Natchez woman dead in Lorman shooting

Published Friday, November 13, 2009

NATCHEZ — One Alcorn State University student is dead and another in custody following an off-campus shooting Thursday at a Lorman trailer park.

The body of Danielle Nicole Newsom, 22, of Natchez, was found at approximately 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Stallings Trailer Park on Mississippi 552, Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis said.

Davis said Newsom was shot five times with a .22 pistol. Two of the bullets struck Newsom in the chest and head.

Eboni Bena White, 21, of Port Gibson, has been identified as the shooting suspect. White was arrested at the scene without incident and is being held at the Claiborne County Jail without bond.

Davis said Newsom and White both lived in the trailer park, and the shooting may have been the result of a fight the two students had earlier this week.

Davis said White accused Newsom of nearly running over her son as he got off the school bus.

Claiborne County Coroner James Mallet said Newsom’s body has been transferred to the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson. Preliminary autopsy results are expected today.

ASU is offering grief counseling to faculty, staff and students who may need assistance.

“The death of Ms. Newsom is a matter of great sorrow for the entire Alcorn family,” ASU president George E. Ross said in a press release. “We offer her family and friends our prayers, support and deepest sympathy.

“Although this incident happened off campus, our first priority is to ensure that the Alcorn community is a safe place to live and learn. We want to make sure our faculty, staff and students are taken care of during this difficult time.”

Those who seek grief counseling are urged to contact ASU Student Affairs at 601-877-6380.

CLAIBORNE County, Miss. -- An Alcorn State University student was found dead outside her off-campus home Thursday, campus police said.

The Claiborne County sheriff said the body of Danielle Newsom, 22, of Natchez, was found outside a trailer at the Stallings Trailer Park on Highway 552 in Lorman Thursday morning. She had been shot five times, the sheriff said.

Eboni Bena White, 21, was arrested in connection with the slaying, the sheriff said.

White and Newsom lived in the same trailer park and were both Alcorn students, the sheriff said. The shooting was the result of an argument between the two women, the sheriff said.

White was being held Thursday at the Claiborne County Detention Center.

Let's not that please. A 22 year old is dead and her family is grieving. She was only posting what was on the internet with the names....One reads Anderson while the other reads Newsom. WLBT also states that the last name is Newsom. My prayers go out the families as well as staff and students of Alcorn State. May God cover and comfort you all during your time of bereavement.

Please natchez democrat get the story correct before you print it because I am Newsoms cousin and it was Newsons son who White almost hit getting off the bus. White does not even have children so please correct this story for our family. It is both sad on both families, this was a senseless murder and I am praying for both families at this time because we both took a loss. Thank you.

This is tragic for both families. One lost to death, the other to the criminal justice system. It is also tragic how easy it is to secure a hand gun (different from a gun for hunting).

How do you teach these people that you do not kill each other over arguments. This is going back to cave men mentality.

SHOT 5 TIMES... WHITE HAS SOME SERIOUS ISSUES.
WHITE LOST HER HEAD, AND NOW SHE IS GOING TO LOOSE HER FREEDOM FOR A THE LIFE SHE HAS TAKEN. SHE NEEDS NO BOND OR A BOND HIGH ENOUGH THAT SHE CANNOT AFFORD IT.
BUT if she lives in a TRAILOR..................OH WELL.. SO SO SAD.
I hope she does well in the CMCF WMN.
MAYBE she will be a celly to CARLA HUGHES.

My prayers go out to both families. Especially to the young son involved and the parents who had been so proud their daughters got to go to college. No, I don't know them, but it doesn't matter. Compassion, people, please. I wish I knew the answer to the question of how to help our young people be less volatile and understand that guns do kill, and jail is real. Please join me in supporting these families in prayer and in being there for them. This has to be one of the hardest things any family will ever have to endure.

This is how kids of this generation handle issues . Even the females are gun ho . A .22 is one heck of a deadly gun , don't let the small caliber size fool you . I guarantee even without a head shot the kid would have died . These .22 bullets bounce and do terrible damage to internal organs . Anyway I hope the ND did get it wrong because this reads like flat out murder/insanity on the shooter's part .

She won't "almost run over" nobody else.

Yep Gene, she showed them.

Alex I'll take Mississippi for 200. What's that? Wrong? Yeah? I'll just shoot you and you won't tell me wrong again. That's the way we do it down there.

Sioux lady,
you are right but, we must learn morals and we are living in short times.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on November 13, 2009 at 11:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

kids raising kids, before they have the maturity to deal with all the issues of raising a child and earning a decent living.....the stress must be almost unbearable - children to feed, no job, living in a cramped trailer, trying to go to school......

sad that so many people rush into things without thinking it through, .....and think so little of the sanctity of another human's life........

if she's truly guilty, I hope she gets the maximum penalty, and it sounds as if this was pre-meditated,- thus the death penalty is certainly called for, as this was an on-going argument, she got the gun and pumped 5 shots into the victim, after several days from the incident with the child.....horrendous

My heart goes out to both families involved, I'm a single mother of 23 year old Triplets and the grandmother of five beautiful girls. I raised my children in church and sunday school, and they received their diplomas in 2005...my heart is hurting for each family. We as people need to focus on what is right, think first before actions are taken. Believe with all your heart, that no weapon formed against you shall prosper. We need to let go and let God handle certain situations that falls in our lives.

SHOT 5 TIMES... BUT if she lives in a TRAILOR.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Both were ASU students attempting to better themselves by furthering their education. THIS is why they were living in trailers UNLIKE you redneck hicks who pass down trailers in your family like they are some type of family heirloom. I'm sure most of you hicks are more surprised to discover they lived in trailers. My condolences to both families!

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO TEACHING MORALS AND HAVING RESPECT FOR OTHERS.
MORALS HAVE JUST GONE OUT THE WINDOW.

2 LIVES ENDED ON THAT DAY.

1 will never breath again, and the other will never know freedom.

Until all the facts come out quit passing judgement. Eboni work for me while I was at ASU. She was a level head and responsible kid, who was a pleasure to have worked with. That being said I also know not all kids are what they seem and good kids do get in trouble. I'm sure something was said or done by both sides that exculated to this tragedy. I feel for both families because this is a sad situation for all, but we don't know exactaly what happen in either case. We may never know the whole truths. So unless you were right there in both incounters, keep your hate to yourself. Both families need our prayer to get through the tough times ahead. May God Bless both families.

As always the blog is full of ignorant posts. From being insensitive to the victim, her family, and her motherless child to being overly sensitive to the alleged perp. Regardless of the situation a life was taken and there are NO EXCUSES for taking someone's life. From what I gather both women had wronged each other the last few months. Ms. White had even been warned on campus by officials about her attitude, there were many complaints from others about how she had been acting. So, with that being said please pray for both families because with this Ms. White will more than likely be suggested for the death penalty (premeditated) and Ms. Newsome has already lost her life. We as a community will never know what these young ladies would of become. So, WE all hurt when our neighbors hurt, right?, or do we just take that attitude when we are in church on Sunday?
