Biddit! bidding begins today
Published Sunday, November 15, 2009
NATCHEZ — The Biddit! frog is in front of his computer and ready to take your bids — beginning at 9 a.m. today.
Biddit! is an online holiday gift certificate auction offering goods and services discounted as much as 50 percent.
Bidding begins at 9 a.m. today and ends at 8 p.m. next Sunday, Nov. 22.
Nearly 100 gift certificates for goods and services from local merchants will be available. With a combined value of well over $50,000, the list of items offers something for just about everyone.
Some of the larger ticket items include a Bad Boy Buggy Classic LSV, a 52-inch LCD TV, a Mio 50 motor scooter and a complete office furniture set.
But the auction items include more reasonably priced items, too, including gift certificates for hair cutting services, flower arrangements and even pizza.
Interested bidders can view items, register and begin bidding by visiting natchezdemocrat.com and clicking on the link at the top of the page.
Bids for gift certificates begin as low as $1 and reserve prices begin at 50 percent of the retail value.
The reserve price is simply the bid price at which the item will be sold. Items with bids that come in below the reserve price may not sell.
Local auctioneer Barry Maxwell will review all winning bids at the close of the auction.
Details of the auction rules and answers to frequently asked questions are available on the auction site under the “help” menu.
Go to the following link to the auction site for more: www.natchezdemocrat/auction.

I went to http://www.cityxpress.com/bonne/natchez/... to see what the item was, since the graphic just said it was a $250 storewide gift certificate, but didn't say what store. As it turns out, the store is listed as Mims in the description. But it says on that page that the value is $750 and that the minimum bid is $375 -- for a $250 gift certificate???

I have tried several times to sign up and it won't take my user name and password....When I put in my email to send my password, it says it is invalid...I use that email every day. Maybe only certain people are allowed to sign up.

The minimum bids are too high for this area. They sure think alot of themselves.

This isn’t news...this is an advertisement. Exactly what are the Democrats ties to this Biddit site anyway?

The opening bids are too high! Why not do this like ebay and start really low and as people bid let them know if they've hit the minimum to buy the item. It would certainly get more people involved. This is going to end being a bust for the ND and those people that made their items available.
It's not a bad idea but needs tweeking.

eawprops said it. I didn't have to.

My apologies for my delayed replies here. I was having an early Thanksgiving with my nephew and family who is on temporary leave from duty in Iraq so I was away from a computer most of Sunday.
Luzichick: The Mims listing was a typo created when we input the gift certificate into the database. It's been fixed now. Mims is offering three separate $250 gift certificates for merchandise in their store. The opening bid for each is $125 each (50 percent of the face value). For the first three bidders, they can get $250 of merchandise credit for $125.
mslugirl: Please shoot me an e-mail with your e-mail address and I'll see if we can figure out the problem so that you can register and bid if you'd like.
For the others who are complaining about the values, the bids start at 50 percent of the retail value. That seems like a good deal to me. If you think it's too high, simply don't bid. There's no need to bad mouth the auction, the newspaper and the businesses who are participating. :)
Thanks.
Kevin.

"There's no need to bad mouth the auction, the newspaper and the businesses who are participating."
Translation: The Comments section of our paper is so the reader can voice his or her opinion as long as it is the same as ours, won't offend any of the people we do business with, or won't say how crappy our latest money making gimmick is.
Remember...we own the disable AND the delete buttons.

youneverknow and Dissident:
Correct. It is their comment and they are welcome to it. I was simply sharing my own comment.
That doesn't make me right and others wrong. We merely have differing opinions and outlooks. :)
To Dissident (directly):
We've never removed a comment simply because we don't agree with someone's opinion. If I did that, we'd take off every comment that takes a shot at the newspaper.
We do, however, take off comments that are flagged by readers for being violations of our terms of use agreement. Most of those fall in one of three categories:
1). Use of foul language.
2). Unfounded accusations.
3). Hate-filled language/threats.
Despite what you imply, Dissident, we do not flaunt the fact that we can disable comments when things get out of hand.
Different opinions (even the ones that seem almost constantly negative) are fine; it's only when a user steps over the line and the comment is brought to our attention do we have to make a judgment on whether or not to remove a comment.
Thanks.
Kevin.

I think this is a good idea, except the prices are way to high for this market. I have run several silent auctions for a non-profit and gathered the items for the autions and see that the items offered are nice but out of the league of most people here in Natchez.
This is the time shoppers are looking for gifts for Christmas for family and loved ones, with the local economy not in great shape and local merchants even complaining last year of the lack of local shoppers this idea is missing the boat.
Lower price items should be listed first, as I got turned off by the higher priced items up front. Items also could be listed by type ie. food, entertainment, services, outdoor, decorations, vehicle etc. so I wouldn't have to go through the entire list. Good luck....

"We’ll collect the winning bids. Any items that sell earn the business marketing credits (valued at the retail value of the item) that can be used to run advertisements and thus help them generate more cash flow for their business and help them move more merchandise."
So, We are trading items for advertising credits?
If one has an item for $5,000 retail, that sells for a bid of 50% of that, do they get $5,000 worth of ads in the Demo?

Why is every single thing that happens in Natchez such a struggle..The simplest of tasks seem to take forever or it all stays fouled up and goes bust, plus no one seems to be able to figure any of it out.
