Mayfield to face Brown in runoff

Published Thursday, November 5, 2009

NATCHEZ — Official election results are in, and Chuck Mayfield and Ray Brown will be on the Nov. 24 runoff ballot.

While Ray Brown’s runoff position was secured Tuesday night, Mayfield and Randy Freeman waited two days to find out their official standings in the election.

“(Mayfield defeated Freeman) by exactly 100 votes,” Election Commissioner Larry Gardner said.

Certified results showed Brown with 3,776 votes or 35.48 percent of the vote.

Brown, the highest vote-getter, said he’s thankful for the support he received and will be looking for more supporters within the next three weeks.

“It’s great to know that people are participating and getting out and voting,” Brown said. “It shows how much they appreciate you and have faith in you.

“My plans for the next three weeks are to get out there and keep campaigning and get ready for the election,” Brown said.

Mayfield received 2,492 votes, or 23.41 percent of the vote.

“My campaign workers did a great job,” Mayfield said.

“It’s been a very good campaign for everyone. The Freeman campaign ran hard. I can’t say enough good about them,” Mayfield said. “Overall it was just a pleasant experience for me.”

But for Mayfield, the experience isn’t over, yet.

With the election falling two days before Thanksgiving, Mayfield said absentee ballots will be a key factor in the election.

“We’ve got to get busy right away getting the word out about absentee ballots,” Mayfield said.

“We’re going to hit the ground running, and start building bridges with our former opponents,” Mayfield said. “We’ve just had such great support so far. I just want to continue doing what we’re doing.”

Freeman received 2,392 votes or 22.47 percent of the vote.

Freeman said it’s a bittersweet feeling to not be involved in the runoff.

“It’s a big relief that it’s over for me, and I can get back to my life,” Freeman said.

“(Not making it into the runoff) was a big burden, because I felt like I let the guys down at the department,” Freeman said. “I was trying to keep everybody’s jobs for them, and I know I’m not in a position to do that for them now.”

Freeman said even though he wouldn’t be the next sheriff to select deputies for his office, he had confidence that both candidates will make wise decisions in keeping the best personnel.

“I think we’ve got two fantastic guys that are running, and I wish them the best of luck,” Freeman said.

Gardner said not only was the election a success in terms of voter turnout, but also in terms of how candidates represented themselves during and after their campaigns.

“The candidates were, in my opinion, running a good, clean race,” Gardner said. “I’m pleased that no one appears to be upset with the results of the election.

“Now we can move ahead and start preparing for the runoff election.”

Tuesday’s voter turnout was 49.9 percent.

Just over 3 percent of voters voted absentee or by affidavit.

All registered voters, even those who did not vote Tuesday, can vote in the runoff.

Why bring color into it? It makes no sense. Vote for the man, vote for the human being, vote for the character of that person, vote for the person who is best qualified. It's those kind of senseless comments that hold Natchez back.

As an independent observer of the recent county election for Sheriff, the people of Adams County should be proud of the outstanding turnout of voters and clearly a truly superb group of sheriff candidates. The voters spoke and now there is a runoff. Having followed this election from early August, it is clear the two candidates in the runoff are excellent choices and are fully qualified for the position. Now each voter must decide who is the best qualified to be your Sheriff by deciding who is a proven leader that has the most experience in training, law enforcement, management skills, ability to deal not only with internal elements within the county, but external agencies such as other county sheriffs in Mississippi and Louisiana. Who understands Adams county and all of its inhabitants? Who has the skills to speak with and work with representatives and law enforcement officials from the Mississippi and Lousiana Bureaus of Investigation, the State Troopers, DEA, INS, the FBI, and Homeland security? Who would you trust to be on guard for you and your loved ones? Who has the training and knowledge to implement programs to reduce and possibly prevent violent crimes and drug trafficking? You cannot think Adams County is isolated from the crime and heinous acts afflicting other parts of our country. It only takes one unspeakable act to put the eyes of the nation on Adams County. Who would you want in the Sheriffs position of authority to deal with all situations of criminal threat? Look at the records of the two remaining candidates, compare their experience, training and positions of authority they held. To all citizens of Adams County, I tell you it is crystal clear that Charles Ray "Chuck" Mayfield is the "best qualified" man to be your next Sheriff!!

how would we make history electing Ray Brown? Don't vote for a man just because he will be the first black sheriff. (yes we can) I think Obama used that phrase and look where we are now.

Warbird look where we were and where we were headed. President Obama should be given much credit for even attempting to try to fix what Bush left him. YES he has done more in 10 months than Bush TRIED in 8 years!! Yes CHANGE is hard but when you look at it things are getting better,be obstimistic. You are right, don't vote for him to be the first black sheriff. Vote for him because he is the best qualified, experienced, compassionate, honest, loving, humble, ect. man for the job who happens to be black! Ray will be a sheriff for ALL citizens of Adams county. GO Ray!!!!

Big_Red16, how is Ray Brown more qualified or experienced than a man who has 25 years experience with the Sheriff's Department? Mayfield is the most honest, compassionate, and humble man I know, plus he has years of experience. I believe Chuck is the best man for the job and would be a great asset to this county.

Big_Red16 I agree President Obama should be given much credit for even attempting to try to fix what Bush left him.Bush was the worst president in history what a mess he made................. Everyone blames Obama about the lay offs ............lol my husband work was cut to 4 days a week in November of last year Bush was in there then and may I say doing nothing...........

ChickadeeNest, Ray worked for the sheriff office at least 16 years before moving into his present job with the school district. He has been re-elected as constable for at least 3 terms if not more. He is a proven elected official. His name and credentials alone are well respected and he has given tirelessly to this community not seeking reconition for any of it.I know his heart is in the right place.I won't be negative about Chuck, but Ray is the man we should elect. That is the bottom line. You should get to know him, if you aren't affraid you might change your mind.Lets be clear, VOTE RAY BROWN on November 24,2009. You'll be glad you did!! GO RAY all the WAY!!

I personally dont know ray brown but what I DO KNOW is that he is less qualified with experience than chuck mayfield. thats how i wanna vote-for the one who has experience. put the two side by side and its kinda a no brainer

It doesn't matter which one of these men wins, we will be lucky to have either one. They are both qualified, have both worked in the sheriff's office and are both good men. Who cares what color they are? Grow up people and vote for someone for the right reasons. It's been a long time since there's been any political race with such equality in candidates. I've seen many more people express confidence in both men than I've ever seen in the past. That's a great thing. That means we can't go wrong either way it goes. Godd luck to both candidates!

I hope the winner will keep Randy. He has been a good deputy and his idea of starting the junior deputy program
is a good one. He is serving as Constable now, and should he decide to run for Sheriff in the summer of 2011 then he will have a tough decision; he can only run for one office.
Ray Brown on the other hand if successful in the race for Sheriff in 2 weeks will have to resign as Constable. The supervisors would then have to appoint someone until the next election....now that would be political!!!

justmyopinion - the problem is the majority people do not vote on qualifications and experience - that was proven in the presidential race and again on a local level there in Natchez

Vote for Chuck! I have not lived there in years but keep up with what is going on (both nationally and in Natchez). Chuck Mayfield has been in law enforcement as long as I can remember; therefore, he has the experience to get the job done. I wish I lived there now so I could vote for Chuck. Please, please, please do not vote for someone just because of the color of their skin.

I am now on Social Security and guess what.......this is the first year there will be no raise in January. This is a slap in the face to the older citizens of this country. I worked for 47 years and paid into the system. It is not welfare!!! Some of you older African American people should ask yourselves why this is happening. It affects you too. Obama spent all of the taxpayer's money bailing out big businesses and then they are still folding because of poor management and bonuses to their top executives. No private industry should ever be saved by the government. That is not Capitalism!!!

To everyone in Adams County: Please go to the polls on Nov. 24th and vote for Chuck Mayfield. Adams County needs the experience to move it forward. Do what is best for the county insteady of trying to "make history". If you studied history, you will remember that many, many historical events were not good ones.

It looks like both of these gentlemen are qualified to do a great job as sheriff. I just hope people will take off their blinders and not just vote based on color.
The divide in Natchez based on color is tiresome at best!
If everyone here would work together we would have a much happier, crime reduced city.
For example, why can't we have black tour guides during pilgrimmage, explaining their important roles in Natchez history? I haven't seen this yet.
The black population of this town has just as much to be proud of as the white. After all, who built most of these great structures in this town?
Some very talented black carpenters and craftsmen did. We should work together and celebrate what both sides have done to create a totally unique city.

I find some of these comments to be disappointing.
Just how much intelligence is required to cast your
vote for the color of a persons skin? None, but you
don't realize it---or some of you don't. God please
bless Adams county in spite of the closed minded
people.

Big_Red16, Mayfield has 25 years of experience with the SHERIFF'S office which includes patrol and administrative experience. He also wants to take preventive measures to stop drug abuse. His children of prisoners mentoring program has been a great way for these kids to have someone to talk to and look up to. In addition to these things he has been very active in community service since the 70's in various organizations. I'm sure Ray is a good guy and does have his heart in the right place, but I believe Mayfield to be more qualified pure and simple. Maybe you should get to know Chuck if you're not afraid to change YOUR mind. =)

My dad was a deputy sheriff when I was a little girl and a cop for many years, so I researched each and every one of these candidates and asked around. Mayfield was the most qualified person followed by Freeman. Brown is a good man and a good candidate, but he doesn't have the hands on experience that Mayfield has. I can only hope that people do their own research and vote for the best person for the job, and not for who they can identify with.

I am so proud of all the contestants. They are ALL great men. It is my prayer that all who ran will still remain a part of the law enforcement TEAM in this county. I am certain that all who wear the badge look at each other as brothers and brothers they truly are. However it disappoints me how a lot of citizens make everything about race. Lets support who we as individuals feel is qualified for the job. We have the right to speak freely in this great country. So lets not demean it or the great men who help us enjoy this right everyday. Its ok if you have southern pride, and its also ok if you have your views based on historic merit of a political contest. Remember all of these men help make it possible for us to live freely and not be afraid to leave our homes. Their jobs are hard let us respect that. As the cliche goes" Cream rises to the top" no matter what color container you pour it from.

I know if I was a Sheriffs Deputy or planning on it, " thinking about joining the volunteer program though" I would much rather have Chuck Mayfield as Sheriff then Ray Brown.

I went to both Website, got to say. Chuck Mayfield has the best qualifications out of the two, by far. No offense Mr Brown, but people need to vote for experience in this day and age.

As for a racial issues, let's face it, some will do this, but I follow JESUS CHRIST. Let's all be a part of GOD'S race of people. When it is all said and done, racism will not be tolerated in heaven, but will be punished in hell.

GOD Bless all

I don't know where Chuck added his years up but I don't think he has 25 years with the sheriff office. We are not voting on who has the most years that does not make him the right man for the job.Ray works in administration now so that is not a factor. Color of his skin should not be a factor. Who can best lead our sheriff office and help keep the Whole community safe and has all of Adams county (rich ,poor, asian, hispanic, black, white, indian) in mind. With RAy there will be fairness for all. No big I's or little U's. To move this community forward we need come out of the past and vote for our children's future.VOTE RAY BROWN!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by TigerLily (anonymous) on November 8, 2009 at 1:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Big_Red16, what exactly do you mean by "come out of the past"? Chuck Mayfield has the experience, and yes number of years IS important, especially when those years are spent unselfishly looking out for all of our families and keeping our streets clean. Mayfield is honest, passionate, a hard worker, and he has always put others before himself. That is a rare characteristic. To move this community forward as you say, we need someone who wants to not only lock up the people who are committing crimes, but prevent them with programs for kids who don't have anyone to teach them right from wrong. I believe this person is Chuck Mayfield.

Agreed TigerLily.. Chuck is the best candidate for the job. Go to each of the candidate's websites and compare their experience. Chuck has volunteered in the community since the 70's and he cares about this county.

spellbound48, Tommy Ferrell is not running for sheriff and unless he is leading a double life as Chuck Mayfield, a vote for Chuck is not a vote for Tommy. Also maybe you should get to know Chuck and what he stands for a little better.

I have personally seen Chuck in action with people of all races and walks of life. Chuck is one of the most fair people I know. And not only does he have the experience, but he has a passion to do this job. That passion comes from a deep love of the job, and a heart for this community and the people in it. The right choice is Charles R. "Chuck" Mayfield for sheriff!!!
