy - just out of curiosity, what has Randy Freeman done to you? What makes you think that Ray Brown or Chuck Mayfield would get rid of him?

My goodness. Randy Freeman is a good man that would have made a great sheriff. I think from what I have heard Ray Brown is a good man as is Chuck Mayfield. If I would have had three votes instead of one, it would have been for each one of them. BUT, since I only had one vote, I did vote for Randy Freeman because I believed him to be the best person for the job. I wasn't the only one thinking that way. If the three of them all would work together, just think what they could do for Adams County. I say good luck to all of the candidates and they all ran a good race. The only mud slinging I heard was on these blogs by people other than the candidates.
