Concordia Parish student allotments increased

Published Friday, November 13, 2009

VIDALIA — The Concordia Parish School Board voted Thursday to increase the amount of money the schools get per student for junior high and high school students.

The increase for junior high students was from $15 to $20 a student, and the allotment for high school students was increased from $20 to $25.

The student allotment is money the school district provides schools to help defray costs incurred at the school level, and is based on the school population as of Oct. 1, Superintendent Loretta Blankenstein said.

The board also adopted the first readings of eight school district policies, but before they did so Blankenstein asked the board to make a change to the policy regarding student suspension.

The legislature has recently required school systems to start allowing students to make up work missed while suspended, and Blankenstein said the school district has the option to allow the make-up work to count from 50 percent credit to full credit.

“It has been this school system’s stand that (suspended students) not receive any credit when they are suspended, but the new rules from the legislature states they shall receive partial or full credit,” she said. “I would ask the board to allow partial credit, because with full credit, it takes part of the punishment away from (suspension).”

In other news:

4The board voted to give certified employees $1,000 and non-certified employees $800 in their 13th check.

The 13th check is a bonus check the school system gives its employees every year, and the amount of the check is based on sales tax revenue.

4The board voted to update the school system’s retiree hospitalization benefits.

The update will basically bring the retiree’s benefits up to the current rate for the hospitalization plan on their given benefits, Blankenstein said.

This is the first increase in retiree hospitalization benefits since 1989.

4The board voted to advertise for an agriculture-grazing lease property 70 acres it owns, located behind the fire station on Airport Road.

The current lease expires Dec. 31.

4The board voted to post all non-leased school board property.

"...The board voted to give certified employees $1,000 and non-certified employees $800 in their 13th check. The 13th check is a bonus check the school system gives its employees every year..."

With only $200 difference in bonuses of certified and non-certified employees, sounds like they're saying certifications really aren’t that big of a deal. I believe fair would be to give the certified employees $1200 and non-certified $600. Not trying to start a war here...just my thoughts on the matter.

Well dissident you can keep your thoughts to yourself. We are all human and we all work just as hard as the certified personnel. If it weren't for the people that are non-certified the certified people couldn't do their jobs on a day to day basis. Think about the bus drivers, the cooks, the bookkeepers, the cleaners, etc. The teachers can't do all these jobs by themselves and still teach a productive lesson. You can't just look down on a person because they don't have a certificate. Not only that but it's a BONUS check so it has nothing to really do with certification. I think that everyone should get an equal amount if you ask me but I do understand why they do give the teachers a little more than everybody else. Sometimes I hate to read the comments on here because it's people like this that want to make a good situation a bad one.
