Sheriff's forum set for Monday
Published Friday, November 13, 2009
NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a sheriff’s forum at 6 p.m. Monday at the Natchez Convention Center.
President CEO Debbie Hudson said the hour-long forum would serve to give county residents one last chance to hear what their candidates have to say.
“The chamber would like this to be educational and provide the community with the ability to make good choices,” Hudson said.
Hudson said candidates Ray Brown and Chuck Mayfield will have the chance to give a brief introduction before answering questions presented by chamber members and members of the audience.
Candidates will be given approximately two minutes to answer each question.
Hudson said questions from the audience will be submitted in writing.
This will be the county’s third sheriff’s forum for this year’s special election, but the chamber’s forum is the only one to be scheduled after the runoff.
“We felt we would wait (until the runoff) and give the candidates another opportunity to talk about issues at a greater length,”
Hudson said.
“If (citizens) have concerns, we want them to voice them in their questions. It’s all about communicaation.”
Hudson said the chamber is setting up between 100 and 150 seats within the convention center and they hope to see a good turnout.
“This is the only opportunity
(some citizens) will get to even see this person who will be playing an important part of the community,” Hudson said. “We want people to have an interest in who is going to be our sheriff and protecting our community.”
The runoff is Nov. 24.
Absentee voting is ongoing at the circuit clerk’s office.

I have great respect for both men...either would do an excellent job. But what sets Chuck apart is that he has a variety of experience in every level of law enforcement, something I don't think Ray has. They certainly would make a dynamic team. As Mojo said in one of his earlier posts, too bad we can't have both!

I have heard wonderful things about both men but in the experience department, Chuck far outweighs Mr. Brown. With the economic condition of our country and county there needs to be someone who is able and experienced in budget mangement and utilization. Chuck has had the hands on, day to day, operational experience of the narcotics unit and this makes me feel much more secure in his ability.

Ray is right now hands on with opeational, management, leadership, grants, and dealing with budgets in his present job. All vital tools for our next sheriff. Chuck's budgets was controled by Tommy Ferrell. Vote Ray Brown.

Big_Red16 Chucks budgets were not controlled by Tommy Ferrell. He was the head of the metro narcotics where he did his own budget. Also Chuck's job at the Youth court included writing and applying for grants. Get your facts straight. Chuck is more experienced Mr. Brown said it himself.
